Abstract:We determine a lower bound for the spectral radius of a graph in terms of the number of vertices and the diameter of the graph. For the specific case of graphs with diameter three we give a slightly better bound. We also construct families of graphs with small spectral radius, thus obtaining asymptotic results showing that the bound is of the right order. We also relate these results to the extremal degree/diameter problem.

Abstract:A graph is diameter two edge-critical if its diameter is two and the deletion of any edge increases the diameter. Murty and Simon conjectured that the number of edges in a diameter two edge-critical graph on $n$ vertices is at most $\lfloor \frac{n^{2}}{4} \rfloor$ and the extremal graph is the complete bipartite graph $K_{\lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor, \lceil \frac{n}{2} \rceil}$. In the series papers [8-10], the Murty-Simon Conjecture stated by Haynes et al is not the original conjecture, indeed, it is only for the diameter two edge-critical graphs of even order. Haynes et al proved the conjecture for the graphs whose complements have diameter three but only with even vertices. In this paper, we prove the Murty-Simon Conjecture for the graphs whose complements have diameter three, not only with even vertices but also odd ones.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the oriented diameter of power graphs of groups. We show that a $2$-edge connected power graph of a finite group has oriented diameter at most $4$. We prove that the power graph of the cyclic group of order $n$ has oriented diameter $2$ for all $n\neq 1,2,4,6$. For non-cyclic finite nilpotent groups, we show that the oriented diameter of corresponding power graphs is at least $3$. Moreover, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the oriented diameter of $2$-edge connected power graphs of finite non-cyclic nilpotent groups to be either $3$ or $4$. This, in turn, gives an algorithm for computing the oriented diameter of the power graph of a given nilpotent group that runs in time polynomial in the size of the group.

Abstract:We study graphs with spectral radius at most 322 and refine results by Woo and Neumaier [R. Woo, A. Neumaier, On graphs whose spectral radius is bounded by 322, Graphs Combinatorics 23 (2007) 713–726]. We study the limit points of the spectral radii of certain families of graphs, and apply the results to the problem of minimizing the spectral radius among the graphs with a given number of vertices and diameter. In particular, we consider the cases when the diameter is about half the number of vertices, and when the diameter is near the number of vertices. We prove certain instances of a conjecture posed by Van Dam and Kooij [E. R. Van Dam, R. E. Kooij, The minimal spectral radius of graphs with a given diameter, Linear Algebra Appl. 423 (2007) 408–419] and show that the conjecture is false for the other instances.

Abstract:For a simple graph $G$, the $2$-distance graph, $D_2(G)$, is a graph with the vertex set $V(G)$ and two vertices are adjacent if and only if their distance is $2$ in the graph $G$. In this paper, for graphs $G$ with diameter 2, we show that $diam(D_2(G))$ can be any integer $t\geqslant2$. For graphs $G$ with $diam(G)\geqslant3$, we prove that $\frac{1}{2}diam(G)\leqslant diam(D_2(G))$ and this inequality is sharp. Also, for $diam(G)=3$, we prove that $diam(D_2(G))\leqslant5$ and this inequality is sharp.

On the distance spectral radius bounds and improved bounds on the spectral radius of power graphs of some finite groups

Abstract:We consider the group G and construct its power graph, whose vertex set consists of the elements of G. Two distinct vertices (elements) are adjacent in the graph if and only if one element can be expressed as an integral power of the other. In the paper (Indagationes Mathematicae 29(2) (2018), pp 730 t0 737), Chattopadhyay et al. gave spectral radius bounds of the power graph of certain finite groups. In this article, we improved the bounds of the spectral radius of the power graphs of the above results. Furthermore, we provide bounds for the distance spectral radius of the power graph of the cyclic group Cn, the dihedral group D2n, and the dicyclic group Q4n. For some cases, we find the bounds are exact if and only if they pertain to a particular family of graphs.

Abstract:K\H onig's theorem says that the vertex cover number of every bipartite graph is at most its matching number (in fact they are equal since, trivially, the matching number is at most the vertex cover number). An equivalent formulation of K\H onig's theorem is that in every $2$-colouring of the edges of a graph $G$, the number of monochromatic components needed to cover the vertex set of $G$ is at most the independence number of $G$. We prove the following strengthening of K\H onig's theorem: In every $2$-colouring of the edges of a graph $G$, the number of monochromatic subgraphs of bounded diameter needed to cover the vertex set of $G$ is at most the independence number of $G$.

Abstract:We extend known results on chordal graphs and distance-hereditary graphs to much larger graph classes by using only a common metric property of these graphs. Specifically, a graph is called -metric ( ) if it satisfies the following -metric property for every vertices u , w , v and x : if a shortest path between u and w and a shortest path between x and v share a terminal edge vw , then . Roughly, gluing together any two shortest paths along a common terminal edge may not necessarily result in a shortest path but yields a "near-shortest" path with defect at most i . It is known that -metric graphs are exactly ptolemaic graphs, and that chordal graphs and distance-hereditary graphs are -metric for and , respectively. We show that an additive O ( i )-approximation of the radius, of the diameter, and in fact of all vertex eccentricities of an -metric graph can be computed in total linear time. Our strongest results are obtained for -metric graphs, for which we prove that a central vertex can be computed in subquadratic time, and even better in linear time for so-called -metric graphs (a superclass of chordal graphs and of plane triangulations with inner vertices of degree at least 7). The latter answers a question raised in Dragan (Inf Probl Lett 154:105873, 2020), 2020). Our algorithms follow from new results on centers and metric intervals of -metric graphs. In particular, we prove that the diameter of the center is at most (at most 3, if ). The latter partly answers a question raised in Yushmanov and Chepoi (Math Probl Cybernet 3:217–232, 1991).

On the diameter of intersection graphs of finite groups

Abstract:The intersection graph $\Delta_G$ of a finite group $G$ is a simple graph with vertices the non-trivial proper subgroups of $G$, and an edge between two vertices if their corresponding subgroups intersect non-trivially. These graphs were introduced by Csákány and Pollák in 1969. In this paper we answer two long-standing open questions posed by Csákány and Pollák concerning the diameter of intersection graphs. We prove some necessary conditions for a non-simple group to have an intersection graph of diameter 4. We also construct the first examples of non-simple groups and alternating groups whose intersection graphs have diameter 4.

Abstract:We consider the bipartite version of the {\it degree/diameter problem}, namely, given natural numbers $d\ge2$ and $D\ge2$, find the maximum number $\N^b(d,D)$ of vertices in a bipartite graph of maximum degree $d$ and diameter $D$. In this context, the bipartite Moore bound $\M^b(d,D)$ represents a general upper bound for $\N^b(d,D)$. Bipartite graphs of order $\M^b(d,D)$ are very rare, and determining $\N^b(d,D)$ still remains an open problem for most $(d,D)$ pairs. This paper is a follow-up to our earlier paper \cite{FPV12}, where a study on bipartite $(d,D,-4)$-graphs (that is, bipartite graphs of order $\M^b(d,D)-4$) was carried out. Here we first present some structural properties of bipartite $(d,3,-4)$-graphs, and later prove there are no bipartite $(7,3,-4)$-graphs. This result implies that the known bipartite $(7,3,-6)$-graph is optimal, and therefore $\N^b(7,3)=80$. Our approach also bears a proof of the uniqueness of the known bipartite $(5,3,-4)$-graph, and the non-existence of bipartite $(6,3,-4)$-graphs. In addition, we discover three new largest known bipartite (and also vertex-transitive) graphs of degree 11, diameter 3 and order 190, result which improves by 4 vertices the previous lower bound for $\N^b(11,3)$.

Abstract:The power graph of a group $G$, denoted as $P(G)$, constitutes a simple undirected graph characterized by its vertex set $G$. Specifically, vertices $a,b$ exhibit adjacency exclusively if $a$ belongs to the cyclic subgroup generated by $b$ or vice versa. The corresponding proper power graph of $G$ is obtained by taking $P(G)$ and removing a vertex corresponding to the identity element, which is denoted as $P^*(G)$. In the context of finite abelian groups, this article establishes the sufficient and necessary conditions for the proper power graph's connectedness. Moreover, a precise upper bound for the diameter of $P^*(G)$ in finite abelian groups is provided with sharpness. This article also explores the study of vertex connectivity, center, and planarity.

Abstract:We present a self-contained proof that the number of diameter pairs among n points in Euclidean 3-space is at most 2n-2. The proof avoids the ball polytopes used in the original proofs by Grunbaum, Heppes and Straszewicz. As a corollary we obtain that any three-dimensional diameter graph can be embedded in the projective plane.

Abstract:A graph is diameter-$k$-critical if its diameter equals $k$ and the deletion of any edge increases its diameter. The Murty-Simon Conjecture states that for any diameter-2-critical graph $G$ of order $n$, $e(G) \leq \lfloor \frac{n^2}{4}\rfloor$, with equality if and only if $G \cong K_{\lfloor \frac{n}{2}\rfloor,\lceil \frac{n}{2}\rceil}$. Füredi (JGT,1992) proved that this conjecture is true for sufficiently large $n$. Over two decades later, Loh and Ma (JCT-B, 2016) proved that $e(G) \leq \frac{n^2}{6}+o(n^2)$ for diameter-3-critical graphs $G$, and $e(G) \leq \frac{3n^2}{k}$ for diameter-$k$-critical graphs $G$ with $k \geq 4$. In this paper, we improve the bound for diameter-$k$-critical graphs to $ \frac{n^2}{2k}+o(n^2)$.

Abstract:The diameter of a directed graph is a fundamental parameter defined as the maximum distance realized among the pairs of vertices. As graphs of small diameter are of interest in many applications, we study the following problem: for a given directed graph and a positive integer $d$, what is the minimum number of arc flips (also known as arc reversal) required to obtain a graph with diameter at most $d$? It is a generalization of the well-known problem \textsc{Oriented Diameter}, first studied by Chvátal and Thomassen. Here we investigate variants of the above problem, considering the number of flips and the target diameter as parameters. We prove that most of the related questions of this type are hard. Special cases of graphs are also considered, as planar and cactus graphs, where we give polynomial time algorithms.
