Abstract:I show that it is consistent relative to the consistency of a Mahlo cardinal that Martin's axiom holds at $\omega_2$, but the weak Kurepa Hypothesis fails. This answers a question posed by Honzik, Lambie-Hanson and Stejskalová. The consistency result is obtained by constructing a model where the weak Kurepa Hypothesis fails in any c.c.c. forcing extension.

Abstract:Let m be the least cardinal k such that MA(k) fails. The only known model for "m is singular" was constructed by Kunen. In Kunen's model cof(m)=omega_1. It is unknown whether "omega_1 < cof(m) < m" is consistent. The purpose of this paper is to present a proof of Kunen's result and to identify the difficulties of generalizing this result to an arbitrary uncountable cofinality.

Abstract:We introduce a variant of Martin's axiom, called the grounded Martin's axiom, or , which asserts that the universe is a c.c.c. forcing extension in which Martin's axiom holds for posets in the ground model. This principle already implies several of the combinatorial consequences of . The new axiom is shown to be consistent with the failure of and a singular continuum. We prove that is preserved in a strong way when adding a Cohen real and that adding a random real to a model of preserves (even though it destroys itself). We also consider the analogous variant of the proper forcing axiom.

Abstract:We introduce an iteration of forcing notions satisfying the countable chain condition with minimal damage to a strong coloring. Applying this method, we prove that Martin's axiom is strictly stronger than its restriction to forcing notions satisfying the countable chain condition in all finite powers. Our method shows also the finer distinction, that Martin's axiom is strictly stronger than its restriction to forcing notions whose squares satisfy the countable chain condition.

Abstract:We study methods to obtain the consistency of forcing axioms, and particularly higher forcing axioms. We first force over a model with a supercompact cardinal $\theta>\kappa$ to get the consistency of the forcing axiom for $\kappa$-strongly proper forcing notions which are also $\kappa$-lattice, and then eliminate the need for large cardinals. The proof goes through a natural reflection property for $\kappa$-strongly proper forcings. We also produce a model of this forcing axiom with $2^\kappa$ arbitrarily large, and prove the inconsistency of certain natural strengthenings of the axiom.

Abstract:We prove forcing axiom equivalents of two families of weakenings of the axiom of choice: a trichotomy principle for cardinals isolated by Lévy, ${\rm H\hskip0.05pt}_\kappa$, and ${\rm DC}_\kappa$, the principle of dependent choices generalized to cardinals $\kappa$, for regular cardinals $\kappa$. Using these equivalents we obtain new forcing axiom formulations of the axiom of choice.

Abstract:The Model Hypothesis (abbreviated $\mathsf{MH}$) and $\Delta$ are set-theoretic axioms introduced by J. Roitman in her work on the box product problem. Answering some questions of Roitman and Williams on these two principles, we show (1) $\mathsf{MH}$ implies the existence of $P$-points in $\omega^*$ and is therefore not a theorem of $\mathsf{ZFC}$; (2) $\mathsf{MH}$ also fails in the side-by-side Sacks models; (3) as $\Delta$ holds in these models, this implies $\Delta$ is strictly stronger than $\mathsf{MH}$; (4) furthermore, $\Delta$ holds in a large class of forcing extensions in which it was not previously known to hold.

Abstract:Addressing a question of Paul Larson we prove the following statement. If Chang's conjecture fails, Martin's axiom holds and the continuum is greater than $\aleph_2$, there are no weakly Laver ideals over $\aleph_1$. We also prove that under Baumgartner's axiom there are no Laver ideals over $\aleph_2$.

Abstract:Justin Moore's weak club-guessing principle $\mho$ admits various possible generalizations to the second uncountable cardinal. One of them was shown to hold in ZFC by Shelah. A stronger one was shown to follow from several consequences of the continuum hypothesis by Inamdar and Rinot. Here we prove that the stronger one may consistently fail. Specifically, starting with a supercompact cardinal and an inaccessible cardinal above it, we devise a notion of forcing consisting of finite working parts and finitely many two types of models as side conditions, to violate this analog of $\mho$ at the second uncountable cardinal.

Abstract:We prove that if (M,\mathcal{X}) and (M,\mathcal{Y}) are countable models of the theory \mathrm{WKL}^{*}_{0} such that \mathrm{I}\Sigma_{1}(A) fails for some A \in \mathcal{X}\cap \mathcal{Y} , then (M,\mathcal{X}) and (M,\mathcal{Y}) are isomorphic. As a consequence, the analytic hierarchy collapses to \Delta^{1}_{1} provably in \mathrm{WKL}^{*}_{0} + \neg \mathrm{I}\Sigma^{0}_{1} , and \mathrm{WKL} is the strongest \Pi^{1}_{2} statement that is \Pi^{1}_{1} -conservative over \mathrm{RCA}^{*}_{0} + \neg \mathrm{I}\Sigma^{0}_{1} . Applying our results to the \Delta^{0}_{n} -definable sets in models of \mathrm{RCA}^{*}_{0} + \mathrm{B}\Sigma^{0}_{n} + \neg \mathrm{I}\Sigma^{0}_{n} that also satisfy an appropriate relativization of weak König’s lemma, we prove that for each n \ge 1 , the set of \Pi^{1}_{2} sentences that are \Pi^{1}_{1} -conservative over \mathrm{RCA}^{*}_{0} + \mathrm{B}\Sigma^{0}_{n} + \neg \mathrm{I}\Sigma^{0}_{n} is computably enumerable. In contrast, we prove that the set of \Pi^{1}_{2} sentences that are \Pi^{1}_{1} -conservative over \mathrm{RCA}^{*}_{0} + \mathrm{B}\Sigma^{0}_{n} is \Pi_{2} -complete. This answers a question of Towsner. We also show that \mathrm{RCA}_{0} + \mathrm{RT}^{2}_{2} is \Pi^{1}_{1} -conservative over \mathrm{B}\Sigma^{0}_{2} if and only if it is conservative over \mathrm{B}\Sigma^{0}_{2} with respect to \forall \Pi^{0}_{5} sentences.

Abstract:We investigate the generalized tree properties and guessing model properties introduced by Weiß and Viale, as well as natural weakenings thereof, studying the relationships among these properties and between these properties and other prominent combinatorial principles. We introduce a weakening of Viale and Weiß's Guessing Model Property, which we call the Almost Guessing Property, and prove that it provides an alternate formulation of the slender tree property in the same way that the Guessing Model Property provides and alternate formulation of the ineffable slender tree property. We show that instances of the Almost Guessing Property have sufficient strength to imply, for example, failures of square or the nonexistence of weak Kurepa trees. We show that these instances of the Almsot Guessing Property hold in the Mitchell model starting from a strongly compact cardinal and prove a number of other consistency results showing that certain implications between the principles under consideration are in general not reversible. In the process, we provide a new answer to a question of Viale by constructing a model in which, for all regular $\theta \geq \omega_2$, there are stationarily many $\omega_2$-guessing models $M \in \mathscr{P}_{\omega_2} H(\theta)$ that are not $\omega_1$-guessing models.

Abstract:Hamkins and Löwe asked whether there can be a model $N$ of set theory with the property that $N\equiv N[g]$ whenever $g$ is a generic collapse of a cardinal of $N$ onto $\omega$. We give equiconsistency results for two weaker versions of this property. We also include a proof of Woodin's result that the consistency of the full Hamkins-Löwe property follows from that of a Woodin cardinal with an inaccessible above.

Abstract:We produce a model where every supercompact cardinal is $C^{(1)}$-supercompact with inaccessible targets. This is a significant improvement of the main identity-crises configuration obtained in \cite{HMP} and provides a definitive answer to a question of Bagaria \cite[p.19]{Bag}. This configuration is a consequence of a new axiom we introduce -- called $\mathcal{A}$ -- which is showed to be compatible with Woodin's $I_0$ cardinals. We also answer a question of V. Gitman and G. Goldberg on the relationship between supercompactness and cardinal-preserving extendibility. As an incidental result, we prove a theorem suggesting that supercompactness is the strongest large-cardinal notion preserved by Radin forcing.

Abstract:In recent work, the second author extended combinatorial principles due to Jech and Magidor that characterize certain large cardinal properties so that they can also hold true for small cardinals. For inaccessible cardinals, these modifications have no effect, and the resulting principles still give the same characterization of large cardinals. We prove that the proper forcing axiom PFA implies these principles hold for ω2. Using this, we argue to show that any of the known methods for forcing models of PFA from a large cardinal assumption requires a strongly compact cardinal. If one forces PFA using a proper forcing, then we get the optimal result that a supercompact cardinal is necessary.

Abstract:I explore two separate topics: the concept of jointness for set-theoretic guessing principles, and the notion of grounded forcing axioms. A family of guessing sequences is said to be joint if all of its members can guess any given family of targets independently and simultaneously. I primarily investigate jointness in the case of various kinds of Laver diamonds. In the case of measurable cardinals I show that, while the assertions that there are joint families of Laver diamonds of a given length get strictly stronger with increasing length, they are all equiconsistent. This is contrasted with the case of partially strong cardinals, where we can derive additional consistency strength, and ordinary diamond sequences, where large joint families exist whenever even one diamond sequence does. Grounded forcing axioms modify the usual forcing axioms by restricting the posets considered to a suitable ground model. I focus on the grounded Martin's axiom which states that Martin's axioms holds for posets coming from some ccc ground model. I examine the new axiom's effects on the cardinal characteristics of the continuum and show that it is quite a bit more robust under mild forcing than Martin's axiom itself.
