Abstract:As an application of P. Delgine's theorem (Esnault and Kerz in Acta Math. Vietnam. 37:531-562, 2012) on a finiteness of $l$-adic sheaves on a variety over a finite field, we show the finiteness of étale coverings of such a variety with given degree whose ramification bounded along an effective Cartier divisor. This can be thought of a higher dimensional analogue of the classical Hermite-Minkowski theorem.

Abstract:For varieties over global fields, weak approximation in the space of adelic points can fail. For a subvariety of an abelian variety one expects this failure is always explained by a finite descent obstruction, in the sense that the rational points should be dense in the set of (modified) adelic points surviving finite descent. We show that this follows from the a priori weaker assumption that finite descent is the only obstruction to the existence of rational points. We also prove a similar statement for the obstruction coming from the Mordell-Weil sieve.

Abstract:Let $C$ and $D$ be smooth, proper and geometrically integral curves over a finite field $F$. Any morphism from $D$ to $C$ induces a morphism of their étale fundamental groups. The anabelian philosophy proposed by Grothendieck suggests that, when $C$ has genus at least $2$, all open homomorphisms between the étale fundamental groups should arise in this way from a nonconstant morphism of curves. We relate this expectation to the arithmetic of the curve $C_K$ over the global function field $K = F(D)$. Specifically, we show that there is a bijection between the set of conjugacy classes of well-behaved morphism of fundamental groups and locally constant adelic points of $C_K$ that survive étale descent. We use this to provide further evidence for the anabelian conjecture by relating it to another recent conjecture by Sutherland and the second author.

Generalizations of noncommutative Noether's problem

Abstract:Noether's problem is classical and very important problem in algebra. It is an intrinsically interesting problem in invariant theory, but with far reaching applications in the sutdy of moduli spaces, PI-algebras, and the Inverse problem of Galois theory, among others. To obtain an noncommutative analogue of Noether's problem, one would need a significant skew field that shares a role similar to the field of ratioal functions. Given the importance of the Weyl fields due to Gelfand-Kirillov's Conjecture, in 2006 J. Alev and F. Dumas introduced what is nowdays called the noncommutative Noether's problem. Many papers in recent years \cite{FMO}, \cite{EFOS}, \cite{FS}, \cite{Tikaradze} have been dedicated to the subject. The aim of this article is to generalize the main result of \cite{FS} for more general versions of Noether's problem; and consider its analogue in prime characteristic.

A generalization of Bring's curve in any characteristic

Abstract:Let $p\ge 7$ be a prime, and $m\ge 5$ an integer. A natural generalization of Bring's curve valid over any field $\mathbb{K}$ of zero characteristic or positive characteristic $p$, is the algebraic variety $V$ of $\textrm{PG}(m-1,\mathbb{K})$ which is the complete intersection of the projective algebraic hypersurfaces of homogeneous equations $x_1^k+\cdots +x_m^{k}=0$ with $1\leq k\leq m-2$. In positive characteristic, we also assume $m\le p-1$. Up to a change of coordinates in $\textrm{PG}(m-1,\mathbb{K})$, we show that $V$ is a projective, absolutely irreducible, non-singular curve of $\textrm{PG}(m-2,\mathbb{K})$ with degree $(m-2)!$, genus $\mathfrak{g}= \frac{1}{4} ((m-2)(m-3)-4)(m-2)!+1$, and tame automorphism group $G$ isomorphic to $\textrm{Sym}_m$. We compute the genera of the quotient curves of $V$ with respect to the stabilizers of one or more coordinates under the action of $G$. In positive characteristic, the two extremal cases, $m=5$ and $m=p-1$ are investigated further. For $m=5$, we show that there exist infinitely many primes $p$ such that $V$ is $\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$-maximal curve of genus $4$. The smallest such primes are $29,59,149,239,839$. For $m=p-1$ we prove that $V$ has as many as $(p-2)!$ points over $\mathbb{F}_p$ and has no further points over $\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$. We also point out a connection with previous work of Rédei about the famous Minkowski conjecture proven by Hajós (1941), as well as with a more recent result of Rodríguez Villegas, Voloch and Zagier (2001) on plane curves attaining the Stöhr-Voloch bound, and the regular sequence problem for systems of diagonal equations introduced by Conca, Krattenthaler and Watanabe (2009).

An analogue of a conjecture of Rasmussen and Tamagawa for abelian varieties over function fields

Abstract:Let $L$ be a number field and let $\ell$ be a prime number. Rasmussen and Tamagawa conjectured, in a precise sense, that abelian varieties whose field of definition of the $\ell$-power torsion is both a pro-$\ell$ extension of $L(\mu_\ell)$ and unramified away from $\ell$ are quite rare. In this paper, we formulate an analogue of the Rasmussen--Tamagawa conjecture for non-isotrivial abelian varieties defined over function fields. We provide a proof of our analogue in the case of elliptic curves. In higher dimensions, when the base field is a subfield of the complex numbers, we show that our conjecture is a consequence of the uniform geometric torsion conjecture. Finally, using a theorem of Bakker and Tsimerman we also prove our conjecture unconditionally for abelian varieties with real multiplication.

Abstract:Let $A$ be a non-CM simple abelian variety over a number field $K$. For a place $v$ of $K$ such that $A$ has good reduction at $v$, let $F(A,v)$ denote the Frobenius field generated by the corresponding Frobenius eigenvalues. Assuming $A$ has connected monodromy groups, we show that the set of places $v$ such that $F(A,v)$ is isomorphic to a fixed number field has upper Dirichlet density zero. Assuming the GRH, we give a power saving upper bound for the number of such places.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth curve over a finitely generated field $k$, and let $\ell$ be a prime different from the characteristic of $k$. We analyze the dynamics of the Galois action on the deformation rings of mod $\ell$ representations of the geometric fundamental group of $X$. Using this analysis, we prove analogues of the Shafarevich and Fontaine-Mazur finiteness conjectures for function fields over algebraically closed fields in arbitrary characteristic, and a weak variant of the Frey-Mazur conjecture for function fields in characteristic zero. For example, we show that if $X$ is a normal, connected variety over $\mathbb{C}$, the (typically infinite) set of representations of $\pi_1(X^{\text{an}})$ into $GL_n(\overline{\mathbb{Q}_\ell})$, which come from geometry, has no limit points. As a corollary, we deduce that if $L$ is a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_\ell$, then the set of representations of $\pi_1(X^{\text{an}})$ into $GL_n(L)$, which arise from geometry, is finite.

Abstract:We study the number of rational points of smooth projective curves over finite fields in some relative situations in the spirit of a previous paper from an euclidean point of vue. We prove some kinds of relative Weil bounds, derived from Schwarz inequality for some "relative parts" of the diagonal and of the graph of the Frobenius on some euclidean sub-spaces of the numerical space of the squared curve endowed with the opposite of the intersection product.

Abstract:We study and explicitly construct some families of asymptotically exact sequences of algebraic function fields. It turns out that these families have an asymptotical class number widely greater than the general Lachaud - Martin-Deschamps bounds. We emphasize that we obtain asymptotically exact sequences of algebraic function fields over any finite field $\F_q$, in particular when $q$ is not a square and that these sequences are dense towers.
Realizing Galois representations in abelian varieties by specialization

Abstract:We give some positive answers to the following problem: Given a field $K$ and a continuous Galois representation $\rho:G_K \to GL_n(\mathbf{Q})$, construct an abelian variety $J/K$ of small dimension such that $\rho$ is a sub-representation of the natural $G_K$-representation on $J(\bar{K}) \otimes_{\mathbf{Z}} \mathbf{Q}$. We prove that if $K$ is Hilbertian of characteristic different from $2$, then for any sufficiently large integer $g$ (depending on $\rho$) we can find infinitely many absolutely simple $g$-dimensional abelian varieties which realize $\rho$. We outline also a method of twisting a given symmetric construction of curves with many rational points to instead produce curves with closed points of large degree, and in this context we give a unified treatment of constructions of Mestre--Shioda and Liu--Lorenzini. The main results are obtained by applying a natural generalization of Néron's Specialization Theorem.

Harmonic analysis approach to the relative Riemann-Roch theorem on global fields

Abstract:In this paper we generalize and put in a new light part of ``Fouier analysis on Number fields and Hecke's zeta function''[14] by Tate. We express the relative Euler characteristic using purely adelic language. By using certain natural normalization of Haar measure on adeles we obtain the relative Riemann-Roch theorem. In particular we show that using our relative normalization of the Haar measure on adeles we can obtain the relative Riemann-Roch theorem from the adelic Poisson summation formulae. In addition, using our methods we define the relative 'size of cohomology' numbers, i.e. extract the $h^0$ and $h^1$ part of the relative Euler characteristic. Our theory not only covers both absolute and relative cases, but also the case of an arithmetic curve and a nonsingular, projective curve over a finite field.

Almost ordinary Abelian surfaces over global function fields with application to integral points

Abstract:Let $A$ be a non-isotrivial almost ordinary Abelian surface with possibly bad reductions over a global function field of odd characteristic $p$. Suppose $\Delta$ is an infinite set of positive integers, such that $\left(\frac{m}{p}\right)=1$ for $\forall m\in \Delta$. If $A$ doesn't admit any global real multiplication, we prove the existence of infinitely many places modulo which the reduction of $A$ has endomorphism ring containing $\mathbb{Z}[x]/(x^2-m)$ for some $m\in \Delta$. This generalizes the $S$-integrality conjecture for elliptic curves over number fields, as proved in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math/0509485" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/0509485">arXiv:math/0509485</a>, to the setting of Abelian surfaces over global function fields. As a corollary, we show that there are infinitely many places modulo which $A$ is not simple, generalizing the main result of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1812.11679" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1812.11679">arXiv:1812.11679</a> to the non-ordinary case.

Abstract:Suppose that $F$ is a smooth and connected complex surface (not necessarily compact) containing a smooth rational curve with positive self-intersection. We prove that if there exists a non-constant meromorphic function on $F$, then the field of meromorphic functions on $F$ is isomorphic to the field of rational functions in one or two variables over $\mathbb C$.

Abstract:We establish an adelic version of Dirichlet's approximation theorem on spheres. Let $K$ be a number field, $E$ be a rigid adelic space over $K$ and $q\colon E\to K$ be a quadratic form. Let $v$ be a place of $K$ and $\alpha\in E\otimes_{K}K_{v}$ such that $q(\alpha)=1$. We produce an explicit constant $c$ having the following property. If there exists $x\in E$ such that $q(x)=1$ then, for any $T>c$, there exists $(\upupsilon,\upphi)\in E\times K$, with $\max{(\Vert\upupsilon\Vert_{E,v},\vert\upphi\vert_{v})}\le T$ and $\max{(\Vert\upupsilon\Vert_{E,w},\vert\upphi\vert_{w})}$ controlled for any place $w$, satisfying $q(\upupsilon)=\upphi^{2}\ne 0$ and $\vert q(\alpha\upphi-\upupsilon)\vert_{v}\le c\vert\upphi\vert_{v}/T$. This remains true for some infinite algebraic extensions as well as for a compact set of places of $K$. Our statements generalize and improve on earlier results by Kleinbock \\& Merrill (2015) and Moshchevitin (2017). The proofs rely on the quadratic Siegel's lemma in a rigid adelic space obtained by the author and R{é}mond (2017).

The relative class number one problem for function fields, II

Abstract:We establish that any finite extension of function fields of genus greater than 1 whose relative class group is trivial is Galois and cyclic. This depends on a result from a preceding paper which establishes a finite list of possible Weil polynomials for both fields. Given this list, we analyze most cases by computing options for the splittings of low-degree places in the extension, then consider the effect of these options on the Weil polynomials of certain isogeny factors of the Jacobian of the Galois closure. In one case, we use instead an analysis based on principal polarizations, modeled on an argument of Howe.

On generalized deformation problems

Abstract:Let $(R,m)$ be a Noetherian local ring and $I$ an ideal with finite projective dimension. If $R/I$ satisfies some property $\mathcal{P}$, it is natural to ask whether $R$ would also satisfy this property $\mathcal{P}$. This is called the generalized deformation problem. In this paper we discuss some properties that would satisfy this problem. There are two main parts for this paper. In the first part we focus on F-singularities of characteristic $p$. We show that F-injective satisfies this problem for the Cohen-Macaulay ring case and F-rational satisfies this problem for the excellent ring case. In the second part there is no restriction on the characteristic of $R$, we show that when $R$ is catenary and equidimensional with $I$ perfect, then the Serre's Condition $R_k$ would satisfy the problem. And the Serre's Condition $S_k$, $R_k+S_{k+1}$, normal rings, reduced rings and domains would always satisfy this problem.

A note on the inverse problem for finite differential Galois groups

Abstract:In this paper we revisit the following inverse problem: given a curve invariant under an irreducible finite linear algebraic group, can we construct an ordinary linear differential equation whose Schwarz map parametrizes it? We present an algorithmic solution to this problem under the assumption that we are given the function field of the quotient curve. The result provides a generalization and an efficient implementation of the solution to the inverse problem exposed by M. van der Put, C. Sanabria and J.Top [19]. As an application, we show that there is no hypergeometric equation with differential Galois group isomorphic to $H_{72}^{SL_3}$, thus completing Beuker and Heckman's answer [4] to the question of which irreducible finite subgroup of $SL_3(\mathbb{C})$ are the monodromy of a hypergeometric equation.

Abstract: In this paper we study various aspects of the Ekedahl-Serre problem. We formulate questions of Ekedahl-Serre type and Coleman-Oort type for general weakly special subvarieties in the Siegel moduli space, propose a conjecture relating these two questions, and provide examples supporting these questions. The main new result is an upper bound of genera for curves over number fields whose Jacobians are isogeneous to products of elliptic curves satisfying the Sato-Tate equidistribution, and we also refine previous results showing that certain weakly special subvarieties only meet the open Torelli locus in at most finitely many points.
