Abstract:We have established various criteria for the topological transitivity of families of continuous (holomorphic) functions. Furthermore, by leveraging the properties of expanding families of meromorphic functions, we offer an alternative proof of Montel's three point theorem.

Abstract:We want to discuss various applications of modular forms in topology. The starting point is elliptic genus and its generalizations. The main techniques are the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, the Atiyah-Bott-Segal-Singer Lefschetz fixed point formula, Kac-Moody Lie algebras, modular forms and theta-functions. Just as the representations theory of classical Lie groups has close connections with the Atiyah-Singer index formula as exposed in [A1], the representation theory of loop groups plays very important role in our study. One of the most important new features of loop group representations is the modular invariance of the Kac-Weyl character formula, which allows us to derive many interesting new results and to unify many important old results in topology. In this paper we will develope along this line. We hope that the other features of loop group representations, such as fusion rules and tensor category structure may also be applied to topology. See the discussions in §3. The contents of this paper is organized in the following way. In §1 we introduce elliptic genus by combining index theory and the representation theory of loop groups. The relation of the classical index theory with representation theory of classical Lie groups was discussed in [A1]. Here one finds that just replacing the classical Lie groups by their corresponding loop groups, we get the complete theory of elliptic genus, or more generally the index theory on loop space. Especially the Dirac operator and the Witten genus of loop space are derived more convincingly in this way. Then all of the other well-known properties of elliptic genus, such as functional equations, characterizations by rigidity and fibrations, can be easily obtained. Here we only pick some less well-known results to discuss, for example the expressions of the parameters in elliptic genera in terms of theta-functions. Different from the classical Lie group case, a new feature in our situation appears, the modular invariance which, by combining with index theory, is applied to obtain many new topological results. This is the content of §2. Most results in this section are special cases of more general results. For simplicity we only give the main ideas of the proofs. We make some geometric constructions in §3 to understand elliptic cohomology. The construction in §3.3 is motivated by the vertex operator algebra construction of the monstrous moonshine module. Two Applications of Topological Fixed Point Theory

Abstract:We give a new proof of Cartan's fixed point theorem using topological fixed point theory. For an odd dimensional, simply connected and complete manifold having non-positive curvature, we further prove that every isometry with finite order not only fixes a point, but also maps a pencil of geodesics to itself. We apply similar techniques to the automorphism group of a smoothly bounded domain in the complex plane having connectivity three or more. We show that any prime dividing the order of this finite group must divide a certain integer depending only on the connectivity of the domain.

On supratopologies, normalized families and Frankl conjecture

Abstract:We introduce some generalized topological concepts to deal with union-closed families, and show that one can reduce the proof of Frankl conjecture to some families of so-called supratopological spaces. We prove some results on the structure of normalized families, presenting a new way of reducing such a family to a smaller one using dual families. Applying our reduction method, we prove a refinement of a conjecture originally proposed by Poonen. Finally, we show that Frankl Conjecture holds for the class of families obtained from successively applying the reduction process to a power set.

Abstract:In this paper we will develop a general approach which shows that generalized 'critical relations' of families of locally defined holomorphic maps on the complex plane unfold transversally. The main idea is to define a transfer operator, which is a local analogue of the Thurston pullback operator, using holomorphic motions. Assuming a so-called lifting property is satisfied, we obtain information about the spectrum of this transfer operator and thus about transversality. An important new feature of our method is that it is not global: the maps we consider are only required to be defined and holomorphic on a neighbourhood of some finite set. We will illustrate this method by obtaining transversality for a wide class of one-parameter families of interval and circle maps, for example for maps with flat critical points, but also for maps with complex analytic extensions such as certain polynomial-like maps. As in Tsujii's approach (Tsujii M 1994 A note on Milnor and Thurston's monotonicity theoremGeometry and Analysis in Dynamical Systemvol 14 (Singapore: World Scientific) pp 60-2; Tsujii M 2000 Ergod. Theor. Dyn. Syst.20925-933), for real maps we obtain positive transversality (where > 0 holds instead of just not equal 0), and thus monotonicity of entropy for these families, and also (as an easy application) for the real quadratic family. This method additionally gives results for unimodal families of the form x -> vertical bar x vertical bar(l) vertical bar c for l > 1 not necessarily an even integer and c real.
Topological structure of functions with isolated critical points on a 3-manifold

Abstract:To each isolated critical point of a smooth function on a 3-manifold we put in correspondence a tree (graph without cycles). We will prove that functions are topologically equivalent in the neighborhoods of critical points if and only if the corresponding trees are isomorphic. A complete topological invariant of functions with isolated critical points, on a closed 3-manifold, will be constructed.

Abstract:<p>Given a directed family of topological groups, the finest topology on their union making each injection continuous need not be a group topology, because the multiplication may fail to be jointly continuous. This begs the question of when the union is a topological group with respect to this topology. If the family is countable, the answer is well known in most cases. We study this question in the context of so-called <em>long</em> families, which are as far as possible from countable ones. As a first step, we present answers to the question for families of group-valued continuous maps and homeomorphism groups, and provide additional examples.</p>

Computing Topological Invariants Using Fixed Points

Abstract:When a torus acts on a compact oriented manifold with isolated fixed points, the equivariant localization formula of Atiyah--Bott and Berline--Vergne converts the integral of an equivariantly closed form into a finite sum over the fixed points of the action, thus providing a powerful tool for computing integrals on a manifold. An integral can also be viewed as a pushforward map from a manifold to a point, and in this guise it is intimately related to the Gysin homomorphism. This article highlights two applications of the equivariant localization formula. We show how to use it to compute characteristic numbers of a homogeneous space and to derive a formula for the Gysin map of a fiber bundle.

Abstract:Simple boundary expressions for the k-th power of the cotangent line class on the moduli space of stable 1-pointed genus g curves are found for k >= 2g. The method is by virtual localization on the moduli space of maps to the projective line. As a consequence, nontrivial tautological classes in the kernel of the push-forward map associated to the irreducible boundary divisor of the moduli space of stable g+1 curves are constructed. The geometry of genus g+1 curves then provides universal equations in genus g Gromov-Witten theory. As an application, we prove all the Gromov-Witten identities conjectured recently by K. Liu and H. Xu.

Abstract:The topological equivalence classification for linear flows on $\mathbb{R}^n$ had been completely solved by Kuiper and independently Ladis in 1973. However, Ladis' proof was published in a Russian journal which isn't easily available, Kuiper's proof is more topological and a little bit subtle. Aiming at topological conjugacy classification, mainly based on the ideas of Kuiper, we introduce other techniques and try to present an elementary and self-contained proof just using linear algebra and elementary topology.

Abstract:In this paper we consider families of holomorphic maps defined on subsets of the complex plane, and show that the technique developed in [24] to treat unfolding of critical relations can also be used to deal with cases where the critical orbit converges to a hyperbolic attracting or a parabolic periodic orbit. As before this result applies to rather general families of maps, such as polynomial-like mappings, provided some lifting property holds. Our Main Theorem states that either the multiplier of a hyperbolic attracting periodic orbit depends univalently on the parameter and bifurcations at parabolic periodic points are generic, or one has persistency of periodic orbits with a fixed multiplier.

Abstract:We define and develop a homotopy invariant notion for the topological complexity of a map f:X→Y, denoted TC(f), that interacts with TC(X) and TC(Y) in the same way cat(f) interacts with cat(X) and cat(Y). Furthermore, TC(f) and cat(f) satisfy the same inequalities as TC(X) and cat(X). We compare it to other invariants defined in the papers [15], [16], [17], [18], [20]. We apply TC(f) to studying group homomorphisms f:H→G.

Abstract:We establish sufficient and necessary conditions for the joint transitivity of linear iterates in a minimal topological dynamical system with commuting transformations. This result provides the first topological analogue of the classical Berend and Bergelson joint ergodicity criterion in measure-preserving systems.

Abstract:Families of objects appear in several contexts, like algebraic topology, theory of deformations, theoretical physics, etc. An unified coordinate-free algebraic framework for families of geometrical quantities is presented here, which allows one to work without introducing ad hoc spaces, by using the language of differential calculus over commutative algebras. An advantage of such an approach, based on the notion of sliceable structures on cylinders, is that the fundamental theorems of standard calculus are straightforwardly generalized to the context of families. As an example of that, we prove the universal homotopy formula.

Abstract:This series explores a new notion of T-homotopy equivalence of flows. The new definition involves embeddings of finite bounded posets preserving the bottom and the top elements and the associated cofibrations of flows. In this third part, it is proved that the generalized T-homotopy equivalences preserve the branching and merging homology theories of a flow. These homology theories are of interest in computer science since they detect the non-deterministic branching and merging areas of execution paths in the time flow of a higher dimensional automaton. The proof is based on Reedy model category techniques.
