Abstract:This paper deals with the optimal regularity for entropy solutions of conservation laws. For this purpose, we use two key ingredients: (a) fine structure of entropy solutions and (b) fractional $BV$ spaces. We show that optimality of the regularizing effect for the initial value problem from $L^\infty$ to fractional Sobolev space and fractional $BV$ spaces is valid for all time. Previously, such optimality was proven only for a finite time, before the nonlinear interaction of waves. Here for some well-chosen examples, the sharp regularity is obtained after the interaction of waves. Moreover , we prove sharp smoothing in $BV^s$ for a convex scalar conservation law with a linear source term. Next, we provide an upper bound of the maximal smoothing effect for nonlinear scalar multi-dimensional conservation laws and some hyperbolic systems in one or multi-dimension.

Optimal second order boundary regularity for solutions to $p$-Laplace equations

Abstract:Solutions to $p$-Laplace equations are not, in general, of class $C^2$. The study of Sobolev regularity of the second derivatives is, therefore, a crucial issue. An important contribution by Cianchi and Maz'ya shows that, if the source term is in $L^2$, then the field $|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u$ is in $W^{1,2}$. The $L^2$-regularity of the source term is also a necessary condition. Here, under suitable assumptions, we obtain sharp second order estimates, thus proving the optimal regularity of the vector field $|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u$, up to the boundary.

Abstract:We find an iteration technique and thus prove the optimal global regularity for the boundary value problem of a class of singular differential equations with strongly singular lower terms at the boundary. As applications, we obtain the regularity for the radial solutions of Ginzburg-Landau equations and harmonic maps.

Abstract:We classify regularity for Lagrangian mean curvature type equations, which include the potential equation for prescribed Lagrangian mean curvature and those for Lagrangian mean curvature flow self-shrinkers and expanders, translating solitons, and rotating solitons. Convex solutions of the second boundary value problem for certain such equations were constructed by Brendle-Warren (J Differ Geom 84(2):267-287, 2010), Huang (J Funct Anal 269(4):1095-1114, 2015), and Wang-Huang-Bao (Calc Var Partial Differ Equ 62(3):74 2023). We first show that convex viscosity solutions are regular provided the Lagrangian angle or phase is and convex in the gradient variable. We next show that for merely Hölder continuous phases, convex solutions are regular if they are for sufficiently large . Singular solutions are given to show that each condition is optimal and that the Hölder exponent is sharp. Along the way, we generalize the constant rank theorem of Bian and Guan to include arbitrary dependence on the Legendre transform.

Abstract:In this paper we study the optimal global regularity for a singular Monge–Ampère type equation which arises from a few geometric problems. We find that the global regularity does not depend on the smoothness of domain, but it does depend on the convexity of the domain. We introduce (a,η) type to describe the convexity. As a result, we show that the more convex is the domain, the better is the regularity of the solution. In particular, the regularity is the best near angular points.

Abstract:In this paper we consider optimal control problems where the control variable is a potential and the state equation is an elliptic partial differential equation of Schrödinger type, governed by the Laplace operator. The cost functional involves the solution of the state equation and a penalization term for the control variable. While the existence of an optimal solution simply follows by the direct methods of the calculus of variations, the regularity of the optimal potential is a difficult question and under the general assumptions we consider, no better regularity than the BV one can be expected. This happens in particular for the cases in which a bang-bang solution occurs, where optimal potentials are characteristic functions of a domain. We prove the BV regularity of optimal solutions through a regularity result for PDEs. Some numerical simulations show the behavior of optimal potentials in some particular cases.

Abstract:We study the optimal boundary regularity of solutions to Dirichlet problems involving the logarithmic Laplacian. Our proofs are based on the construction of suitable barriers via the Kelvin transform and direct computations. As applications of our results, we show a Hopf-type Lemma for nonnegative weak solutions and the uniqueness of solutions to some nonlinear problems.

Starting with the local up-to-boundary Lipschitz regularity for the homogeneous equation, we derive the global a priori estimates via Vitali covering coupling with p-harmonic approximation. Moreover, the exponents in the a priori estimates come from the intrinsic scaling.
Entropy solutions in $BV^s$ for a class of triangular systems involving a transport equation

Abstract:In this article, we consider a class of strictly hyperbolic triangular systems involving a transport equation. Such systems are known to create measure solutions for the initial value problem. Adding a stronger transversality assumption on the fields, we are able to obtain solutions in $L^\infty$ under optimal fractional $BV$ regularity of the initial data. Our results show that the critical fractional regularity is $s=1/3$. We also construct an initial data that is not in $BV^{1/3}$ but for which a blow-up in $L^\infty$ occurs, proving the optimality of our results.

Abstract:The equation Lu = ƒ;(x, u) on B × (0, ∞), B bounded, smooth domain in Rn with nonlinear boundary conditions ∂u∂v = g(x, u) on ∂B × (0, ∞) is studied, L being the uniformly parabolic operator with time independent coefficients. Under suitable conditions on the nonlinearities (that do not involve monotonicity) global existence, uniqueness, compactness of the orbits and certain regularizing effects of the semigroup are established. In the case that L is in divergence form it is shown that under generic conditions orbits tend, as t → + ∞, to some equilibrium and that the stable equilibria attract essentially (Baire category) the whole space L2(B).

Abstract:Higher Sobolev and Hölder regularity is studied for local weak solutions of the fractional $p$-Laplace equation of order $s$ in the case $p\ge 2$. Depending on the regime considered, i.e. $$0<s\le\tfrac{p-2}{p}\quad \text{or} \quad\tfrac{p-2}{p}<s<1,$$ precise local estimates are proven. The relevant estimates are stable if the fractional order $s$ reaches $1$; the known Sobolev regularity estimates for the local $p$-Laplace are recovered. The case $p=2$ reproduces the almost $W^{1+s,2}_{\rm loc}$-regularity for the fractional Laplace equation of any order $s\in(0,1)$.

Improved regularity estimates for Hardy-Hénon-type equations driven by the $\infty$-Laplacian

Abstract:In this work, we establish sharp and improved regularity estimates for viscosity solutions of Hardy-Hénon-type equations with possibly singular weights and strong absorption governed by the $\infty$-Laplacian $$ \Delta_{\infty} u(x) = |x|^{\alpha}u_+^m(x) \quad \text{in} \quad B_1, $$ under suitable assumptions on the data. In this setting, we derive an explicit regularity exponent that depends only on universal parameters. Additionally, we prove non-degeneracy properties, providing further geometric insights into the nature of these solutions. Our regularity estimates not only improve but also extend, to some extent, the previously obtained results for zero-obstacle and dead-core problems driven by the $\infty$-Laplacian. As an application of our findings, we also address some Liouville-type results for this class of equations.

Abstract:We prove optimal regularity estimates for viscosity solutions to a class of fully nonlinear nonlocal equations with unbounded source terms. More precisely, depending on the integrability of the source term $f \in L^p(B_1)$, we establish that solutions belong to classes ranging from $C^{\sigma-d/p}$ to $C^\sigma$, at critical thresholds. We use approximation techniques and Liouville-type arguments. These results represent a novel contribution, providing the first such estimates in the context of not necessarily concave nonlocal equations.

Abstract:For the [Formula: see text]-system with large BV initial data, an assumption introduced in [N. S. Bakhvalov, Ž. Vyčisl. Mat. i Mat. Fiz. (Russian) 10 (1970) 969–980] by Bakhvalov guarantees the global existence of entropy weak solutions with uniformly bounded total variation. The present paper provides a partial converse to this result. Whenever Bakhvalov’s condition does not hold, we show that there exist front tracking approximate solutions, with uniformly positive density, whose total variation becomes arbitrarily large. The construction extends the arguments in [A. Bressan, G. Chen and Q. Zhang, J. Diff. Eqs. 256(8) (2014) 3067–3085] to a general class of pressure laws.

Abstract:We consider vector-valued elliptic boundary value problems and parabolic initial-boundary value problems on abstract Banach spaces of class HT . For a very general class of boundary conditions, which includes, but is not limited to the classical cases of Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin boundary conditions, we show L p -maximal regularity of the system. We do not restrict ourselves to the homogeneous case, but also identify the temporal and boundary trace spaces, which are both sufficient and necessary to obtain a unique solution in the L p -maximal regularity space. Our results are based on a (partial) Fourier–Laplace transform of the problem in the half-space case, leading to elliptic boundary value problems which have to satisfy variants of the Lopatinskii–Shapiro condition [34] to be solvable. The parabolic theory is then developed with use of tools from modern harmonic analysis such as the bounded H ∞ -calculus and the Kalton–Weis theorem.
