Abstract:The notion of an Egyptian domain (where the analogue of Egyptian fractions works appropriately), first explored by Guerrieri-Loper-Oman, is extended to the more general notions of generically and locally Egyptian domains. Results from the previous paper are extended, as well as reinterpreted in the new expanded context. It is shown that localizations of polynomial rings are typically Egyptian, that positive semigroup-graded domains are not Egyptian, and that affine semigroup rings are not Egyptian unless the semigroup is a group. However, any finitely generated algebra over a field or $\mathbb Z$ is shown to be locally Egyptian. It is further shown that if $R$ is a pullback of $S$, then $R$ is Egyptian if and only if $S$ is.

Abstract:The notion of an \emph{Egyptian} integral domain $D$ (where every fraction can be written as a sum of unit fractions with denominators from $D$) is extended here to the notion that a ring $R$ is \emph{$W$-Egyptian}, with $W$ a multiplicative set in $R$. The new notion allows denominators just from $W$. It is shown that several results about Egyptian domains can be extended to the $W$-Egyptian context, though some cannot, as shown in counterexamples. In particular, being a sum of unit fractions from $W$ is \emph{not} equivalent to being a distinct sum of unit fractions from $W$, so we need to add the notion of the \emph{strictly} $W$-Egyptian ring. Connections are made with Jacobson radicals, power series, products of rings, factor rings, modular arithmetic, and monoid algebras.

Abstract:From varying Egyptian fraction equations we obtain generalizations of primary pseudoperfect numbers and Giuga numbers which we call prime power psuedoperfect numbers and prime power Giuga numbers respectively. We show that a sequence of Amarnath Murthy in the OEIS is a subsequence of the sequence of prime power psuedoperfect numbers. Prime factorization conditions sufficient to imply a number is a prime power pseudoperfect number or a prime power Giuga number are given. The conditions on prime factorizations naturally give rise to a generalization of Fermat primes which we call extended Fermat primes.

On sums of Egyptian fractions

Abstract:Let $n,d$, and $k$ be positive integers where $n$ and $d$ are coprime. Our two main results are Theorem 1. There is a partition of the infinite interval $[kd,\infty)$ of positive integers into a family of finite sets $X$ for which the sum of the reciprocals of the elements in $X$ is $n/d$. Theorem 1. There is a partition of $[2kd,\infty)$ into an infinite family of infinite sets $Y$ for which the sum of the reciprocals of the elements in $Y$ is $n/d$. Our method is grounded in the Vital Identity, $1/z = 1/(z+1) + 1/z(z+1)$, which holds for every complex number $z \notin \{-1,0\}$, and which gives rise to an eponymous algorithm that serves as our tool. At the core of our Theorems 1 and 2 is the number theoretic function $\star: x\mapsto \star x := x(x+1)$ into whose properties this paper continues an investigation initiated in [7].

Abstract:Answering a question of Erdős and Graham, we show that for each fixed positive rational number $x$ the number of ways to write $x$ as a sum of reciprocals of distinct positive integers each at most $n$ is $2^{(c_x + o(1))n}$ for an explicit constant $c_x$ increasing with $x$.

Abstract:The article presents several methods for the arithmetic of finite abelian groups. We introduce a tool - already used by Delsarte in [1] as I found out later - analogous to Dirichlet's convolution to obtain combinatorial results on these groups. Using this convolution and some group actions, we deduce an interesting fact : the number of generating subsets of a finite abelian group is always a multiple of the order of the group. Eventually, we prove a theorem about the generation of the group of permutations of an abelian group G using only transpositions and translations from the group G.

Abstract:We find an upper bound for the number of groups of order $n$ up to isomorphism in the variety $G = A_pA_qA_r$, where $p$, $q$ and $r$ are distinct primes. We also find a bound on the orders and on the number of conjugacy classes of subgroups that are maximal amongst the subgroups of the general linear group that are also in the variety $A_qA_r$.

Abstract:Generalizing work by Belk and Forrest, we develop almost expanding hyperedge replacement systems that build fractal topological spaces as quotients of edge shifts under certain ``gluing'' equivalent relations. We define ESS groups, which are groups of homeomorphisms of these spaces that act as a finitary asynchronous transformations followed by self-similar ones, akin to the action of Scott-Röver-Nekrashevych groups on the Cantor space. We provide sufficient conditions for finiteness properties of such groups, which allow us to show that the airplane and dendrite rearrangement groups have type $F_\infty$, that a group combining dendrite rearrangements and the Grigorchuk group is finitely generated, and that certain ESS groups of edge shifts have type $F_\infty$ (partially addressing a question of Deaconu), in addition to providing new proofs of previously known results about several Thompson-like groups.

Abstract:This survey paper concerns mainly with some asymptotic topological properties of finitely presented discrete groups: quasi-simple filtration (QSF), geometric simple connectivity (GSC), topological inverse-representations, and the notion of easy groups. As we will explain, these properties are central in the theory of discrete groups seen from a topological viewpoint at infinity. Also, we shall outline the main steps of the achievements obtained in the last years around the very general question whether or not all finitely presented groups satisfy these conditions.

Abstract:In 2011, a topic containing the concepts of upper and lower periodic subsets of (basic) algebraic structures was introduced and studied. The concept of ``upper periodic subsets'' can be considered as a generalized topic of ideals and sub-structures (e.g., subgroups, sub-semigroups, sub-magmas, sub-rings, etc.). Hence, it can be improved to a theory in every algebraic structure which extends many basic concepts including the ideals. This paper follows the mentioned goals and studies related to algebraic and topological aspects. For this purpose, first, we state an improved fundamental theorem about the unique direct representation of left upper periodic subsets and then introduce some extensions and generalizations. As a result of the study, we classify sub-semigroups and subgroups of real numbers and introduce some related topics and concenterable upper periodic subsets. We end the study with many research projects and some future directions of the theory.

On fractional matching extendability of Cayley graphs of Abelian groups

Abstract:Fractional matching extendability is a concept that brings together two widely studied topics in graph theory, namely that of fractional matchings and that of matching extendability. A {\em fractional matching} of a graph $\Gamma$ with edge set $E$ is a function $f$ from $E$ to the real interval $[0,1]$ with the property that for each vertex $v$ of $\Gamma$ the sum of the $f$-values of all the edges incident to $v$ is at most $1$. When this sum equals $1$ for each vertex $v$, the fractional matching is {\em perfect}. A graph of order at least $2t+1$ is {\em fractional $t$-extendable} if it contains a matching of size $t$ and if each such matching $M$ can be extended to a fractional perfect matching in the sense that the corresponding function $f$ assigns the value $1$ to each edge of $M$. In this paper we study fractional matching extendability of Cayley graphs of Abelian groups. We show that with the obvious exceptions of cycles of odd length all connected Cayley graphs of Abelian groups are fractional $1$-extendable and we classify the fractional $2$-extendable Cayley graphs of Abelian groups. This extends the classification of $2$-extendable (in the classical sense) connected Cayley graphs of Abelian groups of even order from 1995 obtained by Chan, Chen and Yu.

Algebra of overpartitions

Abstract:In a 2022 paper, Dawsey, Just and the present author prove that the set of integer partitions, taken as a monoid under a partition multiplication operation I defined in my Ph.D. work, is isomorphic to the positive integers as a monoid under integer multiplication. In this note, I extend partition multiplication to the set of overpartitions, which are of much interest in partition theory. I prove the overpartitions form an Abelian group under partition multiplication. Moreover, the overpartitions and the positive rational numbers are isomorphic as multiplicative groups. I then prove further overpartition isomorphisms and discuss approaches to a ring theory of overpartitions.

Abstract:We describe a generalization of the concept of a pc presentation that applies to groups with a nontrivial solvable radical. Such a representation can be much more efficient in terms of memory use and even of arithmetic, than permuattion and matrix representations. We illustrate the use of such representations by constructing a maximal subgroup of the sporadic monster group and calculating its -- hitherto unknown -- character table.

Enumerating Finite Braid Group Orbits on $SL_2(\C)$-Character Varieties

Abstract:We analyze finite orbits of the natural braid group action on the character variety of the $n$ times punctured sphere. Building on recent results relating middle convolution and finite complex reflection groups, our work implements Katz's middle convolution to explicitly classify finite orbits in the $SL_2(\C)$-character variety of the punctured sphere. We provide theoretical results on the existence of finite orbits arising from the imprimitive finite complex reflection groups and formulas for constructing such examples when they exist. In the primitive finite complex reflection groups, we perform an exhaustive search and provide computational results. Our contributions also include Magma computer code for middle convolution and for computing the orbit under this action when it is known to be finite.
