A Mathematical Proof of the Four-Color Conjecture (1): Transformation Step

Abstract:The four-color conjecture has puzzled mathematicians for over 170 years and has yet to be proven by purely mathematical methods. This series of articles provides a purely mathematical proof of the four-color conjecture, consisting of two parts: the transformation step and the decycle step. The transformation step uses two innovative tools, contracting and extending operations and unchanged bichromatic cycles, to transform the proof of the four-color conjecture into the decycle problem of 4-base modules. Moreover, the decycle step solves the decycle problem of 4-base modules using two other innovative tools: the color-connected potential and the pocket operations. This article presents the proof of the transformation step.

Abstract:An approach of using RGB-tilings for proving the Four Color Theorem discussed in three previous work is expanded in this paper. A novel methodology and revisions for the methodology in the three aforementioned papers are discussed, and a previously derived result involving three degree-five vertices in a triangular graph is improved. Moreover, a treatment of a novel topic for a graph with six vertices of degree 5 in a dumbbell shape is presented.

Abstract:This paper considers the problem of showing that every pair of binary trees with the same number of leaves parses a common word under a certain simple grammar. We enumerate the common parse words for several infinite families of tree pairs and discuss several ways to reduce the problem of finding a parse word for a pair of trees to that for a smaller pair. The statement that every pair of trees has a common parse word is equivalent to the statement that every planar graph is four-colorable, so the results are a step toward a language theoretic proof of the four color theorem.

Abstract:The Four color problem is closely related to other branches of mathematics and practical applications. More than 20 of its reformulations are known, which connect this problem with problems of algebra, statistical mechanics and planning. And this is also typical for mathematics: the solution to a problem studied out of pure curiosity turns out to be useful in representing real objects and processes that are completely different in nature. Despite the published machine methods for combinatorial proof of the Four color conjecture, there is still no clear description of the mechanism for coloring a planar graph with four colors, its natural essence and its connection with the phenomenon of graph planarity. It is necessary not only to prove (preferably by deductive methods) that any planar graph can be colored with four colors, but also to show how to color it. The paper considers an approach based on the possibility of reducing a maximally flat graph to a regular flat cubic graph with its further coloring. Based on the Tate-Volynsky theorem, the vertices of a maximally flat graph can be colored with four colors, if the edges of its dual cubic graph can be colored with three colors. Considering the properties of a colored cubic graph, it can be shown that the addition of colors obeys the transformation laws of the fourth order Klein group. Using this property, it is possible to create algorithms for coloring planar graphs.

Abstract:This is the last part of three episodes to demonstrate a renewal approach for proving the Four Color Theorem without checking by a computer. The first and the second episodes have subtitles: ``RGB-tilings on maximal planar graphs'' and ``R/G/B Kempe chains in an extremum non-4-colorable MPG,'' where R/G/B stand for red, green and blue colors to paint on edges and an MPG stands for a maximal planar graph. We focus on an extremum non-4-colorable MPG $EP$ in the whole paper. In this part we introduce three tools based on RGB-tilings. They are diamond routes, normal and generalized canal lines or rings and $\Sigma$-adjustments. Using these tools, we show a major result of this paper: no four vertices of degree 5 form a diamond in any extremum $EP$.

Abstract:<p>Máčajová et al. (2016) defined the chromatic number of a signed graph which coincides for all-positive signed graphs with the chromatic number of unsigned graphs. They conjectured that in this setting, for signed planar graphs four colors are always enough, generalizing thereby The Four Color Theorem. We disprove the conjecture.</p>

Abstract:In this paper, we apply an equivalent color transform (ECT) for a minimal k-coloring of any graph G. It contracts each color class of the graph to a single vertex and produces a complete graph K_k for G by removing redundant edges between any two vertices. Based on ECT, a simple proof for four color theorem for planar graph is then proposed.

Abstract:In 1995, Erdős and Gyárfás proved that in every $2$-edge-coloured complete graph on $n$ vertices, there exists a collection of $2\sqrt{n}$ monochromatic paths, all of the same colour, which cover the entire vertex set. They conjectured that it is possible to replace $2\sqrt{n}$ by $\sqrt{n}$. We prove this to be true for all sufficiently large $n$.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Computing, Volume 53, Issue 1, Page 111-145, February 2024. This is the first paper in a series whose goal is to give a polynomial-time algorithm for the 4-coloring problem and the 4-precoloring extension problem restricted to the class of graphs with no induced six-vertex path, thus proving a conjecture of Huang. Combined with previously known results, this completes the classification of the complexity of the 4-coloring problem for graphs with a connected forbidden induced subgraph. In this paper we give a polynomial-time algorithm that determines if a special kind of precoloring of a [math]-free graph has a precoloring extension, and constructs such an extension if one exists. Combined with the main result of the second paper of the series, this gives a complete solution to the problem.

Abstract:Hassler Whitney's theorem of 1931 reduces the task of finding proper, vertex 4-colorings of triangulations of the 2-sphere to finding such colorings for the class $\mathfrak H$ of triangulations of the 2-sphere that have a Hamiltonian circuit. This has been used by Whitney and others from 1936 to the present to find equivalent reformulations of the 4 Color Theorem (4CT). Recently there has been activity to try to use some of these reformuations to find a shorter proof of the 4CT. Every triangulation in $\mathfrak H$ has a dual graph that is a union of two binary trees with the same number of leaves. Elements of a group known as Thompson's group $F$ are equivalence classes of pairs of binary trees with the same number of leaves. This paper explores this resemblance and finds that some recent reformulations of the 4CT are essentially attempting to color elements of $\mathfrak H$ using expressions of elements of $F$ as words in a certain generating set for $F$. From this, we derive information about not just the colorability of certain elements of $\mathfrak H$, but also about all possible ways to color these elements. Because of this we raise (and answer some) questions about enumeration. We also bring in an extension $E$ of the group $F$ and ask whether certain elements ``parametrize'' the set of all colorings of the elements of $\mathfrak H$ that use all four colors.

Abstract:This is the second part of three episodes to demonstrate a renewal approach for proving the Four Color Theorem without checking by a computer. The first and the third episodes have subtitles: ``RGB-tilings on maximal planar graphs'' and ``Diamond routes, canal lines and $\Sigma$-adjustments,'' where R/G/B stand for red, green and blue colors to paint on edges and an MPG stands for a maximal planar graph. We focus on an extremum non-4-colorable MPG $EP$ in the whole paper. In this second part, we refresh the false proof on $EP$ by Kempe for the Four Color Theorem. And then using single color tilings or RGB-tilings on $EP$, we offer a renewal point of view through R/G/B Kempe chains to enhance our coloring skill, either in vertex-colorings or in edge-colorings. We discover many fundamental theorems associated with R-/RGB-tilings and 4-colorability; an adventure study on One Piece, which is either an MPG or an $n$-semi-MPG; many if-and-only-if statements for $EP-\{e\}$ by using Type A or Type B $e$-diamond and Kempe chains. This work started on May 31, 2018 and was first announced by the author~\cite{Liu2020} on Jan.\ 22, 2020, when the pandemic just occurred.

Abstract:We prove that every 2-sphere graph different from a prism can be vertex 4-colored in such a way that all Kempe chains are forests. This implies the following three tree theorem: the arboricity of a discrete 2-sphere is 3. Moreover, the three trees can be chosen so that each hits every triangle. A consequence is a result of an exercise in the book of Bondy and Murty based on work of A. Frank, A. Gyarfas and C. Nash-Williams: the arboricity of a planar graph is less or equal than 3.
