On a family of divisible design digraphs

Abstract:For every odd prime power $q$, a family of pairwise nonisomorphic normal arc-transitive divisible design Cayley digraphs with isomorphic neighborhood designs over a Heisenberg group of order $q^3$ is constructed. It is proved that these digraphs are not distinguished by the Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm and have the Weisfeiler-Leman dimension $3$.

Abstract:Let p be a prime larger than 3 and congruent to 3 modulo 4, and let G be the non-abelian group of order p^3 and exponent p. We study the structure of a putative difference set with parameters (p^3,p^3-12,p^3-34) in G which is fixed by a certain element of order p in Aut(G). We then give a construction of skew Hadamard difference set in the group G for each prime p3 that is congruent to 3 modulo 4. This is the first infinite family of non-abelian skew Hadamard difference sets. Finally, we show that the symmetric designs derived from these new difference sets are not isomorphic to the Paley designs.

Abstract:A divisible design graph is a graph whose adjacency matrix is an incidence matrix of a (group) divisible design. Divisible design graphs were introduced in 2011 as a generalization of $(v,k,\lambda)$-graphs. Here we describe four new infinite families that can be obtained from the symplectic strongly regular graph $Sp(2e,q)$ ($q$ odd, $e\geq 2$) by modifying the set of edges. To achieve this we need two kinds of spreads in $PG(2e-1,q)$ with respect to the associated symplectic form: the symplectic spread consisting of totally isotropic subspaces and, when $e=2$, a special spread consisting of lines which are not totally isotropic. Existence of symplectic spreads is known, but the construction of a special spread for every odd prime power $q$ is a major result of this paper. We have included relevant back ground from finite geometry, and when $q=3,5$ and $7$ we worked out all possible special spreads.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a variant of dichromatic number on digraphs with prescribed sets of arcs. Let $D$ be a digraph and let $Z_1, Z_2$ be two sets of arcs in $D$. For a subdigraph $H$ of $D$, let $A(H)$ denote the set of all arcs of $H$. Let $\mu(D, Z_1, Z_2)$ be the minimum number of parts in a vertex partition $\mathcal{P}$ of $D$ such that for every $X\in \mathcal{P}$, the subdigraph of $D$ induced by $X$ contains no directed cycle $C$ with $|A(C)\cap Z_1|\neq |A(C)\cap Z_2|$. For $Z_1=A(D)$ and $Z_2=\emptyset$, $\mu(D, Z_1, Z_2)$ is equal to the dichromatic number of $D$. We prove that for every digraph $F$ and every tuple $(a_e,b_e,r_e, q_e)$ of integers with $q_e\ge 2$ and $\gcd(a_e,q_e)=\gcd(b_e,q_e)=1$ for each arc $e$ of $F$, there exists an integer $N$ such that if $\mu(D, Z_1, Z_2)\ge N$, then $D$ contains a subdigraph isomorphic to a subdivision of $F$ in which each arc $e$ of $F$ is subdivided into a directed path~$P_e$ such that~$a_e|A(P_e)\cap Z_1|+b_e|A(P_e)\cap Z_2|\equiv {r_e}\pmod {q_e}$. This generalizes a theorem of Steiner [Subdivisions with congruence constraints in digraphs of large chromatic number, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2208.06358" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2208.06358">arXiv:2208.06358</a>] which corresponds to the case when $(a_e, b_e, Z_1, Z_2)=(1, 1, A(D), \emptyset)$.

$q$-Analogs of divisible design graphs and Deza graphs

Abstract:Divisible design graphs were introduced in 2011 by Haemers, Kharaghani and Meulenberg. In this paper, we introduce the notion of $q$-analogs of divisible design graphs and show that all $q$-analogs of divisible design graphs come from spreads, and are actually $q$-analogs of strongly regular graphs. Deza graphs were introduced by Erickson, Fernando, Haemers and Hardy in 1999. In this paper, we introduce $q$-analogs of Deza graphs. Further, we determine possible parameters, give examples of $q$-analogs of Deza graphs and characterize all non-strongly regular $q$-analogs of Deza graphs with the smallest parameters.

Abstract:Aboulker et al. proved that a digraph with large enough dichromatic number contains any fixed digraph as a subdivision. The dichromatic number of a digraph is the smallest order of a partition of its vertex set into acyclic induced subdigraphs. A digraph is dicritical if the removal of any arc or vertex decreases its dichromatic number. In this paper we give sufficient conditions on a dicritical digraph of large order or large directed girth to contain a given digraph as a subdivision. In particular, we prove that (i) for every integers $k,\ell$, large enough dicritical digraphs with dichromatic number $k$ contain an orientation of a cycle with at least $\ell$ vertices; (ii) there are functions $f,g$ such that for every subdivision $F^*$ of a digraph $F$, digraphs with directed girth at least $f(F^*)$ and dichromatic number at least $g(F)$ contain a subdivision of $F^*$, and if $F$ is a tree, then $g(F)=|V(F)|$; (iii) there is a function $f$ such that for every subdivision $F^*$ of $TT_3$ (the transitive tournament on three vertices), digraphs with directed girth at least $f(F^*)$ and minimum out-degree at least $2$ contain $F^*$ as a subdivision.

Algebraic degrees of quasi-abelian semi-Cayley digraphs

Abstract:For a digraph $\Gamma$, if $F$ is the smallest field that contains all roots of the characteristic polynomial of the adjacency matrix of $\Gamma$, then $F$ is called the splitting field of $\Gamma$. The extension degree of $F$ over the field of rational numbers $\mathbb{Q}$ is said to be the algebraic degree of $\Gamma$. A digraph is a semi-Cayley digraph over a group $G$ if it admits $G$ as a semiregular automorphism group with two orbits of equal size. A semi-Cayley digraph $\mathrm{SC}(G,T_{11},T_{22},T_{12},T_{21})$ is called quasi-abelian if each of $T_{11},T_{22},T_{12}$ and $T_{21}$ is a union of some conjugacy classes of $G$. This paper determines the splitting field and the algebraic degree of a quasi-abelian semi-Cayley digraph over any finite group in terms of irreducible characters of groups. This work generalizes the previous works on algebraic degrees of Cayley graphs over abelian groups and any group having a subgroup of index 2, and semi-Cayley digraphs over abelian groups.

On isomorphisms of $m$-Cayley digraphs

Abstract:The isomorphism problem for digraphs is a fundamental problem in graph theory. This problem for Cayley digraphs has been extensively investigated over the last half a century. In this paper, we consider this problem for $m$-Cayley digraphs which are generalization of Cayley digraphs. Let $m$ be a positive integer. A digraph admitting a group $G$ of automorphisms acting semiregularly on the vertices with exactly $m$ orbits is called an $m$-Cayley digraph of $G$. In particular, $1$-Cayley digraph is just the Cayley digraph. We first characterize the normalizer of $G$ in the full automorphism group of an $m$-Cayley digraph of a finite group $G$. This generalizes a similar result for Cayley digraph achieved by Godsil in 1981. Then we use this to study the isomorphisms of $m$-Cayley digraphs. The CI-property of a Cayley digraph (CI stands for `Cayley isomorphism') and the DCI-groups (whose Cayley digraphs are all CI-digraphs) are two key topics in the study of isomorphisms of Cayley digraphs. We generalize these concepts into $m$-Cayley digraphs by defining $m$CI- and $m$PCI-digraphs, and correspondingly, $m$DCI- and $m$PDCI-groups. Analogues to Babai's criterion for CI-digraphs are given for $m$CI- and $m$PCI-digraphs, respectively. With these we then classify finite $m$DCI-groups for each $m\geq 2$, and finite $m$PDCI-groups for each $m\geq 4$. Similar results are also obtained for $m$-Cayley graphs. Note that 1DCI-groups are just DCI-groups, and the classification of finite DCI-groups is a long-standing open problem that has been worked on a lot.

Exact values and improved bounds on the clique number of cyclotomic graphs

Abstract:Let $q$ be an odd power of a prime $p$, and $S \subset \mathbb{F}_q^*$ such that $S=-S$ and $S/S \neq \mathbb{F}_q^*$. We show that the clique number of the Cayley graph $\operatorname{Cay}(\mathbb{F}_q^+,S)$ is at most $\sqrt{|S/S|}+\sqrt{q/p}$, improving the best-known $\sqrt{q}$ upper bound for many families of such graphs substantially. Such a new bound is strongest for cyclotomic graphs and in particular, it implies the first nontrivial upper bound on the clique number of all generalized Paley graphs of non-square order, extending the work of Hanson and Pertidis. Moreover, our new bound is asymptotically sharp for an infinite family of generalized Paley graphs, and we further discover the first nontrivial family among them for which the clique number can be exactly determined. We also obtain a new lower bound on the number of directions determined by a large Cartesian product in the affine Galois plane $AG(2,q)$, which is sharp for infinite families.

Abstract:In [Distrance-regular Cayley graphs on dihedral groups, J. Combin. Theory Ser B 97 (2007) 14--33], Miklavi\v{c} and Poto\v{c}nik proposed the problem of characterizing distance-regular Cayley graphs, which can be viewed as an extension of the problem of identifying strongly regular Cayley graphs, or equivalently, regular partial difference sets. In this paper, all distance-regular Cayley graphs over $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}\oplus\mathbb{Z}_{p}$ with $p$ being an odd prime are determined. It is shown that every such graph is isomorphic to a complete graph, a complete multipartite graph, or the line graph of a transversal design $TD(r,p)$ with $2\leq r\leq p-1$.

Abstract:Tang and Ding [IEEE IT 67 (2021) 244-254] studied the class of BCH codes $mathcal {C}_{(q,q+1,4,1)}$ and their dual codes with $q=2^{m}$ and established that the codewords of the minimum (or the second minimum) weight in these codes support 4-designs or 3-designs. Motivated by this, we further investigate the codewords of the next adjacent weight in such codes and discover more infinite classes of $t$ -designs with $t=3,4$ . In particular, we prove that codewords of weight 7 in $mathcal {C}_{(q,q+1,4,1)}$ support 4-designs for odd $m geqslant 5$ and they support 3-designs for even $m geqslant 4$ , which provide infinite classes of simple $t$ -designs with new parameters. Another significant class of $t$ -designs we produce in this paper has complementary designs with parameters 4-$(2^{2s+1}+ 1,5,5)$ ; these designs have the smallest index among all the known simple 4-$(q+1,5,lambda)$ designs derived from codes for prime powers $q$ ; and they are further proved to be isomorphic to the 4-designs admitting the projective general linear group PGL$(2,2^{2s+1})$ as the automorphism group constructed by Alltop in 1969.

On distance-regular Cayley graphs over abelian groups of rank $2$

Abstract:The problem of constructing or characterizing strongly regular Cayley graphs (or equivalently, regular partial difference sets) has garnered significant attention over the past half-century. In [European J. Combin. 24 (2023) 777--784], Miklavič and Potočnik expanded upon this field, achieving a complete characterization of distance-regular Cayley graphs over cyclic groups by employing the method of Schur rings. In [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 97 (2007) 14--33], they formally proposed the problem of characterizing distance-regular Cayley graphs for any given class of groups. In this context, abelian groups are of particular importance, as a considerable number of distance-regular graphs with classical parameters are precisely Cayley graphs over abelian groups. In this paper, we address the Miklavič-Potočnik problem for abelian groups of rank $2$. More specifically, we identify all distance-regular Cayley graphs over the group $\mathbb{Z}_n \oplus \mathbb{Z}_p$, where $p$ is an odd prime. Our proof utilizes novel tools such as polynomial addition sets, Desarguesian affine planes, and the duality of Schur rings over abelian groups.

Abstract:Interplay between coding theory and combinatorial $t$-designs has been a hot topic for many years for combinatorialists and coding theorists. Some infinite families of cyclic codes supporting infinite families of $3$-designs have been constructed in the past 50 years. However, no infinite family of negacyclic codes supporting an infinite family of $3$-designs has been reported in the literature. This is the main motivation of this paper. Let $q=p^m$, where $p$ is an odd prime and $m \geq 2$ is an integer. The objective of this paper is to present an infinite family of cyclic codes over $\gf(q)$ supporting an infinite family of $3$-designs and two infinite families of negacyclic codes over $\gf(q^2)$ supporting two infinite families of $3$-designs. The parameters and the weight distributions of these codes are determined. The subfield subcodes of these negacyclic codes over $\gf(q)$ are studied. Three infinite families of almost MDS codes are also presented. A constacyclic code over GF($4$) supporting a $4$-design and six open problems are also presented in this paper.

Finite $s$-geodesic-transitive digraphs

Abstract:This paper initiates the investigation of the family of $(G,s)$-geodesic-transitive digraphs with $s\geq 2$. We first give a global analysis by providing a reduction result. Let $\Gamma$ be such a digraph and let $N$ be a normal subgroup of $G$ maximal with respect to having at least $3$ orbits. Then the quotient digraph $\Gamma_N$ is $(G/N,s')$-geodesic-transitive where $s'=\min\{s,\diam(\Gamma_N)\}$, $G/N$ is either quasiprimitive or bi-quasiprimitive on $V(\Gamma_N)$, and $\Gamma_N$ is either directed or an undirected complete graph. Moreover, it is further shown that if $\Gamma $ is not $(G,2)$-arc-transitive, then $G/N$ is quasiprimitive on $V(\Gamma_N)$. On the other hand, we also consider the case that the normal subgroup $N$ of $G$ has one orbit on the vertex set. We show that if $N$ is regular on $V(\Gamma)$, then $\Gamma$ is a circuit, and particularly each $(G,s)$-geodesic-transitive normal Cayley digraph with $s\geq 2$, is a circuit. Finally, we investigate $(G,2)$-geodesic-transitive digraphs with either valency at most 5 or diameter at most 2. Let $\Gamma$ be a $(G,2)$-geodesic-transitive digraph. It is proved that: if $\Gamma$ has valency at most $5$, then $\Gamma$ is $(G,2)$-arc-transitive; if $\Gamma$ has diameter $2$, then $\Gamma$ is a balanced incomplete block design with the Hadamard parameters.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime $e$ be a positive integer, $q = p^e$, and let $\mathbb{F}_q$ denote the finite field of $q$ elements. Let $m,n$, $1\le m,n\le q-1$, be integers. The monomial digraph $D= D(q;m,n)$ is defined as follows: the vertex set of $D$ is $\mathbb{F}_q^2$, and $((x_1,x_2),(y_1,y_2))$ is an arc in $D$ if $ x_2 + y_2 = x_1^m y_1^n $. In this note we study the question of isomorphism of monomial digraphs $D(q;m_1,n_1)$ and $D(q;m_2,n_2)$. Several necessary conditions and several sufficient conditions for the isomorphism are found. We conjecture that one simple sufficient condition is also a necessary one.

A family of $2$-groups and an associated family of semisymmetric, locally $2$-arc-transitive graphs

Abstract:A mixed dihedral group is a group $H$ with two disjoint subgroups $X$ and $Y$, each elementary abelian of order $2^n$, such that $H$ is generated by $X\cup Y$, and $H/H'\cong X\times Y$. In this paper, for each $n\geq 2$, we construct a mixed dihedral $2$-group $H$ of nilpotency class $3$ and order $2^a$ where $a=(n^3+n^2+4n)/2$, and a corresponding graph $\Sigma$, which is the clique graph of a Cayley graph of $H$. We prove that $\Sigma$ is semisymmetric, that is, ${\rm Aut}(\Sigma)$ acts transitively on the edges, but intransitively on the vertices, of $\Sigma$. These graphs are the first known semisymmetric graphs constructed from groups that are not $2$-generated (indeed $H$ requires $2n$ generators). Additionally, we prove that $\Sigma$ is locally $2$-arc-transitive, and is a normal cover of the `basic' locally $2$-arc-transitive graph ${\rm K}_{2^n,2^n}$. As such, the construction of this family of graphs contributes to the investigation of normal covers of prime-power order of basic locally $2$-arc-transitive graphs -- the `local' analogue of a question posed by C.~H.~Li.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime, and $D_{2p}=\langle \tau,\sigma\mid \tau^p=\sigma^2=e,\sigma\tau\sigma=\tau^{-1}\rangle$ the dihedral group of order $2p$. In this paper, we provide the number of (connected) Cayley (di-)graphs on $D_{2p}$ up to isomorphism by using the Pólya enumeration theorem. In the process, we also enumerate (connected) Cayley digraphs on $D_{2p}$ of out-degree $k$ up to isomorphism for each $k$.
