Abstract:We compute the integral cohomology ring of configuration spaces of two points on a given real projective space. Apart from an integral class, the resulting ring is a quotient of the known integral cohomology of the dihedral group of order 8 (in the case of unordered configurations, thus has only 2- and 4-torsion) or of the elementary abelian 2-group of rank 2 (in the case of ordered configurations, thus has only 2-torsion). As an application, we complete the computation of the symmetric topological complexity of real projective spaces of dimensions of the form 2^i+j for non-negative i and j with j<3.

Abstract:Abstract In 1980, Oniščik [A. L. Oniščik, Totally geodesic submanifolds of symmetric spaces, Geometric methods in problems of algebra and analysis. Vol. 2, Yaroslav. Gos. Univ., Yaroslavl’ 1980, 64–85, 161] introduced the index of a Riemannian symmetric space as the minimal codimension of a (proper) totally geodesic submanifold. He calculated the index for symmetric spaces of rank ≤ 2 {\leq 2} , but for higher rank it was unclear how to tackle the problem. In [J. Berndt, S. Console and C. E. Abstract:Let $(X,B)$ be a log Calabi--Yau pair of dimension $n$, index one, and birational complexity $c$. We show that $(X,B)$ has a crepant birational model that admits a tower of Mori fiber spaces of which at least $n-c$ are conic fibrations. Motivated by the proof of the previous statement, we introduce new measures of the complexity of a log Calabi--Yau pair; the alteration complexity and the conic complexity. We characterize when these invariants are zero. Finally, we give applications of the tools of the main theorem to birational superrigidity, Fano hypersurfaces, dual complexes, Weil indices of Fano varieties, and klt singularities.

Abstract:We study the cobordism of manifolds with boundary, and its applications to codimension 2 embeddings $M^m\subset N^{m+2}$, using the method of the algebraic theory of surgery. The first main result is a splitting theorem for cobordisms of algebraic Poincaré pairs, which is then applied to describe the behaviour on the chain level of Seifert surfaces of embeddings $M^{2n-1} \subset S^{2n+1}$ under isotopy and cobordism. The second main result (update: which is false) is that the $S$-equivalence class of a Seifert form is an isotopy invariant of the embedding, generalizing the Murasugi--Levine result for knots and links. The third main result is a generalized Murasugi--Kawauchi inequality giving an upper bound on the difference of the Levine--Tristram signatures of cobordant embeddings.

Intersections of Real Symmetric Hypersurfaces

Abstract:We prove a symmetric version of Bézout's theorem. More precisely, we show that the symmetric orbit type of a transverse intersection of complex symmetric hypersurfaces in projective space is determined by the degrees. In the projective plane, we fully classify the possible orbit types of such intersection loci using completely elementary methods. From this classification, we obtain strong restrictions on the number of real points in the intersection of real symmetric curves. We also provide a partial classification in $\mathbb{P}^3_{\mathbb{C}}$, with a similar restriction on real points.

Partially symmetric tensors and the non-defectivity of secant varieties of products with a projective line as a factor

Abstract:We prove (with a mild restriction on the multidegrees) that all secant varieties of Segre-Veronese varieties with $k>2$ factors, $k-2$ of them being $\mathbb{P}^1$, have the expected dimension. This is equivalent to compute the dimension of the set of all partially symmetric tensors with a fixed rank and the same format. The proof uses the case $k=2$ proved by Galuppi and Oneto. Our theorem is an easy consequence of a theorem proved here for arbitrary projective varieties with a projective line as a factor and with respect to complete linear systems.

A remark on a theorem of Narasimhan and Ramanan

Abstract:In this short note, we provide an alternative proof of a notable theorem by Narasimhan and Ramanan. The theorem states that the moduli space of $S$-equivalence classes of semistable rank $2$ vector bundles over a curve $X$ of genus $2$ with trivial determinant is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^3$. Our proof relies on a criterion by Bauer and Szemberg, which characterizes projective spaces among smooth Fano varieties using Seshadri constants.

Abstract:Classically, Bézout's theorem says that an intersection of hypersurfaces in a projective space is rationally equivalent to a number of copies of a smaller projective space, the number depending on the degrees of the hypersurfaces. We give a generalization of that result to the context of $C_2$-equivariant hypersurfaces in $C_2$-equivariant linear projective space, expressing the intersection as a linear combination of equivariant Schubert varieties.

Abstract:We prove that any proper holomorphic mapping between two equidimensional irreducible bounded symmetric domains with rank ≥ 2 \geq 2 is a biholomorphism. The proof of the main result in this paper will be achieved by a differential-geometric study of a special class of complex geodesic curves on the bounded symmetric domains with respect to their Bergman metrics.

Abstract:We prove that projective hyperkähler manifolds of K3$^{[n]}$-type admitting a non-trivial symplectic birational self-map of finite order are isomorphic to moduli spaces of stable (twisted) coherent sheaves on K3 surfaces. Motivated by this result, we analyze the reflections on the movable cone of moduli spaces of sheaves and determine when they come from a birational involution.

Abstract:Collisionless energy absorption in 1D nanoplasma layer is considered. Straightforward classical calculation of the absorption rate in action-angle variables is presented. In regular regime the result obtained is the same as in [Zaretsky <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://et.al" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>., 2004], but deeper insight is possible now due to the technique used. Chirikov criterion of the chaotic absorption regime is written out. Collisionless energy absorption rate in nanoplasma layer is calculated in stochastic regime.

Birational maps of Severi-Brauer surfaces, with applications to Cremona groups of higher rank

Abstract:We prove that any group of cardinality at most the one of $\mathbb{C}$ is a quotient of any Cremona group of rank at least $4$. This provides a definitive answer to the question of what the quotients of Cremona groups can be. As a consequence, this gives a negative answer to the question of I. Dolgachev of whether Cremona groups of all ranks are generated by involutions. As another application, we show that higher Cremona groups do not enjoy some classical group-theoretic properties (namely, the Hopfian property) which are satisfied by Cremona groups of rank $2$. Finally, we discover that the $3$-torsion of the Cremona group of rank at least $4$ is not countable. To deduce these properties of higher Cremona groups, we first describe the group of birational transformations of a non-trivial Severi-Brauer surface $S$ over a perfect field, proving in particular that if $S$ contains a point of degree $6$, then its group of birational self-maps is not generated by elements of finite order as it admits a surjective group homomorphism to~$\mathbb{Z}$. We then use this result to study Mori fibre spaces over the field of complex numbers, for which the generic fibre is a non-trivial Severi-Brauer surface.

Abstract:Abstract We construct a sequence of explicit blow-ups and blow-downs on an irreducible compact Hermitian symmetric spaces $X$ which transforms it into a projective space of the same dimension. Moreover, this resolves a birational map given by Landsberg and Manivel. Centers of the blow-ups for $X$ are constructed by loci of chains of minimal rational curves and centers of the blow-ups for the projective space are constructed from the variety of minimal rational tangents of $X$ and its higher secant varieties. The result was known in the special case where $X$ is of rank 2 and could be found in Zak’s monograph “Tangents and secants of algebraic varieties.”

Cobordisms of singular maps

Abstract:The notion of cobordism of singular maps was introduced around 1980 by A. Szűcs and U. Koschorke independently. As an application, Szűcs used it to compute cobordism groups of immersions and embeddings in dimensions where the classical theory did not succeed. His method of studying cobordism groups of singular maps involves the investigation of classifying spaces that were constructed by him, first in a few special cases, then, with the help of the work of Rimányi, in complete generality. Since then quite a few results and (partial) computations were performed in this theory. The present thesis collects and organises these results of Szűcs, Terpai and other coauthors towards and on the computation of cobordism groups of singular maps.

Abstract:Given a complex projective algebraic variety $X$ we define $ h(X)$ as the largest $n$ such that the $n$-th symmetric power of $X$ is (Brody) hyperbolic. Using Nevanlinna theory for algebroid maps, we give non-trivial lower bounds for $ h(X)$. From an arithmetic point of view, the problem is closely related to the finiteness of algebraic points of bounded degree in varieties over number fields. We provide explicit applications of our results in the case of curves embedded in surfaces and in the case of subvarieties of abelian varieties.

Abstract:In this work we analysed the validity of a type of Borsuk-Ulam theorem for multimaps between surfaces. We developed an algebraic technique involving braid groups to study this problem for n -valued maps. As a first application we described when the Borsuk-Ulam theorem holds for split and non-split multimaps in the following two cases: ( i ) X is the 2-sphere equipped with the antipodal involution and Y is either a closed surface or the Euclidean plane; ( ii ) X is a closed surface different from the 2-sphere equipped with a free involution and Y is the Euclidean plane. The results are exhaustive and in the case ( ii ) are described in terms of an algebraic condition involving the first integral homology group of the orbit space .

On the Surjectivity of Certain Maps II: For Generalized Projective Spaces

Abstract:In this article we introduce generalized projective spaces (Definitions $[2.1, 2.5]$) and prove three main theorems in two different contexts. In the first context we prove, in main Theorem $A$, the surjectivity of the Chinese remainder reduction map associated to the generalized projective space of an ideal with a given factorization into mutually co-maximal ideals each of which is contained in finitely many maximal ideals, using the key concept of choice multiplier hypothesis (Definition $4.11$) which is satisfied. In the second context of surjectivity of the map from $k$-dimensional special linear group to the product of generalized projective spaces of $k$-mutually co-maximal ideals associating the $k$-rows or $k$-columns, we prove remaining two main Theorems $[\Omega,\Sigma]$ under certain conditions either on the ring or on the generalized projective spaces. Finally in the last section we pose open Questions $[9.1, 9.2]$ whose answers in a greater generality is not known.

Abstract:To every $k$-dimensional modular invariant vector space we associate a modular form on $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ of weight $2k$. We explore number theoretic properties of this form and find a sufficient condition for its vanishing which yields modular identities (e.g., Ramanujan-Watson's modular identities). Furthermore, we focus on a family of modular invariant spaces coming from suitable two-dimensional spaces via the symmetric power construction. In particular, we consider a two-dimensional space spanned by graded dimensions of certain level one modules for the affine Kac-Moody Lie algebra of type $D_4^{(1)}$. In this case, the reduction modulo prime $p=2k+3 \geq 5$ of the modular form associated to the $k$-th symmetric power classifies supersingular elliptic curves in characteristic $p$. This construction also gives a new interpretation of certain modular forms studied by Kaneko and Zagier.

Abstract:We prove that the irreducible symmetric space of complex structures on $\mathbb R^{2n}$ (resp.\ quaternionic structures on $\mathbb C^{2n}$) is spectrally unique within a $2$-parameter (resp.\ $3$-parameter) family of homogeneous metrics on the underlying differentiable manifold. Such families are strong candidates to contain all homogeneous metrics admitted on the corresponding manifolds. The main tool in the proof is an explicit expression for the smallest positive eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator associated to each homogeneous metric involved. As a second consequence of this expression, we prove that any non-symmetric Einstein metric in the homogeneous families mentioned above are $\nu$-unstable.

Abstract:Abstract We prove that for an embedded unstable one-sided minimal hypersurface of the $(n+1)$-dimensional real projective space, the Morse index is at least $n+2$, and this bound is attained by the cubic isoparametric minimal hypersurfaces. We also show that there exist closed embedded two-sided minimal surfaces in the 3-dimensional real projective space of each odd index by computing the index of the Lawson surfaces.
