Abstract:Recently there has been a large number of works on bilinear sums with Kloosterman sums and on sums of Kloosterman sums twisted by arithmetic functions. Motivated by these, we consider several related new questions about sums of Kloosterman sums parametrised by square-free and smooth integers.

Abstract:We prove new bounds on bilinear forms with Kloosterman sums, complementing and improving a series of results by e. Fouvry, E. Kowalski and Ph. Michel (2014), V. Blomer, e. Fouvry, E. Kowalski, Ph. Michel and D. Milicevic (2017), E. Kowalski, Ph. Michel and W. Sawin (2019, 2020) and I. E. Shparlinski (2019). These improvements rely on new estimates for Type II bilinear forms with incomplete Kloosterman sums. We also establish new estimates for bilinear forms with one variable from an arbitrary set by introducing techniques from additive combinatorics over prime fields. Some of these bounds have found a crucial application in the recent work of Wu (2020) on asymptotic formulas for the fourth moments of Dirichlet L-functions. As new applications, an estimate for higher moments of averages of Kloosterman sums and the distribution of divisor function in a family of arithmetic progressions are also given.
Bilinear Kloosterman sums in function fields and the distribution of irreducible polynomials

Abstract:Inspired by the work of Bourgain and Garaev (2013), we provide new bounds for certain weighted bilinear Kloosterman sums in polynomial rings over a finite field. As an application, we build upon and extend some results of Sawin and Shusterman (2022). These results include bounds for exponential sums weighted by the Möbius function and a level of distribution for irreducible polynomials beyond 1/2, with arbitrary composite modulus. Additionally, we can do better when averaging over the modulus, to give an analogue of the Bombieri-Vinogradov Theorem with a level of distribution even further beyond 1/2.

Abstract:We study Kloosterman sums on the orthogonal groups $SO_{3,3}$ and $SO_{4,2}$, associated to short elements of their respective Weyl groups. An explicit description for these sums is obtained in terms of multi-dimensional exponential sums. These are bounded by a combination of methods from algebraic geometry and $p$-adic analysis.

Abstract:In recent years, there has been a lot of progress in obtaining non-trivial bounds for bilinear forms of Kloosterman sums in $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$ for arbitrary integers $m$. These results have been motivated by a wide variety of applications, such as improved asymptotic formulas for moments of $L$-functions. However, there has been very little work done in this area in the setting of rational function fields over finite fields. We remedy this and provide a number of new non-trivial bounds for bilinear forms of Kloosterman and Gauss sums in this setting, based on new bounds on the number of solutions to certain modular congruences in $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$ .

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler’s sum of powers conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system $$\left\{{\matrix{{n = {a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}},} \hfill \cr {{a_1}{a_2} \ldots {a_{s - 1}}({a_1} + {a_2} + \ldots + {a_{s - 1}}) = {b^s}} \hfill \cr}} \right.$$ has positive integer or rational solutions n, b, aj, i = 1, 2, …, s − 1, s ⩾ 3. Using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no positive integer solution for s = 3, but there are infinitely many positive integers n such that it has a positive integer solution for s ⩾ 4. As a corollary, for s ⩾ 4 and any positive integer n, the above Diophantine system has a positive rational solution. Meanwhile, we give conditions such that it has infinitely many positive rational solutions for s ⩾ 4 and a fixed positive integer n.

Abstract:The well-known Lagrangeu0027s four-square theorem states that any integer $ninmathbb{N}={0,1,2,...}$ can be written as the sum of four squares. Recently, Z.-W. Sun investigated the representations of $n$ as $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ with certain linear restrictions involving the integer variables $x,y,z,w$. In this paper, via the theory of quadratic forms, we further study the representations $n=x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ (resp., $n=x^2+y^2+z^2+2w^2$) with certain linear restrictions involving primes. For example, we obtain the following results: (i) Each positive integer $nu003e1$ can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+2w^2$ ($x,y,z,winmathbb N$) with $x+y$ prime. (ii) Every positive integer can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+2w^2$ ($x,y,z,winmathbb N$) with $x+2y$ prime. (iii) Let $k$ be any positive integer, and let $dge 2^{k-1}$ be an odd integer with $4d^2+1$ prime. Abstract:We investigate the distribution of modular inverses modulo positive integers $c$ in a large interval. We provide upper and lower bounds for their box, ball and isotropic discrepancy, thereby exhibiting some deviations from random point sets. The analysis is based, among other things, on a new bound for a triple sum of Kloosterman sums.

Abstract:By elaborating a two-dimensional Selberg sieve with asymptotics and equidistributions of Kloosterman sums from ℓ-adic cohomology, as well as a Bombieri–Vinogradov type mean value theorem for Kloosterman sums in arithmetic progressions, it is proved that for any given primitive Hecke–Maass cusp form of trivial nebentypus, the eigenvalue of the n-th Hecke operator does not coincide with the Kloosterman sum Kl(1,n) for infinitely many squarefree n with at most 100 prime factors. This provides a partial negative answer to a problem of Katz on modular structures of Kloosterman sums.

Abstract:Sums of Kloosterman sums have deep connections with the theory of modular forms, and their estimation has many important consequences. Kuznetsov used his famous trace formula and got a power-saving estimate with respect to x with implied constants depending on m and n . Recently, in 2009, Sarnak and Tsimerman obtained a bound uniformly in x , m and n . The generalized Kloosterman sums are defined with multiplier systems and on congruence subgroups. Goldfeld and Sarnak bounded sums of them with main terms corresponding to exceptional eigenvalues of the hyperbolic Laplacian. Their error term is a power of x with implied constants depending on all the other factors. In this paper, for a wide class of half-integral weight multiplier systems, we get the same bound with the error term uniformly in x , m and n . Such uniform bounds have great applications. For the eta-multiplier, Ahlgren and Andersen obtained a uniform and power-saving bound with respect to m and n , which resulted in a convergent error estimate on the Rademacher exact formula of the partition function p ⁢ ( n ) . We also establish a Rademacher-type exact formula for the difference of partitions of rank modulo 3, which allows us to apply our power-saving estimate to the tail of the formula for a convergent error bound.

Abstract:The classical n -variable Kloosterman sums over finite fields are well understood by Deligne's theorem from complex point of view and by Sperber's theorem from p -adic point of view. In this paper, we study the complex and p -adic estimates of inverted n -variable Kloosterman sums, addressing a question of Katz (Finite Fields Appl 1(3):395–398, 1995). We shall give two complex estimates. The first one is elementary based on Gauss sums. The second estimate is deeper, depending on the cohomological results of Adolphson–Sperber, Denef–Loeser and Fu for twisted toric exponential sums. This deeper result assumes that the characteristic p does not divide Combining with Dwork's p -adic theory, we also determine the exact p -adic valuations for zeros and poles of the L-function associated to inverted n -variable Kloosterman sums in the case As we shall see, the inverted n -variable Kloosterman sum is more complicated than the classical n -variable Kloosterman sum in all aspects in the sense that our understanding is less complete, partly because the Hodge numbers are now mostly 2 instead of 1.

Abstract:International Journal of Number Theory, Ahead of Print. Sums of the singular series constants that appear in the Hardy–Littlewood [math]-tuples conjectures have long been studied in connection to the distribution of primes. We study constrained sums of singular series, where the sum is taken over sets whose elements are specified modulo [math] or weighted by smooth functions. We show that the value of the sum is governed by incidences modulo [math] of elements of the set in the case of arithmetic progressions and by pairings of the smooth functions in the case of weights. These sums shed light on sums of singular series in other formats.

Abstract:We investigate the asymptotic distribution of integrals of the $j$-function that are associated to ideal classes in a real quadratic field. To estimate the error term in our asymptotic formula, we prove a bound for sums of Kloosterman sums of half-integral weight that is uniform in every parameter. To establish this estimate we prove a variant of Kuznetsov's formula where the spectral data is restricted to half-integral weight forms in the Kohnen plus space, and we apply Young's hybrid subconvexity estimates for twisted modular $L$-functions.

Abstract:The literature on Dedekind sums is vast. In this expository paper we show that there is a common thread to many generalizations of Dedekind sums, namely through the study of lattice point enumeration of rational polytopes. In particular, there are some natural finite Fourier series which we call Fourier-Dedekind sums, and which form the building blocks of the number of partitions of an integer from a finite set of positive integers. This problem also goes by the name of the `coin exchange problem'. Dedekind sums have enjoyed a resurgence of interest recently, from such diverse fields as topology, number theory, and combinatorial geometry. The Fourier-Dedekind sums we study here include as special cases generalized Dedekind sums studied by Berndt, Carlitz, Grosswald, Knuth, Rademacher, and Zagier. Our interest in these sums stems from the appearance of Dedekind's and Zagier's sums in lattice point count formulas for polytopes. Using some simple generating functions, we show that generalized Dedekind sums are natural ingredients for such formulas. As immediate `geometric' corollaries to our formulas, we obtain and generalize reciprocity laws of Dedekind, Zagier, and Gessel. Finally, we prove a polynomial-time complexity result for Zagier's higher-dimensional Dedekind sums.

Abstract:This paper establishes power-saving bounds for Kloosterman sums associated with the long Weyl element for GL(n), as well as for another type of Weyl element of order 2. These bounds are obtained by establishing an explicit representation as exponential sums. As an application we go beyond Sarnak's density conjecture for the principal congruence subgroup of prime level. We also bound all Kloosterman sums for GL(4).
