Abstract:The recent experimental observation of quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effects in the rhombohedrally stacked pentalayer graphene has motivated theoretical discussions on the possibility of quantum anomalous Hall crystal (QAHC), a topological version of Wigner crystal. Conventionally Wigner crystal was assumed to have a period $a_{\text{crystal}}=1/\sqrt{n}$ locked to the density $n$. In this work we propose new types of topological Wigner crystals labeled as QAHC-$z$ with period $a_{\text{crystal}}=\sqrt{z/n}$. In rhombohedrally stacked graphene aligned with hexagon boron nitride~(hBN), we find parameter regimes where QAHC-2 and QAHC-3 have lower energy than the conventional QAHC-1 at total filling $\nu=1$ per moiré unit cell. These states all have total Chern number $C_\mathrm{tot}=1$ and are consistent with the QAH effect observed in the experiments. The larger period QAHC states have better kinetic energy due to the unique Mexican-hat dispersion of the pentalayer graphene, which can compensate for the loss in the interaction energy. Unlike QAHC-1, QAHC-2 and QAHC-3 also break the moiré translation symmetry and are sharply distinct from a moiré band insulator. We also briefly discuss the competition between integer QAHC and fractional QAHC states at filling $\nu=2/3$. Besides, we notice the importance of the moiré potential. A larger moiré potential can greatly change the phase diagram and even favors a QAHC-1 ansatz with $C=2$ Chern band.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore whether there are new types of Quantum Anomalous Hall Crystals (QAHC) in multilayer graphene and to study the stability of these new types of QAHC under specific conditions. Specifically, the paper discusses whether there are new types of QAHC (marked as QAHC - z, where z > 1) with a period larger than that of the traditional Wigner crystal when the rhombus - stacked five - layer graphene is aligned with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), and whether these states can have lower energy at a total filling factor ν = 1. In addition, the paper also discusses the competitive relationship between the integer QAHC and the Fractional Quantum Anomalous Hall (FQAH) state at a fractional filling ν = 2/3. ### Main research contents 1. **Proposing new types of QAHC**: - Through Hartree - Fock calculations, the paper proposes new types of QAHC, marked as QAHC - 2 and QAHC - 3. The crystal periods of these types are twice and three times that of the traditional QAHC - 1, respectively. - The paper finds that in some parameter spaces (such as different combinations of the twist angle and the displacement field δD), QAHC - 2 and QAHC - 3 can have lower energy than QAHC - 1. 2. **Energy comparison and phase diagrams**: - By calculating the total energy of different QAHC states, the paper draws phase diagrams, showing which QAHC states are more stable under different moiré potential intensities. - The results show that as the moiré potential increases, QAHC - 1 becomes more favorable, and even a state with a total Chern number of 2 can be achieved in some regions. 3. **Competition between integer and fractional fillings**: - The paper also studies the energy competition between integer QAHC (such as QAHC - 1 and QAHC - 2) and the FQAH state at a fractional filling ν = 2/3. - By calculating the energy of the FQAH state through the Exact Diagonalization (ED) method and comparing it with the energy of the QAHC state calculated by Hartree - Fock, the results show that the FQAH state usually has lower energy, especially when the interaction strength and the moiré potential are large. ### Main conclusions - **New types of QAHC**: The paper successfully proves that QAHC - 2 and QAHC - 3 with larger periods exist in five - layer graphene, and these states can be more stable than the traditional QAHC - 1 under certain conditions. - **Energy competition**: At a fractional filling ν = 2/3, the FQAH state usually has lower energy, but the integer QAHC (especially QAHC - 2) is still competitive in some parameter ranges. - **The role of moiré potential**: The moiré potential plays a crucial role in determining the stability of different QAHC states. A stronger moiré potential can change the phase diagram and even be favorable for states with a higher Chern number. Through these studies, the paper provides a new perspective for understanding the quantum anomalous Hall effect in multilayer graphene and theoretical guidance for future experimental research.
