Abstract:Ivansic proved that there is a link $L$ of five tori in $S^4$ with hyperbolic complement. We describe $L$ explicitly and study its properties, and discover that $L$ is in many aspects similar to the Borromean rings in $S^3$. In particular the following hold: (1) Any two tori in $L$ are unlinked, but three are not; (2) The complement $M=S^4\setminus L$ is integral arithmetic hyperbolic; (3) The symmetry group of $L$ acts $k$-transitively on its components for all $k$; (4) The double branched covering over $L$ has geometry $\mathbb H^2 \times \mathbb H^2$; (5) The fundamental group of $M$ has a nice presentation via commutators; (6) The Alexander ideal is explicit; (7) Every class $x\in H^1(M, \mathbb Z)=\mathbb Z^5$ with $x_i\neq 0$ is represented by a perfect circle-valued Morse function; (8) By longitudinal Dehn surgery along $L$ we get a closed 4-manifold with fundamental group $\mathbb Z^5$; (9) The link $L$ can be put in perfect position. This leads also to the first descriptions of a cusped hyperbolic 4-manifold as a complement of tori in $\mathbb R \mathbb P^4$ and of some explicit Lagrangian tori in the product of two surfaces of genus two.

Totally Geodesic Surfaces in Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds: Algorithms and Examples

Abstract:Finding a totally geodesic surface, an embedded surface where the geodesics in the surface are also geodesics in the surrounding manifold, has been a problem of interest in the study of 3-manifolds. This has especially been of interest in hyperbolic 3-manifolds and knot complements, complements of piecewise-linearly embedded circles in the 3-sphere. This is due to Menasco-Reid's conjecture stating that hyperbolic knot complements do not contain such surfaces. Here, we present an algorithm that determines whether a given surface is totally geodesic and an algorithm that checks whether a given 3-manifold contains a totally geodesic surface. We applied our algorithm on over 150,000 3-manifolds and discovered nine 3-manifolds with totally geodesic surfaces. Additionally, we verified Menasco-Reid's conjecture for knots up to 12 crossings.

Abstract:We prove that in the moduli space Md of degree d2 rational maps, any hyperbolic component in the disconnectedness locus and of Cantor circle type is a finite quotient of R4d-4-nxTn, where n is determined by dynamics. The proof uses some ideas from Riemann surface theory (Abel's Theorem), dynamical system and algebraic topology.

Abstract:We show that for at most three closed geodesics with linearly independent directions, the homeomorphism type of its complement in the 3-torus is determine by the orbit of their direction vectors subspaces under the action of $\PSL_3(\mathbb{Z}).$ Moreover, we provide asymptotically sharp volume bounds for a family of closed geodesics complements. The bounds depend only on the distance in the Farey graph.

Abstract:The non-trivial complete totally geodesic submanifolds of the complex hyperbolic plane $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ are the complex geodesics and the real planes. We present two new proofs for this fact. One is a short proof based on an algebraic formula for the Riemann curvature tensor due to S. Anan'in and C. Grossi and resembles the traditional proof using Lie theory. The other is purely elementary and geometric, relying on the structures in $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ instead of general theories. In this second approach, we prove a slightly stronger result: the only non-trivial complete totally geodesic subsets of $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ are the complex geodesics and the real planes without assuming that the subsets are submanifolds a priori. This second proof is also intriguing for only making use of elementary geometric constructions.

Abstract:I construct infinite families of knots and links with totally geodesic spanning surfaces, which we call TGS knots and TGS links, in various 3-manifolds. These 3-manifolds include thickened orientable surfaces, the sphere cross the circle, lens spaces, and the solid torus. The totally geodesic spanning surfaces of knots embedded in thickened orientable surfaces are the first examples of totally geodesic spanning surfaces of virtual knots.

Abstract:We show that the hyperbolic structure on a closed, orientable, hyperbolic 3-manifold can be constructed from a solution to the hyperbolic gluing equations using any triangulation with essential edges. The key ingredients in the proof are Thurston's spinning construction and a volume rigidity result attributed by Dunfield to Thurston, Gromov and Goldman. As an application, we show that this gives a new algorithm to detect hyperbolic structures on closed 3-manifolds.

Abstract:Let $N$ be a compact, orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold whose boundary is a connected totally geodesic surface of genus $2$. If $N$ has Heegaard genus at least $5$, then its volume is greater than $2V_{\rm oct}$, where $V_{\rm oct}=3.66\ldots$ denotes the volume of a regular ideal hyperbolic octahedron in $\mathbb{H}^3$. This improves the lower bound given in our earlier paper ``Volume and topology of bounded and closed hyperbolic $3$-manifolds.'' One ingredient in the improved bound is that in a crucial case, instead of using a single ``muffin'' in $N$ in the sense of Kojima and Miyamoto, we use two disjoint muffins. By combining the result about manifolds with geodesic boundary with the $\log(2k-1)$ theorem and results due to Agol-Culler-Shalen and Shalen-Wagreich, we show that if $M$ is a closed, orientable hyperbolic $3$-manifold with $\mathop{\rm vol} M\le V_{\rm oct}/2$, then $\dim H_1(M;\mathbb{F}_2)\le4$. We also provide new lower bounds for the volumes of closed hyperbolic $3$-manifolds whose cohomology ring over $\mathbb{F}_2$ satisfies certain restrictions; these improve results that were proved in ``Volume and topology$\ldots$.''

Abstract:We prove that for any compact orientable connected 3-manifold with torus boundary, a concatenation of it and the direct product of the circle and the Klein bottle with an open 2-disk removed admits a Lagrangian embedding into the standard symplectic 6-space. Abstract:This paper gives the classifications of certain manifolds $\mathcal{M}$ of dimension $13$ up to diffeomorphism, homeomorphism, and homotopy equivalence, whose cohomology rings are isomorphic to $H^\ast(\mathrm{CP}^3\times S^7;\mathbb{Z})$. Moreover, we prove that either $\mathcal{M}$ or $\mathcal{M}\#\Sigma^{13}$ admits a metric of non-negative sectional curvature where $\Sigma^{13}$ is a certain exotic sphere of dimension 13.

Abstract:We prove the non-existence of special generic maps on $3$-dimensional complex projective space as our new result and a corollary by several methods. Special generic maps are generalizations of Morse functions with exactly two singular points on spheres and canonical projections of unit spheres are special generic. Our paper focuses on such maps on closed and simply-connected manifolds of classes containing the $3$-dimensional complex projective space. The differentiable structures of spheres admitting special generic maps are known to be restricted strongly. Special generic maps on closed and simply-connected manifolds and projective spaces have been studied by various people including the author. The (non-)existence and construction are main problems. Studies on such maps on closed and simply-connected manifolds whose dimensions are greater than $5$ have been difficult.

Abstract:Let ${\mathbb{Q}^3}$ be the moduli space of oriented circles in the three dimensional unit sphere ${\mathbb{S}^3}$. Given a natural complex structure such space becomes a three dimensional complex manifold, with a Möbius invariant Hermitian metric h of type (2, 1). Up to Möbius transformations, all geodesics with respect to the Lorentz metric g = Re(h) on ${\mathbb{Q}^3}$ are determined to form a one-parameter family of circles on a helicoid in a space form ${\mathbb{R}^3, \mathbb{H}^3}$ or ${\mathbb{S}^{3}}$, resp. We show also that any two oriented circles in ${\mathbb{S}^3}$ are connected by countably infinitely many geodesics in ${\mathbb{Q}^3}$.
