Abstract:Infinite families of 3-dimensional closed graph manifolds and closed Seifert fibered spaces are exhibited, each member of which contains an essential torus not detected by ideal points of the variety of $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb{F})$-characters over any algebraically closed field $\mathbb{F}$.

Abstract:Ivansic proved that there is a link $L$ of five tori in $S^4$ with hyperbolic complement. We describe $L$ explicitly and study its properties, and discover that $L$ is in many aspects similar to the Borromean rings in $S^3$. In particular the following hold: (1) Any two tori in $L$ are unlinked, but three are not; (2) The complement $M=S^4\setminus L$ is integral arithmetic hyperbolic; (3) The symmetry group of $L$ acts $k$-transitively on its components for all $k$; (4) The double branched covering over $L$ has geometry $\mathbb H^2 \times \mathbb H^2$; (5) The fundamental group of $M$ has a nice presentation via commutators; (6) The Alexander ideal is explicit; (7) Every class $x\in H^1(M, \mathbb Z)=\mathbb Z^5$ with $x_i\neq 0$ is represented by a perfect circle-valued Morse function; (8) By longitudinal Dehn surgery along $L$ we get a closed 4-manifold with fundamental group $\mathbb Z^5$; (9) The link $L$ can be put in perfect position. This leads also to the first descriptions of a cusped hyperbolic 4-manifold as a complement of tori in $\mathbb R \mathbb P^4$ and of some explicit Lagrangian tori in the product of two surfaces of genus two.

Abstract:We characterize the actions of compact tori on smooth closed manifolds for which the orbit space is a topological manifold (either closed or with boundary). For closed manifolds, the result was originally proved by Styrt in 2009. We give a new proof for closed manifolds which is also applicable to manifolds with boundary. In our arguments, we use the result of Provan and Billera who characterized matroid complexes which are pseudomanifolds. We study the combinatorial structure of torus actions whose orbit spaces are manifolds. In two appendix sections, we give an overview of two theories related to our work. The first one is the combinatorial theory of Leontief substitution systems from mathematical economics. The second one is the topological Kaluza–Klein model of Dirac's monopole studied by Atiyah. The aim of these sections is to draw some bridges between disciplines and motivate further studies in toric topology.
SU(2)-abelian graph manifolds with a single JSJ torus

Abstract:A 3-manifold is called \emph{SU(2)}-abelian if every SU(2)-representation of its fundamental group has abelian image. We classify, in terms of the Seifert coefficients, SU(2)-abelian 3-manifolds among the family of graph manifolds obtained by gluing two Seifert spaces both fibred over a disk and with two singular fibers. Finally, we prove that these SU(2)-abelian manifolds are Heegaard Floer homology L-spaces.

Abstract:In de Velloso Vianna (J Topol 9(2):535-551, 2016), Vianna constructed infinitely many exotic Lagrangian tori in . We lift these tori to higher dimensional projective spaces and show that they remain non-symplectomorphic. Our proof is elementary except for an application of the wall-crossing formula of Pascaleff and Tonkonog (Adv Math 361:106850, 2020).

Abstract:We express the total space of a principal circle bundle over a connected sum of two manifolds in terms of the total spaces of circle bundles over each summand, provided certain conditions hold. We then apply this result to provide sufficient conditions for the existence of free circle and torus actions on connected sums of products of spheres and obtain a topological classification of closed, simply-connected manifolds with a free cohomogeneity-four torus action. As a corollary, we obtain infinitely-many manifolds with Riemannian metrics of positive Ricci curvature and isometric torus actions.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the geometry of the moduli space of representations of the fundamental group of the complement of a torus link into an algebraic group G, an algebraic variety known as the G-character variety of the torus link. These torus links are a family of links in the 3-dimensional sphere formed by stacking several copies of torus knots. We develop an intrinsic stratification of the variety that allows us to relate its geometry with the one of the underlying torus knot. Using this information, we explicitly compute the E-polynomial associated to the Hodge structure of these varieties for $G=SL_2(\mathbb{C})$ and $SL_3(\mathbb{C})$, for an arbitrary torus link, showing an unexpected relation with the number of strands of the link.

Semi-Local Exotic Lagrangian Tori in Dimension Four

Abstract:We study exotic Lagrangian tori in dimension four. In certain Stein domains $B_{dpq}$ (which naturally appear in almost toric fibrations) we find $d+1$ families of monotone Lagrangian tori which are mutually distinct, up to symplectomorphisms. We prove that these remain distinct under embeddings of $B_{dpq}$ into geometrically bounded symplectic four-manifolds. We show that there are infinitely many different such embeddings when $X$ is compact and (almost) toric and hence conclude that $X$ contains arbitrarily many Lagrangian tori which are distinct up to symplectomorphisms of $X$. In dimension four arbitrarily many different Lagrangian tori were previously known only in del Pezzo surfaces. Neither the embedded tori, nor the ambient space $X$ needs to be monotone for our methods to work.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{M}_{0}^n$ be the class of closed, simply-connected, non-negatively curved Riemannian manifolds admitting an isometric, effective, isotropy-maximal torus action. We prove that if $M\in \mathcal{M}_{0}^n$, then $M$ is equivariantly diffeomorphic to the free linear quotient by a torus of a product of spheres of dimensions greater than or equal to three. As an immediate consequence, we prove the Maximal Symmetry Rank Conjecture for all $M\in \mathcal{M}_{0}^n$. Finally, we show the Maximal Symmetry Rank Conjecture for simply-connected, non-negatively curved manifolds holds for dimensions less than or equal to nine without assuming the torus action is almost isotropy-maximal or isotropy-maximal.

Abstract:In this paper, we classify smooth, contractible affine varieties equipped with faithful torus actions of complexity two, having a unique fixed point and a two-dimensional algebraic quotient isomorphic to a toric blow-up of a toric surface. These varieties are of particular interest as they represent the simplest candidates for potential counterexamples to the linearization conjecture in affine geometry.

Abstract:Two-sided incompressible surfaces in Seifert fiber spaces with isolated singular fibers are well-understood. Frohman [3] and Rannard [6] have shown that one-sided incompressible surfaces in Seifert fiber spaces which have isolated singular fibers are either pseudo-horizontal or psuedo-vertical. We extend their result to characterise essential surfaces in Seifert fiber spaces which may have singular surfaces, i.e., in S1 -foliated 3-manifolds which have fibered model neighbourhoods that are isomorphic to either a fibered solid torus or a fibered solid Klein bottle.

Punctured JSJ tori and tautological extensions of Azumaya algebras

Abstract:The $SL_2(\mathbb{C})$ character variety $X(M)$ has emerged as an important tool in studying the topology of hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Chinburg-Reid-Stover constructed arithmetic invariants stemming from a canonical Azumaya algebra over the normalization of an irreducible component of $X(M)$ containing a lift of the holonomy representation of $M$. We provide an explicit topological criterion for extending the canonical Azumaya algebra over an ideal point, potentially leading to finer arithmetic invariants than those of Chinburg-Reid-Stover. This topological criterion involves Culler-Shalen theory and, in some cases, JSJ decompositions of toroidal Dehn fillings of knot complements in the three-sphere. Inspired by the work of Paoluzzi-Porti and Tillmann, we provide examples of several cases where these refined invariants exist. Along the way, we show that certain families of Seifert surfaces in hyperbolic knot complements can be associated to ideal points of character varieties.

Examples of topologically unknotted tori

Abstract:We show that certain smooth tori with group $\mathbb{Z}$ in $S^4$ have exteriors with standard equivariant intersection forms, and so are topologically unknotted. These include the turned 1-twist-spun tori in the 4-sphere constructed by Boyle, the union of the genus one Seifert surface of Cochran and Davis that has no slice derivative with a ribbon disc, and tori with precisely four critical points whose middle level set is a 2-component link with vanishing Alexander polynomial. This gives evidence towards the conjecture that all $\mathbb{Z}$-surfaces in $S^4$ are topologically unknotted, which is open for genus one and two. It is unclear whether these tori are smoothly unknotted, except for tori with four critical points whose middle level set is a split link. The double cover of $S^4$ branched along any of these surfaces is a potentially exotic copy of $S^2 \times S^2$, and, in the case of turned twisted tori, we show they cannot be distinguished from $S^2 \times S^2$ using Seiberg-Witten invariants.

Abstract:Examples of aspherical closed symplectic 4-manifolds are presented whose Sullivan minimal models are (1,n)-formal for any n, without being formal. They have as cohomology algebra, signature, canonical class, those of a product of a closed Riemann surface of genus g>1 and an elliptic curve, and the fundamental group, resp. $A_{\infty}$ category defined by their de Rham complex, is isomorphic to that of the product of surfaces up to brackets of order n+1, resp. products of order n+1. Nevertheless, the manifolds do not admit any holomorphic structure.

Abstract:Motivated by a general question addressed by Mario Baldassarri in 1956, we discuss characterizations of the Pseudo-Abelian Varieties introduced by Roth, and we introduce a first new notion, of Manifolds Isogenous to a k-Torus Product: the latter have the last k Chern classes trivial in rational cohomology and vanishing Chern numbers. We show that in dimension 2 the latter class is the correct substitute for some incorrect assertions by Enriques, Dantoni, Roth and Baldassarri: these are the surfaces with $K_X$ nef and $c_2(X)=0 \in H^4(X, \mathbb{Z})$. We observe in the last section, using a construction by Chad Schoen, that such a simple similar picture does not hold in higher dimension. We discuss then, as a class of solutions to Baldassarri's question, manifolds isogenous to projective (respectively: Kähler) manifolds whose tangent bundle or whose cotangent bundle has a trivial subbundle of positive rank. We see that the class of `partially framed' projective manifolds (that is, whose tangent bundle has a trivial subbundle) consists, in the case where $K_X$ is nef, of the Pseudo-Abelian varieties of Roth; while the class of `partially co-framed' projective manifolds is not yet fully understood in spite of the new results that we are able to show here: and we formulate some open questions and conjectures. In the course of the paper we address also the case of more general compact complex Manifolds, introducing the new notions of suspensions over parallelizable Manifolds, of twisted hyperelliptic Manifolds, and we describe the known results under the Kähler assumption.

Abstract:Given $\mathbf{n}=(n_{1},\ldots,n_{r})\in\mathbb{N}^r$, let $\Gamma_{\mathbf{n}}$ be a group presentable as $\left\langle \gamma_{1},\ldots,\gamma_{k}\:|\:\gamma_{1}^{n_{1}}=\gamma_{2}^{n_{2}}=\cdots=\gamma_{r}^{n_{r}}\right\rangle. $ If $\gcd(n_i,n_j)=1$ for all $i\not=j$, we say $\Gamma_{\mathbf{n}}$ is a "generalized torus knot group" and otherwise say it is a "generalized torus link group." This definition includes torus knot and link groups ($r=2$), that is, fundamental groups of the complement of a torus knot or link in $S^{3}$. Let $G$ be a connected complex reductive affine algebraic group. We show that the $G$-character varieties of generalized torus knot groups are path-connected. We then count the number of irreducible components of the $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$-character varieties of $\Gamma_{\mathbf{n}}$ when $n_i$ is odd for all $i$.

Abstract:We produce examples of pairwise non-diffeomorphic closed irreducible 4-manifolds with non-trivial free abelian fundamental group of rank less than three and small Euler characteristic. These exotic smooth structures become standard after taking a connected sum with a single copy of $S^2\times S^2$. The contributions of this paper include an explicit mechanism to computate the equivariant intersection form of 4-manifolds that are obtained via torus surgeries and a new stabilization result concerning exotic smooth structures with arbitrary fundamental group.

Abstract:We classify $SU(2)$-cyclic and $SU(2)$-abelian 3-manifolds, for which every representation of the fundamental group into $SU(2)$ has cyclic or abelian image respectively, among geometric 3-manifolds which are not hyperbolic. As an application, we give examples of hyperbolic 3-manifolds which do not admit degree-1 maps to any Seifert fibered manifold other than $S^3$ or a lens space. We also produce infinitely many one-cusped hyperbolic manifolds with at least four $SU(2)$-cyclic Dehn fillings, one more than the number of cyclic fillings allowed by the cyclic surgery theorem.

LS-category and topological complexity of real torus manifolds and Dold manifolds of real torus type

Abstract:The real torus manifolds are a generalization of small covers and generalized real Bott manifolds. We compute the LS-category of these manifolds under some constraints and obtain sharp bounds on their topological complexities. We obtain a simplified description of their cohomology ring and discuss a relation on the cup-product of its generators. We obtain the sharp bounds on their zero-divisors-cup-lengths. We improve the dimensional upper bound on their topological complexity. We also show that under certain hypotheses, the topological complexity of real torus manifolds of dimension $n$ is either $2n$ or $2n+1$. We compute the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-equivariant LS-category of any small cover when the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-fixed points are path connected. We then compute the LS-category of Dold manifolds of real torus type and obtain sharp bounds on their topological complexity. In the end, we obtain sharp bounds on the symmetric topological complexity of a class of these manifolds.
