Abstract:We study the special value $u=1$ of Artin-Ihara $L$-functions associated to characters of the automorphism group of abelian covers of multigraphs. In particular, we show an annihilation statement analogous to a classical conjecture of Brumer on annihilation of class groups for abelian extensions of number fields and we also calculate the index of an ideal analogous to the classical Stickelberger ideal in algebraic number theory. Along the way, we make some observations about the number of spanning trees in abelian multigraph coverings that may be of independent interest.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime. We study the structure of the cyclotomic Greenberg-Selmer group attached to a general irreducible Artin motive over $\mathbb{Q}$ endowed with an ordinary $p$-stabilization. Under the Leopoldt and the weak $p$-adic Schanuel Conjectures, we show that it is of torsion over the Iwasawa algebra. Under mild hypotheses on $p$ we compute the constant term of its characteristic series in terms of a $p$-adic regulator and we highlight an extra zeros phenomenon. We then focus on Artin motives attached to classical weight one modular forms, to which our preceding results apply unconditionally. We formulate an Iwasawa Main Conjecture in this context and prove one divisibility using a Theorem of Kato.

Abstract:We show that the space of vector-valued Siegel automorphic forms in characteristic $p$ is zero when the weight is outside of an explicit locus. This result is a special case of a general conjecture about Hodge-type Shimura varieties formulated in previous work with W. Goldring.

Abstract:The main goal of this article is to expand the theory of invariants of Artin-Schreier curves by giving a complete classification in genus 3 and 4. To achieve this goal, we first establish standard forms of Artin-Schreier curves and determine all isomorphisms between curves in this form. We then compute reconstructing systems of invariants for curves in each connected component of the strata of the moduli spaces for Artin-Schreier curves of genus 3 and 4 for $p>2$.

Abstract:Our investigation focuses on an additive analogue of the Bloch-Gabber-Kato theorem which establishes a relation between the Milnor $K$-group of a field of positive characteristic and a Galois cohomology group of the field. Extending the Aritin-Schreier-Witt theory, we present an isomorphism from the Mackey product associated with the Witt group and the multiplicative groups to a Galois cohomology group. As a result, we give an expression for the torsion subgroup of the Brauer group of a field, and more generally, the Kato homology groups.

Abstract:We extend our previous classification of stacky curves in positive characteristic using higher ramification data and Artin-Schreier-Witt theory. The main new technical tool introduced is the Artin-Schreier-Witt root stack, a generalization of root stacks to the wildly ramified setting. We then apply our wild Riemann-Hurwitz theorem for stacks to compute the canonical rings of some wild stacky curves.

Abstract:Replacing symmetric powers by divided powers and working over Witt vectors instead of ground fields, I generalize Kawamatas T^1-lifting theorem to characteristic p>0. Combined with the work of Deligne-Illusie on degeneration of the Hodge-de Rham spectral sequences, this gives unobstructedness for certain Calabi-Yau varieties with free crystalline cohomology modules.

Abstract:Let $F/F^+$ be a CM extension and $H_{/F^+}$ a definite unitary group in three variables that splits over $F$. We describe Hecke isotypic components of mod $p$ algebraic modular forms on $H$ at first principal congruence level at $p$ and "minimal" level away from $p$ in terms of the restrictions of the associated Galois representation to decomposition groups at $p$ when these restrictions are tame and sufficiently generic. This confirms an expectation of local-global compatibility in the mod $p$ Langlands program. To prove our result, we develop a local model theory for multitype deformation rings and new methods to work with patched modules that are not free over their scheme-theoretic support.

Abstract:The paper is devoted to the study of deformations of Artinian algebras and zero-dimensional germs of varieties. In particular, an approach is developed to solving the open problem about the nonexistence of rigid Artinian algebras; it is based essentially on the use of the canonical duality in the cotangent complex. Thus, it is shown that there are no rigid Gorenstein Artinian algebras and rigid almost complete intersections. The proof of the latter statement is based on the properties of the torsion functors. More precisely, the tensor product of the conormal and canonical modules of the corresponding Artinian algebra is calculated. In this case, the homology and cohomology groups of higher degrees are also found. Among other things, some estimates are obtained for the dimension of the spaces of the first lower and upper cotangent functors of Artinian algebras, and the relationship between them is described. In conclusion, several examples of nonsmoothable Artinian noncomplete intersections are examined, and some unusual properties of such algebras are discussed.

Abstract:In the case of quadratic forms over a field, it is well-known that the prime spectrum of the Witt ring and the space of orderings of the field determine one another, through associated signature maps. We show that a sililar relation holds for hermitian forms over algebras with involution of the first kind, replacing the usual Witt ring with the mixed Witt ring of such an algebra.

Abstract:We introduce a new invariant of fields that refines their real spectrum and is related to their absolute Galois group: the Artin-Schreier quandle. For formally real number fields, it is freely generated in its variety by a Cantor space of indeterminates. For Laurent series fields, we compute it in terms of the Artin-Schreier quandle of the coefficient field. This result and other examples show that, in general, there are relations.

Abstract:Selmer group for an Artin representation over totally real fields was studied by Greenberg and Vatsal. In this paper we study the Selmer groups for an Artin representation over a totally complex field. We establish an algebraic function of the characteristic ideal of the Selmer group associated to Artin representation over the cyclotomic $\Z_p$- extension of the rational numbers under certain mild hypotheses and construct several examples to illustrate our result. We also prove that in this situation $\mu$-invariant of the dual Selmer group is independent of the choice of the lattice.

Abstract:Our main objective in this paper (which is expository for the most part) is to study the necessary steps to prove a factorization formula for a certain triple product $p$-adic $L$-function guided by the Artin formalism. The key ingredients are: a) the explicit reciprocity laws governing the relationship of diagonal cycles and generalized Heegner cycles to $p$-adic $L$-functions; b) a careful comparison of Chow--Heegner points and twisted Heegner points in Hida families, via formulae of Gross--Zagier type.

On a universal characterisation of $p$-typical Witt vectors

Abstract:For a prime $p$ and a commutative ring $R$ with unity, let $W(R)$ denote the ring of $p$-typical Witt vectors. The ring $W(R)$ is endowed with a Verschiebung operator $W(R)\xrightarrow{V}W(R)$ and a Teichmüller map $R\xrightarrow{\langle \ \rangle}W(R)$. One of the properties satisfied by $V, \langle \ \rangle$ is that the map $R \to W(R)$ given by $x\mapsto V\langle x^p\rangle - p\langle x \rangle$ is an additive map. In this paper we show that for $p\neq 2$, this property essentially characterises the functor $W$. Unlike other characterisations, this only uses the group structure on $W(R)$ and hence is suitable for generalising to the non-commutative setup. We give a conjectural characterisation of Hesselholt's functor of $p$-typical Witt vectors using a universal property for $p\neq 2$. Moreover we provide evidence for this conjecture.

On the Artin vanishing theorem for Stein spaces

Abstract:Artin vanishing theorems for Stein spaces refer to the vanishing of some of their (co)homology groups in degrees higher than the dimension. We obtain new positive and negative results concerning Artin vanishing for the cohomology of a Stein space relative to a Runge open subset. We also prove an Artin vanishing theorem for the Gal(C/R)-equivariant cohomology of a Gal(C/R)-equivariant Stein space relative to the fixed locus.

Abstract:Let $Y\to X$ be an unramified Galois cover of curves over a perfect field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ with $\mathrm{Gal}(Y/X)\cong\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$, and let $J_X$ and $J_Y$ be the Jacobians of $X$ and $Y$ respectively. We consider the $p$-torsion subgroup schemes $J_X[p]$ and $J_Y[p]$, analyze the Galois-module structure of $J_Y[p]$, and find restrictions this structure imposes on $J_Y[p]$ (for example, as manifested in its Ekedahl--Oort type) taking $J_X[p]$ as given.

Abstract:For a global function field K of positive characteristic p, we show that Artin conjecture for L-functions of geometric p-adic Galois representations of K is true in a non-trivial p-adic disk but is false in the full p-adic plane. In particular, we prove the non-rationality of the geometric unit root L-functions.

Abstract:For the module category of an Artin algebra, we generalize the notion of torsion pairs to ideal torsion pairs. Instead of full subcategories of modules, ideals of morphisms of the ambient category are considered. We characterize the functorially finite ideal torsion pairs, which are those fulfilling some nice approximation conditions, first through corresponding functors and then through the notion of ideals determined by objects introduced in this work. As an application of this theory, we generalize preprojective modules, introduce a new homological dimension, the torsion dimension, and establish its connection with the Krull-Gabriel dimension. In particular, it is shown that both dimensions coincide for hereditary Artin algebras.
