This article aims to shed light on several leading training algorithms in the domain. Generative AI has left a profound imprint on a myriad of industries. Intelligent publishing, advertising content creation, and finance are just a few sectors that have been revolutionized by this technology. As with all significant technological shifts, generative AI is not without its challenges. The implications it holds for employment, intellectual property rights, as well as security and privacy concerns, are profound. It's vital for stakeholders in the AI domain and beyond to consider and address these challenges. Abstract:The field of deep generative modeling has grown rapidly and consistently over the years. With the availability of massive amounts of training data coupled with advances in scalable unsupervised learning paradigms, recent large-scale generative models show tremendous promise in synthesizing high-resolution images and text, as well as structured data such as videos and molecules. However, we argue that current large-scale generative AI models do not sufficiently address several fundamental issues that hinder their widespread adoption across domains. In this work, we aim to identify key unresolved challenges in modern generative AI paradigms that should be tackled to further enhance their capabilities, versatility, and reliability. By identifying these challenges, we aim to provide researchers with valuable insights for exploring fruitful research directions, thereby fostering the development of more robust and accessible generative AI solutions.

Abstract:Generative AI (Gen-AI) is rapidly changing the landscape of User-Generated Content (UGC) on social media. AI tools for generating text, images, and videos, such as Large-Language Models (LLM), image generation AI, AI-powered video material tools, and deep fake technologies, are accelerating creators in obtaining content ideas, drafting outlines, and streamlining creative workflows. The capabilities of Gen-AI could introduce new opportunities to lower the bar and accelerate the pace of content creation for grassroots creators, thereby expanding the volume of AI-generated UGC on social media. However, we lack the necessary understanding of how the wide deployment of such technologies will impact the social media ecosystem. The introduction of Gen-AI can lead to both opportunities and potential challenges among different creator communities, requiring collaboration from both academia and industry. This workshop seeks to bring together experts working on relevant topics of Gen-AI and UGC, to roadmap research on important issues boldly and responsibly.

Abstract:A new class of tools, colloquially called generative AI, can produce high-quality artistic media for visual arts, concept art, music, fiction, literature, video, and animation. The generative capabilities of these tools are likely to fundamentally alter the creative processes by which creators formulate ideas and put them into production. As creativity is reimagined, so too may be many sectors of society. Understanding the impact of generative AI - and making policy decisions around it - requires new interdisciplinary scientific inquiry into culture, economics, law, algorithms, and the interaction of technology and creativity. We argue that generative AI is not the harbinger of art's demise, but rather is a new medium with its own distinct affordances. In this vein, we consider the impacts of this new medium on creators across four themes: aesthetics and culture, legal questions of ownership and credit, the future of creative work, and impacts on the contemporary media ecosystem. Across these themes, we highlight key research questions and directions to inform policy and beneficial uses of the technology.

Analysis of Generative AI Policies in Computing Course Syllabi

Abstract:Since the release of ChatGPT in 2022, Generative AI (GenAI) is increasingly being used in higher education computing classrooms across the United States. While scholars have looked at overall institutional guidance for the use of GenAI and reports have documented the response from schools in the form of broad guidance to instructors, we do not know what policies and practices instructors are actually adopting and how they are being communicated to students through course syllabi. To study instructors' policy guidance, we collected 98 computing course syllabi from 54 R1 institutions in the U.S. and studied the GenAI policies they adopted and the surrounding discourse. Our analysis shows that 1) most instructions related to GenAI use were as part of the academic integrity policy for the course and 2) most syllabi prohibited or restricted GenAI use, often warning students about the broader implications of using GenAI, e.g. lack of veracity, privacy risks, and hindering learning. Beyond this, there was wide variation in how instructors approached GenAI including a focus on how to cite GenAI use, conceptualizing GenAI as an assistant, often in an anthropomorphic manner, and mentioning specific GenAI tools for use. We discuss the implications of our findings and conclude with current best practices for instructors.

Abstract:Background The public release of ChatGPT in November 2022 sparked a boom and public interest in generative artificial intelligence (AI) that has led to journals and journal families hastily releasing generative AI policies, ranging from asking authors for acknowledgement or declaration to the outright banning of use. Results Here, we briefly discuss the basics of machine learning, generative AI, and how it will affect scientific publishing. We focus especially on potential risks and benefits to the scientific community as a whole and journals specifically. Conclusion While the concerns of editors, for example about manufactured studies, are valid, some recently implemented or suggested policies will not be sustainable in the long run. The quality of generated text and code is quickly becoming so high that it will not only be impossible to detect the use of generative AI but would also mean taking a powerful tool away from researchers that can make their life easier every day. Significance We discuss the history and current state of AI and highlight its relevance for medical publishing and pain research. We provide guidance on how to act now to increase good scientific practice in the world of ChatGPT and call for a task force focusing on improving publishing pain research with use of generative AI.

Abstract:In a previous Birds of a Feather discussion, we delved into the nascent applications of generative AI, contemplating its potential and speculating on future trajectories. Since then, the landscape has continued to evolve revealing the capabilities and limitations of these models. Despite this progress, the computing education research community still faces uncertainty around pivotal aspects such as (1) academic integrity and assessments, (2) curricular adaptations, (3) pedagogical strategies, and (4) the competencies students require to instill responsible use of these tools. The goal of this Birds of a Feather discussion is to unravel these pressing and persistent issues with computing educators and researchers, fostering a collaborative exploration of strategies to navigate the educational implications of advancing generative AI technologies. Aligned with this goal of building an inclusive learning community, our BoF is led by globally distributed leaders to facilitate multiple coordinated discussions that can lead to a broader conversation about the role of LLMs in CS education.

Abstract:Generative artificial intelligence (AI), including large language models (LLMs), is poised to transform scientific research, enabling researchers to elevate their research productivity. This article presents a how-to guide for employing LLMs in academic settings, focusing on their unique strengths, constraints and implications through the lens of philosophy of science and epistemology. Using ChatGPT as a case study, I identify and elaborate on three attributes contributing to its effectiveness—intelligence, versatility and collaboration—accompanied by tips on crafting effective prompts, practical use cases and a living resource online (https://osf.io/8vpwu/). Next, I evaluate the limitations of generative AI and its implications for ethical use, equality and education. Regarding ethical and responsible use, I argue from technical and epistemic standpoints that there is no need to restrict the scope or nature of AI assistance, provided that its use is transparently disclosed. A pressing challenge, however, lies in detecting fake research, which can be mitigated by embracing open science practices, such as transparent peer review and sharing data, code and materials. Addressing equality, I contend that while generative AI may promote equality for some, it may simultaneously exacerbate disparities for others—an issue with potentially significant yet unclear ramifications as it unfolds. Lastly, I consider the implications for education, advocating for active engagement with LLMs and cultivating students' critical thinking and analytical skills. The how-to guide seeks to empower researchers with the knowledge and resources necessary to effectively harness generative AI while navigating the complex ethical dilemmas intrinsic to its application.

Abstract:The advancements in Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) provide opportunities to enrich educational experiences, but also raise concerns about academic integrity. Many educators have expressed anxiety and hesitation in integrating GenAI in their teaching practices, and are in needs of recommendations and guidance from their institutions that can support them to incorporate GenAI in their classrooms effectively. In order to respond to higher educators' needs, this study aims to explore how universities and educators respond and adapt to the development of GenAI in their academic contexts by analyzing academic policies and guidelines established by top-ranked U.S. universities regarding the use of GenAI, especially ChatGPT. Data sources include academic policies, statements, guidelines, and relevant resources provided by the top 100 universities in the U.S. Results show that the majority of these universities adopt an open but cautious approach towards GenAI. Primary concerns lie in ethical usage, accuracy, and data privacy. Most universities actively respond and provide diverse types of resources, such as syllabus templates, workshops, shared articles, and one-on-one consultations focusing on a range of topics: general technical introduction, ethical concerns, pedagogical applications, preventive strategies, data privacy, limitations, and detective tools. The findings provide four practical pedagogical implications for educators in teaching practices: accept its presence, align its use with learning objectives, evolve curriculum to prevent misuse, and adopt multifaceted evaluation strategies rather than relying on AI detectors. Two recommendations are suggested for educators in policy making: establish discipline-specific policies and guidelines, and manage sensitive information carefully.

Abstract:Generative Artificial Intelligence has rapidly expanded its footprint of use in educational institutions. It has been embraced by students, faculty, and staff alike. The technology is capable of carrying out a sustained sequence of interactive dialogs and creating reasonably meaningful text. Not surprisingly it seems to be routinely used by faculty to generate questions and assignments, by students to submit assignments and aid in self-learning, and administration to create manuals, memoranda, and policy documents. With its potential to lead to significant social innovation, tethering on the verge of becoming a disruptive technology, it seems most unlikely that it will fade away without being fully enfolded into almost all aspects of academic and pedagogical activity. While it is early to predict the exact place of this technology in education, we present thoughts to aid deliberations and give a brief review of the opportunities and challenges.

Abstract:Abstract The emergence of generative artificial intelligence (AI), exemplified by models like ChatGPT, presents both opportunities and challenges. As these technologies become increasingly integrated into various aspects of society, the need for a harmonized legal framework to address the associated risks becomes crucial. This article presents a comprehensive analysis of the disruptive impact of generative AI, the legal risks of AI-generated content, and the governance strategies needed to strike a balance between innovation and regulation. Employing a three-pronged methodology—literature review, doctrinal legal analysis, and case study integration—the study examines the current legal landscape; synthesizes scholarly works on the technological, ethical, and socioeconomic implications of generative AI; and illustrates practical challenges through real-world case studies. The article assesses the strengths and limitations of US governance strategies for AI and proposes a harmonized legal framework emphasizing international collaboration, proactive legislation, and the establishment of a dedicated regulatory body. By engaging diverse stakeholders and identifying critical gaps in current research, the study contributes to the development of a legal framework that upholds ethical principles, protects individual rights, and fosters responsible innovation in the age of generative AI.
From Guidelines to Governance: A Study of AI Policies in Education

Abstract:Emerging technologies like generative AI tools, including ChatGPT, are increasingly utilized in educational settings, offering innovative approaches to learning while simultaneously posing new challenges. This study employs a survey methodology to examine the policy landscape concerning these technologies, drawing insights from 102 high school principals and higher education provosts. Our results reveal a prominent policy gap: the majority of institutions lack specialized guide-lines for the ethical deployment of AI tools such as ChatGPT. Moreover,we observed that high schools are less inclined to work on policies than higher educational institutions. Where such policies do exist, they often overlook crucial issues, including student privacy and algorithmic transparency. Administrators overwhelmingly recognize the necessity of these policies, primarily to safeguard student safety and mitigate plagiarism risks. Our findings underscore the urgent need for flexible and iterative policy frameworks in educational contexts.

Abstract:This study conducts a comparative analysis of national policies on Generative AI across four countries: China, Japan, Mongolia, and the USA. Employing the Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) method, it examines the responses of these nations to Generative AI in higher education settings, scrutinizing the diversity in their approaches within this group. While all four countries exhibit a positive attitude toward Generative AI in higher education, Japan and the USA prioritize a human-centered approach and provide direct guidance in teaching and learning. In contrast, China and Mongolia prioritize national security concerns, with their guidelines focusing more on the societal level rather than being specifically tailored to education. Additionally, despite all four countries emphasizing diversity, equity, and inclusion, they consistently fail to clearly discuss or implement measures to address the digital divide. By offering a comprehensive comparative analysis of attitudes and policies regarding Generative AI in higher education across these countries, this study enriches existing literature and provides policymakers with a global perspective, ensuring that policies in this domain promote inclusion rather than exclusion.

Abstract:The rise of Generative AI (GenAI) brings about transformative potential across sectors, but its dual-use nature also amplifies risks. Governments globally are grappling with the challenge of regulating GenAI, balancing innovation against safety. China, the United States (US), and the European Union (EU) are at the forefront with initiatives like the Management of Algorithmic Recommendations, the Executive Order, and the AI Act, respectively. However, the rapid evolution of GenAI capabilities often outpaces the development of comprehensive safety measures, creating a gap between regulatory needs and technical advancements. A workshop co-organized by Google, University of Wisconsin, Madison (UW-Madison), and Stanford University aimed to bridge this gap between GenAI policy and technology. The diverse stakeholders of the GenAI space -- from the public and governments to academia and industry -- make any safety measures under consideration more complex, as both technical feasibility and regulatory guidance must be realized. This paper summarizes the discussions during the workshop which addressed questions, such as: How regulation can be designed without hindering technological progress? How technology can evolve to meet regulatory standards? The interplay between legislation and technology is a very vast topic, and we don't claim that this paper is a comprehensive treatment on this topic. This paper is meant to capture findings based on the workshop, and hopefully, can guide discussion on this topic.

Abstract:Propelled by their remarkable capabilities to generate novel and engaging content, Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) technologies are disrupting traditional workflows in many industries. While prior research has examined GenAI from a techno-centric perspective, there is still a lack of understanding about how users perceive and utilize GenAI in real-world scenarios. To bridge this gap, we conducted semi-structured interviews with (N=18) GenAI users in creative industries, investigating the human-GenAI co-creation process within a holistic LUA (Learning, Using and Assessing) framework. Our study uncovered an intriguingly complex landscape: Prospects-GenAI greatly fosters the co-creation between human expertise and GenAI capabilities, profoundly transforming creative workflows; Challenges-Meanwhile, users face substantial uncertainties and complexities arising from resource availability, tool usability, and regulatory compliance; Strategies-In response, users actively devise various strategies to overcome many of such challenges. Our study reveals key implications for the design of future GenAI tools.

Abstract:This paper aims to comprehensively examine the multifaceted role of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) within academic settings, exploring its diverse applications, opportunities, and challenges. Employing a systematic review approach, this study synthesizes and analyzes the existing literature pertaining to the integration of AI in academia. It critically evaluates the varied applications of generative AI tools across different domains such as literature review, visualization, content generation, plagiarism detection, language enhancement, data analysis, and journal selection. The examination reveals a myriad of advantages brought forth by generative AI applications, including a substantial reduction in researchers' workloads, time-saving mechanisms, the extraction of valuable insights from extensive datasets, and an overall enhancement in the quality of scholarly outputs. However, alongside these benefits, several challenges and limitations emerge. These include concerns regarding accuracy and reliability, ethical implications, limitations in linguistic and contextual understanding, potential hindrance to critical thinking and creativity, issues with data visualization, training requirements, staying updated with recent research, and the complexity and costs associated with specialized training. This paper provides a comprehensive and structured overview of the applications, advantages, and challenges of utilizing generative AI in academic settings. It synthesizes existing knowledge, critically evaluates the implications, and highlights the need for a balanced approach to harness the full potential of AI while mitigating ethical and practical challenges. The paper's contribution lies in offering a holistic view of AI's impact on academia, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts among stakeholders to maximize benefits while ensuring ethical standards and academic integrity.
