Abstract:We estimate the growth rates for the set of reciprocal conjugacy classes in the Hecke groups. In other words, this estimates the growth of the reciprocal geodesics in terms of word lengths on the hyperbolic orbifolds associated with the Hecke groups.

Abstract:An element $g$ in a group $G$ is called \emph{reciprocal} if there exists $h \in G$ such that $g^{-1}=hgh^{-1}$. The reciprocal elements are also known as `real elements' or `reversible elements' in the literature. We classify the reciprocal elements and parametrize the reciprocal classes in the Hecke groups $\Gamma_p$ for $p\geq 3$. This generalizes a result by Sarnak for reciprocal elements in the modular group.

Abstract:We establish the asymptotic expansion of certain integrals of [Formula: see text] classes on moduli spaces of curves [Formula: see text], when either the [Formula: see text] or [Formula: see text] goes to infinity. Our main tools are cut-join type recursion formulae from the Witten–Kontsevich theorem, as well as asymptotics of solutions to the first Painlevé equation. We also raise a conjecture on large genus asymptotics for [Formula: see text]-point functions of [Formula: see text] classes and partially verify the positivity of coefficients in generalized Mirzakhani’s formula of higher Weil–Petersson volumes.

Abstract:Abstract We study the growth of the number of conjugacy classes of infinite dihedral subgroups of lattices in $\operatorname{PSL}_{2}{\mathbb{R}}$, generalizing the earlier work of Sarnak [ 9] and Bourgain–Kontorovich [ 4] on the growth of the number of reciprocal geodesics on the modular surface. We also prove that reciprocal geodesics are equidistributed in the unit tangent bundle.

Abstract:Inspired by results of Eskin and Mirzakhani (J Mod Dyn 5(1):71–105, 2011) counting closed geodesics of length in the moduli space of a fixed closed surface, we consider a similar question in the setting. The Eskin-Mirzakhani result can be equivalently stated in terms of counting the number of conjugacy classes (within the mapping class group) of pseudo-Anosovs whose dilatations have natural logarithm . Let denote the number of -conjugacy classes of fully irreducibles satisfying that the natural logarithm of their dilatation is . We prove for that as , the number has double exponential (in L ) lower and upper bounds. These bounds reveal behavior not present in the surface setting or in classical hyperbolic dynamical systems.

Abstract:We prove that non-elementary hyperbolic groups grow exponentially more quickly than their infinite index quasiconvex subgroups. The proof uses the classical tools of automatic structures and Perron–Frobenius theory. We also extend the main result to relatively hyperbolic groups and cubulated groups. These extensions use the notion of growth tightness and the work of Dahmani, Guirardel and Osin on rotating families.

Abstract:We study the conjugacy class growth function in finitely generated virtually abelian groups. That is, the number of elements in the ball of radius $n$ in the Cayley graph which intersect a fixed conjugacy class. In the class of virtually abelian groups, we prove that this function is always asymptotically equivalent to a polynomial. Furthermore, we show that in any affine Coxeter group, the degree of polynomial growth of a conjugacy class is equivalent to the reflection length of any element of that class.

The rates of growth in an acylindrically hyperbolic group

Abstract:Let $G$ be an acylindrically hyperbolic group on a $\delta$-hyperbolic space $X$. Assume there exists $M$ such that for any finite generating set $S$ of $G$, the set $S^M$ contains a hyperbolic element on $X$. Suppose that $G$ is equationally Noetherian. Then we show the set of the growth rates of $G$ is well-ordered (Theorem 1.1). The conclusion was known for hyperbolic groups, and this is a generalization. Our result applies to all lattices in simple Lie groups of rank-1 (Theorem 1.3), and more generally, some family of relatively hyperbolic groups (Theorem 1.2). It also applies to the fundamental group, of exponential growth, of a closed orientable $3$-manifold except for the case that the manifold has Sol-geometry (Theorem 5.7).

Abstract:A classical result of Jørgensen and Thurston shows that the set of volumes of finite volume complete hyperbolic $3$-manifolds is a well-ordered subset of the real numbers of order type~$\omega^\omega$; moreover, each volume can only be attained by finitely many isometry types of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds. Fujiwara and Sela established a group-theoretic companion of this result: If $\Gamma$ is a non-elementary hyperbolic group, then the set of exponential growth rates of~$\Gamma$ is well-ordered, the order type is at least~$\omega^\omega$, and each growth rate can only be attained by finitely many finite generating sets (up to automorphisms). In this talk, we outline this work of Fujiwara and Sela and discuss related results.

Abstract:In this paper we describe conjugacy geodesic representatives in any dihedral Artin group $G(m)$, $m\geq 3$, which we then use to calculate asymptotics for the conjugacy growth of $G(m)$, and show that the conjugacy growth series of $G(m)$ with respect to the `free product' generating set $\{x, y\}$ is transcendental. We prove two additional properties of $G(m)$ that connect to conjugacy, namely that the permutation conjugator length function is constant, and that the falsification by fellow traveler property (FFTP) holds with respect to $\{x, y\}$. These imply that the language of all conjugacy geodesics in $G(m)$ with respect to $\{x, y\}$ is regular.

Abstract:We consider harmonic functions of polynomial growth of some order d on Cayley graphs of discrete groups of polynomial volume growth of order D w.r.t. the word metric and prove the optimal estimate for the dimension of the space of such harmonic functions. More precisely, the dimension of this space of harmonic functions is at most of order d^D-1 . As in the already known Riemannian case, this estimate is polynomial in the growth degree. More generally, our techniques also apply to graphs roughly isometric to Cayley graphs of groups of polynomial volume growth.

Abstract:We compute (exact and asymptotic) formulas for the growth rate of the number of indecomposable summands in the tensor powers of representations of finite groups, over a field of arbitrary characteristic. In characteristic zero, we obtain in addition a general exact formula for the growth rate and give a complete solution to the growth problems in terms of the character table. We also provide code used to compute our formulas.

Abstract:We show that the $n$-point, genus-$g$ correlation functions of topological recursion on any regular spectral curve with simple ramifications grow at most like $(2g - 2 + n)!$ as $g \rightarrow \infty$, which is the expected growth rate. This provides, in particular, an upper bound for many curve counting problems in large genus and serves as a preliminary step for a resurgence analysis.

Abstract:This paper studies the locally uniform exponential growth and product set growth for a finitely generated group $G$ acting properly on a finite product of hyperbolic spaces. Under the assumption of coarsely dense orbits or shadowing property on factors, we prove that any finitely generated non-virtually abelian subgroup has uniform exponential growth. These assumptions are fulfilled in many hierarchically hyperbolic groups, including mapping class groups, specially cubulated groups and BMW groups. Moreover, if $G$ acts weakly acylindrically on each factor, we show that, with two exceptional classes of subgroups, $G$ has uniform product set growth. As corollaries, this gives a complete classification of subgroups with product set growth for any group acting discretely on a simply connected manifold with pinched negative curvature, for groups acting acylindrically on trees, and for 3-manifold groups.

Intermediate geodesic growth in virtually nilpotent groups

Abstract:We give a criterion on pairs $(G,S)$ - where $G$ is a virtually $s$-step nilpotent group and $S$ is a finite generating set - saying whether the geodesic growth is exponential or strictly sub-exponential. Whenever $s=1,2$, this goes further and we prove the geodesic growth is either exponential or polynomial. For $s\ge 3$ however, intermediate growth is possible. We provide an example of virtually $3$-step nilpotent group for which $\gamma_{\mathrm{geod}}(n) \asymp \exp\!\big(n^{3/5}\cdot \log(n)\big)$. This is the first known example of group with intermediate geodesic growth. Along the way, we prove results on the geometry of virtually nilpotent groups, including asymptotics with error terms for their volume growth.

Abstract:We derive a generating series for the number of free subgroups of finite index in $\Delta^+ = \mathbb{Z}_p*\mathbb{Z}_q$ by using a connection between free subgroups of $\Delta^+$ and certain hypermaps (also known as ribbon graphs or "fat" graphs), and show that this generating series is transcendental. We provide non-linear recurrence relations for the above numbers based on differential equations that are part of the Riccati hierarchy. We also study the generating series for conjugacy classes of free subgroups of finite index in $\Delta^+$, which correspond to isomorphism classes of hypermaps. Asymptotic formulas are provided for the numbers of free subgroups of given finite index, conjugacy classes of such subgroups, or, equivalently, various types of hypermaps and their isomorphism classes.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the asymptotics of several growth functions related to twisted conjugacy on virtually abelian groups. First, we study the twisted conjugacy growth function, which counts the number of twisted conjugacy classes intersecting the ball of radius r around the identity element. Thereafter we study the function that measures the size of the intersection of a given twisted conjugacy class with the balls around the identity element. Finally, we study the number of induced twisted conjugacy classes in certain finite quotients of the given virtually abelian group. In each of these cases we obtain a polynomial asymptotic behaviour of these growth functions.

On Growth Functions of Coxeter Groups

Abstract:Let $(W, S)$ be a Coxeter system of rank $n$ and let $p_{(W, S)}(t)$ be its growth function. It is known that $p_{(W, S)}(q^{-1}) < \infty$ holds for all $n \leq q \in \mathbb{N}$. In this paper we will show that this still holds for $q = n-1$, if $(W, S)$ is $2$-spherical. Moreover, we will prove that $p_{(W, S)}(q^{-1}) = \infty$ holds for $q = n-2$, if the Coxeter diagram of $(W, S)$ is the complete graph. These two results provide a complete characterization of the finiteness of the growth function in the case of $2$-spherical Coxeter systems with complete Coxeter diagram.
