Abstract:We present an intuitively satisfying geometric proof of Fermat's result for positive integers that for prime moduli p, provided p does not divide a. This is known as Fermat’s Little Theorem. The proof is novel in using the idea of colorings applied to regular polygons to establish a number-theo retic result. A lemma traditionally, if ambiguously, attributed to Burnside provides a critical enumeration step.

Abstract:A Gallai coloring of the complete graph is an edge-coloring with no rainbow triangle. This concept first appeared in the study of comparability graphs and anti-Ramsey theory. We introduce a transitive analogue for acyclic directed graphs, and generalize both notions to Coxeter systems, matroids and commutative algebras. It is shown that for any finite matroid (or oriented matroid), the maximal number of colors is equal to the matroid rank. This generalizes a result of Erdős-Simonovits-Sós for complete graphs. The number of Gallai (or transitive) colorings of the matroid that use at most $k$ colors is a polynomial in $k$. Also, for any acyclic oriented matroid, represented over the real numbers, the number of transitive colorings using at most 2 colors is equal to the number of chambers in the dual hyperplane arrangement. We count Gallai and transitive colorings of the root system of type A using the maximal number of colors, and show that, when equipped with a natural descent set map, the resulting quasisymmetric function is symmetric and Schur-positive.

Abstract:We first give a proof of the Alon–Tarsi list coloring theorem that differs from Alon and Tarsi's original. We use the ideas from this proof to obtain the following result, which is an additive coloring analog of the Alon–Tarsi Theorem: Let G be a graph and let D be an orientation of G . We introduce a new digraph , such that if the out-degree in D of each vertex v is , and if the number of Eulerian subdigraphs of with an even number of edges differs from the number of Eulerian subdigraphs of with an odd number of edges, then for any assignment of lists L ( v ) of positive integers to the vertices of G , there is an additive coloring of G assigning to each vertex v an element from L ( v ). As an application, we prove an additive list coloring result for tripartite graphs G such that one of the color classes of G contains only vertices whose neighborhoods are complete.

Abstract:A Gallai coloring of a complete graph is an edge-coloring such that no triangle has all its edges colored differently. A Gallai k-coloring is a Gallai coloring that uses at most k colors. Given an integer k >= 2, and graphs H-1, H-2, ..., H-k, the Gallai-Ramsey number GR(H-1, H-2, ..., H-k) is the least positive integer N such that every Gallai k-coloring of the complete graph K-N contains a monochromatic copy of H-i in color i for some i is an element of {1, 2,..., k}. Let mG denote the union of m disjoint copies of G. This paper studies the Gallai-Ramsey number GR(t(1)K(3), ..., t(k)K(3)) for all integers t(1) >= t(2) >= ... >= t(k) >= 1. The case t(1) = t(2) = ... = t(k) = 1 was obtained by Chung and Graham (1983). In this paper, we obtain a general bound of GR(t(1)K(3), ..., t(k)K(3)) for all t(1) >= t(2) >= ... >= t(k) >= 1, and prove that both the upper and lower bounds can be attained for some t(i), i is an element of {1, ..., k}. Abstract:As a significant variation of Ramsey numbers, the Gallai-Ramsey number $GR_k(H)$ refers to the smallest positive integer $r$ such that, by coloring the edges of $K_r$ with at most $k$ colors, there exists either a monochromatic subgraph isomorphic to $H$ or a rainbow triangle. Mao, Wang, Magnant, and Schiermeyer [Discrete Math., 2023], Song, Wei, Zhang, and Zhao [Discrete Math., 2020], and Zhao and Wei [Discrete Appl. Math., 2021] each proposed one conjecture on the Gallai-Ramsey numbers for fans, wheels, and kipases, respectively. We establish new lower bounds that disprove all three conjectures. Su and Liu [Graphs Combin., 2022] studied the Gallai-Ramsey-full property of graphs and conjectured that a graph is Ramsey-full if and only if it is Gallai-Ramsey-full. We present two classes of graphs that are Ramsey-full, but neither is Gallai-Ramsey-full.

Abstract:Given a graph G=(V,E) , the Gallai graph of G, denoted by Γ (G) , is the graph with vertex set E in which two edges e and f of G are adjacent in Γ (G) iff e and f are adjacent in G but do not span a triangle in G. The Gallai chromatic number of G, denoted by χ ^Γ(G) , is defined to be the chromatic number of Γ (G) . It is known that the problem for determining χ ^Γ(G) is NP-complete for a general graph G. In this paper, we study the Gallai chromatic number of graphs and relate our research with some parameters about edge coloring of graphs, such as PC number, SPC number, as well as chromatic index. For the (k, r)-star, we determine its PC number, SPC number, Gallai chromatic number, and chromatic index, and show that these parameters differ considerably in a sense. Then we show that the problem for determining χ ^Γ(G) is still NP-complete even when G is a 3-regular graph, a near-complete graph or a chordal graph of diameter 5. Our result also implies that the problem for determining the SPC number of a graph G is NP-complete when G is a chordal graph of diameter 5.

Abstract:The Sylvester-Gallai Theorem, stated as a problem by J. J. Sylvester in 1893, asserts that for any finite, noncollinear set of points on a plane, there exists a line passing through exactly two points of the set. First, it is shown that for the real plane, the theorem is constructively invalid. Then, a well-known classical proof is examined from a constructive standpoint, locating the nonconstructivities. Finally, a constructive version of the theorem is established for the plane; this reveals the hidden constructive content of the classical theorem. The constructive methods used are those proposed by Errett Bishop.

Abstract:Let $\mathbf{G}:=(G_1, G_2, G_3)$ be a triple of graphs on the same vertex set $V$ of size $n$. A rainbow triangle in $\mathbf{G}$ is a triple of edges $(e_1, e_2, e_3)$ with $e_i\in G_i$ for each $i$ and $\{e_1, e_2, e_3\}$ forming a triangle in $V$. The triples $\mathbf{G}$ not containing rainbow triangles, also known as Gallai colouring templates, are a widely studied class of objects in extremal combinatorics. In the present work, we fully determine the set of edge densities $(\alpha_1, \alpha_2, \alpha_3)$ such that if $\vert E(G_i)\vert> \alpha_i n^2$ for each $i$ and $n$ is sufficiently large, then $\mathbf{G}$ must contain a rainbow triangle. This resolves a problem raised by Aharoni, DeVos, de la Maza, Montejanos and Šámal, generalises several previous results on extremal Gallai colouring templates, and proves a recent conjecture of Frankl, Györi, He, Lv, Salia, Tompkins, Varga and Zhu.

A solution to Ringel's circle problem

Abstract:We construct families of circles in the plane such that their tangency graphs have arbitrarily large girth and chromatic number. This provides a strong negative answer to Ringel's circle problem (1959). The proof relies on a (multidimensional) version of Gallai's theorem with polynomial constraints, which we derive from the Hales-Jewett theorem and which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the following Gallai-Ramsey question: how large must a complete bipartite graph $K_{n_1, n_2}$ be before any coloring of its edges with $r$ colors contains either a monochromatic copy of $G = K_{s,t}$ or a rainbow copy of $H = K_{s,t}$? We demonstrate that the answer is linear in $r$, and provide more precise bounds for the specific case $s = 2$. Furthermore, we also consider the following Euclidean Gallai-Ramsey question: given a configuration $H$ in Euclidean space, what is the smallest $n$ such that any $r$-coloring of $n$-dimensional Euclidean space contains a monochromatic or rainbow configuration congruent to $H$? Through a natural translation between edge colorings of the complete bipartite graph $K_{n_1,n_2}$ and colorings of a subset of $(n_1+n_2)$-dimensional Euclidean space, we prove new upper bounds on $n$ for some configurations which can be expressed as Cartesian products of simplices.
