Abstract:In this paper we provide a complete characterisation of coisotropic embeddings of precosymplectic manifolds into cosymplectic manifolds. This result extends a theorem of Gotay about coisotropic embeddings of presymplectic manifolds. We also extend to the cosymplectic case some results of A. Weinstein which generalise the Darboux theorem. While symplectic geometry is the natural framework for developing Hamiltonian mechanics, cosymplectic geometry is the corresponding framework for time-dependent Hamiltonian mechanics. The motivation behind proving this theorem is to generalise known results for symplectic geometry to cosymplectic geometry, so that they can be used to study time-dependent systems, for instance for the regularization problem of singular Lagrangian systems.

Coisotropic reduction in Multisymplectic Geometry

Abstract:In this paper we study coisotropic reduction in multisymplectic geometry. On the one hand, we give an interpretation of Hamiltonian multivector fields as Lagrangian submanifolds and prove that $k$-coisotropic submanifolds induce a Lie subalgebra in the algebra of Hamiltonian $(k-1)$-forms, similar to how coisotropic submanifolds in symplectic geometry induce a Lie subalgebra under the Poisson bracket. On the other hand, we extend the classical result of symplectic geometry of projection of Lagrangian submanifolds in coisotropic reduction to bundles of forms, which naturally carry a multisymplectic structure.

Shifted coisotropic structures for differentiable stacks

Abstract:We introduce a notion of coisotropics on 1-shifted symplectic Lie groupoids (i.e. quasi-symplectic groupoids) using twisted Dirac structures and show that it satisfies properties analogous to the corresponding derived-algebraic notion in shifted Poisson geometry. In particular, intersections of 1-coisotropics are 0-shifted Poisson. We also show that 1-shifted coisotropic structures transfer through Morita equivalences, giving a well-defined notion for differentiable stacks. Most results are formulated with clean-intersection conditions weaker than transversality while avoiding derived geometry. Examples of 1-coisotropics that are not necessarily Lagrangians include Hamiltonian actions of quasi-symplectic groupoids on Dirac manifolds, and this recovers several generalizations of Marsden-Weinstein-Meyer's symplectic reduction via intersection and Morita transfer.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a symplectic proof of the Horn inequalities on eigenvalues of a sum of two Hermitian matrices with given spectra. Our method is a combination of tropical calculus for matrix eigenvalues, combinatorics of planar networks, and estimates for the Liouville volume. As a corollary, we give a tropical description of the Duistermaat-Heckman measure on the Horn polytope.

Abstract:This text is an expanded version of the lectures delivered by the authors at the CIME summer school “Symplectic 4-manifolds and algebraic surfaces,” Cetraro (Italy), September 2–10, 2003. The aim of these lectures were mostly to introduce graduate students to pseudo-holomorphic techniques for the study of isotopy of symplectic submanifolds in dimension four. We tried to keep the style of the lectures by emphasizing the basic reasons for the correctness of a result rather than by providing full details. Essentially none of the content claims any originality, but most of the results are scattered in the literature in sometimes hard-to-read locations. For example, we give a hands-on proof of the smooth parametrization of the space of holomorphic cycles on a complex surface under some positivity assumption. This is usually derived by the big machinery of deformation theory together with Banach-analytic methods. For an uninitiated person it is hard not only to follow the formal arguments needed to deduce the result from places in the literature, but also, and maybe more importantly, to understand whyit is true. While our treatment here has the disadvantage to consider only a particular situation that does not even quite suffice for the proof of the Main Theorem (Theorem 9.1) we hope that it is useful for enhancing the understanding of this result outside the community of hardcore complex analysts and algebraic geometers. The last section discusses the proof of the main theorem, which is also the main result from [SiTi3]. The logic of this proof is a bit difficult, involving several reduction steps and two inductions, and we are not sure if the current presentation really helps in understanding what is going on. Maybe somebody else has to take this up again and add new ideas into streamlining this piece. Finally there is one section on the application to symplectic Lefschetz fibrations. This makes the link to the other lectures of the summer school, notably to those by Auroux and Smith.

Abstract:In this article, we continue our study of 'Frobenius structures' and symplectic spectral invariants in the context of symplectic spinors. By studying the case of $C^1$-small Hamiltonian mappings on symplectic manifolds $M$ admitting a metaplectic structure and a parallel $\hat O(n)$-reduction of its metaplectic frame bundle we derive how the construction of 'singularly rigid' resp. 'self-dual' pairs of irreducible Frobenius structures associated to this Hamiltonian mapping $\Phi$ leads to a Hopf-algebra-type structure on the set of irreducible Frobenius structures. We then generalize this construction and define abstractly conditions under which 'dual pairs' associated to a given $C^1$-small Hamiltonian mapping emerge, these dual pairs are essentially pairs $(s_1, J_1), (s_2, J_2)$ of closed sections of the cotangent bundle $T^*M$ and (in general singular) compatible almost complex structures on $M$ satisfying certain integrability conditions involving a Koszul bracket. In the second part of this paper, we translate these characterizing conditions for general 'dual pairs' of Frobenius structures associated to a $C^1$-small Hamiltonian system into the notion of matrix factorization. We propose an algebraic setting involving modules over certain fractional ideals of function rings on $M$ so that the set of 'dual pairs' in the above sense and the set of matrix factorizations associated to these modules stand in bijective relation. We prove, in the real-analytic case, a Riemann Roch-type theorem relating a certain Euler characteristic arising from a given matrix factorization in the above sense to (integral) cohomological data on $M$ using Cheeger-Simons-type differential characters, derived from a given pair $(s_1, J_1), (s_2, J_2)$. We propose extensions of these techniques to the case of 'geodesic convexity-smallness' of $\Phi$ and to the case of general Hamiltonian systems on $M$.

Gauss--Bonnet for CSM classes of very affine manifolds, and tropical isotopies

Abstract:The CSM class of a very affine manifold $U$ is represented by the rank drop locus of a general tuple of torus invariant 1-forms on it. This equality holds in the homology of any toric compactification $X\supset U$. It was proved for schön $U$ by Huh, and later for all $U$ in the homology of $X=CP^n$ by Maxim--Rodriguez--Wang--Wu, using Ginsburg's interpretation of CSM classes as Lagrangian cycles. We deduce this identity in full generality from properties of affine characteristic classes, give an explicit sufficient condition of general position for the 1-forms, and use it to extend the identity to non-torus invariant 1-forms. Along the way, we characterize very affine varieties of ML degree 0, and give a useful criterion for a family of varieties to have a constant tropical fan (``tropical isotopy theorem''). Our main idea is a technique to study very affine varieties without compactifying them. As a result we do not have to deal with singularities occuring at the boundary of the compactification, which would require less constructive methods (such as resolution of singularities). This is what enables us to give constructive genericity conditions in this Gauss--Bonnet theorem.

Abstract:We revisit the symplectic aspects of the spectral transform for matrix-valued rational functions with simple poles. We construct eigenvectors of such matrices in terms of the Szegő kernel on the spectral curve. Using variational formulas for the Szegő kernel we construct a new system of action-angle variables for the canonical symplectic form on the space of such functions. Comparison with previously known action-angle variables shows that the vector of Riemann constants is the gradient of some function on the moduli space of spectral curves; this function is found in the case of matrix dimension 2, when the spectral curve is hyperelliptic.

Abstract:The analogies between symplectic and orthogonal groups, regarded as symmetries of real bilinear forms, are manifest in their (metaplectic and spin) projective representations. In finite dimensions, those are true representations of doubly covering groups; but one may also use group extensions by a circle. Here we lay out a parallel treatment of of the Mp$^\mathrm{c}$ and Spin$^\mathrm{c}$ covering groups, acting on the respective Fock spaces by permuting certain Gaussian vectors. The cocycles of these extensions exhibit interesting similarities.

Abstract:In this short note, we provide an alternative proof of a notable theorem by Narasimhan and Ramanan. The theorem states that the moduli space of $S$-equivalence classes of semistable rank $2$ vector bundles over a curve $X$ of genus $2$ with trivial determinant is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^3$. Our proof relies on a criterion by Bauer and Szemberg, which characterizes projective spaces among smooth Fano varieties using Seshadri constants.

Abstract:We establish a pseudoisotopy result for embedding spaces in the line of that of Weiss and Williams for diffeomorphism groups. In other words, for $P\subset M$ a codimension at least three embedding, we describe the difference in a range of homotopical degrees between the spaces of block and ordinary embeddings of $P$ into $M$ as a certain infinite loop space involving the relative algebraic $K$-theory of the pair $(M,M-P)$. This range of degrees is the so-called concordance embedding stable range, which, by recent developments of Goodwillie-Krannich-Kupers, is far beyond that of the aforementioned theorem of Weiss-Williams.

Abstract:We use cotangent bundles of spaces of smooth embeddings to construct symplectic dual pairs involving the group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms. Via symplectic reduction we obtain descriptions of coadjoint orbits of this group in terms of nonlinear Grassmannians of augmented submanifolds. For codimension one embeddings these submanifolds are further constrained to the leaves of isodrastic foliations with finite codimensions.

Abstract:Morita equivalence classes of Lie groupoids serve as models for differentiable stacks, which are higher spaces in differential geometry, generalizing manifolds and orbifolds. Representations up to homotopy of Lie groupoids provide a higher analog of classical representations and play a significant role in Poisson geometry. In this paper, we prove that the cohomology with coefficients in a representation up to homotopy is a Morita invariant, and therefore an invariant of the underlying stack. This result was inspired by the 2-term case, previously developed by del Hoyo and Ortiz, and it relies on the simplicial approach to representations up to homotopy, recently introduced by del Hoyo and Trentinaglia. As a subsidiary result, we include a proof of the cohomological descent for higher Lie groupoids.
