An Extended Bracket Polynomial for Virtual Knots and Links

Abstract:This paper defines a new invariant of virtual knots and links that we call the extended bracket polynomial, and denote by <<K>> for a virtual knot or link K. This invariant is a state summation over bracket states of the oriented diagram for K. Each state is reduced to a virtual 4-regular graph in the plane and the polynomial takes values in the module generated by these reduced graphs over the ring Q[A,A^{-1}]. The paper is relatively self-contained, with background information about virtual knots and long virtual knots. We give numerous examples applying the extended bracket, including a new proof of the non-triviality of the Kishino diagram and the flat Kishino diagram and non-classicality of single crossing virtualizations. The paper has a section on the estimation of virtual crossing number using the extended bracket state sum. Examples are given of virtual knots with arbitrary minimal embedding genus and arbitrarily high positive difference between the virtual crossing number and the minimal embedding genus. A simplification of <<K>> is introduced and denoted by A[K]. This simplified extended bracket, the arrow polynomial, is a polynomial in an infinite set of variables. It is quite strong (detecting the flat Kishino diagram for example) and easily computable. The paper contains a description of a computer algorithm for A[K] and uses the arrow polynomial, in conjunction with the extended bracket polynomial to determine the minimum genus surfaces on which some virtual knots can be represented.

Abstract:Dye and Kauffman defined surface bracket polynomials for virtual links by use of surface states, and found a relationship between the surface states and the minimal genus of a surface in which a virtual link diagram is realized. They and Miyazawa independently defined a multivariable polynomial invariant of virtual links. This invariant is deeply related to the surface states. In this paper, we introduce the notion of surface pole bracket polynomials for link diagrams in closed surfaces, as a generalization of surface bracket polynomials by Dye and Kauffman. The polynomials induce the invariant of twisted links defined by the author before as a generalization of Dye, Kauffman and Miyazawa's polynomial invariant. Furthermore we discuss a relationship between curves in surface pole states and variables of the polynomial invariant.

Abstract:The virtual skein relation for the Jones polynomial of the virtual link diagram was introduced by N. Kamada, S. Nakabo, and S. Satoh. H. A. Dye, L. H. Kauffman, and Y. Miyazawa introduced multivariable polynomial, an invariant of virtual links, which is a refinement of Jones polynomial. In this paper, we give a skein relation for the multivariable polynomials among positive, negative, and virtual crossings with some restrictions. We apply this relation to study some properties of virtual links obtained by replacing a real crossing by a virtual crossing.

Abstract:This paper gives an alternate definition of the Affine Index Polynomial (called the Wriggle Polynomial) using virtual linking numbers and explores applications of this polynomial. In particular, it proves the Cosmetic Crossing Change Conjecture for odd virtual knots and pure virtual knots. It also demonstrates that the polynomial can detect mutations by positive rotation and proves it cannot detect mutations by positive reflection. Finally it exhibits a pair of mutant knots that can be distinguished by a Type 2 Vassiliev Invariant coming from the polynomial.

Abstract:The notion of chckerboard colorability for virtual links and abstract links is introduced. We study the Jones polynomials of virtual links and abstruct links. It is proved that a certain property of the Jones polynomials of classical links is valid for virtual links which admit checkerboard colorings.

Abstract:We show the $n$ colored Jones polynomials of a highly twisted link approach the Kauffman bracket of an $n$ colored skein element. This is in the sense that the corresponding categorifications of the colored Jones polynomials approach the categorification of the Kauffman bracket of the skein element in a direct limit, as the number of twisting of each twist region tends toward infinity, proving a quantum version of Thurston's hyperbolic Dehn surgery theorem implicit in Rozansky's work, and categorifying a result by Champanerkar-Kofman. In view of the volume conjecture, we compute the asymptotic growth rate of the Kauffman bracket of the limiting skein element at a root of unity and relate it to the volume of regular ideal octahedra that arise naturally from the evaluation of the colored Jones polynomials of the link.

On the AJ bracket for tied links

Abstract:Given a tied link $L$, the invariant $\langle\langle\cdot\rangle\rangle$ generalizes the Kauffman bracket of classical links. However, the analogues of Kauffman states and their relationship to this invariant are not immediately clear. We address this question by defining the Aicardi-Juyumaya states, and show that the contribution of each AJ-state to $\langle\langle\cdot\rangle\rangle$ does not depend on the chosen resolution tree. We also present an algorithm to compute the double bracket of a tied link diagram, and use it to find pairs of examples of (oriented) tied links sharing the same Homflypt polynomial but different tied Jones polynomial.

What we get in the paper is a series of maps from knots in the full torus (thickened torus) to flat-virtual knots. Abstract:For a virtual $n$-link $K$, we define a new virtual link $VD(K)$, which is invariant under virtual equivalence of $K$. The Dehn space of $VD(K)$, which we denote $DD(K)$, therefore has a homotopy type which is an invariant of $K$. We show that the quandle and even the fundamental group of this space are able to detect the virtual trefoil. We also consider applications to higher-dimensional virtual links.

Abstract:The affine index polynomial and the $n$-writhe are invariants of virtual knots which are introduced by Kauffman and by Satoh and Taniguchi independently. They are defined by using indices assigned to each classical crossing, which we call affine indices in this paper. We discuss a relationship between the invariants and generalize them to invariants of virtual links. The invariants for virtual links can be also computed by using cut systems. We also introduce invariants of twisted links by using affine indices.

Abstract:Virtual knot theory is a generalization of knot theory which is based on Gauss chord diagrams and link diagrams on closed oriented surfaces. A twisted knot is a generalization of a virtual knot, which corresponds to a link diagram on a possibly non-orientable surface. In this paper, we discuss an invariant of twisted links which is obtained from the JKSS invariant of virtual links by use of double coverings. We also discuss some properties of double covering diagrams.

Abstract:Both classical and virtual knots arise as formal Gauss diagrams modulo some abstract moves corresponding to Reidemeister moves. If we forget about both over/under crossings structure and writhe numbers of knots modulo the same Reidemeister moves, we get a dramatic simplification of virtual knots, which kills all classical knots. However, many virtual knots survive after this simplification. We construct invariants of these objects and present their applications to minimality problems of virtual knots as well as some questions related to graph-links. One can easily generalize these results for the orientable case and apply them for solving non-invertibility problems. The main idea behind these invariants is some geometrical construction which reduces the general equivalence to the equivalence only modulo Reidemeister - 2 move.

Abstract:The theory of the Kauffman bracket, which describes the Jones polynomial as a sum over closed circles formed by the planar resolution of vertices in a knot diagram, can be straightforwardly lifted from to at arbitrary N – but for a special class of bipartite diagrams made entirely from the antiparallel lock tangle. Many amusing and important knots and links can be described in this way, from twist and double braid knots to the celebrated Kanenobu knots for even parameters – and for all of them the entire HOMFLY polynomials possess planar decomposition. This provides an approach to evaluation of HOMFLY polynomials, which is complementary to the arborescent calculus, and this opens a new direction to homological techniques, parallel to Khovanov–Rozansky generalizations of the Kauffman calculus. Moreover, this planar calculus is also applicable to other symmetric representations beyond the fundamental one, and to links which are not fully bipartite what is illustrated by examples of Kanenobu-like links.

Abstract:In this paper we give a quantum statistical interpretation for the bracket polynomial state sum <K> and for the Jones polynomial. We use this quantum mechanical interpretation to give a new quantum algorithm for computing the Jones polynomial. This algorithm is useful for its conceptual simplicity, and it applies to all values of the polynomial variable that lie on the unit circle in the complex plane. Letting C(K) denote the Hilbert space for this model, there is a natural unitary transformation U from C(K) to itself such that <K> = <F|U|F> where |F> is a sum over basis states for C(K). The quantum algorithm arises directly from this formula via the Hadamard Test. We then show that the framework for our quantum model for the bracket polynomial is a natural setting for Khovanov homology. The Hilbert space C(K) of our model has basis in one-to-one correspondence with the enhanced states of the bracket state summmation and is isomorphic with the chain complex for Khovanov homology with coefficients in the complex numbers. We show that for the Khovanov boundary operator d defined on C(K) we have the relationship dU + Ud = 0. Consequently, the unitary operator U acts on the Khovanov homology, and we therefore obtain a direct relationship between Khovanov homology and this quantum algorithm for the Jones polynomial. The formula for the Jones polynomial as a graded Euler characteristic is now expressed in terms of the eigenvalues of U and the Euler characteristics of the eigenspaces of U in the homology. The quantum algorithm given here is inefficient, and so it remains an open problem to determine better quantum algorithms that involve both the Jones polynomial and the Khovanov homology.

Abstract:We study pseudo-classical knots in the non-orientable thickening of a non-orientable surface, specifically knots that are orientation-preserving paths in a non-orientable 3-manifold of the form (non-orientable surface) [0, 1]. For these knots, we propose an analog of the Kauffman bracket polynomial. The construction of this polynomial closely mirrors the classical version, with key differences in the definitions of the sign of a crossing and the positive/negative smoothing of a crossing. We prove that this polynomial is an isotopy invariant of pseudo-classical knots and demonstrate that it is independent of the classical Kauffman bracket polynomial for knots in the thickened orientable surface, which is the orientable double cover of the non-orientable surface under consideration.
