Abstract:The enhanced power graph $\mathcal{P}_E(G)$ of a finite group $G$ is the simple undirected graph whose vertex set is $G$ and two distinct vertices $x, y$ are adjacent if $x, y \in \langle z \rangle$ for some $z \in G$. In this article, we give an affirmative answer of the question posed by Cameron [6] which states that: Is it true that the complement of the enhanced power graph $\bar{\mathcal{P}_E(G)}$ of a non-cyclic group $G$ has only one connected component apart from isolated vertices? We classify all finite groups $G$ such that the graph $\bar{\mathcal{P}_E(G)}$ is bipartite. We show that the graph $\bar{\mathcal{P}_E(G)}$ is weakly perfect. Further, we study the subgraph $\bar{\mathcal{P}_E(G^*)}$ of $\bar{\mathcal{P}_E(G)}$ induced by all the non-isolated vertices of $\bar{\mathcal{P}_E(G)}$. We classify all finite groups $G$ such that the graph is $\bar{\mathcal{P}_E(G^*)}$ is unicyclic and pentacyclic. We prove the non-existence of finite groups $G$ such that the graph $\bar{\mathcal{P}_E(G^*)}$ is bicyclic, tricyclic or tetracyclic. Finally, we characterize all finite groups $G$ such that the graph $\bar{\mathcal{P}_E(G^*)}$ is outerplanar, planar, projective-planar and toroidal, respectively.

Abstract:The power graph of a group omega is a graph, whose node set is omega and two distinct elements are adjacent if and only if one is an integral power of the other. A metric dimension of a graph Gamma, denoted by psi(Gamma) is the minimum cardinality of the resolving set of Gamma. In this context, we study distant properties and detour distant properties such as closure, interior, distance degree sequence and eccentric subgraphs of the power graphs of certain finite non-abelian groups. As a consequence, we figure out the metric dimension and resolving polynomial of power graphs for dihedral and generalized quaternion groups by using neighbourhood and twin sets.

Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group with |G| > 1. Let a (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) be k distinct elements of G and let b (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, b (k) be (not necessarily distinct) elements of G, where k is a positive integer smaller than the least prime divisor of |G|. We show that there is a permutation pi on {1, aEuro broken vertical bar,k} such that a (1) b (pi(1)), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) b (pi(k)) are distinct, provided that any other prime divisor of |G| (if there is any) is greater than k!. This in particular confirms the Dasgupta-Karolyi-Serra-Szegedy conjecture for abelian p-groups. We also pose a new conjecture involving determinants and characters, and show that its validity implies Snevily's conjecture for abelian groups of odd order. Our methods involve exterior algebras and characters.
On the distance spectral radius bounds and improved bounds on the spectral radius of power graphs of some finite groups

Abstract:We consider the group G and construct its power graph, whose vertex set consists of the elements of G. Two distinct vertices (elements) are adjacent in the graph if and only if one element can be expressed as an integral power of the other. In the paper (Indagationes Mathematicae 29(2) (2018), pp 730 t0 737), Chattopadhyay et al. gave spectral radius bounds of the power graph of certain finite groups. In this article, we improved the bounds of the spectral radius of the power graphs of the above results. Furthermore, we provide bounds for the distance spectral radius of the power graph of the cyclic group Cn, the dihedral group D2n, and the dicyclic group Q4n. For some cases, we find the bounds are exact if and only if they pertain to a particular family of graphs.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate certain graphs defined on groups, with a focus on infinite groups. The graphs discussed are the power graph, the enhanced power graph, and the commuting graph whose vertex set is a group $G$. The power graph is a graph in which two vertices are adjacent if one is some power of the other. In the enhanced power graph, an edge joins two vertices if they generate a cyclic subgroup of $G$. In the commuting graph, two vertices are adjacent if they commute in $G$. We prove a necessary and sufficient condition for any two of these graphs to be equal. This extends existing results for finite groups. In addition, we show that the power graph of the locally quaternion group is isomorphic to the commuting graph of the locally dihedral group. Lastly, we also answer a question posed by P. J. Cameron about the existence of groups $G_1$ and $G_2$ both of whom have power graph not equal to commuting graph but the power graph of $G_1$ and the commuting graph of $G_2$ are isomorphic.

Abstract:The power graph of a group $G$ is a graph with vertex set $G$, in which two vertices are adjacent if one is some power of the other. In the commuting graph, with $G$ as the vertex set, two vertices are joined by an edge if they commute in $G$. The enhanced power graph of a group $G$ is a graph with vertex set $G$ and an edge joining two vertices $x$ and $y$ if $\langle x,y\rangle$ is cyclic. In this paper, we answer a question posed by P. J. Cameron, namely, if there exist groups $G$ and $H$ such that the power graph of $G$ is isomorphic to the commuting graph of $H$. We show that the answer is yes if $G$ is the generalised quaternion group and $H$ is the dihedral group. We also show that the enhanced power graph of the dicyclic group is isomorphic to the commuting graph of the dihedral group.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group and construct a graph $\Delta(G)$ by taking $G\setminus\{1\}$ as the vertex set of $\Delta(G)$ and by drawing an edge between two vertices $x$ and $y$ if $\langle x,y\rangle$ is cyclic. Let $K(G)$ be the set consisting of the universal vertices of $\Delta(G)$ along the identity element. For a solvable group $G$, we present a necessary and sufficient conditon for $K(G)$ to be nontrivial. We also develop a connection between $\Delta(G)$ and $K(G)$ when $|G|$ is divisible by two distinct primes and the diameter of $\Delta(G)$ is $2$.

Abstract:The power graph of a group $G$, denoted as $P(G)$, constitutes a simple undirected graph characterized by its vertex set $G$. Specifically, vertices $a,b$ exhibit adjacency exclusively if $a$ belongs to the cyclic subgroup generated by $b$ or vice versa. The corresponding proper power graph of $G$ is obtained by taking $P(G)$ and removing a vertex corresponding to the identity element, which is denoted as $P^*(G)$. In the context of finite abelian groups, this article establishes the sufficient and necessary conditions for the proper power graph's connectedness. Moreover, a precise upper bound for the diameter of $P^*(G)$ in finite abelian groups is provided with sharpness. This article also explores the study of vertex connectivity, center, and planarity.

Abstract:The intersection graph $\Delta_G$ of a finite group $G$ is a simple graph with vertices the non-trivial proper subgroups of $G$, and an edge between two vertices if their corresponding subgroups intersect non-trivially. These graphs were introduced by Csákány and Pollák in 1969. In this paper we answer two long-standing open questions posed by Csákány and Pollák concerning the diameter of intersection graphs. We prove some necessary conditions for a non-simple group to have an intersection graph of diameter 4. We also construct the first examples of non-simple groups and alternating groups whose intersection graphs have diameter 4.

Abstract:In an earlier paper, the authors considered three types of graphs, and three equivalence relations, defined on a group, viz.\ the power graph, enhanced power graph, and commuting graph, and the relations of equality, conjugacy, and same order; for each choice of a graph type A and an equivalence relation B, there is a graph, the \emph{B superA graph} defined on $G$. The resulting nine graphs (of which eight were shown to be in general distinct) form a two-dimensional hierarchy. In the present paper, we consider these graphs further. We prove universality properties for the conjugacy supergraphs of various types, adding the nilpotent, solvable and enhanced power graphs to the commuting graphs considered in the rest of the paper, and also examine their relation to the invariable generating graph of the group. We also show that supergraphs can be expressed as graph compositions, in the sense of Schwenk, and use this representation to calculate their Wiener index. We illustrate these by computing Wiener index of equality supercommuting and conjugacy supercommuting graphs for dihedral and quaternion groups.

Abstract:The enhanced power graph of a group $G$ is the graph $\mathcal{G}_E(G)$ with vertex set $G$ and edge set $ \{(u,v): u, v \in \langle w \rangle,~\mbox{for some}~ w \in G\}$. In this paper, we compute the spectrum of the distance matrix of the enhanced power graph of non-abelian groups of order $pq$, dihedral groups, dicyclic groups, elementary abelian groups $\mathrm{El}(p^n)$ and the non-cyclic abelian groups $\mathrm{El}(p^n)\times\mathrm{El}(q^m)$ and $\mathrm{El}(p^n)\times \mathbb{Z}_m$, where $p$ and $q$ are distinct primes. For the non-cyclic abelian group $\mathrm{El}(p^n)\times \mathrm{El}(q^m)$, we also compute the spectrum of the adjacency matrix of its enhanced power graph and the spectrum of the adjacency and the distance matrix of its power graph.

Abstract:The enhanced power graph of a group is the simple graph whose vertex set is consisted of all elements of the group, and whose any pair of vertices are adjacent if they generate a cyclic subgroup. In this paper, we classify all finite groups whose enhanced power graphs are split and threshold. We also classify all finite nilpotent groups whose enhanced power graphs are chordal graphs and cographs. Finally, we give some families of non-nilpotent groups whose enhanced power graphs are chordal graphs and cographs. These results partly answer a question posed by Peter J. Cameron.

Abstract:Journal of Algebra and Its Applications, Ahead of Print. The enhanced power graph of a finite group [math] is the simple undirected graph whose vertex set is [math] and two distinct vertices [math] are adjacent if [math] for some [math]. An [math]-labeling of graph [math] is an integer labeling of [math] such that adjacent vertices have labels that differ by at least [math] and vertices distance [math] apart have labels that differ by at least [math]. The [math]-number of [math], denoted by [math], is the minimum range over all [math]-labelings. In this paper, we study the lambda number of the enhanced power graph [math] of the group [math]. This paper extends the corresponding results, obtained in [X. Ma, M. Feng and K. Wang, Lambda number of the power graph of a finite group, J. Algebraic Combin. 53(3) (2021) 743–754], of the lambda number of power graphs to enhanced power graphs. Moreover, for a nontrivial simple group [math] of order [math], we prove that [math] if and only if [math] is not a cyclic group of order [math]. Finally, we determine the lambda number of the enhanced power graphs of nilpotent groups.

Abstract:Let G be a finite group and let e be its identity element. The intersection power graph of G is the undirected graph with vertex set G , in which two distinct vertices x and y are adjacent if either 〈x〉∩〈y〉≠{e} or one of x and y is e . In this paper, we first compute the strong metric dimension of the intersection power graph of a cyclic group, a dihedral group, and a generalized quaternion group. We also characterize all finite groups G whose intersection power graph has strong metric dimension |G|−2 . Then, we give the sharp upper and lower bounds for the metric dimension of the intersection power graph of a finite group. As applications, we obtain the metric dimension of the intersection power graph of a cyclic group, a dihedral group, a generalized quaternion group, and a group of odd order.

On Oriented Diameter of Power Graphs

Abstract:In this paper, we study the oriented diameter of power graphs of groups. We show that a $2$-edge connected power graph of a finite group has oriented diameter at most $4$. We prove that the power graph of the cyclic group of order $n$ has oriented diameter $2$ for all $n\neq 1,2,4,6$. For non-cyclic finite nilpotent groups, we show that the oriented diameter of corresponding power graphs is at least $3$. Moreover, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the oriented diameter of $2$-edge connected power graphs of finite non-cyclic nilpotent groups to be either $3$ or $4$. This, in turn, gives an algorithm for computing the oriented diameter of the power graph of a given nilpotent group that runs in time polynomial in the size of the group.

Abstract:The power graph $\mathscr{P}(G)$ of a group $G$ is an undirected graph with all the elements of $G$ as vertices and where any two vertices $u$ and $v$ are adjacent if and only if $u=v^m $ or $v=u^m$, $ m \in$ $\mathbb{Z}$. For a simple graph $H$ with adjacency matrix $A(H)$ and degree diagonal matrix $D(H)$, the universal adjacency matrix is $U(H)= \alpha A(H)+\beta D(H)+ \gamma I +\eta J$, where $\alpha (\neq 0), \beta, \gamma, \eta \in \mathbb{R}$, $I$ is the identity matrix and $J$ is the all-ones matrix of suitable order. One can study many graph-associated matrices, such as adjacency, Laplacian, signless Laplacian, Seidel etc. in a unified manner through the universal adjacency matrix of a graph. Here we study universal adjacency eigenvalues and eigenvectors of power graphs, proper power graphs and their complements on the group $\mathbb{Z}_n$, dihedral group ${D}_n$, and the generalized quaternion group ${Q}_n$. Spectral results of no kind for the complement of power graph on any group were obtained before. We determine the full spectrum in some particular cases. Moreover, several existing results can be obtained as very specific cases of some results of the paper.
