Abstract:This work is devoted to prove an optimum version of the trace inequality associated to the embedding $BV(\Omega)\subset L^1(\partial\Omega)$. Special emphasis is placed on the regularity that the domain $\Omega$ should exhibit for this result to be valid.

Abstract:We first define the trace on a domain $\Omega$ which is definable in an o-minimal structure. We then show that every function $u\in W^{1,p}(\Omega)$ vanishing on the boundary in the trace sense satisfies Poincaré inequality. We finally show, given a definable family of domains $(\Omega_t)_{t\in \mathbb{R}^k}$, that the constant of this inequality remains bounded, if so does the volume of $\Omega_t$.

Normal traces and applications to continuity equations on bounded domains

Abstract:In this work, we study several properties of the normal Lebesgue trace of vector fields introduced by the second and third author in [18] in the context of the energy conservation for the Euler equations in Onsager-critical classes. Among several properties, we prove that the normal Lebesgue trace satisfies the Gauss-Green identity and, by providing explicit counterexamples, that it is a notion sitting strictly between the distributional one for measure-divergence vector fields and the strong one for $BV$ functions. These results are then applied to the study of the uniqueness of weak solutions for continuity equations on bounded domains, allowing to remove the assumption in [15] of global $BV$ regularity up to the boundary, at least around the portion of the boundary where the characteristics exit the domain or are tangent. The proof relies on an explicit renormalization formula completely characterized by the boundary datum and the positive part of the normal Lebesgue trace. In the case when the characteristics enter the domain, a counterexample shows that achieving the normal trace in the Lebesgue sense is not enough to prevent non-uniqueness, and thus a $BV$ assumption seems to be necessary for the uniqueness of weak solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove a trace regularity theorem for the solutions of general linear partial differential equations with smooth coefficients. Our result shows that by imposing additional microlocal smoothness along certain directions, the trace of the solution on a codimension-one hypersurface will be just as regular as the solution itself. The proof is based on the Hormander-Nirenberg pseudo-differential cut-off technique and a 'fattening' lemma, together with standard energy estimates.
Homogeneous Sobolev and Besov spaces on special Lipschitz domains and their traces

Abstract:We aim to contribute to the folklore of function spaces on Lipschitz domains. We prove the boundedness of the trace operator for homogeneous Sobolev and Besov spaces on a special Lipschitz domain with sharp regularity. To achieve this, we provide appropriate definitions and properties, ensuring our construction of these spaces is suitable for non-linear partial differential equations and boundary value problems. The trace theorem holds with the sharp range $s \in (\frac{1}{p}, 1 + \frac{1}{p})$. While the case of inhomogeneous function spaces is well-known, the case of homogeneous function spaces appears to be new, even for a smooth half-space. We refine several arguments from a previous paper on function spaces on the half-space and include a treatment for the endpoint cases $p=1$ and $p=+\infty$.

Weak equals strong L2 regularity for partial tangential traces on Lipschitz domains

Abstract:We investigate the boundary trace operators that naturally correspond to $\mathrm{H}(\operatorname{curl},\Omega)$, namely the tangential and twisted tangential trace, where $\Omega \subseteq \mathbb{R}^{3}$. In particular we regard partial tangential traces, i.e., we look only on a subset $\Gamma$ of the boundary $\partial\Omega$. We assume both $\Omega$ and $\Gamma$ to be strongly Lipschitz (possibly unbounded). We define the space of all $\mathrm{H}(\operatorname{curl},\Omega)$ fields that possess a $\mathrm{L}^{2}$ tangential trace in a weak sense and show that the set of all smooth fields is dense in that space, which is a generalization of Belgacem, Bernardi, Costabel and Dauge 1997. This is especially important for Maxwell's equation with mixed boundary condition as we answer the open problem by Weiss and Staffans 2013 (Section 5) for strongly Lipschitz pairs.

Abstract:We focus on the Sobolev spaces of bounded subanalytic submanifolds of . We prove that if M is such a manifold then the space is dense in (the kernel of the trace operator) for all , where is the codimension in M of the singular locus of (which is always at least 2). In the case where M is normal, i.e. when is connected for every and small, we show that is dense in for all such p . This yields some duality results between and in the case where and is a bounded subanalytic open subset of . As a byproduct, we deduce uniqueness of the (weak) solution of the Dirichlet problem associated with the Laplace equation. We then prove a version of Sobolev's Embedding Theorem for subanalytic bounded manifolds, show Gagliardo–Nirenberg's inequality (for all ), and derive some versions of Poincaré–Friedrichs' inequality. We finish with a generalization of Morrey's Embedding Theorem.

Properties of sequence of linear functionals on $BV$ with applications

Abstract:This paper is devoted to investigating the sequence of some linear functionals in the space $BV$ of finite variation functions. We prove that under certain conditions this sequence is bounded. We also prove that this result is sharp. In particular, the obtained results can be used to study convergence of some general Fourier series. Moreover, the obtained conditions seem to be new and useful also for classical orthonormal systems.

Abstract:In this paper we construct a trace operator for homogeneous Sobolev spaces defined on infinite strip-like domains. We identify an intrinsic seminorm on the resulting trace space that makes the trace operator bounded and allows us to construct a bounded right inverse. The intrinsic seminorm involves two features not encountered in the trace theory of bounded Lipschitz domains or half-spaces. First, due to the strip-like structure of the domain, the boundary splits into two infinite disconnected components. The traces onto each component are not completely independent, and the intrinsic seminorm contains a term that measures the difference between the two traces. Second, as in the usual trace theory, there is a term in the seminorm measuring the fractional Sobolev regularity of the trace functions with a difference quotient integral. However, the finite width of the strip-like domain gives rise to a screening effect that bounds the range of the difference quotient perturbation. The screened homogeneous fractional Sobolev spaces defined by this screened seminorm on arbitrary open sets are of independent interest, and we study their basic properties. We conclude the paper with applications of the trace theory to partial differential equations.

Abstract:We establish a sharp Sobolev trace inequality on the Siegel domain $\Omega_{n+1}$ involving the weighted norm-$W^{2,2}(\Omega_{n+1}, \rho^{1-2[\gamma]})$. The inequality is closely related the realization of fractional powers of the sub-Laplacian on the Heisenberg group $H^n=\partial \Omega_{n+1}$ as generalized Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators associated to the weighted poly-sublaplacian, generalizing observations of Frank--González--Monticelli--Tan.

Abstract:Given a bounded open connected set Ω ⊂ R 2 with Lipschitz boundary, we consider the class of piecewise constant maps u taking three fixed values α , β , γ ∈ R 2 , vertices of an equilateral triangle; for any u in this class, using a weak notion of Jacobian determinant valid for BV functions, we give a precise description of Det ⁡ ( ∇ ⁡ u ) and show that the relaxed graph area of u is bounded from above by a quantity related to the flat norm of Det ⁡ ( ∇ ⁡ u ) . The provided upper bound allows to show the validity of a De Giorgi conjecture regarding the relaxed area functional when one restricts to this class of piecewise constant functions.

Abstract:This paper deals with the optimal regularity for entropy solutions of conservation laws. For this purpose, we use two key ingredients: (a) fine structure of entropy solutions and (b) fractional $BV$ spaces. We show that optimality of the regularizing effect for the initial value problem from $L^\infty$ to fractional Sobolev space and fractional $BV$ spaces is valid for all time. Previously, such optimality was proven only for a finite time, before the nonlinear interaction of waves. Here for some well-chosen examples, the sharp regularity is obtained after the interaction of waves. Moreover , we prove sharp smoothing in $BV^s$ for a convex scalar conservation law with a linear source term. Next, we provide an upper bound of the maximal smoothing effect for nonlinear scalar multi-dimensional conservation laws and some hyperbolic systems in one or multi-dimension.

Abstract:This paper provides an extension for a function $u \in BV_H(\Omega)$ to a function $u_0 \in BV_H(G)$ when $\Omega$ is ``H-admissible,'' and G is a step 2 Carnot group. It is shown that H-admissible domains include non-characteristic domains and domains in groups of Heisenberg type which have a partial symmetry about characteristic points. An example is given of a domain that is $C^{1,\alpha}$, $\alpha <1$, that is not H-admissible. Further, when $\Omega$ is H-admissible a trace theorem is proved for $u \in BV_H(\Omega)$.

Abstract:In this article, we consider a class of strictly hyperbolic triangular systems involving a transport equation. Such systems are known to create measure solutions for the initial value problem. Adding a stronger transversality assumption on the fields, we are able to obtain solutions in $L^\infty$ under optimal fractional $BV$ regularity of the initial data. Our results show that the critical fractional regularity is $s=1/3$. We also construct an initial data that is not in $BV^{1/3}$ but for which a blow-up in $L^\infty$ occurs, proving the optimality of our results.

Abstract:An accurate functional inequality for Div-BV positive symmetric tensors $A$ in a bounded domain $U\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ arises whenever the tangential part of the normal trace $\gamma_\nu A\sim A\vec\nu$ is a finite measure over $\partial U$. The proof involves an extension operator to a neighbourhood of $\bar U$. The resulting inequality depends upon the domain only through the $C^3$-regularity of $\partial U$, some constant involving the curvature and its first derivatives.This abstract statement applies to several models of Gas Dynamics (Euler system, Hard Spheres dynamics), as the boundary condition (slip, or reflection) tells us that $A\vec\nu$ is parallel to $\vec\nu$, where $A$ is the mass-momentum tensor.
