Abstract:Let $X$ be a complex smooth Fano variety of dimension $n$. Assume that $X$ admits a birational contraction of an extremal ray. In this paper, we give a classification of such $X$ when the pseudoindex is equal to $\frac{\dim X}{2}$.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to classify Fano varieties with specific properties. Specifically, the author Kiwamu Watanabe focuses on those complex smooth Fano manifolds \(X\) of dimension \(n\) that satisfy the following conditions: 1. \(X\) admits a birational contraction of an extremal ray. 2. The pseudo - index of \(X\) is equal to half of its dimension, that is, \(\iota_X=\frac{n}{2}\). In algebraic geometry, Fano manifolds are an important class of objects, and their anticanonical divisors are ample. The study of Fano manifolds usually involves two important invariants: the Fano index and the pseudo - index. The Fano index refers to the largest integer that can divide \(-K_X\) in the Picard group of \(X\); while the pseudo - index refers to the minimum anticanonical degree of rational curves on \(X\). Historically, the study of Fano manifolds has mainly focused on the Fano index, but the study of the pseudo - index is more difficult. For example, according to Mori's "bend - and - break" lemma, the pseudo - index \(\iota_X\leq n + 1\). In addition, Cho, Miyaoka, and Shepherd - Barron proved that when \(\iota_X=n + 1\), \(X\) is isomorphic to the projective space \(\mathbb{P}^n\); Dedieu and Höring proved that when \(\iota_X=n\), \(X\) is isomorphic to the smooth quadratic hypersurface \(Q^n\). The main purpose of this paper is to study the classification of \(n\)-dimensional Fano manifolds \(X\) when \(\iota_X=\frac{n}{2}\) and \(\rho_X>1\), and \(X\) admits a minimal projective contraction. Through detailed calculations and theoretical analysis, the author gives the specific classification results of such manifolds and verifies that the pseudo - index of these manifolds is indeed equal to \(\frac{n}{2}\). The main results include: - When \(X\) is the blow - up of the projective space \(\mathbb{P}^n\) along the linear subspace \(\mathbb{P}^{\frac{n}{2}-1}\). - When \(X\) is the blow - up of the smooth quadratic hypersurface \(Q^n\) along the linear subspace \(\mathbb{P}^{\frac{n}{2}-1}\) or the smooth quadratic submanifold \(Q^{\frac{n}{2}-1}\). - Some other specific constructions, such as projective bundles. These results are helpful for further understanding the structure and properties of Fano manifolds, especially the classification when the pseudo - index is half of the dimension.
