Abstract:We give an explicit counterexample to the Bunkbed Conjecture introduced by Kasteleyn in 1985. The counterexample is given by a planar graph on $7222$ vertices, and is built on the recent work of Hollom (2024).

Abstract:The bunkbed conjecture, which has featured in the folklore of probability theory since at least 1985, concerns bond percolation on the product graph $G\Box K_2$. We have two copies $G_0$ and $G_1$ of $G$, and if $x^{(0)}$ and $x^{(1)}$ are the copies of a vertex $x\in V(G)$ in $G_0$ and $G_1$ respectively, then edge $x^{(0)}x^{(1)}$ is present. The conjecture states that, for vertices $u,v\in V(G)$, percolation from $u^{(0)}$ to $v^{(0)}$ is at least as likely as percolation from $u^{(0)}$ to $v^{(1)}$. While the conjecture is widely expected to be true, having attracted significant attention, a general proof has not been forthcoming. In this paper we consider three natural generalisations of the bunkbed conjecture; to site percolation, to hypergraphs, and to directed graphs. Our main aim is to show that all these generalisations are false, and to this end we construct a sequence of counterexamples to these statements. However, we also consider under what extra conditions these generalisations might hold, and give some classes of graph for which the bunkbed conjecture for site percolation does hold.

Abstract:S. Negami conjectured in $1988$ that a connected graph has a finite planar cover if and only if it embeds in the projective plane. It follows from the works of D. Archdeacon, M. Fellows, P. Hliněný, and S. Negami that this conjecture is true if the graph $K_{1, 2, 2, 2}$ has no finite planar cover. We prove a number of structural results about putative finite planar covers of $K_{1,2,2,2}$ that may be of independent interest. We then apply these results to prove that $K_{1, 2, 2, 2}$ has no planar cover of fold number less than $14$.

Abstract:The occupancy fraction of a graph is a (normalized) measure on the size of independent sets under the hard-core model, depending on a variable (fugacity) $\lambda.$ We present a criterion for finding the graph with minimum occupancy fraction among graphs with a fixed order, and disprove five conjectures on the extremes of the occupancy fraction and (normalized) independence polynomial for certain graph classes of regular graphs with a given girth.

Abstract:Motivated by colouring minimal Cayley graphs, in 1978, Babai conjectured that no-lonely-colour graphs have bounded chromatic number. We disprove this in a strong sense by constructing graphs of arbitrarily large girth and chromatic number that have a proper edge-colouring in which each cycle contains no colour exactly once.

Abstract:Kostochka and Woodall (2001) conjectured that the square of every graph has the same chromatic number and list chromatic number. In 2015 Kim and Park disproved this conjecture for non-bipartite and bipartite graphs. It was asked by several authors whether this conjecture holds for bipartite graphs with small degrees, claw-free graphs, or line graphs. In this paper, we introduce cubic counterexamples to this conjecture to solve three open problems posed by Kim and Park~(2015), Kim, Kwon, and Park~(2015), and Dai, Wang, Yang, and Yu~(2018). In particular, we disprove a planar version of this conjecture proposed by Havet, Heuvel, McDiarmid, and Reed (2017). Moreover, we formulated a revised version for this conjecture in bipartite graphs $G$ by imposing the condition $\chi(G^2) \ge \frac{1}{2} \Delta(G^2)+1$, where $G^2$ denotes the square of $G$ and the other two parameter denote its chromatic number and maximum degree. This new version still implies the List Total Coloring Conjecture. On the other hand, we introduce a family of counterexamples obtained from line graphs $L(G)$ of bipartite planar graphs $G$ with sufficiently large maximum degree satisfying $\chi(L(G)^2) \ge \frac{1}{2} \Delta(L(G)^2)$+n, where $n$ is a sufficiently large integer. Finally, we investigate non-chromatic-choosable graphs with bounded maximum degree in bipartite and planar graphs. Consequently, we improve a result due to Bessy, Havet, and Palaysi (2002) and strengthen a result due to Glebov, Kostochka, and Tashkinov~(2005). In addition, we characterize non-chromatic-choosable graphs of order at most $9$ and settle a question posed by Nelsen~(2019).

Abstract:Sidorenko's conjecture states that, for all bipartite graphs $H$, quasirandom graphs contain asymptotically the minimum number of copies of $H$ taken over all graphs with the same order and edge density. Abstract:Circuit diameters of polyhedra are a fundamental tool for studying the complexity of circuit augmentation schemes for linear programming and for finding lower bounds on combinatorial diameters. The main open problem in this area is the circuit diameter conjecture, the analogue of the Hirsch conjecture in the circuit setting. A natural question is whether the well-known counterexamples to the Hirsch conjecture carry over. Previously, Stephen and Yusun showed that the Klee-Walkup counterexample to the unbounded Hirsch conjecture does not transfer to the circuit setting. Our main contribution is to show that the original counterexamples for the other variants, for bounded polytopes and using monotone walks, also do not transfer. Our results rely on new observations on structural properties of these counterexamples. To resolve the bounded case, we exploit the geometry of certain $2$-faces of the polytopes underlying all known bounded Hirsch counterexamples in Santos' work. For Todd's monotone Hirsch counterexample, we provide two alternative approaches. The first one uses sign-compatible circuit walks, and the second one uses the observation that Todd's polytope is anti-blocking. Along the way, we enumerate all linear programs over the polytope and find four new orientations that contradict the monotone Hirsch conjecture, while the remaining $7107$ satisfy the bound.

Abstract:Following their resolution of the Erdős $B+B+t$ problem, Kra Moreira, Richter, and Robertson posed a number of questions and conjectures related to infinite configurations in positive density subsets of the integers and other amenable groups. We give a negative answer to several of these questions and conjectures by producing families of counterexamples based on a construction of Ernst Straus.

Abstract:The Turán number of a graph $H$, denoted $\mbox{ex}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph with no subgraph isomorphic to $H$. Solymosi conjectured that if $H$ is any graph and $\mbox{ex}(n,H) = O(n^{\alpha})$ where $\alpha > 1$, then any $n$-vertex graph with the property that each edge lies in exactly one copy of $H$ has $o(n^{\alpha})$ edges. This can be viewed as conjecturing a possible extension of the removal lemma to sparse graphs, and is well-known to be true when $H$ is a non-bipartite graph, in particular when $H$ is a triangle, due to Ruzsa and Szemerédi. Using Sidon sets we exhibit infinitely many bipartite graphs $H$ for which the conjecture is false.

Abstract:The 2-Decomposition Conjecture, equivalent to the 3-Decomposition Conjecture stated in 2011 by Hoffmann-Ostenhof, claims that every connected graph G with vertices of degree 2 and 3, for which is disconnected for every cycle C , admits a decomposition into a spanning tree and a matching. In this work we present two main results focused on developing a strategy to prove the 2-Decomposition Conjecture. One of them is a list of structural properties of a minimum counterexample for this conjecture. Among those properties, we prove that a minimum counterexample has girth at least 5 and its vertices of degree 2 are at distance at least 3. Motivated by the class of smallest counterexamples, we show that the 2-Decomposition Conjecture holds for graphs whose vertices of degree 3 induce a collection of cacti in which each vertex belongs to a cycle. The core of the proof of this result may possibly be used in an inductive proof of the 2-Decomposition Conjecture based on a parameter that relates the number of vertices of degree 2 and 3 in a minimum counterexample.

Abstract:A very nice result of Bárány and Lehel asserts that every finite subset $X$ or $\mathbb R^d$ can be covered by $f(d)$ $X$-boxes (i.e. each box has two antipodal points in $X$). As shown by Gyárfás and Pálvőlgyi this result would follow from the following conjecture : If a tournament admits a partition of its arc set into $k$ quasi orders, then its domination number is bounded in terms of $k$. This question is in turn implied by the Erdős-Sands-Sauer-Woodrow conjecture : If the arcs of a tournament $T$ are colored with $k$ colors, there is a set $X$ of at most $g(k)$ vertices such that for every vertex $v$ of $T$, there is a monochromatic path from $X$ to $v$. We give a short proof of this statement. We moreover show that the general Sands-Sauer-Woodrow conjecture (which as a special case implies the stable marriage theorem) is valid for directed graphs with bounded stability number. This conjecture remains however open.

Abstract:The Knight Move Conjecture claims that the Khovanov homology of any knot decomposes as direct sums of some "knight move" pairs and a single "pawn move" pair. This is true for instance whenever the Lee spectral sequence from Khovanov homology to Q^2 converges on the second page, as it does for all alternating knots and knots with unknotting number at most 2. We present a counterexample to the Knight Move Conjecture. For this knot, the Lee spectral sequence admits a nontrivial differential of bidegree (1,8).

Abstract:This paper is purely expositional. The statement of the Kuratowski graph planarity criterion is simple and well-known. However, its classical proof is not easy. In this paper we present the Makarychev proof (with further simplifications by Prasolov, Telishev, Zaslavski and the author) which is possibly the simplest. In the Rusian version before the proof we present all the necessary definitions, and afterwards we state some close results on graphs and more general spaces. The paper is accessible for students familiar with the notion of a graph, and could be an interesting easy reading for mature mathematicians.

Abstract:Bollobás proved that for every $k$ and $\ell$ such that $k\mathbb{Z}+\ell$ contains an even number, an $n$-vertex graph containing no cycle of length $\ell \bmod k$ can contain at most a linear number of edges. The precise (or asymptotic) value of the maximum number of edges in such a graph is known for very few pairs $\ell$ and $k$.
