Abstract:This note presents an upper bound of $1.252 n$ on the size of a set system that satisfies the mod-6 town rules. Under these rules the sizes of the sets are not congruent to $0\bmod 6$ while the sizes of all pairwise intersections are congruent to $ 0\bmod 6$.

Abstract:In 1952, H. Davenport posed the problem of determining a condition on the minimum modulus $m_{0}$ in a finite distinct covering system that would imply that the sum of the reciprocals of the moduli in the covering system is bounded away from $1$. In 1973, P. Erdos and J. Selfridge indicated that they believed that $m_{0} > 4$ would suffice. We provide a proof that this is the case.

Abstract:Covering systems were introduced by Erdős in 1950. In the same article where he introduced them, he asked if the minimum modulus of a covering system with distinct moduli is bounded. In 2015, Hough answered affirmatively this long standing question. In 2022, Balister, Bollobás, Morris, Sahasrabudhe and Tiba gave a simpler and more versatile proof of Hough's result. Building upon their work, we show that there exists some absolute constant $c>0$ such that the $j$-th smallest modulus of a minimal covering system with distinct moduli is $\le \exp(cj^2/\log(j+1))$.

Attempting the impossible: enumerating extremal submodular functions for n=6

Abstract:Enumerating the extremal submodular functions defined on subsets of a fixed base set has only been done for base sets up to five elements. This paper reports the results of attempting to generate all such functions on a six-element base set. Using improved tools from polyhedral geometry, we have computed 360 billion of them, and provide the first reasonable estimate of their total number, which is expected to be between 1,000 and 10,000 times this number. The applied Double Description and Adjacency Decomposition methods require an insertion order of the defining inequalities. We introduce two novel orders, which speed up the computations significantly, and provide additional insight into the highly symmetric structure of submodular functions. We also present an improvement to the combinatorial test used as part of the Double Description method, and use statistical analyses to estimate the degeneracy of the polyhedral cone used to describe these functions. The statistical results also highlight the limitations of the applied methods.

Abstract:Set systems with strongly restricted intersections, called $\alpha$-intersecting families for a vector $\alpha$, were introduced recently as a generalization of several well-studied intersecting families including the classical oddtown and eventown. Given a binary vector $\alpha=(a_1, \ldots, a_k)$, a collection $\mathcal F$ of subsets over an $n$ element set is an $\alpha$-intersecting family modulo $2$ if for each $i=1,2,\ldots,k$, all $i$-wise intersections of distinct members in $\mathcal F$ have sizes with the same parity as $a_i$. Let $f_\alpha(n)$ denote the maximum size of such a family. In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of $f_\alpha(n)$ when $n$ goes to infinity. We show that if $t$ is the maximum integer such that $a_t=1$ and $2t\leq k$, then $f_{\alpha(n)} \sim {(t! n)}^{\frac 1 t}$. More importantly, we show that for any constant $c$, as the length $k$ goes larger, $f_\alpha(n)$ is upper bounded by $O (n^c)$ for almost all $\alpha$. Equivalently, no matter what $k$ is, there are only finitely many $\alpha$ satisfying $f_\alpha(n)=\Omega (n^c)$. This answers an open problem raised by Johnston and O'Neill in 2023. All of our results can be generalized to modulo $p$ setting for any prime $p$ smoothly.

Abstract:Consider a family $\mathcal{F}$ of $k$-subsets of an ambient $(k^2-k+1)$-set such that no pair of $k$-subsets in $\mathcal{F}$ intersects in exactly one element. In this short note we show that the maximal size of such $\mathcal{F}$ is $\binom{k^2-k-1}{k-2}$ for every $k > 1$.

Abstract:In this note, we present a conjecture on intersections of set families, and a rephrasing of the conjecture in terms of principal downsets of Boolean lattices. The conjecture informally states that, whenever we can express the measure of a union of sets in terms of the measure of some of their intersections using the inclusion-exclusion formula, then we can express the union as a set from these same intersections via the set operations of disjoint union and subset complement. We also present a partial result towards establishing the conjecture.

Bounds for Erdős covering systems in global function fields

Abstract:Covering systems of the integers were introduced by Erdős in 1950. Since then, many beautiful questions and conjectures about these objects have been posed. Most famously, Erdős asked whether the minimum modulus of a covering system with distinct moduli is arbitrarily large. This problem was resolved in 2015 by Hough, who proved that the minimum modulus is bounded. In 2022, Balister et al. developed Hough's method and gave a simpler but more versatile proof of Hough's result. Their technique has many applications in a number of variants on Erdős' minimum modulus problem. In this paper, we show that there is no covering system of multiplicity $s$ in any global function field of genus $g$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ for $q\geq(82.26+18.88g)e^{0.95g}s^2$. Moreover, we obtain that there is no covering system of $\mathbb{F}_q[x]$ with distinct moduli for $q>73$. This improves the results in the previous work of the author joint with Li, Wang and Yi.

Abstract:We study small non-trivial solutions of quadratic congruences of the form $x_1^2+\alpha_2x_2^2+\alpha_3x_3^2\equiv 0 \bmod{q}$, with $q$ being an odd natural number, in an average sense. This extends previous work of the authors in which they considered the case of prime power moduli $q$. Above, $\alpha_2$ is arbitrary but fixed and $\alpha_3$ is variable, and we assume that $(\alpha_2\alpha_3,q)=1$. We show that for all $\alpha_3$ modulo $q$ which are coprime to $q$ except for a small number of $\alpha_3$'s, an asymptotic formula for the number of solutions $(x_1,x_2,x_3)$ to the congruence $x_1^2+\alpha_2x_2^2+\alpha_3x_3^2\equiv 0 \bmod{q}$ with $\max\{|x_1|,|x_2|,|x_3|\}\le N$ and $(x_3,q)=1$ holds if $N\ge q^{11/24+\varepsilon}$ and $q$ is large enough. It is of significance that we break the barrier 1/2 in the above exponent. Key tools in our work are Burgess's estimate for character sums over short intervals and Heath-Brown's estimate for character sums with binary quadratic forms over small regions whose proofs depend on the Riemann hypothesis for curves over finite fields. We also formulate a refined conjecture about the size of the smallest solution of a ternary quadratic congruence, using information about the Diophantine properties of its coefficients.

A note on the largest sum-free sets of integers

Abstract:Given $A$ a set of $N$ positive integers, an old question in additive combinatorics asks that whether $A$ contains a sum-free subset of size at least $N/3+\omega(N)$ for some increasing unbounded function $\omega$. The question is generally attacked in the literature by considering another conjecture, which asserts that as $N\to\infty$, $\max_{x\in\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}}\sum_{n\in A}({\bf 1}_{(1/3,2/3)}-1/3)(nx)\to\infty$. This conjecture, if true, would also imply that a similar phenomenon occurs for $(2k,4k)$-sum-free sets for every $k\geq1$. In this note, we prove the latter result directly. The new ingredient of our proof is a structural analysis on the host set $A$, which might be of independent interest.

Generalizations of Joints Problem

Abstract:We generalize the joints problem to sets of varieties and prove almost sharp bound on the number of joints. As a special case, given a set of $N$ $2$-planes in $\mathbb{R}^6$, the number of points at which three $2$-planes intersect and span $\mathbb{R}^6$ is at most $CN^{3/2+\epsilon}$. We also get almost sharp bound on the number of joints with multiplicities. The main tools are polynomial partitioning and induction on dimension.

Abstract:Let A={a_s(mod n_s)}_{s=0}^k be a system of residue classes. With the help of cyclotomic fields we obtain a theorem which unifies several previously known results concerning system A. In particular, we show that if every integer lies in more than m=[sum_{s=1}^k 1/n_s] members of A, then for any a=0,1,2,... there are at least binom{m}{[a/n_0]} subsets I of {1,...,k} with sum_{s in I}1/n_s=a/n_0. We also characterize when any integer lies in at most m members of A, where m is a fixed positive integer.
On Erdős covering systems in global function fields

Abstract:A covering system of the integers is a finite collection of arithmetic progressions whose union is the set of integers. A well-known problem on covering systems is the minimum modulus problem posed by Erdős in 1950, who asked whether the minimum modulus in such systems with distinct moduli can be arbitrarily large. This problem was resolved by Hough in 2015, who showed that the minimum modulus is at most $10^{16}$. In 2022, Balister, Bollobás, Morris, Sahasrabudhe and Tiba reduced Hough's bound to $616,000$ by developing Hough's method. They call it the distortion method. In this paper, by applying this method, we mainly prove that there does not exist any covering system of multiplicity $s$ in any global function field of genus $g$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ for $q\geq (1.14+0.16g)e^{6.5+0.97g}s^2$. In particular, there is no covering system of $\mathbb{F}_q[x]$ with distinct moduli for $q\geq 759$.

On the Congruency-Constrained Matroid Base

Abstract:Consider a matroid where all elements are labeled with an element in $\mathbb{Z}$. We are interested in finding a base where the sum of the labels is congruent to $g \pmod m$. We show that this problem can be solved in $\tilde{O}(2^{4m} n r^{5/6})$ time for a matroid with $n$ elements and rank $r$, when $m$ is either the product of two primes or a prime power. The algorithm can be generalized to all moduli and, in fact, to all abelian groups if a classic additive combinatorics conjecture by Schrijver and Seymour holds true. We also discuss the optimization version of the problem.

On the number of sets with small sumset

Abstract:We investigate subsets with small sumset in arbitrary abelian groups. For an abelian group $G$ and an $n$-element subset $Y \subseteq G$ we show that if $m \ll s^2/(\log n)^2$, then the number of subsets $A \subseteq Y$ with $|A| = s$ and $|A + A| \leq m$ is at most \[2^{o(s)}\binom{\frac{m+\beta}{2}}{s},\] where $\beta$ is the size of the largest subgroup of $G$ of size at most $\left(1+o(1)\right)m$. This bound is sharp for $\mathbb{Z}$ and many other groups. Our result improves the one of Campos and nearly bridges the remaining gap in a conjecture of Alon, Balogh, Morris, and Samotij. We also explore the behaviour of uniformly chosen random sets $A \subseteq \{1,\ldots,n\}$ with $|A| = s$ and $|A + A| \leq m$. Under the same assumption that $m \ll s^2/(\log n)^2$, we show that with high probability there exists an arithmetic progression $P \subseteq \mathbb{Z}$ of size at most $m/2 + o(m)$ containing all but $o(s)$ elements of $A$. Analogous results are obtained for asymmetric sumsets, improving results by Campos, Coulson, Serra, and Wötzel. The main tool behind our proofs is a graph container theorem combined with a variant of an asymmetric hypergraph container theorem.

Abstract:We develop a new approach to address some classical questions concerning the size and structure of integer distance sets. Our main result is that any integer distance set in the Euclidean plane has all but a very small number of points lying on a single line or circle. From this, we deduce a near-optimal lower bound on the diameter of any non-collinear integer distance set of size $n$ and a strong upper bound on the size of any integer distance set in $[-N,N]^2$ with no three points on a line and no four points on a circle.

Abstract:The 1-3-5 conjecture of Z.-W. Sun states that any $n\in\mathbb N=\{0,1,2,\ldots\}$ can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ with $w,x,y,z\in\mathbb N$ such that $x+3y+5z$ is a square. In this paper, via the theory of ternary quadratic forms and related modular forms, we study the integer version of the 1-3-5 conjecture and related weighted sums of four squares with certain linear restrictions. Here are two typical results in this paper: (i) There is a finite set $A$ of positive integers such that any sufficiently large integer not in the set $\{16^ka:\ a\in A,\ k\in\mathbb N\}$ can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2$ with $x,y,z,w\in\mathbb Z$ and $x+3y+5z\in\{4^k:\ k\in\mathbb N\}$. (ii) Any positive integer can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+2w^2$ with $x,y,z,w\in\mathbb Z$ and $x+y+2z+2w=1$. Also, any sufficiently large integer can be written as $x^2+y^2+z^2+2w^2$ with $x,y,z,w\in\mathbb Z$ and $x+2y+3z=1$.
On supersaturation for oddtown and eventown

Abstract:We study the supersaturation problems of oddtown and eventown. Given a family $\mathcal A$ of subsets of an $n$ element set, let $op(\mathcal A)$ denote the number of distinct pairs $A,B\in \mathcal A$ for which $|A \cap B|$ is odd. We show that if $\mathcal A$ consists of $n+s$ odd-sized subsets, then $op(\mathcal A)\geq s+2$, which is tight when $s\le n-4$. This disproves a conjecture by O'Neill on the supersaturation problem of oddtown. For the supersaturation problem of eventown, we show that for large enough $n$, if $\mathcal A$ consists of $2^{\lfloor \frac n 2\rfloor}+s$ even-sized subsets, then $op(\mathcal A)\ge s\cdot2^{\lfloor \frac n 2\rfloor-1} $ for any positive integer $s\le \frac{2^{\lfloor\frac n 8\rfloor}} n$. This partially proves a conjecture by O'Neill on the supersaturation problem of eventown. Previously, the correctness of this conjecture was only verified for $s=1$ and $2$. We further provide a twice weaker lower bound in this conjecture for eventown, that is $op(\mathcal{A})\ge s\cdot 2^{\lfloor n/2\rfloor-2}$ for general $n$ and $s$ by using discrete Fourier analysis. Finally, some asymptotic results for the lower bounds of $op(\mathcal A)$ are given when $s$ is large for both problems.
