Abstract:This paper studies the locally uniform exponential growth and product set growth for a finitely generated group $G$ acting properly on a finite product of hyperbolic spaces. Under the assumption of coarsely dense orbits or shadowing property on factors, we prove that any finitely generated non-virtually abelian subgroup has uniform exponential growth. These assumptions are fulfilled in many hierarchically hyperbolic groups, including mapping class groups, specially cubulated groups and BMW groups. Moreover, if $G$ acts weakly acylindrically on each factor, we show that, with two exceptional classes of subgroups, $G$ has uniform product set growth. As corollaries, this gives a complete classification of subgroups with product set growth for any group acting discretely on a simply connected manifold with pinched negative curvature, for groups acting acylindrically on trees, and for 3-manifold groups.

Abstract:We prove that non-elementary hyperbolic groups grow exponentially more quickly than their infinite index quasiconvex subgroups. The proof uses the classical tools of automatic structures and Perron–Frobenius theory. We also extend the main result to relatively hyperbolic groups and cubulated groups. These extensions use the notion of growth tightness and the work of Dahmani, Guirardel and Osin on rotating families.

Uniform growth in small cancellation groups

Abstract:An open question asks whether every group acting acylindrically on a hyperbolic space has uniform exponential growth. We prove that the class of groups of uniform uniform exponential growth acting acylindrically on a hyperbolic space is closed under taking certain geometric small cancellation quotients. There are two consequences: firstly, there is a finitely generated acylindrically hyperbolic group that has uniform exponential growth but has arbitrarily large torsion balls. Secondly, the uniform uniform exponential growth rate of a classical $C''(\lambda)$-small cancellation group, for sufficiently small $\lambda$, is bounded from below by a universal positive constant. We give a similar result for uniform entropy-cardinality estimates. This yields an explicit upper bound on the isomorphism class of marked $\delta$-hyperbolic $C''(\lambda)$-small cancellation groups of uniformly bounded entropy in terms of $\delta$ and the entropy bound.

Abstract:Let $G$ be an acylindrically hyperbolic group on a $\delta$-hyperbolic space $X$. Assume there exists $M$ such that for any finite generating set $S$ of $G$, the set $S^M$ contains a hyperbolic element on $X$. Suppose that $G$ is equationally Noetherian. Then we show the set of the growth rates of $G$ is well-ordered (Theorem 1.1). The conclusion was known for hyperbolic groups, and this is a generalization. Our result applies to all lattices in simple Lie groups of rank-1 (Theorem 1.3), and more generally, some family of relatively hyperbolic groups (Theorem 1.2). It also applies to the fundamental group, of exponential growth, of a closed orientable $3$-manifold except for the case that the manifold has Sol-geometry (Theorem 5.7).

Intermediate geodesic growth in virtually nilpotent groups

Abstract:We give a criterion on pairs $(G,S)$ - where $G$ is a virtually $s$-step nilpotent group and $S$ is a finite generating set - saying whether the geodesic growth is exponential or strictly sub-exponential. Whenever $s=1,2$, this goes further and we prove the geodesic growth is either exponential or polynomial. For $s\ge 3$ however, intermediate growth is possible. We provide an example of virtually $3$-step nilpotent group for which $\gamma_{\mathrm{geod}}(n) \asymp \exp\!\big(n^{3/5}\cdot \log(n)\big)$. This is the first known example of group with intermediate geodesic growth. Along the way, we prove results on the geometry of virtually nilpotent groups, including asymptotics with error terms for their volume growth.

Abstract:A classical result of Jørgensen and Thurston shows that the set of volumes of finite volume complete hyperbolic $3$-manifolds is a well-ordered subset of the real numbers of order type~$\omega^\omega$; moreover, each volume can only be attained by finitely many isometry types of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds. Fujiwara and Sela established a group-theoretic companion of this result: If $\Gamma$ is a non-elementary hyperbolic group, then the set of exponential growth rates of~$\Gamma$ is well-ordered, the order type is at least~$\omega^\omega$, and each growth rate can only be attained by finitely many finite generating sets (up to automorphisms). In this talk, we outline this work of Fujiwara and Sela and discuss related results.

Abstract:We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a free-by-free group to be relatively hyperbolic with a cusp-preserving structure. Namely, if $\phi_1, \ldots , \phi_k $ is a collection of exponentially growing outer automorphisms with a common invariant \emph{subgroup system} such that any conjugacy class in the complement of this system grows exponentially under iteration by all $\phi_i$, then such a subgroup system can be used to construct a collection of peripheral subgroups relative to which, the extension of $\mathbb F$ by the free group generated by sufficiently high powers of $\phi_1, \ldots , \phi_k $, will be hyperbolic.

Confined subgroups in groups with contracting elements

Abstract:In this paper, we study the growth of confined subgroups through boundary actions of groups with contracting elements. We establish that the growth rate of a confined subgroup is strictly greater than half of the ambient growth rate in groups with purely exponential growth. Along the way, several results are obtained on the Hopf decomposition for boundary actions of subgroups with respect to conformal measures. In particular, we prove that confined subgroups are conservative, and examples of subgroups with nontrivial Hopf decomposition are constructed. We show a connection between Hopf decomposition and quotient growth and provide a dichotomy on quotient growth of Schreier graphs for subgroups in hyperbolic groups.

Abstract:We define the class of groups of bounded type from tile inflations. These tile inflations also determine some automata describing the groups. In the case when the automata are stationary and finite-state, we show that if the set of incompressible elements of a group in this class is finite, then this group has subexponential growth with a bounded power in the exponent. Then we describe some examples with certain special structures of orbital graphs and give explicit ways to find the upper bounds for the growth functions of these groups.

Abstract:Given an inverse semigroup $G_0$ of bounded type, we show, along with some other assumptions, that if the set of incompressible elements of $G_0$ is finite, then any finitely generated subgroup $G$ of the topological full group $\mathsf{F}(G_0)$ that is orbit equivalent to $G_0$ has subexponential growth with a bounded power in the exponent.

Abstract:If $G$ is a finitely generated group and $X$ a $G$-set, the growth of the action of $G$ on $X$ is the function that measures the largest cardinality of a ball of radius $n$ in the Schreier graph $\Gamma(G,X)$. In this note we consider the following stability problem: if $G,H$ are finitely generated groups admitting a faithful action of growth bounded above by a function $f$, does the free product $G \ast H$ also admit a faithful action of growth bounded above by $f$? We show that the answer is positive under additional assumptions, and negative in general. In the negative direction, our counter-examples are obtained with $G$ either the commutator subgroup of the topological full group of a minimal and expansive homeomorphism of the Cantor space; or $G$ a Houghton group. In both cases, the group $G$ admits a faithful action of linear growth, and we show that $G\ast H$ admits no faithful action of subquadratic growth provided $H$ is non-trivial. In the positive direction, we describe a class of groups that admit actions of linear growth and is closed under free products and exhibit examples within this class, among which the Grigorchuk group.

Abstract:We lay the foundations for the study of relatively quasiconvex subgroups of relatively hyperbolic groups. These foundations require that we first work out a coherent theory of countable relatively hyperbolic groups (not necessarily finitely generated). We prove the equivalence of Gromov, Osin, and Bowditch's definitions of relative hyperbolicity for countable groups. We then give several equivalent definitions of relatively quasiconvex subgroups in terms of various natural geometries on a relatively hyperbolic group. We show that each relatively quasiconvex subgroup is itself relatively hyperbolic, and that the intersection of two relatively quasiconvex subgroups is again relatively quasiconvex. In the finitely generated case, we prove that every undistorted subgroup is relatively quasiconvex, and we compute the distortion of a finitely generated relatively quasiconvex subgroup.

Virtually free-by-cyclic groups

Abstract:We obtain a homological characterisation of virtually free-by-cyclic groups among groups that are hyperbolic and virtually compact special. As a consequence, we show that many groups known to be coherent actually possess the stronger property of being virtually free-by-cyclic. In particular, we show that all one-relator groups with torsion are virtually free-by-cyclic, solving a conjecture of Baumslag.

Abstract:We prove that for a finitely generated group G with a free factor system and an injective endomorphism that preserves the free factor system, the ascending HNN extension of G is hyperbolic relative to a collection of maximal parabolic subgroups. As a corollary, we see that if an injective endomorphism of a finite rank free group F is exponentially growing, the ascending HNN extension of F is relatively hyperbolic.

Abstract:Suppose G is a group that splits as or , where A , B , C are relatively hyperbolic groups, the monomorphisms and are quasiisometric embeddings of pairs, and G is hyperbolic relative to a natural collection of subgroups. We show that C has finite relative height in G if and only if C is relatively quasiconvex in G . This extends the work of Pal, giving an exact analogue of a theorem of Mj in the context of relatively hyperbolic groups and partially answers a question of Hruska–Wise.

Abstract:We study the conjugacy class growth function in finitely generated virtually abelian groups. That is, the number of elements in the ball of radius $n$ in the Cayley graph which intersect a fixed conjugacy class. In the class of virtually abelian groups, we prove that this function is always asymptotically equivalent to a polynomial. Furthermore, we show that in any affine Coxeter group, the degree of polynomial growth of a conjugacy class is equivalent to the reflection length of any element of that class.

Abstract:In the present paper, we develop geometric analysis techniques on Cayley graphs of finitely generated abelian groups to study the polynomial growth harmonic functions. We provide a geometric analysis proof of the classical Heilbronn theorem (Heilbronn in Proc Camb Philos Soc 45:194–206, 1949 ) and the recent Nayar theorem (Nayar in Bull Pol Acad Sci Math 57:231–242, 2009 ) on polynomial growth harmonic functions on lattices ℤ ^n that does not use a representation formula for harmonic functions. In the abelian group case, by Yau’s gradient estimate, we actually give a simplified proof of a general polynomial growth harmonic function theorem of (Alexopoulos in Ann Probab 30:723–801, 2002 ). We calculate the precise dimension of the space of polynomial growth harmonic functions on finitely generated abelian groups by linear algebra, rather than by Floquet theory Kuchment and Pinchover (Trans Am Math Soc 359:5777–5815, 2007 ). While the Cayley graph not only depends on the abelian group, but also on the choice of a generating set, we find that this dimension depends only on the group itself. Moreover, we also calculate the dimension of solutions to higher order Laplace operators.
