Abstract:We produce a model where every supercompact cardinal is $C^{(1)}$-supercompact with inaccessible targets. This is a significant improvement of the main identity-crises configuration obtained in \cite{HMP} and provides a definitive answer to a question of Bagaria \cite[p.19]{Bag}. This configuration is a consequence of a new axiom we introduce -- called $\mathcal{A}$ -- which is showed to be compatible with Woodin's $I_0$ cardinals. We also answer a question of V. Gitman and G. Goldberg on the relationship between supercompactness and cardinal-preserving extendibility. As an incidental result, we prove a theorem suggesting that supercompactness is the strongest large-cardinal notion preserved by Radin forcing.

Abstract:Given a cardinal $\kappa$ that is $\lambda$-supercompact for some regular cardinal $\lambda\geq\kappa$ and assuming $\GCH$, we show that one can force the continuum function to agree with any function $F:[\kappa,\lambda]\cap\REG\to\CARD$ satisfying $\forall\alpha,\beta\in\dom(F)$ $\alpha<\cf(F(\alpha))$ and $\alpha<\beta$ $\implies$ $F(\alpha)\leq F(\beta)$, while preserving the $\lambda$-supercompactness of $\kappa$ from a hypothesis that is of the weakest possible consistency strength, namely, from the hypothesis that there is an elementary embedding $j:V\to M$ with critical point $\kappa$ such that $M^\lambda\subseteq M$ and $j(\kappa)>F(\lambda)$. Our argument extends Woodin's technique of surgically modifying a generic filter to a new case: Woodin's key lemma applies when modifications are done on the range of $j$, whereas our argument uses a new key lemma to handle modifications done off of the range of $j$ on the ghost coordinates. This work answers a question of Friedman and Honzik [FH2012]. We also discuss several related open questions.

Abstract:In a classical paper by Ben-David and Magidor, a model of set theory was exhibited in which $\aleph_{\omega+1}$ carries a uniform ultrafilter that is $\theta$-indecomposable for every uncountable cardinal $\theta<\aleph_\omega$. In this paper, we give a global version of this result, as follows: Assuming the consistency of a supercompact cardinal, we produce a model of set theory in which for every singular cardinal $\lambda$, there exists a uniform ultrafilter on $\lambda^+$ that is $\theta$-indecomposable for every cardinal $\theta$ such that $cf(\lambda)<\theta<\lambda$. In our model, many instances of compactness for chromatic numbers hold, from which we infer that Hajnal's gap-1 counterexample to Hedetniemi's conjecture is best possible on the grounds of ZFC.

Abstract:Abstract We continue the study of the Galvin property from Benhamou, Garti, and Shelah (2023, Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society 151, 1301–1309) and Benhamou (2023, Saturation properties in canonical inner models , submitted). In particular, we deepen the connection between certain diamond-like principles and non-Galvin ultrafilters. We also show that any Dodd sound non p -point ultrafilter is non-Galvin. We use these ideas to formulate what appears to be the optimal large cardinal hypothesis implying the existence of a non-Galvin ultrafilter, improving on a result from Benhamou and Dobrinen (2023, Journal of Symbolic Logic , 1–34). Finally, we use a strengthening of the Ultrapower Axiom to prove that in all the known canonical inner models, a $\kappa $ -complete ultrafilter has the Galvin property if and only if it is an iterated sum of p -points.

Large cardinals, structural reflection, and the HOD Conjecture

Abstract:We introduce exacting cardinals and a strengthening of these, ultraexacting cardinals. These are natural large cardinals defined equivalently as weak forms of rank-Berkeley cardinals, strong forms of Jónsson cardinals, or in terms of principles of structural reflection. However, they challenge commonly held intuition on strong axioms of infinity. We prove that ultraexacting cardinals are consistent with Zermelo-Fraenkel Set Theory with the Axiom of Choice (ZFC) relative to the existence of an I0 embedding. However, the existence of an ultraexacting cardinal below a measurable cardinal implies the consistency of ZFC with a proper class of I0 embeddings, thus challenging the linear-incremental picture of the large cardinal hierarchy. We show that the existence of an exacting cardinal implies that V is not equal to HOD (Gödel's universe of Hereditarily Ordinal Definable sets), showing that these cardinals surpass the current hierarchy of large cardinals consistent with ZFC. We prove that the consistency of ZFC with an exacting cardinal above an extendible cardinal refutes Woodin's HOD Conjecture and Ultimate-L Conjecture. Finally, we establish the consistency of ZFC with the existence of an exacting cardinal above an extendible cardinal from the consistency of ZF with certain large cardinals beyond choice.

Abstract:In recent work, the second author extended combinatorial principles due to Jech and Magidor that characterize certain large cardinal properties so that they can also hold true for small cardinals. For inaccessible cardinals, these modifications have no effect, and the resulting principles still give the same characterization of large cardinals. We prove that the proper forcing axiom PFA implies these principles hold for ω2. Using this, we argue to show that any of the known methods for forcing models of PFA from a large cardinal assumption requires a strongly compact cardinal. If one forces PFA using a proper forcing, then we get the optimal result that a supercompact cardinal is necessary.

Many of these cardinals are defined by modifying the definition of a high-jump cardinal. I organize these cardinals in terms of consistency strength and implicational strength. I also analyze the superstrong cardinals, which are weaker than supercompact cardinals but are related to high-jump cardinals. Among the results, I highlight the following.Vopěnka cardinals are the same as Woodin-for-supercompactness cardinals.There are no excessively hypercompact cardinals.Furthermore, I prove some results relating high-jump cardinals to forcing, as well as analyzing Laver functions for super-high-jump cardinals.

Abstract:Justin Moore's weak club-guessing principle $\mho$ admits various possible generalizations to the second uncountable cardinal. One of them was shown to hold in ZFC by Shelah. A stronger one was shown to follow from several consequences of the continuum hypothesis by Inamdar and Rinot. Here we prove that the stronger one may consistently fail. Specifically, starting with a supercompact cardinal and an inaccessible cardinal above it, we devise a notion of forcing consisting of finite working parts and finitely many two types of models as side conditions, to violate this analog of $\mho$ at the second uncountable cardinal.

Abstract:The Recurrence Axiom for a class $\mathcal{P}$ of \pos\ and a set $A$ of parameters is an axiom scheme in the language of ZFC asserting that if a statement with parameters from $A$ is forced by a poset in $\mathcal{P}$, then there is a ground containing the parameters and satisfying the statement. The tightly super-$C^{(\infty)}$-$\mathcal{P}$-Laver generic hyperhuge continuum implies the Recurrence Axiom for $\mathcal{P}$ and $\mathcal{H}(2^{\aleph_0})$. The consistency strength of this assumption can be decided thanks to our main theorems asserting that the minimal ground (bedrock) exists under a tightly $\mathcal{P}$-generic hyperhuge cardinal $\kappa$, and that $\kappa$ in the bedrock is genuinely hyperhuge, or even super $C^{(\infty)}$ hyperhuge if $\kappa$ is a tightly super-$C^{(\infty)}$-$\mathcal{P}$-Laver generic hyperhuge definable cardinal. The Laver Generic Maximum (LGM), one of the strongest combinations of axioms in our context, integrates practically all known set-theoretic principles and axioms in itself, either as its consequences or as theorems holding in (many) grounds of the universe. For example, double plus version of Martin's Maximum is a consequence of LGM while Cichoń's Maximum is a phenomenon in many grounds of the universe under LGM.

A Kunen-Like Model with a Critical Failure of the Continuum Hypothesis

Abstract:We construct a model of the form $L[A,U]$ that exhibits the simplest structural behavior of $\sigma$-complete ultrafilters in a model of set theory with a single measurable cardinal $\kappa$ , yet satisfies $2^\kappa = \kappa^{++}$. This result establishes a limitation on the extent to which structural properties of ultrafilters can determine the cardinal arithmetic at large cardinals, and answers a question posed by Goldberg concerning the failure of the Continuum Hypothesis at a measurable cardinal in a model of the Ultrapower Axiom. The construction introduces several methods in extensions of embeddings theory and fine-structure-based forcing, designed to control the behavior of non-normal ultrafilters in generic extensions.

Abstract:We show that the Proper Forcing Axiom for forcing notions of size $\aleph_1$ is consistent with the continuum being arbitrarily large. In fact, assuming $GCH$ holds and $\kappa\geq\omega_2$ is a regular cardinal, we prove that there is a proper and $\aleph_2$-c.c.\ forcing $\mathbb{P}$ giving rise to a model of this forcing axiom together with $2^{\aleph_0}=\kappa$ and which, in addition, satisfies all statements of the form $\mathcal{H}(\aleph_2)\models \forall x\exists y\varphi(x, y)$, where $\varphi(x, y)$ is a restricted formula with the property that for every $a\in \mathcal{H}(\aleph_2)$ and every inner model $M$ of $CH$ with $a\in M$ there is, in $M$, a suitably nice proper poset adding some $b$ such that $\varphi(a, b)$. In particular, $\mathbb{P}$ forces Moore's Measuring principle, Baumgartner's Axiom for $\aleph_1$-dense sets of reals, Todorčević's Open Colouring Axiom for sets of size $\aleph_1$, and Todorěvić's P-ideal Dichotomy for $\aleph_1$-generated ideals on $\omega_1$, among other statements. In particular, all these statements are simultaneously compatible with a large continuum.

Abstract:It is known that the large cardinal strength of the Axiom of Determinacy when enhanced with the hypothesis that all sets of reals are universally Baire is much stronger than the Axiom of Determinacy itself. Sargsyan conjectured it to be as strong as the existence of a cardinal that is both a limit of Woodin cardinals and a limit of strong cardinals. Larson, Sargsyan and Wilson used a generalization of Woodin's derived model construction to show that this conjectured result would be optimal. In this paper we introduce a new translation procedure for hybrid mice extending work of Steel, Zhu and Sargsyan and apply it to prove Sargsyan's conjecture.

Abstract:A set of reals is universally Baire if all of its continuous preimages in topological spaces have the Baire property. is a type of generic absoluteness condition introduced by Woodin that asserts in strong terms that the theory of the universally Baire sets cannot be changed by forcing. The ( ) is a determinacy axiom isolated by Woodin. It asserts that the largest Suslin cardinal is inaccessible for ordinal definable bijections. Let be the statement that in all (set) generic extensions there is a model of whose Suslin, co-Suslin sets are the universally Baire sets. We show that over some mild large cardinal theory, is equiconsistent with . In fact, we isolate an exact large cardinal theory that is equiconsistent with both (see Definition 2.7). As a consequence, we obtain that is weaker than the theory ' there is a Woodin cardinal which is a limit of Woodin cardinals'. A variation of , called , is also shown to be equiconsistent with over the same large cardinal theory. The result is proven via Woodin's technique and is essentially the ultimate equiconsistency that can be proven via the current interpretation of as explained in the paper.

Abstract:We investigate pseudopowers of singular cardinals, and show that deduce some consequences for cardinal arithmetic. For example, we show that in {\sf ZFC} that $$\cov(\mu,\mu,\theta,\sigma)=\cov(\mu,\mu,(\cf\mu)^+,\sigma)+\cov(\mu,\mu,\theta,\sigma^+)$$ whenever $\aleph_1\leq\sigma=\cf(\sigma)<\cf(\mu)<\theta<\mu$, and use recent work of Gitik to show that both summands in the equation are required.

On the optimality of the HOD dichotomy

Abstract:In the first part of the manuscript, we establish several consistency results concerning Woodin's $\HOD$ hypothesis and large cardinals around the level of extendibility. First, we prove that the first extendible cardinal can be the first strongly compact in HOD. We extend a former result of Woodin by showing that under the HOD hypothesis the first extendible cardinal is $C^{(1)}$-supercompact in HOD. We also show that the first cardinal-correct extendible may not be extendible, thus answering a question by Gitman and Osinski \cite[\S9]{GitOsi}. In the second part of the manuscript, we discuss the extent to which weak covering can fail below the first supercompact cardinal $\delta$ in a context where the HOD hypothesis holds. Answering a question of Cummings et al. \cite{CumFriGol}, we show that under the $\HOD$ hypothesis there are many singulars $\kappa<\delta$ where $\cf^{\HOD}(\kappa)=\cf(\kappa)$ and $\kappa^{+\HOD}=\kappa^{+}.$ In contrast, we also show that the $\HOD$ hypothesis is consistent with $\delta$ carrying a club of $\HOD$-regulars cardinals $\kappa$ such that $\kappa^{+\HOD}<\kappa^{+}$. Finally, we close the manuscript with a discussion about the $\HOD$ hypothesis and $\omega$-strong measurability.

Abstract:We study the Magidor iteration of Prikry forcings below a measurable limit of measurables κ . We first characterize all the normal measures κ carries in the generic extension, building on and extending the main result of [1]. Then, for every such normal measure, we prove that the restriction of its ultrapower, from the generic extension to the ground model, is an iterated ultrapower of V by normal measures. This is done without core model theoretic assumptions; GCH ≤ κ in the ground model suffices.
