Abstract:Let $K$ be the fraction field of a two-dimensional henselian, excellent, equi-characteristic local domain. We prove a local-global principle for Galois cohomology with finite coefficients over $K$. We use classical machinery from étale cohomology theory, drawing upon an idea in Saito's work on two-dimensional local class field theory. This approach works equally well over the function field of a curve over an equi-characteristic henselian discrete valuation field, thereby giving a different proof of (a slightly generalized version of) a recent result of Harbater, Hartmann and Krashen. We also present two applications. One is the Hasse principle for torsors under quasi-split semisimple simply connected groups without $E_8$ factor. The other gives an explicit upper bound for the Pythagoras number of a Laurent series field in three variables. This bound is sharper than earlier estimates.

Abstract:As an application of P. Delgine's theorem (Esnault and Kerz in Acta Math. Vietnam. 37:531-562, 2012) on a finiteness of $l$-adic sheaves on a variety over a finite field, we show the finiteness of étale coverings of such a variety with given degree whose ramification bounded along an effective Cartier divisor. This can be thought of a higher dimensional analogue of the classical Hermite-Minkowski theorem.

Abstract:In the present we develop a fragment of the theory of superfields, polynomials and Marshall's quotient in order to obtain for general special groups, a proof of the Arason-Pfister Hauptsatz (APH): "if $\phi \neq \emptyset$ is an anisotropic form and $\phi \in I^n(F)$ then $dim (\phi) \geq 2^n$". In the process, we also obtain an alternative proof of APH for reduced special groups that avoid the uses of the invariants developed in \cite{dickmann2000special}. The applications of the full Arason-Pfister Hauptsatz leads to interesting properties of graded rings associated to special groups/hyperfields. \textbf{Keywords:} Arason-Pfister Hauptsatz; hyperfields; special groups; Milnor K-theory; graded rings.

A Projective Twist on the Hasse Norm Theorem

Abstract:A finite extension of global fields $L/K$ satisfies the Hasse norm principle if any nonzero element of $K$ has the property that it is a norm locally if and only if it is a norm globally. In 1931, Hasse proved that any cyclic extension satisfies the Hasse norm principle, providing a novel approach to extending the local-global principle to equations with degree greater than $2$. In this paper, we introduce the projective Hasse norm principle, generalizing the Hasse norm principle to multiple fields and asking whether a projective line that contains a norm locally in every field must also contain a norm globally in every field. We show that the projective Hasse norm principle is independent from the conjunction of Hasse norm principles in all of the constituent fields in the general case, but that the latter implies the former when the fields are all Galois and independent. We also prove an analogue of the Hasse norm theorem for the projective Hasse norm theorem, namely that the projective Hasse norm principle holds in all cyclic extensions.

An analogue of a conjecture of Rasmussen and Tamagawa for abelian varieties over function fields

Abstract:Let $L$ be a number field and let $\ell$ be a prime number. Rasmussen and Tamagawa conjectured, in a precise sense, that abelian varieties whose field of definition of the $\ell$-power torsion is both a pro-$\ell$ extension of $L(\mu_\ell)$ and unramified away from $\ell$ are quite rare. In this paper, we formulate an analogue of the Rasmussen--Tamagawa conjecture for non-isotrivial abelian varieties defined over function fields. We provide a proof of our analogue in the case of elliptic curves. In higher dimensions, when the base field is a subfield of the complex numbers, we show that our conjecture is a consequence of the uniform geometric torsion conjecture. Finally, using a theorem of Bakker and Tsimerman we also prove our conjecture unconditionally for abelian varieties with real multiplication.

Approximation and algebraicity in positive characteristic Hahn fields

Abstract:We study the relative algebraic closure $K$ of $\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p((t))$ inside $\bar{\mathbb{F}}((t^{\mathbb{Q}}))$. We show that the supports of elements in $K$ have order type strictly less than $\omega^\omega$. We also recover a theorem by Rayner giving a bound to the ramification away from $p$ in the support of elements in $K$, and an analogue of Rayner's result for the residue field. This work has applications to the decidability of the first order theory of $\mathbb{F}_p((t^{\mathbb{Q}}))$, and other tame fields, in the language of valued fields with a constant symbol for $t$.

Abstract:We extend the Brauer-Siegel theorem to new families of number fields, both in the classical setting of asymptotically bad families and in the more general framework due to Tsfasman and Vlăduţ of asymptotically exact families. We introduce a notion of Galois complexity for extensions of number fields, and show that the generalized Brauer-Siegel theorem, as conjectured by Tsfasman and Vlăduţ, holds for families in which the complexity does not grow too fast. This allows to unify and extend all previously known results. The crucial step in our work is the proof of a new version -- stated in terms of our Galois complexity -- of a fundamental principle due to Stark descending exceptional zeroes of zeta functions down to quadratic number fields. Among the hitherto unknown cases we are able to treat are the families of number fields contained in the solvable Galois closure of a given number field.

Hartogs type extension theorem for the complement of effective and numerically effective divisors

Abstract:In these notes we generalize the Ohsawa's results on the Hartogs extension phenomenon in the complement of effective divisors in Kähler manifolds with semipositive non-flat normal bundle. Namely, we prove that the Hartogs extension phenomenon occurs in the complement of effective and nef divisors with connected supports in Kähler manifolds. We use homological algebra methods instead of a construction of the $(n-1)$-convex exhaustion function. Also, the Demailly-Peternell vanishing theorem is a crucial argument for us. Moreover, we obtain geometric characterizations of the Hartogs phenomenon for the complement of basepoint-free divisors.

Abstract:Let $ \mathcal{A} $ be a $ (p+q)! $-torsion free semiprime ring. We proved that if $ \mathcal{H}, \mathcal{D} : \mathcal{A}\to \mathcal{A} $ are two additive mappings fulfilling the algebraic identity $ 2\mathcal{H}(a^{p+q}) = \mathcal{H}(a^p) a^q+ a^p \mathcal{D}(a^q)+\mathcal{H}(a^q) a^p+ a^q \mathcal{D}(a^p) $ for all $ a\in \mathcal{A} $, then $ \mathcal{H} $ is a generalized derivation with $ \mathcal{D} $ as an associated derivation on $ \mathcal{A} $. In addition to that, it is also proved in this article that $ \mathcal{H}_1 $ is a generalized left derivation associated with a left derivation $ \delta $ on $ \mathcal{A} $ if they fulfilled the algebraic identity $ 2\mathcal{H}_1(a^{p+q}) = a^p \mathcal{H}_1(a^q)+ a^q \delta(a^p)+a^q \mathcal{H}_1(a^p)+ a^p \delta(a^q) $ for all $ a \in \mathcal{A} $. Further, the legitimacy of these hypotheses is eventually demonstrated by examples and at last, an application of Banach algebra is presented.

Brauer-Manin obstructions for homogeneous spaces of commutative affine algebraic groups over global fields

Abstract:Questions related to Brauer-Manin obstructions to the Hasse principle and weak approximation for homogeneous spaces of tori over a number field are well-studied, generally using arithmetic duality theorems, starting with works of Sansuc and of Colliot-Thélène. In this article, we prove the analogous statements (and include obstructions to strong approximation over finite places) in the general case of a commutative affine group scheme $G$ of finite type over a global field in any characteristic. We also study finiteness of different variants of the second Tate-Shafarevich kernel (such as $S$-kernels and $\omega$-kernels) of the Cartier dual of $G$. All this is made possible by some recent theoretical advancements in positive characteristic, namely the finiteness theorems of B. Conrad and the generalized Tate duality of Z. Rosengarten.

Polynomials represented by norm forms via the beta sieve

Abstract:A central question in Arithmetic geometry is to determine for which polynomials $f \in \mathbb{Z}[t]$ and which number fields $K$ the Hasse principle holds for the affine equation $f(t) = N_{K/\mathbb{Q}}(\boldsymbol{x}) \neq 0$. Whilst extensively studied in the literature, current results are largely limited to polynomials and number fields of low degree. In this paper, we establish the Hasse principle for a wide family of polynomials and number fields, including polynomials that are products of arbitrarily many linear, quadratic or cubic factors. The proof generalises an argument of Irving, which makes use of the beta sieve of Rosser and Iwaniec. As a further application of our sieve results, we prove new cases of a conjecture of Harpaz and Wittenberg on locally split values of polynomials over number fields, and discuss consequences for rational points in fibrations.

Just-likely intersections on Hilbert modular surfaces

Abstract:In this paper, we prove an intersection-theoretic result pertaining to curves in certain Hilbert modular surfaces in positive characteristic. Specifically, we show that given two appropriate curves C,D parameterizing abelian surfaces with real multiplication, the set of points (x,y) in the product CxD with surfaces parameterized by x and y isogenous to each other is Zariski dense in C x D, thereby proving a case of a just-likely intersection conjecture. We also compute the change in Faltings height under appropriate p-power isogenies of abelian surfaces with real multiplication over characteristic p global fields.

Hasse principle for Kummer varieties in the case of generic 2-torsion

Abstract:Conditional on finiteness of relevant Shafarevich--Tate groups, Harpaz and Skorobogatov used Swinnerton-Dyer's descent-fibration method to establish the Hasse principle for Kummer varieties associated to a 2-covering of a principally polarised abelian variety under certain largeness assumptions on its mod 2 Galois image. Their method breaks down however when the Galois image is maximal, due to the possible failure of the Shafarevich--Tate group of quadratic twists of A to have square order. In this work we overcome this obstruction by combining second descent ideas in the spirit of Harpaz and Smith with results on the parity of 2-infinity Selmer ranks in quadratic twist families. This allows Swinnerton-Dyer's method to be successfully applied to K3 surfaces arising as quotients of 2-coverings of Jacobians of genus 2 curves with no rational Weierstrass points.

An Improvement of the Hasse-Weil Bound for Artin-Schreier Curves Via Cyclotomic Function Fields

Abstract:The corresponding Hasse-Weil bound was a major breakthrough in history of mathematics. It has found many applications in mathematics, coding theory and theoretical computer science. In general, the Hasse-Weil bound is tight and cannot be improved. However, the Hasse-Weil bound is no longer tight when it is applied to some specific classes of curves. One of the examples where the Hasse-Weil bound is not tight is the family of Artin-Schreier curves. Due to various applications of Artin-Schreier curves to coding, cryptography and theoretical computer science, researchers have made great effort to improve the Hasse-Weil bound for Artin-Schreier curves. In this paper, we focus on the number of rational places of the Artin-Schreier curve defined by $y^p-y=f(x)$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of characteristic $p$, where $f(x)$ is a polynomial in $\mathbb{F}_q[x]$. Our road map for attacking this problem works as follows. We first show that the function field $E_f:=\mathbb{F}_q(x,y)$ of the Artin-Schreier curve $y^p-y=f(x)$ is a subfield of some cyclotomic function field. We then make use of the class field theory to prove that the number of points of the curve is upper bounded by a function of a minimum distance of a linear code. By analyzing the minimum distance of this linear code, we can improve the Hasse-Weil bound and Serre bound for Artin-Schreier curves.

Abstract:We give a new proof the arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel theorem by using classical reductions in the theory of coherent sheaves, a direct proof in the case of the projective space and the conservation of some numerical invariants, called arithmetic Hilbert invariants, through the deformation to the projective completion of the cone. This construction lies at the intersection of deformation theory and Arakelov geometry. It provides a deformation of a Hermitian line bundle over the deformation to the normal cone.

Control Theorems for Hilbert Modular Varieties

Abstract:We prove an exact control theorem, in the sense of Hida theory, for the ordinary part of the middle degree étale cohomology of certain Hilbert modular varieties, after localizing at a suitable maximal ideal of the Hecke algebra. Our method of proof builds upon the techniques introduced by Loeffler-Rockwood-Zerbes; another important ingredient in our proof is the recent work of Caraiani-Tamiozzo on the vanishing of the étale cohomology of Hilbert modular varieties with torsion coefficients outside the middle degree. This work will be used in forthcoming work of the author to show that the Asai-Flach Euler system corresponding to a quadratic Hilbert modular form varies in Hida families.

Abstract:In this article, we study a certain Galois property of subextensions of k(Ators) , the minimal field of definition of all torsion points of an abelian variety A defined over a number field k . Concretely, we show that each subfield of k(Ators) that is Galois over k (of possibly infinite degree) and whose Galois group has finite exponent is contained in an abelian extension of some finite extension of k . As an immediate corollary of this result and a theorem of Bombieri and Zannier, we deduce that each such field has the Northcott property, that is, does not contain any infinite set of algebraic numbers of bounded height.
