Abstract:We give a new proof of K\"onig's theorem and generalize the Gallai-Edmonds decomposition to balanced hypergraphs in two different ways. Based on our decompositions we give two new characterizations of balanced hypergraphs and show some properties of matchings and vertex cover in balanced hypergraphs.

Abstract:Two new proofs are provided, offering two new perspectives on Godbersen's conjecture. One of the proofs utilizes Helly's theorem to provide a concise and elegant proof of the inequality in Godbersen's conjecture. The other proof utilizes the Brunn-Minkowski inequality to provide a completely new proof of the inclusion $-K\subset nK$ for convex bodies $K$ with centroid at the origin, thereby proving Godbersen's conjecture.

Abstract:K\H onig's theorem says that the vertex cover number of every bipartite graph is at most its matching number (in fact they are equal since, trivially, the matching number is at most the vertex cover number). An equivalent formulation of K\H onig's theorem is that in every $2$-colouring of the edges of a graph $G$, the number of monochromatic components needed to cover the vertex set of $G$ is at most the independence number of $G$. We prove the following strengthening of K\H onig's theorem: In every $2$-colouring of the edges of a graph $G$, the number of monochromatic subgraphs of bounded diameter needed to cover the vertex set of $G$ is at most the independence number of $G$.

Abstract:Liu and Ma [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 2018] conjectured that every $2$-connected non-bipartite graph with minimum degree at least $k+1$ contains $\lceil k/2\rceil $ cycles with consecutive odd lengths. In particular, they showed that this conjecture holds when $k$ is even. In this paper, we confirm this conjecture for any $k\in \mathbb N$. Moreover, we also improve some previous results about cycles of consecutive lengths.

Abstract:A theorem of Mader shows that every graph with average degree at least eight has a K 6 minor, and this is false if we replace eight by any smaller constant. Replacing average degree by minimum degree seems to make little difference: we do not know whether all graphs with minimum degree at least seven have K 6 minors, but minimum degree six is certainly not enough. For every ε > 0 there are arbitrarily large graphs with average degree at least 8 − ε and minimum degree at least six, with no K 6 minor. But what if we restrict ourselves to bipartite graphs? The first statement remains true: for every ε > 0 there are arbitrarily large bipartite graphs with average degree at least 8 − ε and no K 6 minor. But surprisingly, going to minimum degree now makes a significant difference. We will show that every bipartite graph with minimum degree at least six has a K 6 minor. Indeed, it is enough that every vertex in the larger part of the bipartition has degree at least six.

Abstract:Bollobás proved that for every $k$ and $\ell$ such that $k\mathbb{Z}+\ell$ contains an even number, an $n$-vertex graph containing no cycle of length $\ell \bmod k$ can contain at most a linear number of edges. The precise (or asymptotic) value of the maximum number of edges in such a graph is known for very few pairs $\ell$ and $k$. In this work we precisely determine the maximum number of edges in a graph containing no cycle of length $0 \bmod 4$.

Abstract:Recently, Andrews and El Bachraoui (2024) proved three very interesting $q$-series identities, from which three simple looking identities involving certain restricted partitions into distinct even parts and $4$-regular partitions follow. In this short note, we give combinatorial proofs of these identities. We also prove the counterpart identities for the restricted partitions into distinct odd parts.

Abstract:So far there has been elementary proof for Frobenius's theorem only in special cases: if the complement is solvable, see e.g. [3], if the complement is of even order, see e.g. [6]. In the first section we consider the case, when the order of the complement is odd. We define a graph the vertices of which are the set K# of elements of our Frobenius group with 0 fixed points. Two vertices are connected with an edge if and only if the corresponding elements commute. We prove with elementary methods that K is a normal subgroup in G if and only if there exists an element x in K# such that all elements of K# belonging to the connected component C of K# containing x are at most distance 2 from c and NG(C) is not a -group, where is the set of prime divisors of the Frobenius complement of G. In the second section we generalize the case when the order of the complement is even, proving that the Frobenius kernel is a normal subgroup, if a fixed element a of the complement, the order of which is a minimal prime divisor of the order of the complement, generates a solvable subgroup together with any ofits conjugates. In the third section we prove a generalization of the Glauberman-Thompson normal p-complement theorem, and using this wegive another sufficient condition for the Frobenius kernel to be a normal subgroup for |G| odd, namely we prove this under the conditionthat all the Sylow normalizers in G intersect some of the complements

Abstract:We give a short new proof of the Arendt-Chernoff-Kato theorem, which characterizes generators of positive C0 semigroups in order unit spaces. The proof avoids half-norms and subdifferentials, and is based on a sufficient condition for an operator to have positive inverse, which is new even for matrices.

Abstract:An $(n,k,t)$-graph is a graph on $n$ vertices in which every set of $k$ vertices contain a clique on $t$ vertices. Turán's Theorem (complemented) states that the unique minimum $(n,k,2)$-graph is a disjoint union of cliques. We prove that minimum $(n,k,t)$-graphs are always disjoint unions of cliques for any $t$ (despite nonuniqueness of extremal examples), thereby generalizing Turán's Theorem and confirming two conjectures of Hoffman et al.

Elementary Proofs of Two Congruences for Partitions with Odd Parts Repeated at Most Twice

Abstract:In a recent article on overpartitions, Merca considered the auxiliary function $a(n)$ which counts the number of partitions of $n$ where odd parts are repeated at most twice (and there are no restrictions on the even parts). In the course of his work, Merca proved the following: For all $n\geq 0$, \begin{align*} a(4n+2) &\equiv 0 \pmod{2}, \textrm{\ \ and} \\ a(4n+3) &\equiv 0 \pmod{2}. \end{align*} Merca then indicates that a classical proof of these congruences would be very interesting. The goal of this short note is to fulfill Merca's request by providing two truly elementary (classical) proofs of these congruences.

Abstract:We give a new and self-contained proof for an alternative form of Tunnell’s theorem on congruent numbers. The proof relies on more knowledge on quadratic forms with less calculation than Tunnell’s proof. The approach is based on our observation that the equality $$\#\{(x,y,z,w) \in \mathbb {Z}^4|p=2x^2+3y^2+3z^2+4w^2+2yz\}=\#\{(x,y,z) \in \mathbb {Z}^3|p^2=2x^2+4y^2+9z^2-4yz\}$$ holds for any odd prime p. The same method is applied to the elliptic curves $$E_n:~y^2=x^3+n^2x$$ and $$E_{n}:~~y^2=x(x-n)(x+3n)(E_{-n}:~~y^2=x(x+n)(x-3n))$$ ( $$\pi /3$$ ( $$2\pi /3$$ )-congruent elliptic curves), where we list, without proof, the analogous results. A series of criteria for congruent numbers are given. In particular, for a prime p, we show that if $$p\equiv 1\pmod {8}$$ is a congruent number then the 8-rank of $$K_2O_{\mathbb {Q}(\sqrt{p})}$$ equals one; if $$p\equiv 1\pmod {16}$$ with $$h(-p)\not \equiv h(-2p)\pmod {16}$$ then 2p is not a congruent number; and if $$p\equiv 1, q\equiv 3\pmod {8}$$ are two primes with $$h(-pq)\not \equiv h(-p)\pmod {8}$$ then pq is not a congruent number.

Abstract:We collect some of our favorite proofs of Brooks' Theorem, highlighting advantages and extensions of each. The proofs illustrate some of the major techniques in graph coloring, such as greedy coloring, Kempe chains, hitting sets, and the Kernel Lemma. We also discuss standard strengthenings of vertex coloring, such as list coloring, online list coloring, and Alon--Tarsi orientations, since analogues of Brooks' Theorem hold in each context. We conclude with two conjectures along the lines of Brooks' Theorem that are much stronger, the Borodin--Kostochka Conjecture and Reed's Conjecture.

Abstract:We examine a class of geometric theorems on cyclic 2n-gons. We prove that if we take n disjoint pairs of sides, each pair separated by an even number of polygon sides, then there is a linear combination of the angles between those sides which is constant. We present a formula for the linear combination, which provides a theorem statement in terms of those angles. We describe a program which uses this result to generate new geometry proof problems and their solutions.

Abstract:We construct a bijection between certain Deodhar components of a braid variety constructed from an affine Kac-Moody group of type $A_{n-1}$ and vertex-labeled trees on $n$ vertices. By an argument of Galashin, Lam, and Williams using Opdam's trace formula in the affine Hecke algebra and an identity due to Haglund, we obtain an elaborate new proof for the enumeration of the number of vertex-labeled trees on $n$ vertices.
