Abstract:A divisible design graph is a graph whose adjacency matrix is an incidence matrix of a (group) divisible design. Divisible design graphs were introduced in 2011 as a generalization of $(v,k,\lambda)$-graphs. Here we describe four new infinite families that can be obtained from the symplectic strongly regular graph $Sp(2e,q)$ ($q$ odd, $e\geq 2$) by modifying the set of edges. To achieve this we need two kinds of spreads in $PG(2e-1,q)$ with respect to the associated symplectic form: the symplectic spread consisting of totally isotropic subspaces and, when $e=2$, a special spread consisting of lines which are not totally isotropic. Existence of symplectic spreads is known, but the construction of a special spread for every odd prime power $q$ is a major result of this paper. We have included relevant back ground from finite geometry, and when $q=3,5$ and $7$ we worked out all possible special spreads.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to construct new divisible design graphs. Specifically, the authors describe four new infinite families of divisible design graphs by modifying the edge set of the symplectic graph Sp(2e,q). To achieve this goal, they utilize two types of spreads in projective geometry:
1. **Symplectic Spread**: Consists of completely isotropic subspaces.
2. **Special Spread**: When \(e = 2\), consists of lines that are not completely isotropic.
These spreads are of great significance in projective geometry, especially in finite geometry. One of the main achievements of the paper is to prove that for every odd prime power \(q\), there exists a special spread. In addition, the authors also study in detail all possible special spreads when \(q = 3, 5, 7\).
### Main Contributions
1. **Construction of New Divisible Design Graphs**:
- New divisible design graphs are constructed through the equitable partitions of the symplectic graph Sp(4,q) and its complement.
- Four new infinite families of divisible design graphs are proposed. The smallest instances of these graphs contain 40 vertices and are thus not in the known small - graph databases.
2. **Existence of Special Spreads**:
- It is proved that for each odd prime power \(q\), there exists at least one special spread.
- The specific numbers of special spreads when \(q = 3, 5, 7\) are calculated, and the non - equivalence of these spreads is verified.
3. **Analysis of Graph Properties**:
- The parameters of these newly constructed divisible design graphs, including the number of vertices, degrees, and the number of common neighbors, are analyzed in detail.
- The non - isomorphism of these graphs is proved, that is, the graphs generated by different special spreads are not the same.
### Formula Summary
- **Parameters of Divisible Design Graphs**:
- For \( \Gamma_{q,S}\):
\[
((q^2 + 1)(q + 1), q^3 + q + 1, q^3 - q^2 + q + 1, q^3 - q^2 + 2q, q^2 + 1, q + 1)
\]
- For \( \Gamma'_{q,S}\):
\[
\left((q^2 + 1)(q + 1), \frac{q^3 + q^2 + 3q + 1}{2}, \frac{q^3 - q^2 + 3q + 1}{2}, q^2 + q, 2, \frac{(q^2 + 1)(q + 1)}{2}\right)
\]
- For \( \Gamma_{q,e,R}\):
\[
\left(\frac{q^{2e} - 1}{q - 1}, \frac{q^e q^{e - 1}}{q - 1}, \frac{q^e q^{e - 2} - 1}{q - 1}, \frac{(q^e - 1)^2}{q - 1}, q^{e + 1}, \frac{q^e - 1}{q - 1}\right)
\]
- For \( \Gamma'_{q,e,R}\):
\[
\left(v=\frac{q^{2e} - 1}{q - 1}, \frac{v}{2}-q^{e - 1}, \frac{v}{2}-q^{2e - 2}-q^{e - 1}, q^{2e - 2}-q^{e - 1}, 2, \frac{v}{2}\right)
\]
### Conclusion
Through these constructions and analyses, the paper not only enriches the theory of divisible design graphs but also provides new tools and methods for future research. In particular, the existence and properties of special spreads are helpful for understanding.
