Abstract:In this paper, inspired by work of Fano, Morin and Campana--Flenner, we give a full projective classification of (however singular) varieties of dimension 3 whose general hyperplane sections have negative Kodaira dimension, and we partly extend such a classification to varieties of dimension $n\geq 4$ whose general surface sections have negative Kodaira dimension. In particular we prove that a variety of dimension $n\geq 3$ whose general surface sections have negative Kodaira dimension is birationally equivalent to the product of a general surface section times $\p^{n-2}$ unless (possibly) if the variety is a cubic hypersurface.

Abstract:We study smooth complex projective varieties X of maximal Albanese dimension and of general type satisfying (chi)(X, O-X) = 0. We prove that the Albanese variety of X has at least three simple factors. Examples were constructed by Ein and Lazarsfeld, and we prove that in dimension 3, these examples are (up to abelian etale covers) the only ones. By results of 'lien, another source of examples is provided by varieties X of maximal Albanese dimension and of general type satisfying h(0) (X, omega(X)) = 1. Examples were constructed by Chen and Hawn, and again, we prove that in dimension 3, these examples are (up to abelian etale covers) the only ones. We also formulate a conjecture on the general structure of these varieties in all dimensions.

We define stable minimal models and construct their projective coarse moduli spaces under certain natural conditions. This can be applied to a wide range of moduli problems in algebraic geometry.

Abstract:This paper lays the foundation for determining the Kodaira dimension of the projectivized strata of Abelian differentials with prescribed zero and pole orders in large genus. We work with the moduli space of multi-scale differentials constructed in [BCGGM2] which provides an orbifold compactification of these strata. We establish the projectivity of the moduli space of multi-scale differentials, describe the locus of canonical singularities, and compute a series of effective divisor classes. Moreover, we exhibit a perturbation of the canonical class which allows the corresponding pluri-canonical forms to extend over the locus of non-canonical singularities. As applications, we certify general type for strata with few zeros as well as for strata with equidistributed zero orders when g is sufficiently large. In particular, we show general type for the odd spin components of the minimal strata for g > 12.
On the Kodaira Dimension of the Moduli of Deformation Generalised Kummer Varieties

Abstract:We prove general type results for orthogonal modular varieties associated with the moduli of compact hyperkähler manifolds of deformation generalised Kummer type ('deformation generalised Kummer varieties'). In particular, we consider moduli spaces of deformation generalised Kummer fourfolds with split-polarisation of degree $2d$. Our main result is that when $d$ is prime or $2d$ is square-free then the associated modular varieties are of general type when $d$ exceeds bounds we determine, subject to the existence of certain low-weight cusp forms for $\operatorname{O}(2,n)$. As a corollary, we conclude that the corresponding moduli spaces are also of general type.

Abstract:Let $X \subset \mathbb P^{n+c}$ be a nondegenerate smooth projective variety of dimension $n$ defined by quadratic equations. For such varieties, P. Ionescu and F. Russo proved the Hartshorne conjecture on complete intersections, which states that X is a complete intersection provided that $n\geq 2c+1$. As the extremal case, they also classified $X$ with $n=2c$. In this paper, we classify $X$ with $n=2c-1$.

Abstract:We study the Albanese image of a compact Kähler manifold whose geometric genus is one. In particular, we prove that if the Albanese map is not surjective, then the manifold maps surjectively onto an ample divisor in some abelian variety, and in many cases the ample divisor is a theta divisor. With a further natural assumption on the topology of the manifold, we prove that the manifold is an algebraic fiber space over a genus two curve. Finally we apply these results to study the geometry of a compact Kähler manifold which has the same Hodge numbers as those of an abelian variety of the same dimension.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the geometry of projective varieties polarised by ample and more generally nef and big Weil divisors. First we study birational boundedness of linear systems. We show that if $X$ is a projective variety of dimension $d$ with $\epsilon$-lc singularities for $\epsilon>0$, and if $N$ is a nef and big Weil divisor on $X$ such that $N-K_X$ is pseudo-effective, then the linear system $|mN|$ defines a birational map for some natural number $m$ depending only on $d,\epsilon$. This is key to proving various other results. For example, it implies that if $N$ is a big Weil divisor (not necessarily nef) on a klt Calabi-Yau variety of dimension $d$, then the linear system $|mN|$ defines a birational map for some natural number $m$ depending only on $d$. It also gives new proofs of some known results, for example, if $X$ is an $\epsilon$-lc Fano variety of dimension $d$ then taking $N=-K_X$ we recover birationality of $|-mK_X|$ for bounded $m$. We prove similar birational boundedness results for nef and big Weil divisors $N$ on projective klt varieties $X$ when both $K_X$ and $N-K_X$ are pseudo-effective (here $X$ is not assumed $\epsilon$-lc). Using the above we show boundedness of polarised varieties under some natural conditions. We extend these to boundedness of semi-log canonical Calabi-Yau pairs polarised by effective ample Weil divisors not containing lc centres. Combining this with the moduli theory of stable pairs we show that polarised Calabi-Yau pairs and polarised Fano pairs admit projective coarse moduli spaces.

Abstract:We show that a cubic fourfold F that is apolar to a Veronese surface has the property that its variety of power sums VSP(F,10) is singular along a K3 surface of genus 20. We prove that these cubics form a divisor in the moduli space of cubic fourfolds and that this divisor is not a Noether-Lefschetz divisor. We use this result to prove that there is no nontrivial Hodge correspondence between a very general cubic and its VSP.

Abstract:To prove that a modular variety is of general type, there are three types of obstructions: reflective, cusp and elliptic obstructions. In this paper, we give a quantitative estimate of the reflective obstructions for the unitary case. This shows in particular that the reflective obstructions are small enough in higher dimension, say greater than $138$. Our result reduces the study of the Kodaira dimension of unitary modular varieties to the construction of a cusp form of small weight in a quantitative manner. As a byproduct, we formulate and partially prove the finiteness of Hermitian lattices admitting reflective modular forms, which is a unitary analog of the conjecture by Gritsenko-Nikulin in the orthogonal case. Our estimate of the reflective obstructions uses Prasad's volume formula.

Abstract:We obtain lower bounds for the dimension of fixed loci of abelian $p$-groups acting on smooth projective varieties. Those arise from modulo p Chern numbers, and are shown to be optimal. The bounds are expressed in a natural way by introducing an appropriate filtration on the modulo $p$ cobordism ring. They are obtained using equivariant localization methods, via the concentration theorem, and by a technique of "partition dividing".

We show that $X$ is a toric variety if and only if $X$ admits an int-amplified endomorphism with totally invariant ramification divisor.
