Abstract:In this paper we find the first infinite family of hyperbolic 3-manifolds which admit tight contact structures but do not have any tight projectively Anosov flow. These manifolds are obtained as rational surgeries on the figure eight knot.

Abstract:We introduce a generalization of Goodman surgery to the category of projectively Anosov flows. This construction is performed along a knot that is simultaneously Legendrian and transverse for a supporting bi-contact structure. If the flow is Anosov there is a particular class of supporting bi-contact structures that induce Lorentzian metrics satisfying Barbot's criterion of hyperbolicity. Foulon and Hasselblatt construct new contact Anosov flows by surgery from a geodesic flow. We generalize their result showing that in any contact Anosov flow there is a family of Legendrian knots that can be used to produce new contact Anosov flows by surgery. Outside of the realm of Anosov flows we generate new examples of projectively Anosov flows on hyperbolic 3-manifolds. These flows contain an invariant submanifold of genus g>0. We also give some application to contact geometry: we interpret the bi-contact surgery in terms of classic contact-Legendrian surgery and admissible-inadmissible transverse surgery and we deduce some (hyper)tightness result for contact and transverse surgeries.

Abstract:The first half of this paper is concerned with the topology of the space $\AAA(M)$ of (not necessarily contact) Anosov vector fields on the unit tangent bundle $M$ of closed oriented hyperbolic surfaces $\Sigma$. We show that there are countably infinite connected components of $\AAA(M)$, each of which is not simply connected. In the second part, we study contact Anosov flows. We show in particular that the time changes of contact Anosov flows form a $C^1$-open subset of the space of the Anosov flows which leave a particular $C^\infty$ volume form invariant, if the ambiant manifold is a rational homology sphere.

Existence of arbitrary large numbers of non-$\mathbb R$-covered Anosov flows on hyperbolic $3$-manifolds

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to prove that, for every $n\in \mathbb N$, there exists a closed hyperbolic $3$-manifold $M$ which carries at least $n$ non-$\mathbb R$-covered Anosov flows, that are pairwise non-orbitally equivalent. Due to a recent result by Fenley, such Anosov flows are quasi-geodesic. Hence, we get the existence of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds carrying many pairwise non-orbitally equivalent quasi-geodesic Anosov flows. Based on the orbit space theory of Anosov flows developed by Fenley and Barbot, we completely studied the connected components of edge-adjacent lozenges, say, clusters in the orbit spaces of the Anosov flows in construction. The number of the lozenges of a cluster and a type of orientations on the clusters together are used as dynamical invariants to prove that the flows we construct are not orbitally equivalent. We believe that those dynamical invariants could be used in a much wider context.

Abstract: In the first part of this paper, we construct infinitely many hyperbolic closed 3-manifolds which admit no symplectic fillable contact structure. All these 3-manifolds are obtained by Dehn surgeries along L-space knots or L-space two-component links. In the second part of this paper, we show that Dehn surgeries along certain knots and links, including those considered in the first part, admit Stein fillable contact structures as long as the surgery coefficients are sufficiently large.

Abstract:In this article, we show that, at least for non-simply connected case, there exist an infinite family of nondiffeomorphic symplectic 4-manifolds with the same Seiberg-Witten invariants. Abstract:We consider the problem of realizing tight contact structures on closed orientable three-manifolds. By applying the theorems of Hofer et al., one may deduce tightness from dynamical properties of (Reeb) flows transverse to the contact structure. We detail how two classical constructions, Dehn surgery and branched covering, may be performed on dynamically-constrained links in such a way as to preserve a transverse tight contact structure.

Abstract:By extending a result of Kronheimer-Mrowka to the family setting, we prove a gluing formula for the family Seiberg-Witten invariant. This formula allows one to compute the invariant for a smooth family of 4-manifolds by cutting it open along a product family of 3-manifolds and studying the induced maps on monopole Floer (co)homology. When the cutting 3-manifold is an L-space, this formula implies a relation between the family Seiberg-Witten invariant, the Seiberg-Witten invariant of the fiber and the index of the family Dirac operator. We use this relation to calculate the Seiberg-Witten invariant of families of 4-manifolds that arise when resolving an ADE singularity using a hyperkähler family of complex structures near the singularity. Several applications are obtained. First, we establish a large family of simply-connected 4-manifolds M (e.g. all elliptic surfaces) such that π_1(Diff(M)) has a ℤ^∞-summand . For such M, the product S^2× M smoothly fibers over S^2 with fiber M in infinitely many distinct ways. Second, we show that on any closed symplectic 4-manifold that contains a smoothly embedded sphere of self-intersection -1 or -2, there is a loop of diffeomorphisms that is not homotopic to a loop of symplectormorphisms. This generalizes a previous result by Smirnov and confirms a conjecture by McDuff in dimension 4. It also provides many new examples of 4-manifolds whose space of symplectic forms has a nontrivial fundamental group or first homology group.

Abstract:A pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of a surface is a canonical representative of its mapping class. In this paper, we explain that a transitive pseudo-Anosov flow is similarly a canonical representative of its stable Hamiltonian class. It follows that there are finitely many pseudo-Anosov flows admitting positive Birkhoff sections on any given rational homology 3-sphere. This result has a purely topological consequence: any 3-manifold can be obtained in at most finitely many ways as $p/q$ surgery on a fibered hyperbolic knot in $S^3$ for a slope $p/q$ satisfying $q\geq 6$, $p\neq 0, \pm 1, \pm 2 \mod q$. The proof of the main theorem generalizes an argument of Barthelmé--Bowden--Mann.

Abstract:For each natural number n , we construct an example of a graph manifold supporting at least n different Anosov flows that are not orbit equivalent. Our construction is reminiscent of the Thurston-Handel construction [11]: we cut a geodesic flow on a surface of constant negative curvature into two pieces, modify the flow in each piece by pulling back to finite covers, and glue together compatible pairs of pullback flows along their boundary tori to get many distinct flows on the resulting graph manifold.

Abstract:We present a combinatorial approach to the existence of foliations and contact structures transverse to a given pseudo-Anosov flow. Let $\varphi$ be a transitive pseudo-Anosov flow on a closed oriented 3-manifold. Our main technical result is that every codimension 1 foliation transverse to $\varphi$ is carried by a single branched surface coming from a veering triangulation. Combined with recent breakthrough work of Massoni, this reduces the existence problem for transverse foliations to something like the feasibility of a system of inequalities (rather than equations!) over $Homeo_+([0,1])$. As a proof of concept, we show that for the hyperbolic, fibered, non-L-space knot $10_{145}$, the natural pseudo-Anosov flow on the slope $s$ Dehn surgery admits a transverse foliation for $s\in (-\infty, 3)$, but does not admit such a foliation for $s\in [5,\infty)$. The negative result is part of a more general Milnor--Wood type phenomenon which puts limitations on some well known methods for constructing taut foliations on Dehn surgeries.

Abstract:For a large class of 3-manifolds with taut foliations, we construct an action of $\pi_1(M)$ on $\mathbb{R}$ by orientation preserving homeomorphisms which captures the transverse geometry of the leaves. This action is complementary to Thurston's universal circle. Applications include the left-orderability of the fundamental groups of every non-trivial surgery on the figure eight knot. Our techniques also apply to at least 2598 manifolds representing 44.7% of the non-L-space rational homology spheres in the Hodgson-Weeks census of small closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds.

Abstract:This paper establishes a significant result concerning the absence of conjugate points in certain complete Riemannian manifolds. Specifically, we demonstrate that any complete non-compact manifold with curvature bounded below and an Anosov geodesic flow does not possess conjugate points. This resolves an open problem left by R. Mañé in [9] and subsequently highlighted by [7].

Abstract:We produce the first examples of closed, tight contact 3-manifolds which become overtwisted after performing admissible transverse surgeries. Along the way, we clarify the relationship between admissible transverse surgery and Legendrian surgery. We use this clarification to study a new invariant of transverse knots - namely, the range of slopes on which admissible transverse surgery preserves tightness - and to provide some new examples of knot types which are not uniformly thick. Our examples also illuminate several interesting new phenomena, including the existence of hyperbolic, universally tight contact 3-manifolds whose Heegaard Floer contact invariants vanish (and which are not weakly fillable); and the existence of open books with arbitrarily high fractional Dehn twist coefficients whose compatible contact structures are not deformations of co-orientable taut foliations.

Abstract:Abstract We study closed connected orientable 3-manifolds obtained by Dehn surgery along the oriented components of a link, introduced and considered by Motegi and Song (2005) and Ichihara et al. (2008). For such manifolds, we find a finite balanced group presentation of the fundamental group and describe exceptional surgeries. This allows us to construct an infinite family of tunnel number one strongly invertible hyperbolic knots with three parameters, which admit toroidal surgeries and Seifert fibered surgeries. Among the obtained results, we mention that for every integer $$n >5$$ n > 5 there are infinitely many hyperbolic knots in the 3–sphere, whose $$(n-2)$$ ( n - 2 ) and $$(n+1)$$ ( n + 1 ) -surgeries are toroidal, and $$(n-1)$$ ( n - 1 ) and n -surgeries are Seifert fibered.

Abstract:Every pseudo-Anosov flow $\phi$ in a closed $3$-manifold $M$ gives rise to an action of $\pi_1(M)$ on a circle $S^{1}_{\infty}(\phi)$ from infinity \cite{Fen12}, with a pair of invariant \emph{almost} laminations. From certain actions on $S^{1}$ with invariant almost laminations, we reconstruct flows and manifolds realizing these actions, including all orientable transitive pseudo-Anosov flows in closed $3$-manifolds. Our construction provides a geometry model for such flows and manifolds induced from $\mathcal{D} \times \mathcal{D}$, where $\mathcal{D}$ is the Poincaré disk with $\partial \mathcal{D}$ identified with $S^{1}_{\infty}(\phi)$. In addition, our result applies to Cannon conjecture under the assumption that certain group-equivariant sphere-filling Peano curve exists, which offers a description of orientable quasigeodesic pseudo-Anosov flows in hyperbolic $3$-manifolds in terms of group actions on $\partial \mathbb{H}^{3} \times \partial \mathbb{H}^{3} \times \partial \mathbb{H}^{3}$.
