Abstract:This paper studies the locally uniform exponential growth and product set growth for a finitely generated group $G$ acting properly on a finite product of hyperbolic spaces. Under the assumption of coarsely dense orbits or shadowing property on factors, we prove that any finitely generated non-virtually abelian subgroup has uniform exponential growth. These assumptions are fulfilled in many hierarchically hyperbolic groups, including mapping class groups, specially cubulated groups and BMW groups. Moreover, if $G$ acts weakly acylindrically on each factor, we show that, with two exceptional classes of subgroups, $G$ has uniform product set growth. As corollaries, this gives a complete classification of subgroups with product set growth for any group acting discretely on a simply connected manifold with pinched negative curvature, for groups acting acylindrically on trees, and for 3-manifold groups.

Uniform growth in small cancellation groups

Abstract:An open question asks whether every group acting acylindrically on a hyperbolic space has uniform exponential growth. We prove that the class of groups of uniform uniform exponential growth acting acylindrically on a hyperbolic space is closed under taking certain geometric small cancellation quotients. There are two consequences: firstly, there is a finitely generated acylindrically hyperbolic group that has uniform exponential growth but has arbitrarily large torsion balls. Secondly, the uniform uniform exponential growth rate of a classical $C''(\lambda)$-small cancellation group, for sufficiently small $\lambda$, is bounded from below by a universal positive constant. We give a similar result for uniform entropy-cardinality estimates. This yields an explicit upper bound on the isomorphism class of marked $\delta$-hyperbolic $C''(\lambda)$-small cancellation groups of uniformly bounded entropy in terms of $\delta$ and the entropy bound.

Abstract:We prove that non-elementary hyperbolic groups grow exponentially more quickly than their infinite index quasiconvex subgroups. The proof uses the classical tools of automatic structures and Perron–Frobenius theory. We also extend the main result to relatively hyperbolic groups and cubulated groups. These extensions use the notion of growth tightness and the work of Dahmani, Guirardel and Osin on rotating families.

Abstract:A group $G$ is said to be equationally Noetherian if every system of equations in $G$ is equivalent to a finite subsystem. We show that all free-by-cyclic groups are equationally Noetherian. As a corollary, we deduce that the set of exponential growth rates of a free-by-cyclic group is well ordered. Along the way, we prove that free-by-cyclic groups with polynomially growing monodromies of infinite order admit non-elementary 4-acylindrical actions on trees. We show that the splittings arising from the improved relative train track machinery of Bestvina-Feighn-Handel are 2-acylindrical when the growth is at least quadratic.

Uniform exponent bounds on the number of primitive extensions of number fields

Abstract:A folklore conjecture asserts the existence of a constant $c_n > 0$ such that $\#\mathcal{F}_n(X) \sim c_n X$ as $X\to \infty$, where $\mathcal{F}_n(X)$ is the set of degree $n$ extensions $K/\mathbb{Q}$ with discriminant bounded by $X$. This conjecture is known if $n \leq 5$, but even the weaker conjecture that there exists an absolute constant $C\geq 1$ such that $\#\mathcal{F}_n(X) \ll_n X^C$ remains unknown and apparently out of reach. Here, we make progress on this weaker conjecture (which we term the "uniform exponent conjecture") in two ways. First, we reduce the general problem to that of studying relative extensions of number fields whose Galois group is an almost simple group in a natural primitive permutation representation. Second, for almost all such groups, we prove the strongest known upper bound on the number of such extensions. These bounds have the effect of resolving the uniform exponent conjecture for solvable groups, sporadic groups, exceptional groups, and classical groups of bounded rank.

Abstract:We consider harmonic functions of polynomial growth of some order d on Cayley graphs of discrete groups of polynomial volume growth of order D w.r.t. the word metric and prove the optimal estimate for the dimension of the space of such harmonic functions. More precisely, the dimension of this space of harmonic functions is at most of order d^D-1 . As in the already known Riemannian case, this estimate is polynomial in the growth degree. More generally, our techniques also apply to graphs roughly isometric to Cayley graphs of groups of polynomial volume growth.

Abstract:We show that if all the finite coset spaces of a polycyclic group have diameter bounded uniformly below by a polynomial in their size then the group is virtually nilpotent. We obtain the same conclusion for a finitely generated residually torsion-free nilpotent group under the weaker assumption that the finite quotient groups have diameter bounded uniformly below by a polynomial in their size. This extends work of Khukhro and Valette.

Abstract:We prove that any finitely generated elementary amenable group of zero (algebraic) entropy contains a nilpotent subgroup of finite index or, equivalently, any finitely generated elementary amenable group of exponential growth is of uniformly exponential growth. We also show that 0 is an accumulation point of the set of entropies of elementary amenable groups.

Abstract:We give a criterion on pairs $(G,S)$ - where $G$ is a virtually $s$-step nilpotent group and $S$ is a finite generating set - saying whether the geodesic growth is exponential or strictly sub-exponential. Whenever $s=1,2$, this goes further and we prove the geodesic growth is either exponential or polynomial. For $s\ge 3$ however, intermediate growth is possible. We provide an example of virtually $3$-step nilpotent group for which $\gamma_{\mathrm{geod}}(n) \asymp \exp\!\big(n^{3/5}\cdot \log(n)\big)$. This is the first known example of group with intermediate geodesic growth. Along the way, we prove results on the geometry of virtually nilpotent groups, including asymptotics with error terms for their volume growth.

Abstract:In the present paper, we develop geometric analysis techniques on Cayley graphs of finitely generated abelian groups to study the polynomial growth harmonic functions. We provide a geometric analysis proof of the classical Heilbronn theorem (Heilbronn in Proc Camb Philos Soc 45:194–206, 1949 ) and the recent Nayar theorem (Nayar in Bull Pol Acad Sci Math 57:231–242, 2009 ) on polynomial growth harmonic functions on lattices ℤ ^n that does not use a representation formula for harmonic functions. In the abelian group case, by Yau’s gradient estimate, we actually give a simplified proof of a general polynomial growth harmonic function theorem of (Alexopoulos in Ann Probab 30:723–801, 2002 ). We calculate the precise dimension of the space of polynomial growth harmonic functions on finitely generated abelian groups by linear algebra, rather than by Floquet theory Kuchment and Pinchover (Trans Am Math Soc 359:5777–5815, 2007 ). While the Cayley graph not only depends on the abelian group, but also on the choice of a generating set, we find that this dimension depends only on the group itself. Moreover, we also calculate the dimension of solutions to higher order Laplace operators.

Abstract:Choose a polynomial $f$ uniformly at random from the set of all monic polynomials of degree $n$ with integer coefficients in the box $[-L,L]^n$. The main result of the paper asserts that if $L=L(n)$ grows to infinity, then the Galois group of $f$ is the full symmetric group, asymptotically almost surely, as $n\to \infty$.

Abstract:We prove a conjecture of Helfgott on the structure of sets of bounded tripling in bounded rank, which states the following. Let $A$ be a finite symmetric subset of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbf{F})$ for any field $\mathbf{F}$ such that $|A^3| \leq K|A|$. Then there are subgroups $H \trianglelefteq \Gamma \trianglelefteq \langle A \rangle$ such that $A$ is covered by $K^{O_n(1)}$ cosets of $\Gamma$, $\Gamma/H$ is nilpotent of step at most $n-1$, and $H$ is contained in $A^{O_n(1)}$. This theorem includes the Product Theorem for finite simple groups of bounded rank as a special case. As an application of our methods we also show that the diameter of sufficiently quasirandom finite linear groups is poly-logarithmic.

Abstract:We give an explicit description of polynomial growth solutions to some sub-elliptic operators of divergence form with [Formula: see text]-periodic coefficients on the Heisenberg group, where the periodicity has to be meant with respect to the Heisenberg geometry. We show that the polynomial growth solutions are necessarily polynomials with [Formula: see text]-periodic coefficients. We also prove the Liouville-type theorem for the Dirichlet problem to these sub-elliptic equations on an unbounded domain on the Heisenberg group, show that any bounded solution to the Dirichlet problem must be constant.

Abstract:In an evolutionary system in which the rules of mutation are local in nature, the number of possible outcomes after $m$ mutations is an exponential function of $m$ but with a rate that depends only on the set of rules and not the size of the original object. We apply this principle to find a uniform upper bound for the growth rate of certain groups including the mapping class group. We also find a uniform upper bound for the growth rate of the number of homotopy classes of triangulations of an oriented surface that can be obtained from a given triangulation using $m$ diagonal flips.

Abstract:Let $X$ be an integral affine scheme of characteristic $p>0$, and $\sigma $ a non-identity automorphism of $X$. If $\sigma $ is $\textit{exponential}$, i.e., induced from a ${\bf G}_a$-action on $X$, then $\sigma $ is obviously of order $p$. It is easy to see that the converse is not true in general. In fact, there exists $X$ which admits an automorphism of order $p$, but admits no non-trivial ${\bf G}_a$-actions. However, the situation is not clear in the case where $X$ is the affine space ${\bf A}_R^n$, because ${\bf A}_R^n$ admits various ${\bf G}_a$-actions as well as automorphisms of order $p$. In this paper, we study exponentiality of automorphisms of ${\bf A}_R^n$ of order $p$, where the difficulty stems from the non-uniqueness of ${\bf G}_a$-actions inducing an exponential automorphism. Our main results are as follows. (1) We show that the triangular automorphisms of ${\bf A}_R^n$ of order $p$ are exponential in some low-dimensional cases. (2) We construct a non-exponential automorphism of ${\bf A}_R^n$ of order $p$ for each $n\ge 2$. Here, $R$ is any UFD which is not a field. (3) We investigate the ${\bf G}_a$-actions inducing an elementary automorphism of ${\bf A}_R^n$.
