Abstract:We show that the space of vector-valued Siegel automorphic forms in characteristic $p$ is zero when the weight is outside of an explicit locus. This result is a special case of a general conjecture about Hodge-type Shimura varieties formulated in previous work with W. Goldring.

Abstract:We prove that the effective cone of automorphic vector bundles on the Siegel modular variety of rank $n$ in characteristic $p$ at a place of good reduction is encoded by the stack of $G$-zips of Pink--Wedhorn--Ziegler. Specifically, we show that the degree zero cohomology groups of automorphic vector bundles always vanish outside of the zip cone. This result is a special case of a general conjecture formulated by the Goldring and the author for all Hodge-type Shimura varieties of good reduction. In the case $n=3$, we give explicit conditions for the vanishing of the $0$-th cohomology group. Finally, in the course of the proof we define the notion of automorphic forms of trivial-type and study their properties.

Abstract:We construct a generalized Witten genus for spin$^c$ manifolds, which takes values in level 1 modular forms with integral Fourier expansion on a class of spin$^c$ manifolds called string$^c$ manifolds. We also construct a mod 2 analogue of the Witten genus for $8k+2$ dimensional spin manifolds. The Landweber-Stong type vanishing theorems are proven for the generalized Witten genus and the mod 2 Witten genus on string$^c$ and string (generalized) complete intersections in (product of) complex projective spaces respectively.

Abstract:We construct a mod 2 analogue of the Witten genus for 8k+2 dimensional spin manifolds, as well as modular characteristic numbers for a class of spinc manifolds which we call stringc manifolds. When these spinc manifolds are actually spin, one recovers the original Witten genus on string manifolds. These genera vanish on string and stringc complete intersections respectively in complex projective spaces.

Abstract: Determination of quasi-invariant generalized functions is important for a variety of problems in representation theory, notably character theory and restriction problems. In this note, we review some new and easy-to-use techniques to show vanishing of quasi-invariant generalized functions, developed in the recent work of the authors (Uniqueness of Ginzburg-Rallis models: the Archimedean case, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 363, (2011), 2763-2802). The first two techniques involve geometric notions attached to submanifolds, which we call metrical properness and unipotent $\chi$-incompatibility. The third one is analytic in nature, and it arises from the first occurrence phenomenon in Howe correspondence. We also highlight how these techniques quickly lead to two well-known uniqueness results, on trilinear forms and Whittaker models.

Abstract:It is well-known that the classical Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem [C] can be interpreted as an index theorem for de Rham-Hodge operators (cf. [BGV] and [LM]) and that it is nontrivial only for even dimensional manifolds. This paper arose from an attempt to search an odd dimensional analogue of this index theorem. Recall that the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem is closely related to the famous Poincare-Hopf index formula expressing the Euler number as the sum of indices of singularities of a tangent vector field. Now for odd dimensional manifolds, or more generally for manifolds with vanishing Euler number, we take the advantage that another result of Hopf asserts that there always exist nowhere zero vector fields (see e.g. Steenrod [S]). Thus let M be an odd dimensional oriented closed manifold and let V be a nowhere zero vector field on M . Let γ be the one dimensional oriented vector bundle over M generated by V . Then TM/γ carries a canonically induced orientation. Let e(TM/γ) be the Euler class of TM/γ. For any integral element ω in H1(M,Q), we will take 〈ωe(TM/γ), [M ]〉 as our substitute for the Euler class appeared in the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem. The main result of this paper gives an analytic formula for this number as the index of certain elliptic Toeplitz operators. In fact, a general odd index theory has already been developed by BaumDouglas [BD] who pointed out that the associated index can be computed

Abstract:In this paper, we show the nonvanishing of some Hecke characters on cyclotomic fields. The main ingredient of this paper is a computation of eigenfunctions and the action of Weil representation at some primes including the primes above $2$. As an application, we show that for each isogeny factor of the Jacobian of the $p$-th Fermat curve where $2$ is a quadratic residue modulo $p$, there are infinitely many twists whose analytic rank is zero. Also, for a certain hyperelliptic curve over the $11$-th cyclotomic field whose Jacobian has complex multiplication, there are infinitely many twists whose analytic rank is zero.

On the Real Zeroes of Half-integral Weight Hecke Cusp Forms

Abstract:We examine the distribution of zeroes of half-integral weight Hecke cusp forms on the manifold $\Gamma_0(4)\backslash\mathbb H$ near a cusp at infinity. In analogue of the Ghosh-Sarnak conjecture for classical holomorphic Hecke cusp forms, one expects that almost all of the zeroes sufficiently close to this cusp lie on two vertical geodesics $\Re(s)=-1/2$ and $\Re(s)=0$ as the weight tends to infinity. We show that, for $\gg_\varepsilon K^2/(\log K)^{3/2+\varepsilon}$ of the half-integral weight Hecke cusp forms in the Kohnen plus subspace with weight bounded by a large constant $K$, the number of such "real" zeroes grows almost at the expected rate. We also obtain a weaker lower bound for the number of real zeroes that holds for a positive proportion of forms. One of the key ingredients is the asymptotic evaluation of averaged first and second moments of quadratic twists of modular $L$-functions.

A vanishing theorem in Siefring's intersection theory

Abstract:In 2009, R. Siefring introduced a homotopy-invariant generalized intersection number and singularity index for punctured pseudoholomorphic curves, by adding contributions from curve's asymptotic behavior to the standard intersection number and singularity index. In this article, we provide a stratification of the moduli space that describes the rate of asymptotic convergence of the pseudoholomorphic curves. Using this stratification, we provide a more intricate characterization of the curves for which these added contribution to the intersection number and singularity index vanishes. In doing so, we prove that the asymptotic contribution to intersection number and singularity index vanishes under generic perturbations. This means that in generic situations we only need to consider the usual intersections of the curves.

Abstract:The paper uses Iwasawa theory at the prime p=2 to prove non‐vanishing theorems for the value at s=1 of the complex L ‐series of certain quadratic twists of the Gross family of elliptic curves with complex multiplication by the field K=Q(−q) , where q is any prime ≡7mod8 . Our results establish some broad generalizations of the non‐vanishing theorem first proven by Rohrlich using complex analytic methods. Such non‐vanishing theorems are important because it is known that they imply the finiteness of the Mordell–Weil group and the Tate–Shafarevich group of the corresponding elliptic curves over the Hilbert class field of K . It is essential for the proofs to study the Iwasawa theory of the higher dimensional abelian variety with complex multiplication which is obtained by taking the restriction of scalars to K of the particular elliptic curve with complex multiplication introduced by Gross.

Abstract:Our main theorem describes the degree 0 cohomology of Igusa varieties in terms of one-dimensional automorphic representations in the setup of mod p Hodge-type Shimura varieties with hyperspecial level at p, mirroring the well known analogue for complex Shimura varieties. As an application, we obtain a completely new approach to two geometric questions. (See Sect. 1.5 for a comparison with independent results by van Hoften and Xiao via a different approach.) Firstly, we verify the discrete part of the Hecke orbit conjecture, which amounts to irreducibility of central leaves, generalizing preceding works by Chai, Oort, Yu, et al. Secondly, we deduce irreducibility of Igusa towers and its generalization to non-basic Igusa varieties in the same generality, extending previous results by Igusa, Ribet, Faltings--Chai, Hida, and others. Our proof is based on a Langlands--Kottwitz-type formula for Igusa varieties due to Mack-Crane, an asymptotic study of the trace formula, and an estimate for unitary representations and their Jacquet modules in representation theory of $p$-adic groups due to Howe--Moore and Casselman.

Non-vanishing of geodesic periods of automorphic forms

Abstract:We prove that one hundred percent of closed geodesic periods of a Maaß form for the modular group are non-vanishing when ordered by length. We present applications to the non-vanishing of central values of Rankin--Selberg $L$-functions. Similar results for holomorphic forms for general Fuchsian groups of the first kind with a cusp are also obtained, as well as results towards normal distribution.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime. We study the structure of the cyclotomic Greenberg-Selmer group attached to a general irreducible Artin motive over $\mathbb{Q}$ endowed with an ordinary $p$-stabilization. Under the Leopoldt and the weak $p$-adic Schanuel Conjectures, we show that it is of torsion over the Iwasawa algebra. Under mild hypotheses on $p$ we compute the constant term of its characteristic series in terms of a $p$-adic regulator and we highlight an extra zeros phenomenon. We then focus on Artin motives attached to classical weight one modular forms, to which our preceding results apply unconditionally. We formulate an Iwasawa Main Conjecture in this context and prove one divisibility using a Theorem of Kato.

Abstract:We solve a problem in enumerative combinatorics which is equivalent to counting topological types of certain group actions on compact Riemann surfaces. Let $V_2(F_p)$ be the two-dimensional vector space over $F_p$, the field with $p$ elements, $p$ an odd prime. We count orbits of the general linear group $GL_2(F_p)$ on certain multisets consisting of $R \geq 3$ non-zero columns from $V_2(F_p)$. The $R$-multisets are `zero-sum,' that is, the sum (mod $p$) over the columns in the multiset is $[\begin{smallmatrix} 0 \\ 0 \end{smallmatrix}]$. The orbit count yields the number of topological types of fully ramified actions of the elementary abelian $p$-group of rank $2$ on compact Riemann surfaces of genus $1+ Rp(p-1)/2-p^2.$

Abstract:Abstract We formulate and prove a version of the arithmetic Siegel–Weil formula for (zero dimensional) Shimura varieties attached to tori, equipped with some additional data. More precisely, we define a family of “special” divisors in terms of Green functions at archimedean and non-archimedean places and prove that their degrees coincide with the Fourier coefficients of the central derivative of an Eisenstein series. The proof relies on the usual Siegel–Weil formula to provide a direct link between both sides of the identity, and in some sense, offers a more conceptual point of view on prior results in the literature.

Abstract:We study the weight part of Serre's conjecture for generic $n$-dimensional mod $p$ Galois representations. We first generalize Herzig's conjecture to the case where the field is ramified at $p$ and prove the weight elimination direction of our conjecture. We then introduce a new class of weights associated to $n$-dimensional local mod $p$ representations which we call \emph{extremal weights}. Using a ``Levi reduction" property of certain potentially crystalline Galois deformation spaces, we prove the modularity of these weights. As a consequence, we deduce the weight part of Serre's conjecture for unit groups of some division algebras in generic situations.

Abstract:Let p and q be two distinct odd primes. Let K be an imaginary quadratic field over which p and q are both split. Let Ψ be a Hecke character over K of infinity type ( k , j ) with 0 ≤ − j < k . Under certain technical hypotheses, we show that for a Zariski dense set of finite-order characters κ over K which factor through the -extension of K , the p -adic valuation of the algebraic part of the L -value is a constant independent of κ . In addition, when j = 0 and certain technical hypothesis holds, this constant is zero.

Non-commutative Iwasawa theory of abelian varieties over global function fields

Abstract:Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a global function field $F$. We investigate the structure of the $p$-primary Selmer group $\mathrm{Sel}(A/F_\infty)$ for any prime number $p$ distinct from the characteristic of $F$, over $p$-adic Lie extensions $F_\infty$ of $F$ which contain the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension $F^{\mathrm{cyc}}$. In particular, we prove that the Pontryagin dual of the Selmer group $\mathrm{Sel}(A/F^\mathrm{cyc})$ is a torsion $\mathbb{Z}_p[[\mathrm{Gal}(F^\mathrm{cyc}/F)]]$-module with trivial $\mu$-invariant, and we establish the $\mathfrak{M}_H(G)$-conjecture of Coates-Fukaya-Kato-Sujatha-Venjakob for $A/F_\infty$. In view of the validity of the $\mathfrak{M}_H(G)$-conjecture, it therefore makes sense to speak of the characteristic element (in the sense of Coates et al.) attached to the Pontryagin dual of $\mathrm{Sel}(A/F_\infty)$. We relate the order of vanishing of the characteristic elements, evaluated at Artin representations, to the corank of the Selmer group of the corresponding twist of $A$ over the base field $F$. Combining this with the deep results of Tate, Milne and Kato-Trihan, we show that the order of vanishing of the characteristic elements is equal to the order of vanishing of the $L$-function of $A/F$ at $s=1$ under appropriate assumptions. Finally, we relate the generalised Euler characteristic of $\mathrm{Sel}(A/F_\infty)$ to the Euler characteristic of $\mathrm{Sel}(A/F^{\mathrm{cyc}})$. This is a natural analogue of Zerbes' result in the number field context and generalises previous results of Sechi and Valentino in the function field context.
