Abstract:The negative solution to the famous problem of 36 officers of Euler implies that there are no two orthogonal Latin squares of order six. We show that the problem has a solution, provided the officers are entangled, and construct orthogonal quantum Latin squares of this size. As a consequence, we find an example of the long-elusive Absolutely Maximally Entangled state AME(4,6) of four subsystems with six levels each, equivalently a 2-unitary matrix of size 36, which maximizes the entangling power among all bipartite unitary gates of this dimension, or a perfect tensor with four indices, each running from one to six. This special state deserves the appellation golden AME state, as the golden ratio appears prominently in its elements. This result allows us to construct a pure nonadditive quhex quantum error detection code ((3,6,2))_{6}, which saturates the Singleton bound and allows one to encode a six-level state into a triplet of such states.

Abstract:The famous combinatorial problem of Euler concerns an arrangement of $36$ officers from six different regiments in a $6 \times 6$ square array. Each regiment consists of six officers each belonging to one of six ranks. The problem, originating from Saint Petersburg, requires that each row and each column of the array contains only one officer of a given rank and given regiment. Euler observed that such a configuration does not exist. In recent work, we constructed a solution to a quantum version of this problem assuming that the officers correspond to quantum states and can be entangled. In this paper, we explain the solution which is based on a partition of 36 officers into nine groups, each with four elements. The corresponding quantum states are locally equivalent to maximally entangled two-qubit states, hence each officer is entangled with at most three out of his $35$ colleagues. The entire quantum combinatorial design involves $9$ Bell bases in nine complementary $4$-dimensional subspaces.

Abstract:We consider a variety of Euler's conjecture, i.e., whether the Diophantine system n=a_1+a_2+⋯+a_s-1, a_1a_2⋯ a_s-1(a_1+a_2+⋯+a_s-1)=b^s has solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+,i=1,2,…,s-1,s≥ 3. By using the theory of elliptic curves, we prove that it has no solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+ for s=3, but for s=4 it has infinitely many solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ^+ and for s≥ 5 there are infinitely many polynomial solutions n,b,a_i∈ℤ[t_1,t_2,…,t_s-3] with positive value satisfying this Diophantine system.

Abstract:We show that the maximum cardinality of an equiangular line system in $\mathbb R^{18}$ is at most $59$. Our proof includes a novel application of the Jacobi identity for complementary subgraphs. In particular, we show that there does not exist a graph whose adjacency matrix has characteristic polynomial $(x-22)(x-2)^{42} (x+6)^{15} (x+8)^2$.

Abstract:In this note I give simple proofs of classical results of Euler, Legendre and Sylvester showing that for certain integers M there are no (or only a few) solutions of $x^3 + y^3 = M$, with $x$ and $y$ in $\mathbb{Q}$. The proofs all use a single argument -- infinite 3-descent in the ring $\mathcal{O} = \mathbb{Z}[\omega]$ of Eisenstein integers. (Everything needed about $\mathcal{O}$ is developed from scratch.) The reader only needs the briefest acquaintance with complex numbers, fields and congruence modulo an element of a commutative ring. In particular I never say anything about ideals or elliptic curves (though I do mention cubic reciprocity in passing), and a clever high-school student might well enjoy the note. A few new results with $M$ in $\mathcal{O}$ and $x$ and $y$ in $\mathbb{Q}[\omega]$ are also derived.

Abstract:We give a new and self-contained proof for an alternative form of Tunnell’s theorem on congruent numbers. The proof relies on more knowledge on quadratic forms with less calculation than Tunnell’s proof. The approach is based on our observation that the equality $$\#\{(x,y,z,w) \in \mathbb {Z}^4|p=2x^2+3y^2+3z^2+4w^2+2yz\}=\#\{(x,y,z) \in \mathbb {Z}^3|p^2=2x^2+4y^2+9z^2-4yz\}$$ holds for any odd prime p. The same method is applied to the elliptic curves $$E_n:~y^2=x^3+n^2x$$ and $$E_{n}:~~y^2=x(x-n)(x+3n)(E_{-n}:~~y^2=x(x+n)(x-3n))$$ ( $$\pi /3$$ ( $$2\pi /3$$ )-congruent elliptic curves), where we list, without proof, the analogous results. A series of criteria for congruent numbers are given. In particular, for a prime p, we show that if $$p\equiv 1\pmod {8}$$ is a congruent number then the 8-rank of $$K_2O_{\mathbb {Q}(\sqrt{p})}$$ equals one; if $$p\equiv 1\pmod {16}$$ with $$h(-p)\not \equiv h(-2p)\pmod {16}$$ then 2p is not a congruent number; and if $$p\equiv 1, q\equiv 3\pmod {8}$$ are two primes with $$h(-pq)\not \equiv h(-p)\pmod {8}$$ then pq is not a congruent number.

Abstract:We formulate an Iwasawa main conjecture for a higher rank Euler system for a general motive. We prove "one half" of the main conjecture under mild hypotheses. We also formulate a conjecture on "Darmon-type derivatives" of Euler systems and give an application to the Tamagawa number conjecture. Lastly, we specialize our general framework to the setting of Heegner points and give a natural interpretation of the Heegner point main conjecture in terms of rank two Euler systems.

Formal Verification of the Empty Hexagon Number

Abstract:A recent breakthrough in computer-assisted mathematics showed that every set of $30$ points in the plane in general position (i.e., without three on a common line) contains an empty convex hexagon, thus closing a line of research dating back to the 1930s. Through a combination of geometric insights and automated reasoning techniques, Heule and Scheucher constructed a CNF formula $\phi_n$, with $O(n^4)$ clauses, whose unsatisfiability implies that no set of $n$ points in general position can avoid an empty convex hexagon. An unsatisfiability proof for n = 30 was then found with a SAT solver using 17300 CPU hours of parallel computation, thus implying that the empty hexagon number h(6) is equal to 30. In this paper, we formalize and verify this result in the Lean theorem prover. Our formalization covers discrete computational geometry ideas and SAT encoding techniques that have been successfully applied to similar Erdős-Szekeres-type problems. In particular, our framework provides tools to connect standard mathematical objects to propositional assignments, which represents a key step towards the formal verification of other SAT-based mathematical results. Overall, we hope that this work sets a new standard for verification when extensive computation is used for discrete geometry problems, and that it increases the trust the mathematical community has in computer-assisted proofs in this area.

On the cop number and the weak Meyniel's conjecture for algebraic graphs

Abstract:In this article, we study the game of cops and robbers in algebraic graphs. We show that the cop number of the Cayley sum graph of a finite group $G$ with respect to a subset $S$ is at most its degree when the graph is connected, undirected. We also show that a similar bound holds for the cop number of generalised Cayley graphs and the twisted Cayley sum graphs under some conditions. These extend a result of Frankl to such graphs. Using the above bounds and a result of Bollobás--Janson--Riordan, we show that the weak Meyniel's conjecture holds for these algebraic graphs.
