Abstract:We assign a new polynomial to any checkerboard-colorable 4-valent virtual graph in terms of its Euler circuit expansion. This provides a new combinatorial formulation of the Kauffman-Jones polynomial for checkerboard-colorable virtual links.

Abstract:In this paper we give two new criteria of detecting the checkerboard colorability of virtual links by using odd writhe and arrow polynomial of virtual links, respectively. By applying new criteria, we prove that 6 virtual knots are not checkerboard colorable, leaving only one virtual knot whose checkerboard colorability is unknown among all virtual knots up to four classical crossings.

Abstract:The Kauffman-Vogel polynomials are three variable polynomial invariants of $4$-valent rigid vertex graphs. A one-variable specialization of the Kauffman-Vogel polynomials for unoriented $4$-valent rigid vertex graphs was given by using the Kauffman bracket and the Jones-Wenzl idempotent colored with $2$. Bataineh, Elhamdadi and Hajij generalized it to any color with even positive integers. We give another generalization of the one-variable Kauffman-Vogel polynomial for oriented and unoriented $4$-valent rigid vertex graphs by using the $A_2$ bracket and the $A_2$ clasps. These polynomial invariants are considered as the $\mathfrak{sl}_3$ colored Jones polynomials for singular knots and links.

Abstract:For classical knots, it is well known that their determinants mod $8$ are classified by the Arf invariant. Boden and Karimi introduced a determinant of checkerboard colorable virtual knots. We prove that their determinant mod $8$ is classified by the coefficient of $z^2$ in the ascending polynomial which is an extension of the Conway polynomial for classical knots.

Abstract:Every graph G=(V, E) considered in this paper consists of a finite set V of vertices and a finite set E of edges, together with an incidence function that associates each edge e ∈ E of G with an unordered pair of vertices of G which are called the ends of the edge e. A graph is said to be a planar graph if it can be drawn in the plane so that its edges intersect only at their ends. A proper k-vertex-coloring of a graph G=(V, E) is a mapping c : V⟶S (S is a set of k colors) such that no two adjacent vertices are assigned the same colors. The famous Four Color Theorem states that a planar graph has a proper vertex-coloring with four colors. However, the current known proof for the Four Color Theorem is computer assisted. In addition, the correctness of the proof is still lengthy and complicated. In 2010, a simple O(n 2) time algorithm was provided to 4-color a 3-colorable planar graph. In this paper, we give an improved linear-time algorithm to either output a proper 4-coloring of G or conclude that G is not 3-colorable when an arbitrary planar graph G is given. Using this algorithm, we can get the proper 4-colorings of 3-colorable planar graphs, planar graphs with maximum degree at most five, and claw-free planar graphs.

Abstract:A class ${\cal G}$ of graphs is $\chi$-{\em polydet} if ${\cal G}$ has a polynomial binding function $f$ and there is a polynomial time algorithm to determine an $f(\omega(G))$-coloring of $G\in {\cal G}$. Let $P_t$ and $C_t$ denote a path and a cycle on $t$ vertices, respectively. A {\em bull} consists of a triangle with two disjoint pendant edges, a {\em hammer} is obtained by identifying an end of $P_3$ with a vertex of a triangle, a {\em fork$^+$} is obtained from $K_{1, 3}$ by subdividing an edge twice. Let $H$ be a bull or a hammer, and $F$ be a $P_7$ or a fork$^+$. We determine all $(C_3, C_4, F)$-free graphs without clique cutsets and universal cliques, and present a close relation between $(C_4, F, H)$-free graphs and the Petersen graph. As a consequence, we show that the classes of $(C_4, F, H)$-free graphs are $\chi$-polydet with nearly optimal linear binding functions.

Abstract:In this paper we show how to categorify the $n$-color vertex polynomial, which is based upon one of Roger Penrose's formulas for counting the number of $3$-edge colorings of a planar trivalent graph. Using topological quantum field theory (TQFT), we introduce a quantum state system to build a new bigraded theory called the bigraded $n$-color vertex homology. The graded Euler characteristic of this homology is the $n$-color vertex polynomial. We then produce a spectral sequence whose $E_\infty$-page is a filtered theory called filtered $n$-color vertex homology and show that it is generated by certain types of face colorings of ribbon graphs. For $n=2$, we show that the filtered $n$-color vertex homology is generated by face colorings that correspond to perfect matchings. Finally, we introduce and give meaning to what the vertex polynomial counts when $n \geq 2$. This polynomial is a new abstract graph invariant that can be inferred from certain formulas of Penrose.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Computing, Volume 53, Issue 1, Page 111-145, February 2024. This is the first paper in a series whose goal is to give a polynomial-time algorithm for the 4-coloring problem and the 4-precoloring extension problem restricted to the class of graphs with no induced six-vertex path, thus proving a conjecture of Huang. Combined with previously known results, this completes the classification of the complexity of the 4-coloring problem for graphs with a connected forbidden induced subgraph. In this paper we give a polynomial-time algorithm that determines if a special kind of precoloring of a [math]-free graph has a precoloring extension, and constructs such an extension if one exists. Combined with the main result of the second paper of the series, this gives a complete solution to the problem.

An Extended Bracket Polynomial for Virtual Knots and Links

Abstract:This paper defines a new invariant of virtual knots and links that we call the extended bracket polynomial, and denote by <<K>> for a virtual knot or link K. This invariant is a state summation over bracket states of the oriented diagram for K. Each state is reduced to a virtual 4-regular graph in the plane and the polynomial takes values in the module generated by these reduced graphs over the ring Q[A,A^{-1}]. The paper is relatively self-contained, with background information about virtual knots and long virtual knots. We give numerous examples applying the extended bracket, including a new proof of the non-triviality of the Kishino diagram and the flat Kishino diagram and non-classicality of single crossing virtualizations. The paper has a section on the estimation of virtual crossing number using the extended bracket state sum. Examples are given of virtual knots with arbitrary minimal embedding genus and arbitrarily high positive difference between the virtual crossing number and the minimal embedding genus. A simplification of <<K>> is introduced and denoted by A[K]. This simplified extended bracket, the arrow polynomial, is a polynomial in an infinite set of variables. It is quite strong (detecting the flat Kishino diagram for example) and easily computable. The paper contains a description of a computer algorithm for A[K] and uses the arrow polynomial, in conjunction with the extended bracket polynomial to determine the minimum genus surfaces on which some virtual knots can be represented.

Abstract:This is the last part of three episodes to demonstrate a renewal approach for proving the Four Color Theorem without checking by a computer. The first and the second episodes have subtitles: ``RGB-tilings on maximal planar graphs'' and ``R/G/B Kempe chains in an extremum non-4-colorable MPG,'' where R/G/B stand for red, green and blue colors to paint on edges and an MPG stands for a maximal planar graph. We focus on an extremum non-4-colorable MPG $EP$ in the whole paper. In this part we introduce three tools based on RGB-tilings. They are diamond routes, normal and generalized canal lines or rings and $\Sigma$-adjustments. Using these tools, we show a major result of this paper: no four vertices of degree 5 form a diamond in any extremum $EP$.

Abstract:Hassler Whitney's theorem of 1931 reduces the task of finding proper, vertex 4-colorings of triangulations of the 2-sphere to finding such colorings for the class $\mathfrak H$ of triangulations of the 2-sphere that have a Hamiltonian circuit. This has been used by Whitney and others from 1936 to the present to find equivalent reformulations of the 4 Color Theorem (4CT). Recently there has been activity to try to use some of these reformuations to find a shorter proof of the 4CT. Every triangulation in $\mathfrak H$ has a dual graph that is a union of two binary trees with the same number of leaves. Elements of a group known as Thompson's group $F$ are equivalence classes of pairs of binary trees with the same number of leaves. This paper explores this resemblance and finds that some recent reformulations of the 4CT are essentially attempting to color elements of $\mathfrak H$ using expressions of elements of $F$ as words in a certain generating set for $F$. From this, we derive information about not just the colorability of certain elements of $\mathfrak H$, but also about all possible ways to color these elements. Because of this we raise (and answer some) questions about enumeration. We also bring in an extension $E$ of the group $F$ and ask whether certain elements ``parametrize'' the set of all colorings of the elements of $\mathfrak H$ that use all four colors.

Abstract:The Four color problem is closely related to other branches of mathematics and practical applications. More than 20 of its reformulations are known, which connect this problem with problems of algebra, statistical mechanics and planning. And this is also typical for mathematics: the solution to a problem studied out of pure curiosity turns out to be useful in representing real objects and processes that are completely different in nature. Despite the published machine methods for combinatorial proof of the Four color conjecture, there is still no clear description of the mechanism for coloring a planar graph with four colors, its natural essence and its connection with the phenomenon of graph planarity. It is necessary not only to prove (preferably by deductive methods) that any planar graph can be colored with four colors, but also to show how to color it. The paper considers an approach based on the possibility of reducing a maximally flat graph to a regular flat cubic graph with its further coloring. Based on the Tate-Volynsky theorem, the vertices of a maximally flat graph can be colored with four colors, if the edges of its dual cubic graph can be colored with three colors. Considering the properties of a colored cubic graph, it can be shown that the addition of colors obeys the transformation laws of the fourth order Klein group. Using this property, it is possible to create algorithms for coloring planar graphs.

Abstract:We employ a multiscale modeling approach to study the surface structure and composition of a Pd(100) model catalyst in reactive environments. Under gas phase conditions representative of technological CO oxidation (~1 atm, 300-600 K) we find the system on the verge of either stabilizing sub-nanometer thin oxide structures or CO adlayers at the surface. Under steady-state operation this suggests the presence or continuous formation and reduction of oxidic patches at the surface, which could be key to understand the observable catalytic function.

Abstract:Jaeger et al. in 1992 introduced group coloring as the dual concept to group connectivity in graphs. Let $\Gamma$ be an Abelian group, $ f: E(G)\to\Gamma$ and $D$ an orientation of a graph $G$. A vertex coloring $c:V(G)\to\Gamma$ is a $(\Gamma, f)$-coloring if $c(v)-c(u)\ne f(e)$ for each edge $e=uv$, where the corresponding arc $D(e)=(u,v)$ is directed from $u$ to $v$. We introduce the concept of $\alpha$-compatible graphs and define the cycle-assigning polynomial $P(G, \alpha; k)$ at $k$ in terms of $\alpha$-compatible spanning subgraphs, where $\alpha$ is an assigning of $G$ from its cycles to $\{0,1\}$. We prove that the cycle-assigning polynomial $P(G,\alpha;k)$ equals the number of $(\Gamma,f)$-colorings for any Abelian group $\Gamma$ of order $k$ and $f:E(G)\to\Gamma$ such that the assigning $\alpha_{D,f}$ induced by $f$ equals $\alpha$. In particular, $P(G,\alpha;k)$ is the classical chromatic polynomial if $\alpha$ is the zero function. Furthermore, we introduce the concept of $\alpha$-compatible broken cycles and interpret $P(G,\alpha;k)$ in terms of $\alpha$-compatible spanning subgraphs that do not contain $\alpha$-compatible broken cycles. This implies that the absolute value of the coefficient of $k^{r(G)-i}$ in $P(G,\alpha;k)$ equals the number of $\alpha$-compatible spanning subgraphs that have $i$ edges and contain no $\alpha$-compatible broken cycles, which generalizes the Whitney's Broken Cycle Theorem. Based on the combinatorial explanation, we establish a unified order-preserving relation from assignings to cycle-assigning polynomials. Finally, we show that for any loopless graph $G$, the coefficients of the cycle-assigning polynomial $P(G,\alpha;k)$ are nonzero and alternate in sign, and further conjecture that the sequence of absolute values of its coefficients is unimodal and log-concave.
