Abstract:G. Navarro and P. H. Tiep, among others, have studied groups with few rational conjugacy classes or few rational irreducible characters. In this paper we look at the opposite extreme. Let $G$ be a finite group. Given a conjugacy class $K$ of $G$, we say it is irrational if there is some $\chi \in \operatorname{Irr}(G)$ such that $\chi(K) \not \in \mathbb{Q}$. One of our main results shows that, when $G$ contains at most $5$ irrational conjugacy classes, then $|\operatorname{Irr}_{\mathbb{Q}} (G)| = | \operatorname{cl}_{\mathbb{Q}} (G)|$. This suggests some duality with the known results and open questions on groups with few rational irreducible characters.

Abstract:For any finite group $G$, Thompson proved that, for each $\chi\in {\rm Irr}(G)$, $\chi(g)$ is a root of unity or zero for more than a third of the elements $g\in G$, and Gallagher proved that, for each larger than average class $g^G$, $\chi(g)$ is a root of unity or zero for more than a third of the irreducible characters $\chi\in {\rm Irr}(G)$. We show that in many cases "more than a third" can be replaced by "more than half".

Abstract:If all of the entries of a large $S_n$ character table are covered up and you are allowed to uncover one entry at a time, then how can you quickly identify all of the indexing characters and conjugacy classes? We present a fast algorithmic solution that works even when n is so large that almost none of the entries of the character table can be computed. The fraction of the character table that needs to be uncovered has exponential decay, and for many of these entries we are only interested in whether the entry is zero.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group and $N<G$ a normal subgroup with $G/N$ abelian. We show how the conjugacy classes of $G$ in a given coset $qN$ relate to the irreducible characters of $G$ that are not identically $0$ on $qN$. We describe several consequences. In particular, we deduce that when $G/N$ is cyclic generated by $q$, the number of irreducible characters of $N$ that extend to $G$ is the number of conjugacy classes of $G$ in $qN$.

Abstract:A classical theorem on character degrees states that if a finite group has fewer than four character degrees, then the group is solvable. We prove a corresponding result on character values by showing that if a finite group has fewer than eight character values in its character table, then the group is solvable. This confirms a conjecture of T. Sakurai. We also classify non-solvable groups with exactly eight character values.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group, and let $\text{Irr}(G)$ denote the set of the irreducible complex characters of $G$. An element $g\in G$ is called a vanishing element of $G$ if there exists $\chi\in\text{Irr}(G)$ such that $\chi(g)=0$ (i.e., $g$ is a zero of $\chi$) and, in this case, the conjugacy class $g^G$ of $g$ in $G$ is called a vanishing conjugacy class. In this paper we consider several problems concerning vanishing elements and vanishing conjugacy classes; in particular, we consider the problem of determining the least number of conjugacy classes of a finite group $G$ such that every non-linear $\chi\in\text{Irr}(G)$ vanishes on one of them. We also consider the related problem of determining the minimum number of non-linear irreducible characters of a group such that two of them have a common zero.

Abstract:We study the conjugacy class growth function in finitely generated virtually abelian groups. That is, the number of elements in the ball of radius $n$ in the Cayley graph which intersect a fixed conjugacy class. In the class of virtually abelian groups, we prove that this function is always asymptotically equivalent to a polynomial. Furthermore, we show that in any affine Coxeter group, the degree of polynomial growth of a conjugacy class is equivalent to the reflection length of any element of that class.

Abstract:A known result for the finite general linear group $\GL(n,\FF_q)$ and for the finite unitary group $\U(n,\FF_{q^2})$ posits that the sum of the irreducible character degrees is equal to the number of symmetric matrices in the group. Fulman and Guralnick extended this result by considering sums of irreducible characters evaluated at an arbitrary conjugacy class of $\GL(n,\FF_q)$. We develop an explicit formula for the value of the permutation character of $\U(2n,\FF_{q^2})$ over $\Sp(2n,\FF_q)$ evaluated an an arbitrary conjugacy class and use results concerning Gelfand-Graev characters to obtain an analogous formula for $\U(n,\FF_{q^2})$ in the case where $q$ is an odd prime. These results are also given as probabilistic statements.

Abstract:We develop the concept of character level for the complex irreducible characters of finite, general or special, linear and unitary groups. We give characterizations of the level of a character in terms of its Lusztig's label and in terms of its degree. Then we prove explicit upper bounds for character values at elements with not-too-large centralizers and derive upper bounds on the covering number and mixing time of random walks corresponding to these conjugacy classes. We also characterize the level of the character in terms of certain dual pairs and prove explicit exponential character bounds for the character values, provided that the level is not too large.

Abstract:This paper identifies all pairs of ordinary irreducible characters of the alternating group which agree on conjugacy classes of elements of order not divisible by a fixed integer $l$, for $l \neq 3$. We do the same for the double covers of the symmetric and alternating groups. The only such characters are the conjugate or associate pairs labelled by partitions with a certain parameter divisible by $l$. When $l$ is prime, this implies that the rows of the $l$-modular decomposition matrix are distinct except for the rows labelled by these pairs. When $l=3$ we exhibit many additional examples of such pairs of characters.

Abstract:When n is odd, consider the finite general linear and unitary groups of rank n, extended by the inverse transpose automorphism. There are elements in the extended groups which square to a regular unipotent element, and we evaluate the values of irreducible characters of the extended groups on these elements. Several intermediate results on real conjugacy classes and real-valued characters of these groups are obtained along the way.

Abstract:Let $G = K \rtimes \langle t \rangle $ be a finitely generated group where $K$ is abelian and $\langle t\rangle$ is the infinite cyclic group. Let $ R $ be a finite symmetric subset of $K$ such that $S = \{ (r,1),(0,t^{\pm 1}) \mid r \in R \}$ is a generating set of $G$. We prove that the spherical conjugacy ratio, and hence the conjugacy ratio, of $G$ with respect to $S$ is $0$ unless $G$ is virtually abelian, confirming a conjecture of Ciobanu, Cox and Martino in this case. We also show that the Baumslag--Solitar group $\mathrm{BS}(1,2)$ has a one-sided Følner sequence $F$ such that the conjugacy ratio with respect to $F$ is non-zero, even though $\mathrm{BS}(1,2)$ is not virtually abelian. This is in contrast to two-sided Følner sequences, where Tointon showed that the conjugacy ratio with respect to a two-sided Følner sequence is positive if and only if the group is virtually abelian.

Abstract:In 1961, Solomon gave upper and lower bounds for the sum of all the entries in the character table of a finite group in terms of elementary properties of the group. In a different direction, we consider the ratio of the character table sum to the sum of the entries in the first column, also known as the character degree sum, in this work. First, we propose that this ratio is at most two for many natural groups. Secondly, we extend a conjecture of Fields to postulate that this ratio is at least one with equality if and only if the group is abelian. We establish the validity of this property and conjecture for all finite irreducible Coxeter groups. In addition, we prove the conjecture for generalized symmetric groups. The main tool we use is that the sum of a column in the character table of an irreducible Coxeter group (resp. generalized symmetric group) is given by the number of square roots (resp. absolute square roots) of the corresponding conjugacy class representative. As a byproduct of our results, we show that the asymptotics of character table sums is the same as the number of involutions in symmetric, hyperoctahedral and demihyperoctahedral groups. We also derive explicit generating functions for the character table sums for these latter groups as infinite products of continued fractions. In the same spirit, we prove similar generating function formulas for the number of square roots and absolute square roots in $n$ for the generalized symmetric groups $G(r,1,n)$.

Abstract:A natural question for groups $H$ is which data can be detected in its finite quotients. A subset $X \subset H$ is called separable if for all $h\in H \setminus X$, there exists an epimorphism $\varphi$ to a finite group $Q$ such that $\varphi(h)\notin\varphi(X)$. More specifically, a group is said to be conjugacy separable if every conjugacy class is separable. It is known that many classes of groups are conjugacy separable, including virtually free and polycyclic groups. The minimal order of the quotient $Q$, in terms of the complexity of the conjugacy classes under consideration, is captured by the conjugacy separability function $\mathrm{Conj}_H: \mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N}$. This function is in general ill understood, in fact the only large class of groups for which it is known exactly are the abelian groups. Indeed, in this case $\mathrm{Conj}_H$ is equal to the residual finiteness function, that is the size of quotients needed to separate singletons, and thus logarithmic if the group is infinite. Recent work has described the residual finiteness function for the class of virtually abelian groups, which gives a lower bound for the conjugacy separability function. The main result of this paper is a characterization of $\mathrm{Conj}_H$ for every virtually abelian group $H$. If the corresponding extension is associated with an irreducible representation over $\mathbb{Q}$, we demonstrate that we obtain the same function as the residual finiteness function. However, if the representation is not irreducible, we find an expression that is in some cases strictly larger, which we illustrate with several examples.

Abstract:Suppose that $G$ is a finite group and $K$ a non-trivial conjugacy class of $G$ such that $KK^{-1}=1\cup D\cup D^{-1}$ with $D$ a conjugacy class of $G$. We prove that $G$ is not a non-abelian simple group. We also give arithmetical conditions on the class sizes determining the structure of $\langle K\rangle$ and $\langle D\rangle$. Furthermore, if $D=K$ is a non-real class, then $\langle K\rangle$ is $p$-elementary abelian for some odd prime $p$.

Abstract:A finite group $G$ is $normally ~monomial$ if all its irreducible characters are induced from linear characters of normal subgroups of $G$. In this paper, we determine all possible irreducible character degree sets of normally monomial 5-groups of maximal class. Moreover, we give an upper bound for the largest irreducible character degree of normally monomial $p$-groups of maximal class in terms of $p$.
