Abstract:In this paper we discuss limitions appearing while using Boolean Logic in Non-Constructive Mathematics (NCM) as a mathematical foundation for Quantum Mechanics. These limitations naturally vanish using Constructive Mathematics (CM) and Topos Theory which is one of its models. The line of reasoning is in agreement with recent theoretical work on Quantum Logic, and focusses on the pivotal role of the excluded middle law, and this will be addressed in more detail in our discussion.

Abstract:The methodology used here might provide a neat method of examining paradoxes and ways to circumvent them. Most of the known set theoretic paradoxes (Russell's, Cantor's, Burali-Forti's,..) can be paralleled here and examined. This account will shed the light on a particular application of this method that appears to elude paradoxes; an application that have shortcomings that will be illustrated here and suggestions to solutions are proposed. First I'll present the exposition of the theory, and then speak about its background and the aims behind it and how it can extend our knowledge of overcoming paradoxes.

Abstract:In this paper, we argue that while the concept of a set-theoretic paradox (or paradoxical set) can be relatively well-defined in a formal setting, the concept of a set-theoretic hypodox (or hypodoxical set) remains unclear--particularly if the self-membership assertion of the co-Russell set, $\{x:x\in x\}$, is classified as hypodoxical, whereas other set-theoretic sentences with no evident connection to paradoxes are not. Furthermore, we demonstrate how a contradiction can be derived in Na\"ıve Set Theory using the unique properties of the co-Russell set, relying on the Fixed Point Theorem of Na\"ıve Set Theory.

Abstract:Two types of approximation to the paradoxical Russell Set are presented, one approximating it from below, one from above. It is shown that any lower approximation gives rise to a better approximation containing it, and that any upper approximation contains a distinct better approximation. The Russell Paradox is then seen to be the claim that two of these processes of better approximations stop, and at the same set. This suggests that the unrestricted Axiom of Comprehension is, not a coherent intuition worthy of rescue from a mysterious paradox, but simply wishful thinking, a confusion of sets as extensional objects with classes defined by a property.

Enriched structure-semantics adjunctions and monad-theory equivalences for subcategories of arities

Abstract:Lawvere's algebraic theories, or Lawvere theories, underpin a categorical approach to general algebra, and Lawvere's adjunction between semantics and algebraic structure leads to an equivalence between Lawvere theories and finitary monads on the category of sets. Several authors have transported these ideas to a variety of settings, including contexts of category theory enriched in a symmetric monoidal closed category. In this paper, we develop a general axiomatic framework for enriched structure-semantics adjunctions and monad-theory equivalences for subcategories of arities. Not only do we establish a simultaneous generalization of the monad-theory equivalences previously developed in the settings of Lawvere (1963), Linton (1966), Dubuc (1970), Borceux-Day (1980), Power (1999), Nishizawa-Power (2009), Lack-Rosický (2011), Lucyshyn-Wright (2016), and Bourke-Garner (2019), but also we establish a structure-semantics theorem that generalizes those given in the first four of these works while applying also to the remaining five, for which such a result has not previously been developed. Furthermore, we employ our axiomatic framework to establish broad new classes of examples of enriched monad-theory equivalences and structure-semantics adjunctions for subcategories of arities enriched in locally bounded closed categories, including various convenient closed categories that are relevant in topology and analysis and need not be locally presentable.

Abstract:This work presents theorems which state (i) Z is a proper subset for any bijection f between A and Z, where Z is contained in P(A), A is a non-finite set and |Z|=|A|, and (ii) being Z a proper subset of P(A) nothing affirms or denies that |P(A)|>|A|. Russell's paradox is examined and it is shown that the set of all the ordinary sets does not exist. A mistake in Cantor's proof on cardinality of power sets is shown.

What principles does one need to add to the laws of Boolean algebra to reason not only about intersection, union, and complementation of sets, but also about the relative size of sets? Abstract:We analyze the Brandenburger-Keisler paradox in epistemic game theory, which is a `two-person version of Russell's paradox'. Our aim is to understand how it relates to standard one-person arguments, and why the `believes-assumes' modality used in the argument arises. We recast it as a fixpoint result, which can be carried out in any regular category, and show how it can be reduced to a relational form of the one-person diagonal argument due to Lawvere. We give a compositional account, which leads to simple multi-agent generalizations. We also outline a general approach to the construction of assumption complete models.

Abstract:In a previous article we endeavored to deal with a paradox which seems to arise in Leibnizian philosophy.1 Substances or monads are conceived by Leibniz to be totally self-contained and self-sufficient: they cannot act upon one another nor receive any influence from without. Every monad is confined to living in its own states which, all of them, arise only and exclusively from its own grounds. On the other hand, the Leibnizian philosophy contains a great many statements concerning the totality of monads. Every monad represents the entire universe from its particular “point of view.” Hence the states and modifications of all monads or substances stand in the ideal relation of mutual correlation and correspondence. Between all substances and monads prevails the principle of the “universal harmony” which manifests itself in the just mentioned thoroughgoing correspondence.

Abstract:Ernst Zermelo's axiomatization of set theory (1908) did not exclude `a set that is a member of itself'. We call a set that is a member of itself `an individual'. In this article we prove the elimination of Russell's paradox is equivalent to "For every set S, an individual is a member of S or a set (but not an individual) is not a member of S". This shows there is place is set theory for individuals. We give individuals the place they deserve according to formal logic.

Abstract:Paracomplete logic P1 is a logic system allowing a proposition and its negation to be false at the same time, i.e., the general law of excluded middle in this logic system would be futile. Based on the standard grammar and syntax, this paper explains the logic implication of paracomplete negation, an?alyzes the logic syntactic characteristics, testifies the decidability of paracomplete logic quasi matrix with specific lining method, demonstrates the futility of general law of excluded middle in P 1 with quasi matrix method, analyzes the logic mechanism of paracomplete logic P 1 ’ s tolerance on logic paradox, and thus compares paraconsistent logic C1 and P1 on their tolerant ability.

Abstract:Although the categorical arithmetic is not effectively axiomatizable, the belief that the incompleteness Theorems can be apply to it is fairly common. Furthermore, the so-called "essential" (or "inherent") semantic incompleteness of the second-order Logic that can be deduced by these same Theorems does not imply the standard semantic incompleteness that can be derived using the Loewenheim-Skolem or the compactness Theorem. This state of affairs has its origins in an incorrect and misinterpreted Goedel's comment at the Koenigsberg congress of 1930 and has consolidated due to different circumstances. This paper aims to clear up these questions and proposes an alternative interpretation for the Goedel's statement.

Modest Sets are Equivalent to PERs

Abstract:The aim of this article is to give an expository account of the equivalence between modest sets and partial equivalence relations. Our proof is entirely self-contained in that we do not assume any knowledge of categorical realizability. At the heart of the equivalence lies the subquotient construction on a partial equivalence relation. The subquotient construction embeds the category of partial equivalence relations into the category of modest sets. We show that this embedding is a split essentially surjective functor, and thereby, an equivalence of categories. Our development is both constructive and predicative, and employs the language of homotopy type theory. All the mathematics presented in this article has been mechanised in Cubical Agda.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a novel abstract description of Szabo's polycategories. We use the theory of double clubs -- a generalisation of Kelly's theory of clubs to `pseudo' (or `weak') double categories -- to construct a pseudo-distributive law of the free symmetric strict monoidal category pseudocomonad on Mod over itself qua pseudomonad, and show that monads in the `two-sided Kleisli bicategory' of this pseudo-distributive law are precisely symmetric polycategories.

Abstract:Even though the strong relationship between proof-theoretic and model-theoretic notions in one's logical theory can be shown by soundness and completeness proofs, whether we can define the model-theoretic notions by means of the inferences in a proof system is not at all trivial. For instance, provable inferences in a proof system of classical logic in the logical framework SET-FMLA do not determine its intended models as shown by Carnap (Formalization of logic, Harvard University Press, Cambridge, 1943), i.e., there are non-Boolean models that satisfy its provable inferences. In the literature, this is known as the Categoricity problem or Carnap's problem . In this paper, we will discuss the Categoricity problem (or Carnap's problem) for three-valued logics K3 and LP. We will provide three different restrictions on admissible models that will deliver us categoricity results, some of which draw from the solutions provided for the Categoricity problem for classical logic in Belnap and Massey (Stud Log 49(1):67–82, 1990) and Bonnay and Westerståhl (Erkenntis 81(4):721–739, 2016). We will then argue that two of those solutions are philosophically well-motivated: (1) restricting the admissible models where negation is interpreted as a Strong Kleene truth-function, and (2) restricting the admissible models where a complex formula is assigned the third value when its immediate subformulas are assigned the third value.

Abstract:In this article, I discuss certain aspects of Frege’s paradigms of second-order abstraction principles, Hume’s Principle and Basic Law V, with special emphasis on the latter. I begin by arguing that, contrary to a widespread view, Frege did not express any dissatisfaction with Basic Law V before 1902. In particular, he did not raise any doubt about its assumed logical nature. I then show why Frege nonetheless fails to justify Basic Law V as a primitive logical truth along the lines of the semantic justification that he provides for the other axioms of his system. In subsequent sections, I argue (a) that Frege could not have chosen Hume’s Principle as a logical axiom, neither before 1902 nor after 1902; (b) that even if in the wake of Russell’s Paradox Frege had accepted Hume’s Principle as a logical axiom, such an axiom could not have replaced Basic Law V which was designed to introduce logical objects of a fundamental and irreducible kind and to afford us the right cognitive access to them; (c) that Frege most likely held that the two sides of Basic Law V express different thoughts; (d) that for Basic Law V or for any other Fregean abstraction principle that is laid down as an axiom of a theory, the case in which both real epistemic value and self-evidence are given their due is ruled out. I make a proposal as to how Frege might have escaped this epistemic dilemma.

Abstract:A Finite Element model of the face soft tissue is proposed to simulate the morphological outcomes of maxillofacial surgery. Three modelling options are implemented: a linear elastic model with small and large deformation hypothesis, and an hyperelastic Mooney-Rivlin model. An evaluation procedure based on a qualitative and quantitative comparison of the simulations with a post-operative CT scan is detailed. It is then applied to one clinical case to evaluate the differences between the three models, and with the actual patient morphology. First results shows in particular that for a "simple" clinical procedure where stress is less than 20%, a linear model seams sufficient for a correct modelling.

Abstract:We observe that the notion of two sets being equal up to finitely many elements is a homotopy equivalence relation in a model category, and suggest a homotopy-invariant variant of Generalised Continuum Hypothesis about which more can be proven within ZFC and which first appeared in PCF theory. The formalism allows to draw analogies between notions of set theory and those of homotopy theory, and we indeed observe a similarity between homotopy theory ideology/yoga and that of PCF theory. We also briefly discuss conjectural connections with model theory and arithmetics and geometry.
