Abstract:Using results relating taut foliations and pseudo-Anosov flows, we find cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds which are not the non-singular part of a pseudo-Anosov flow. In particular, we find the first examples of cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds not admitting veering triangulations, confirming a conjecture of S. Schleimer.

Abstract:A pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of a surface is a canonical representative of its mapping class. In this paper, we explain that a transitive pseudo-Anosov flow is similarly a canonical representative of its stable Hamiltonian class. It follows that there are finitely many pseudo-Anosov flows admitting positive Birkhoff sections on any given rational homology 3-sphere. This result has a purely topological consequence: any 3-manifold can be obtained in at most finitely many ways as $p/q$ surgery on a fibered hyperbolic knot in $S^3$ for a slope $p/q$ satisfying $q\geq 6$, $p\neq 0, \pm 1, \pm 2 \mod q$. The proof of the main theorem generalizes an argument of Barthelmé--Bowden--Mann.

Veering triangulations and transverse foliations

Abstract:We present a combinatorial approach to the existence of foliations and contact structures transverse to a given pseudo-Anosov flow. Let $\varphi$ be a transitive pseudo-Anosov flow on a closed oriented 3-manifold. Our main technical result is that every codimension 1 foliation transverse to $\varphi$ is carried by a single branched surface coming from a veering triangulation. Combined with recent breakthrough work of Massoni, this reduces the existence problem for transverse foliations to something like the feasibility of a system of inequalities (rather than equations!) over $Homeo_+([0,1])$. As a proof of concept, we show that for the hyperbolic, fibered, non-L-space knot $10_{145}$, the natural pseudo-Anosov flow on the slope $s$ Dehn surgery admits a transverse foliation for $s\in (-\infty, 3)$, but does not admit such a foliation for $s\in [5,\infty)$. The negative result is part of a more general Milnor--Wood type phenomenon which puts limitations on some well known methods for constructing taut foliations on Dehn surgeries.

Abstract:We prove that a formal power series associated to an ideally triangulated cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold (together with some further choices) is a topological invariant. This formal power series is conjectured to agree to all orders in perturbation theory with two important topological invariants of hyperbolic knots, namely the Kashaev invariant and the Andersen--Kashaev invariant (also known as the state-integral) of Teichmüller TQFT.

Abstract:We realize every closed flat 3-manifold as a cusp section of a complete, finite-volume hyperbolic 4-manifold whose symmetry group acts transitively on the set of cusps. Moreover, for every such 3-manifold, a dense subset of its flat metrics can be realized as cusp sections of a cusp-transitive 4-manifold. Finally, we prove that there are a lot of 4-manifolds with pairwise isometric cusps, for any given cusp type.

Abstract:Given a taut depth-one foliation $\mathcal{F}$ in a closed atoroidal 3-manifold $M$ transverse to a pseudo-Anosov flow $\phi$ without perfect fits, we show that the universal circle coming from leftmost sections $\mathfrak{S}_\mathrm{left}$ associated to $\mathcal{F}$, constructed by Thurston and Calegari-Dunfield, is isomorphic to the ideal boundary of the flow space associated to $\phi$ with natural structure maps. As a corollary, we use a theorem of Barthelmé-Frankel-Mann to show that there is at most one pseudo-Anosov flow without perfect fits transverse to $\mathcal{F}$ up to orbit equivalence.

Existence of arbitrary large numbers of non-$\mathbb R$-covered Anosov flows on hyperbolic $3$-manifolds

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to prove that, for every $n\in \mathbb N$, there exists a closed hyperbolic $3$-manifold $M$ which carries at least $n$ non-$\mathbb R$-covered Anosov flows, that are pairwise non-orbitally equivalent. Due to a recent result by Fenley, such Anosov flows are quasi-geodesic. Hence, we get the existence of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds carrying many pairwise non-orbitally equivalent quasi-geodesic Anosov flows. Based on the orbit space theory of Anosov flows developed by Fenley and Barbot, we completely studied the connected components of edge-adjacent lozenges, say, clusters in the orbit spaces of the Anosov flows in construction. The number of the lozenges of a cluster and a type of orientations on the clusters together are used as dynamical invariants to prove that the flows we construct are not orbitally equivalent. We believe that those dynamical invariants could be used in a much wider context.

Examples of Anosov flows with genus one Birkhoff sections

Abstract:We show that a transitive Anosov flow with orientable stable and unstable foliations that either (i) admits a Birkhoff section whose first return map is a Penner type pseudo-Anosov map, or (ii) is totally periodic admits a genus one Birkhoff section. This provides evidence for a conjecture of Fried and Ghys. The proof utilizes a result of the author on the horizontal Goodman surgery operation. To apply this result for showing (i), we establish correspondence between horizontal Goodman surgery on pseudo-Anosov flows and horizontal surgery on veering triangulations in the layered setting.

Abstract:Let $\varphi$ be a transitive pseudo-Anosov flow on an oriented, compact $3$-manifold $M$, possibly with toral boundary. We characterize the surfaces in $M$ that are (almost) transverse to $\phi$. When $\varphi$ has no perfect fits (e.g. $\varphi$ is the suspension flow of a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism), we prove that any Thurston-norm minimizing surface $S$ that pairs nonnegatively with the closed orbits of $\varphi$ is almost transverse to $\varphi$, up to isotopy. This answers a question of Cooper--Long--Reid. Our main tool is a correspondence between surfaces that are almost transverse to $\varphi$ and those that are relatively carried by any associated veering triangulation. The correspondence also allows us to investigate the uniqueness of almost transverse position, to extend Mosher's Transverse Surface Theorem to the case with boundary, and more generally to characterize when relative homology classes represent Birkhoff surfaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we adopt combinatorial Ricci flow to study the existence of hyperbolic structure on cusped 3-manifolds. The long-time existence and the uniqueness for the extended combinatorial Ricci flow are proven for general pseudo 3-manifolds. We prove that the extended combinatorial Ricci flow converges to a decorated hyperbolic polyhedral metric if and only if there exists a decorated hyperbolic polyhedral metric of zero Ricci curvature, and the flow converges exponentially fast in this case. For an ideally triangulated cusped 3-manifold admitting a complete hyperbolic metric, the flow provides an effective algorithm for finding the hyperbolic metric.
Cusp shape and fractional Dehn twists of fibred hyperbolic 3-manifolds

Abstract:Given a fibred hyperbolic 3-manifold with boundary, we coarsely relate the Euclidean geometry of its cusps to the classical fractional Dehn twist coefficient of its monodromy. This result fits into the broader programme of coarsely describing the geometry of a hyperbolic 3-manifold via combinatorial data. We are thus able to study the hyperbolic geometry of certain fibred 3-manifolds under Dehn filling. For example, we find coarse volume estimates for sufficiently twisted braid closures in terms of their braid words. We also prove that for any open book decomposition of a fixed manifold (that is not a lens space or solid torus) with fibre of fixed Euler characteristic the fractional Dehn twist coefficient in some boundary component is uniformly bounded. Finally, we obtain applications to contact topology. We give a geometric criterion on the binding of an open book decomposition for the corresponding contact structure in a hyperbolic 3-manifold to be tight.

Reconstruction of Anosov flows from infinity

Abstract:Every pseudo-Anosov flow $\phi$ in a closed $3$-manifold $M$ gives rise to an action of $\pi_1(M)$ on a circle $S^{1}_{\infty}(\phi)$ from infinity \cite{Fen12}, with a pair of invariant \emph{almost} laminations. From certain actions on $S^{1}$ with invariant almost laminations, we reconstruct flows and manifolds realizing these actions, including all orientable transitive pseudo-Anosov flows in closed $3$-manifolds. Our construction provides a geometry model for such flows and manifolds induced from $\mathcal{D} \times \mathcal{D}$, where $\mathcal{D}$ is the Poincaré disk with $\partial \mathcal{D}$ identified with $S^{1}_{\infty}(\phi)$. In addition, our result applies to Cannon conjecture under the assumption that certain group-equivariant sphere-filling Peano curve exists, which offers a description of orientable quasigeodesic pseudo-Anosov flows in hyperbolic $3$-manifolds in terms of group actions on $\partial \mathbb{H}^{3} \times \partial \mathbb{H}^{3} \times \partial \mathbb{H}^{3}$.

Abstract:We prove that a $C^2$-generic Riemannian metric on a closed surface has either an elliptic closed geodesic or an Anosov geodesic flow. As a consequence, we prove the $C^2$-stability conjecture for Riemannian geodesic flows of closed surfaces: a $C^2$-structurally stable Riemannian geodesic flow of a closed surface is Anosov. In order to prove these statements, we establish a general result that may be of independent interest and provides sufficient conditions for a Reeb flow of a closed 3-manifold to be Anosov.

Abstract:In this article, we study the topology and bifurcations of the moduli space M-3 of cubic Newton maps. It's a subspace of the moduli space of cubic rational maps, carrying the Riemann orbifold structure ((C)over-bar, (2, 3, infinity)).We prove two results: The boundary of the unique unbounded hyperbolic component is a Jordan arc and the boundaries of all other hyperbolic components are Jordan curves; The Head's angle map is surjective and monotone. The fibers of this map are characterized completely. The first result is a moduli space analogue of the first author's dynamical regularity theorem [37]. Abstract:We show that if a hyperbolic 3-manifold admits a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism then it also admits an Anosov flow. Moreover, we give a complete classification of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism in hyperbolic 3-manifolds as well as partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms in Seifert manifolds inducing pseudo-Anosov dynamics in the base. This classification is given in terms of the structure of their center (branching) foliations and the notion of collapsed Anosov flows.

Abstract:In a recent paper Garoufalidis and Reid constructed pairs of 1-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds which are isospectral but not isometric. In this paper we extend this work to the multi-cusped setting by constructing isospectral but not isometric hyperbolic 3-manifolds with arbitrarily many cusps. The manifolds we construct have the same Eisenstein series, the same infinite discrete spectrum and the same complex length spectrum. Our construction makes crucial use of Sunada's method and the Strong Approximation Theorem of Nori and Weisfeiler.

Cusp types of arithmetic hyperbolic manifolds

Abstract:We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for determining when a flat manifold can occur as a cusp cross-section within a given commensurability class of arithmetic hyperbolic manifolds of simplest type. This reduces the problem of identifying which commensurability classes of arithmetic hyperbolic manifolds can contain a specific flat manifold as a cusp cross-section to a question involving rational representations of the flat manifold's holonomy group. As applications, we prove that a flat manifold $M$ with a holonomy group of odd order appears as a cusp cross-section in every commensurability class of arithmetic hyperbolic manifolds if and only if $b_1(M)\geq 3$. We also provide examples of flat manifolds that arise as cusp cross-sections in a unique commensurability class of arithmetic hyperbolic manifolds and exhibit examples of pairs of flat manifolds that can never appear as cusp cross-sections within the same commensurability class.

Abstract:For a large class of 3-manifolds with taut foliations, we construct an action of $\pi_1(M)$ on $\mathbb{R}$ by orientation preserving homeomorphisms which captures the transverse geometry of the leaves. This action is complementary to Thurston's universal circle. Applications include the left-orderability of the fundamental groups of every non-trivial surgery on the figure eight knot. Our techniques also apply to at least 2598 manifolds representing 44.7% of the non-L-space rational homology spheres in the Hodgson-Weeks census of small closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds.

Abstract:Quasigeodesic behavior of flow lines is a very useful property in the study of Anosov flows. Not every Anosov flow in dimension three is quasigeodesic. In fact up to orbit equivalence, the only previously known examples of quasigeodesic Anosov flows were suspension flows. In this article, we prove that a new class of examples are quasigeodesic. These are the first examples of quasigeodesic Anosov flows on three manifolds that are neither Seifert, nor solvable, nor hyperbolic. In general, it is very hard to show that a given flow in quasigeodesic, and in this article we provide a new method to prove that an Anosov flow is quasigeodesic.
