Abstract:We show that the bunkbed conjecture remains true when gluing along a vertex. As immediate corollaries, we obtain that the bunkbed conjecture is true for forests and that a minimal counterexample to the bunkbed conjecture is 2-connected.

Abstract:The bunkbed conjecture, which has featured in the folklore of probability theory since at least 1985, concerns bond percolation on the product graph $G\Box K_2$. We have two copies $G_0$ and $G_1$ of $G$, and if $x^{(0)}$ and $x^{(1)}$ are the copies of a vertex $x\in V(G)$ in $G_0$ and $G_1$ respectively, then edge $x^{(0)}x^{(1)}$ is present. The conjecture states that, for vertices $u,v\in V(G)$, percolation from $u^{(0)}$ to $v^{(0)}$ is at least as likely as percolation from $u^{(0)}$ to $v^{(1)}$. While the conjecture is widely expected to be true, having attracted significant attention, a general proof has not been forthcoming. In this paper we consider three natural generalisations of the bunkbed conjecture; to site percolation, to hypergraphs, and to directed graphs. Our main aim is to show that all these generalisations are false, and to this end we construct a sequence of counterexamples to these statements. However, we also consider under what extra conditions these generalisations might hold, and give some classes of graph for which the bunkbed conjecture for site percolation does hold.

Abstract:We consider two conjectures made in regard to the graph grabbing game, played on a vertex weighted graph. Seacrest and Seacrest conjectured in 2012 that the first player can win the graph grabbing game on any even-order bipartite graph. Eoh and Choi conjectured a strengthening of this in 2019, namely that the first player can win on any graph with no induced corona product of an odd cycle and a point. We provide a family of counterexamples to the latter conjecture, and propose a weaker conjecture in its place. We also show that the above two conjectures are equivalent when the vertex weights are all $0$ or $1$.

Abstract:A very nice result of Bárány and Lehel asserts that every finite subset $X$ or $\mathbb R^d$ can be covered by $f(d)$ $X$-boxes (i.e. each box has two antipodal points in $X$). As shown by Gyárfás and Pálvőlgyi this result would follow from the following conjecture : If a tournament admits a partition of its arc set into $k$ quasi orders, then its domination number is bounded in terms of $k$. This question is in turn implied by the Erdős-Sands-Sauer-Woodrow conjecture : If the arcs of a tournament $T$ are colored with $k$ colors, there is a set $X$ of at most $g(k)$ vertices such that for every vertex $v$ of $T$, there is a monochromatic path from $X$ to $v$. We give a short proof of this statement. We moreover show that the general Sands-Sauer-Woodrow conjecture (which as a special case implies the stable marriage theorem) is valid for directed graphs with bounded stability number. This conjecture remains however open.

Abstract:Motivated by colouring minimal Cayley graphs, in 1978, Babai conjectured that no-lonely-colour graphs have bounded chromatic number. We disprove this in a strong sense by constructing graphs of arbitrarily large girth and chromatic number that have a proper edge-colouring in which each cycle contains no colour exactly once.

On the structure of a smallest counterexample and a new class verifying the 2-Decomposition Conjecture

Abstract:The 2-Decomposition Conjecture, equivalent to the 3-Decomposition Conjecture stated in 2011 by Hoffmann-Ostenhof, claims that every connected graph $G$ with vertices of degree 2 and 3, for which $G \setminus E(C)$ is disconnected for every cycle $C$, admits a decomposition into a spanning tree and a matching. In this work we present two main results focused on developing a strategy to prove the 2-Decomposition Conjecture. One of them is a list of structural properties of a minimum counterexample for this conjecture. Among those properties, we prove that a minimum counterexample has girth at least 5 and its vertices of degree 2 are at distance at least 3. Motivated by the class of smallest counterexamples, we show that the 2-Decomposition Conjecture holds for graphs whose vertices of degree 3 induce a collection of cacti in which each vertex belongs to a cycle. The core of the proof of this result may possibly be used in an inductive proof of the 2-Decomposition Conjecture based on a parameter that relates the number of vertices of degree 2 and 3 in a minimum counterexample.

New results in vertex sedentariness

Abstract:A vertex in a graph is said to be sedentary if a quantum state assigned on that vertex tends to stay on that vertex. Under mild conditions, we show that the direct product and join operations preserve vertex sedentariness. We also completely characterize sedentariness in blow-up graphs. These results allow us to construct new infinite families of graphs with sedentary vertices. We prove that a vertex with a twin is either sedentary or admits pretty good state transfer. Moreover, we give a complete characterization of twin vertices that are sedentary, and provide sharp bounds on their sedentariness. As an application, we determine the conditions in which perfect state transfer, pretty good state transfer and sedentariness occur in complete bipartite graphs and threshold graphs of any order.

Abstract:The occupancy fraction of a graph is a (normalized) measure on the size of independent sets under the hard-core model, depending on a variable (fugacity) $\lambda.$ We present a criterion for finding the graph with minimum occupancy fraction among graphs with a fixed order, and disprove five conjectures on the extremes of the occupancy fraction and (normalized) independence polynomial for certain graph classes of regular graphs with a given girth.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that every $(2^{n-1}+1)$-vertex induced subgraph of the $n$-dimensional cube graph has maximum degree at least $\sqrt{n}$. This result is best possible, and improves a logarithmic lower bound shown by Chung, Füredi, Graham and Seymour in 1988. As a direct consequence, we prove that the sensitivity and degree of a boolean function are polynomially related, solving an outstanding foundational problem in theoretical computer science, the Sensitivity Conjecture of Nisan and Szegedy.

Abstract:A graph is nearly embedded in a surface if it consists of graph $G_0$ that is embedded in the surface, together with a bounded number of vortices having no large transactions. It is shown that every large wall (or grid minor) in a nearly embedded graph, many rows of which intersect the embedded subgraph $G_0$ of the near-embedding, contains a large subwall that is planarly embedded within $G_0$. This result provides some hidden details needed for a strong version of the Robertson and Seymour's excluded minor theorem as presented in [K. Kawarabayashi, B. Mohar, Some recent progress and applications in graph minor theory, Graphs Combin. 23 (2007) 1-46].

Abstract:We deal with a variant of the 1–2–3 Conjecture introduced by Gao, Wang, and Wu (Graphs Combin 32:1415–1421, 2016) . This variant asks whether all graphs can have their edges labelled with 1 and 2 so that when computing the sums of labels incident to the vertices, no monochromatic cycle appears. In the aforementioned seminal work, the authors mainly verified their conjecture for a few classes of graphs, namely graphs with maximum average degree at most 3 and series–parallel graphs, and observed that it also holds for simple classes of graphs (cycles, complete graphs, and complete bipartite graphs). In this work, we provide a deeper study of this conjecture, establishing strong connections with other, more or less distant notions of graph theory. While this conjecture connects quite naturally to other notions and problems surrounding the 1–2–3 Conjecture, it can also be expressed so that it relates to notions such as the vertex-arboricity of graphs. Exploiting such connections, we provide easy proofs that the conjecture holds for bipartite graphs and 2-degenerate graphs, thus generalising some of the results of Gao, Wang, and Wu. We also prove that the conjecture holds for graphs with maximum average degree less than , thereby strengthening another of their results. Notably, this also implies the conjecture holds for planar graphs with girth at least 5. All along the way, we also raise observations and results highlighting why the conjecture might be of greater interest.

Abstract:Confirming a conjecture posed by Caro, it was shown by Chen and Yu that every graph $G$ with $n$ vertices and at most $2n-4$ edges has a stable cutset, which is a stable set of vertices whose removal disconnects the graph. Le and Pfender showed that all graphs with $n$ vertices and $2n-3$ edges without stable cutset arise recursively glueing together triangles and triangular prisms along an edge or triangle. Le and Pfender's proof contains a gap, which we fill in the present article.

Abstract:The bondage number of a graph is the smallest number of its edges whose removal results in a graph having a larger domination number. We provide constant upper bounds for the bondage number of graphs on topological surfaces, improve upper bounds for the bondage number in terms of the maximum vertex degree and the orientable and non-orientable genera of the graph, and show tight lower bounds for the number of vertices of graphs 2-cell embeddable on topological surfaces of a given genus. Also, we provide stronger upper bounds for graphs with no triangles and graphs with the number of vertices larger than a certain threshold in terms of the graph genera. This settles Teschner's Conjecture in positive for almost all graphs.

Abstract:Woodall (and Seymour independently) in 2001 proposed a conjecture that every graph $G$ contains every complete bipartite graph on $\chi(G)$ vertices as a minor, where $\chi(G)$ is the chromatic number of $G$. In this paper, we prove that for each positive integer $\ell$ with $2\ell \leq \chi(G)$, each graph $G$ with independence number two contains a $K^{\ell}_{\ell,\chi(G)-\ell}$-minor, implying that Seymour and Woodall's conjecture holds for graphs with independence number two, where $K^{\ell}_{\ell,\chi(G)-\ell}$ is the graph obtained from $K_{\ell,\chi(G)-\ell}$ by making every pair of vertices on the side of the bipartition of size $\ell$ adjacent.

Abstract:The arboricity $\Gamma(G)$ of an undirected graph $G = (V,E)$ is the minimal number such that $E$ can be partitioned into $\Gamma(G)$ forests. Nash-Williams' formula states that $k = \lceil \gamma(G) \rceil$, where $\gamma(G)$ is the maximum of ${|E_H|}/(|V_H| -1)$ over all subgraphs $(V_H, E_H)$ of $G$ with $|V_H| \geq 2$. The Strong Nine Dragon Tree Conjecture states that if $\gamma(G) \leq k + \frac{d}{d+k+1}$ for $k, d \in \mathbb N_0$, then there is a partition of the edge set of $G$ into $k+1$ forests such that one forest has at most $d$ edges in each connected component. We settle the conjecture for $d \leq k + 1$. For $d \leq 2(k+1)$, we cannot prove the conjecture, however we show that there exists a partition in which the connected components in one forest have at most $d + \lceil k \cdot \frac{d}{k+1} \rceil - k$ edges. As an application of this theorem, we show that every $5$-edge-connected planar graph $G$ has a $\frac{5}{6}$-thin spanning tree. This theorem is best possible, in the sense that we cannot replace $5$-edge-connected with $4$-edge-connected, even if we replace $\frac{5}{6}$ with any positive real number less than $1$. This strengthens a result of Merker and Postle which showed $6$-edge-connected planar graphs have a $\frac{18}{19}$-thin spanning tree.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a conjecture of Andries E. Brouwer from 1996 regarding the minimum number of vertices of a strongly regular graph whose removal disconnects the graph into non-singleton components.We show that strongly regular graphs constructed from copolar spaces and from the more general spaces called Delta-spaces are counter-examples to Brouwer's Conjecture. Using J.I. Hall's characterization of finite reduced copolar spaces, we find that the triangular graphs T (m), the symplectic graphs Sp(2r,q) over the field F-q (for any q prime power), and the strongly regular graphs constructed from the hyperbolic quadrics O+(2r, 2) and from the elliptic quadrics O-(2r, 2) over the field F-2, respectively, are counter-examples to Brouwer's Conjecture. For each of these graphs, we determine precisely the minimum number of vertices whose removal disconnects the graph into non-singleton components. While we are not aware of an analogue of Hall's characterization theorem for Delta-spaces, we show that complements of the point graphs of certain finite generalized quadrangles are point graphs of Delta-spaces and thus, yield other counterexamples to Brouwer's Conjecture. We prove that Brouwer's Conjecture is true for many families of strongly regular graphs including the conference graphs, the generalized quadrangles GQ(q, q) graphs, the lattice graphs, the Latin square graphs, the strongly regular graphs with smallest eigen-value -2 (except the triangular graphs) and the primitive strongly regular graphs with at most 30 vertices except for few cases. We leave as an open problem determining the best general lower bound for the minimum size of a disconnecting set of vertices of a strongly regular graph, whose removal disconnects the graph into non-singleton components.
