Abstract:The system under studying is for a piezoelectric beams system with magnetic effects, frictional dampings and source terms. We use the concavity method to study the competition of the dampings and the sources that leads to a blow-up result for solutions with negative initial energy.

Abstract:The dynamic behavior of a multilayered, perfectly bonded piezoelectric/magnetostrictive composite hollow cylinder under radial deformation is investigated. The superposition method, the state space method as well as the separation of variables method are elegantly integrated in the solution approach. The governing equations are finally transformed into two Volterra integral equations of the second kind with respect to two functions of time. The elastic, electric and magnetic fields are finally obtained according to solving the integral equations. Free vibrations and transient responses are demonstrated by numerical experiments.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the stability of coupled equations modelling a 2D piezoelectric beam with magnetic effect with only one local viscous damping on a rectangular or annular domain without geometric conditions. In the rectangular case, combining an orthonormal basis decomposition with frequency-multiplier techniques and using well-chosen cut-off functions, we prove that the energy of the system decays polynomially with the rate .When the domain is annular, the system is proved to be exponentially stable. An appropriate change of functions is required to eliminate the first order derivatives of the involved two functions: the transverse displacement of the beam and the total load of the electric displacement along the transverse direction.

Abstract:By means of the three-dimensional general solution in displacement functions (weighted harmonic functions) for piezoelectric materials, the general solution of stress components and electric displacements expressed by the displacement functions is derived by use of the constitutive relation and the equilibrium equations. Based on this general solution, a series of problems is solved by the trial-and-error method, including circular plate (or cylinder), annular plate (or hollow cylinder), cone and hollow cone. These problems are circular plates and cylinders under uniform radial or axial tension and electric displacements as well as pure bending, simply-supported circular plates subjected to uniformly distributed loads, rotating disks and circular shafts, cones or hollow cones subjected to concentrated forces plus charge and concentrated force couple at their apex, etc. Analytical solutions to various problems are obtained. When the cone apex angle 2α equals π, the solutions for the cases of concentrated forces plus point charges and torsion reduce to the simple and practical solutions of the half-space problem.

Abstract:In this work, we focus on a one-dimensional initial-boundary value problem of a thermoelastic piezoelectric beam in the presence of magnetic effects with distributed delay acting in the mechanical equation. The well-posedness of the system is initially demonstrated by applying semigroup theory (Hille-Yosida theorem). Also, based on the construction of a Lyapunov functional, which is equivalent to the energy functional of the problem through multiplier techniques, we show that a unique dissipation through frictional damping is strong enough to ensure exponential stabilization of the model. Next, the results are compared to those of the electrostatic or quasi-static approaches. Moreover, we consider the fully dynamic and electrostatic or quasi-static piezoelectric beams with thermal effects, boundary feedback controllers and boundary distributed delays and using the multipliers technique, we establish an exponential stability result of the solution. Our results are related to the distributed delay weights. Finally, we give some numerical tests to illustrate the theoretical result.

Abstract:For the orthotropic piezoelectric plane problem, a series of piezoelectric beams is solved and the corresponding exact solutions are obtained with the trial-and-error method on the basis of the general solution in the case of three distinct eigenvalues, in which all displacements, electrical potential, stresses and electrical displacements are expressed by three displacement functions in terms of harmonic polynomials. These problems are rectangular beams having rigid body displacements and identical electrical potential, rectangular beams under uniform tension and electric displacement as well as pure shearing and pure bending, beams of two free ends subjected to uniform electrical potential on the upper and lower surfaces.

Abstract:It is well known that magnetic energy of the piezoelectric beam is relatively small, and it does not change the overall dynamics. Therefore, the models, relying on electrostatic or quasi-static approaches, completely ignore the magnetic energy stored/produced in the beam. A single piezoelectric beam model without the magnetic effects is known to be exactly observable and exponentially stabilizable in the energy space. However, the model with the magnetic effects is proved to be not exactly observable / exponentially stabilizable in the energy space for almost all choices of material parameters. Moreover, even strong stability is not achievable for many values of the material parameters. In this paper, it is shown that the uncontrolled system is exactly observable in a space larger than the energy space. Then, by using a $B^*-$type feedback controller, explicit polynomial decay estimates are obtained for more regular initial data. Unlike the classical counterparts, this choice of feedback corresponds to the current flowing through the electrodes, and it matches better with the physics of the model. The results obtained in this manuscript have direct implications on the controllability/stabilizability of smart structures such as elastic beams/plates with piezoelectric patches and the active constrained layer (ACL) damped beams/plates.

Abstract:Models for piezoelectric beams using Euler-Bernoulli small displacement theory predict the dynamics of slender beams at the low frequency accurately but are insufficient for beams vibrating at high frequencies or beams with low length-to-width aspect ratios. A more thorough model that includes the effects of rotational inertia and shear strain, Mindlin-Timoshenko small displacement theory, is needed to predict the dynamics more accurately for these cases. Moreover, existing models ignore the magnetic effects since the magnetic effects are relatively small. However, it was shown recently \cite{O-M1} that these effects can substantially change the controllability and stabilizability properties of even a single piezoelectric beam. In this paper, we use a variational approach to derive models that include magnetic effects for an elastic beam with two piezoelectric patches actuated by different voltage sources. Both Euler-Bernoulli and Mindlin-Timoshenko small displacement theories are considered. Due to the magnetic effects, the equations are quite different from the standard equations.

The Exponential Stabilization of a Heat and Piezoelectric Beam Interaction with Static or Hybrid Feedback Controllers

Abstract:This study investigates a strongly-coupled system of partial differential equations (PDE) governing heat transfer in a copper rod, longitudinal vibrations, and total charge accumulation at electrodes within a magnetizable piezoelectric beam. Conducted within the transmission line framework, the analysis reveals profound interactions between traveling electromagnetic and mechanical waves in magnetizable piezoelectric beams, despite disparities in their velocities. Findings suggest that in the open-loop scenario, the interaction of heat and beam dynamics lacks exponential stability solely considering thermal effects. To confront this challenge, two types of boundary-type state feedback controllers are proposed: (i) employing static feedback controllers entirely and (ii) adopting a hybrid approach wherein the electrical controller dynamically enhances system dynamics. In both cases, solutions of the PDE systems demonstrate exponential stability through meticulously formulated Lyapunov functions with diverse multipliers. The proposed proof technique establishes a robust foundation for demonstrating the exponential stability of Finite-Difference-based model reductions as the discretization parameter approaches zero.

Abstract:In this paper, a piezoelectric beam is investigated under fully‐dynamic magnetic effects and long‐range dielectric and strain memories. The mathematical model under consideration is for the type of piezoelectric beams which strongly couple the electromagnetic effects with mechanical vibrations. This particular model is highly preferred for complex systems for which the vibrational profile is under the strong influence of the electromagnetic interactions. By a careful analysis, an optimal energy decay result is explicitly established under a wide class of kernel functions of the memory terms. The results are based on the multipliers technique. These results are compared to the widely‐used electrostatic/quasi‐static models which entirely exclude magnetic effects.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider one-dimensional nonlinear piezoelectric beams with thermal and magnetic effects in the presence of a distributed delay term acting on the heat equation. First, we show that the system is well-posed in the sense of a semigroup. Through the construction of an appropriate Lyapunov functional, we establish a general decay result for the solutions of the system, for which the exponential and polynomial decays are only special cases, under a suitable assumption on the weight of the delay that the damping effect through heat conduction is strong enough to stabilize the system even in the presence of a time delay. Furthermore, our result does not depend on any relationship between system parameters.

Blow-up phenomena for a class of extensible beam equations

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the initial boundary value problem of the following nonlinear extensible beam equation with nonlinear damping term $$u_{t t}+\Delta^2 u-M\left(\|\nabla u\|^2\right) \Delta u-\Delta u_t+\left|u_t\right|^{r-1} u_t=|u|^{p-1} u$$ which was considered by Yang et al. (Advanced Nonlinear Studies 2022; 22:436-468). We consider the problem with the nonlinear damping and establish the finite time blow-up of the solution for the initial data at arbitrary high energy level, including the estimate lower and upper bounds of the blowup time. The result provides some affirmative answer to the open problems given in (Advanced Nonlinear Studies 2022; 22:436-468).

Abstract:The dynamic partial differential equation (PDE) model governing longitudinal oscillations in magnetizable piezoelectric beams exhibits exponentially stable solutions when subjected to two boundary state feedback controllers. An analytically established exponential decay rate by the Lyapunov approach ensures stabilization of the system to equilibrium, though the actual decay rate could potentially be improved. The decay rate of the closed-loop system is highly sensitive to the choice of material parameters and the design of the state feedback amplifiers. This paper focuses on investigating the design of state feedback amplifiers to achieve a maximal exponential decay rate, which is essential for effectively suppressing oscillations in these beams. Through this design process, we explicitly determine the safe intervals of feedback amplifiers that ensure the theoretically found maximal decay rate, with the potential for even better rates. Our numerical results reaffirm the robustness of the decay rate within the chosen range of feedback amplifiers, while deviations from this range significantly impact the decay rate. To underscore the validity of our results, we present various numerical experiments.

Abstract:This work presents a variational based stochastic electromechanical coupling model for response analysis of a rotating cantilever beam with piezoelectric patches surface-mounted. The resonant shunt circuits are connected to the piezoelectric elements to reduce vibrations of some specific resonance frequencies. The deterministic equations of motion are derived by the generalised form of Hamilton’s principle for electromechanical systems and Rayleigh-Ritz modeling method based on the orthogonal polynomial bases, while the Penalty method is adopted to connect the beam and piezoelectric patches. The parameter uncertainties are taken into account in both the structural and electric components. The generalized polynomial chaos expansion (gPCE) is employed to represent propagation of parameter uncertainties and to estimate the statistical characteristics of the responses. Various results are presented and compared with the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) in order to validate the efficiency of the proposed formulation. Uncertainty analyses are carried out to ascertain the effects of probabilistic parameters on the responses. The results reveal that both the structure and piezoelectric uncertainty can affect the vibration behaviors, and consideration of parameter uncertainties is needed in dynamic designs in order to minimise the vibration response at resonance frequencies.

Abstract:This article studies the finite time blow-up of weak solutions to a structural acoustics model consisting of a semilinear wave equation defined on a bounded domain Ω ⊂ R 3 which is strongly coupled with a Berger plate equation acting on the elastic wall, namely, a flat portion of the boundary. The system is influenced by several competing forces, including boundary and interior source and damping terms. We stress that the power-type source term acting on the wave equation is allowed to have a supercritical exponent, in the sense that its associated Nemytskii operator is not locally Lipschitz from H 1 into L 2 . In this paper, we prove the blow-up results for weak solutions when the source terms are stronger than damping terms, by considering two scenarios of the initial data: (i) the initial total energy is negative; (ii) the initial total energy is positive but small, while the initial quadratic energy is sufficiently large. The most significant challenge in this work arises from the coupling of the wave and plate equations on the elastic wall.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with system of magnetic effected piezoelectric beams with interior time-varying delay and time-dependent weights, in which the beam is clamped at the two side points subject to a single distributed state feedback controller with a time-varying delay. By combining the semigroup theory with Kato's variable norm technique, we obtain the existence and uniqueness of solution. By imposing appropriate assumptions on the time-varying delay term and time-dependent weights, we introduce suitable perturbed Lyapunov functional to obtain exponential stability estimates.

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze the stability of a system involving a heat-conducting copper rod and a magnetizable piezoelectric beam, where fractional damping influences the longitudinal displacement of the beam's centerline. The coupled dynamics are governed by partial differential equations that incorporate heat diffusion in the copper rod and piezoelectric effects in the beam, including both mechanical and electrical interactions. Previous research has extensively studied piezoelectric systems and heat transfer dynamics separately, but the combined effect with fractional damping presents a novel challenge. Our investigation employs semi-group theory and multiplier methods to establish a polynomial stability result that is dependent on the order of the fractional derivative, offering insights into the interplay between heat transfer and piezoelectric behavior under fractional damping, which is critical for developing robust and efficient energy harvesting devices and structural control mechanisms.

Abstract:This paper presents a model reduction technique for a system of partial differential equations (PDEs) modeling heat transfer, mechanical vibrations, and charge distributions in a magnetizable piezoelectric beam within a transmission line framework. Leveraging recent results in designing static and dynamic feedback controllers, we reduce the system to a lower-dimensional model while preserving uniform exponential stability. The proposed method incorporates thermal effects and mitigates high-frequency eigenmode issues using Finite Differences with average operators. Importantly, the decay rate of the discrete model is identical to that of the original PDE model and is independent of the discretization parameters and , ensuring uniform exponential stability. Stability is achieved through a discrete Lyapunov function, which provides an explicit decay rate for selecting feedback gains and ensures robust performance across different scales. This framework effectively applies Finite Difference techniques to complex systems with coupled thermal and electromagnetic dynamics, ensuring stability without requiring direct spectral methods or observability results.

Abstract:In this paper, a Timoshenko nanobeam with the flexomagnetic and surface effects is proposed to study the static bending and free vibration, where shear deformation and rotary inertia of the section are both taken into account. A single governing equation along with the corresponding boundary conditions for piezomagnetic nanobeams is derived, and the effects of direct and converse flexomagnetic coupling on the magnetoelastic response are analyzed. The exact solution of the static bending of a cantilever flexomagnetic Timoshenko nanobeam subjected to a concentrated force at the free end is given. The frequency equation of free vibration of a simply supported nanobeam is obtained. The numerical results of the deflection and the natural frequency show that the flexomagnetic effect and the surface effects have a significant effect on the deformation. The surface elastic constant and positive surface residual stress play a role of hardening beams, decreasing the static bending and increasing the natural frequency. However, the negative surface residual stress has the opposite effect. Compared with the classical beam theory, the flexomagnetic effect significantly reduces the static bending deformation of the beam. This study provides guidance for the application of piezomagnetic nanobeams. It might be helpful for the design of microbeam-based sensors and some related measurement techniques.

Abstract:Considering the effects of nonlinear damping,the vibration stability of the parametrically excited piezoelectric beams is studied.The Hamilton principle is applied to derive the equation of motion and the method of multiple scales is used to solve the amplitude values of the stationary response.The numerical example is given to analyze the effects of the voltage,axial force and nonlinear damping on the stability of the steady solution.From the results that the difference ΔV between the applied outer voltage and the electric potential deference between the upper and lower surfaces of the piezoelectric layer mainly affects the range of the independent variable σ/ω and has slight effects on the stability of the steady solution;the smaller the axial force,the larger the stable regions of the steady solution;and the larger the constant and quadratic terms of the nonlinear damping,the larger the stable regions of the steady solution.
