Abstract:In this paper, we consider the problem of determining which automorphisms of a smooth quartic surface $S \subset \mathbb{P}^3$ are induced by a Cremona transformation of $\mathbb{P}^3$. We provide the first steps towards a complete solution of this problem when $\rho(S)=2$. In particular, we give several examples of quartics whose automorphism groups are generated by involutions, but no non-trivial automorphism is induced by a Cremona transformation of $\mathbb{P}^3$, giving a negative answer for Oguiso's question of whether every automorphism of finite order of a smooth quartic surface $S\subset \mathbb{P}^3$ is induced by a Cremona transformation.

We show results devoted to smooth plane quartics that are invariant under the action of the elementary abelian group of type $[2,2,2]$, and we study geometric properties of the smooth plane quartic having automorphism group of order $48$.

Abstract:We prove that a general three-dimensional quartic $V$ in the complex projective space ${\mathbb P}^4$, the only singularity of which is a double point of rank 3, is a birationally rigid variety. Its group of birational self-maps is, up to the finite subgroup of biregular automorphisms, a free product of 25 cyclic groups of order 2. It follows that the complement to the set of birationally rigid factorial quartics with terminal singularities is of codimension at least 3 in the natural parameter space.

This model is canonical for Picard number greater than 10. Abstract:Given a smooth genus three curve $C$, the moduli space of rank two stable vector bundles on C with trivial determinant embeds in $\mathbb{P}^8$ as a hypersurface whose singular locus is the Kummer threefold of $C$; this hypersurface is the Coble quartic. Gruson, Sam and Weyman realized that this quartic could be constructed from a general skew-symmetric fourform in eight variables. Using the lines contained in the quartic, we prove that a similar construction allows to recover SU$_C(2, L)$, the moduli space of rank two stable vector bundles on C with fixed determinant of odd degree L, as a subvariety of $G(2, 8)$. In fact, each point $p \in C$ defines a natural embedding of SU$_C(2, \mathcal{O}(p))$ in $G(2, 8)$. We show that, for the generic such embedding, there exists a unique quadratic section of the Grassmannian which is singular exactly along the image of SU$_C(2, \mathcal{O}(p))$, and thus deserves to be coined the Coble quadric of the pointed curve $(C, p)$.

On two-elementary K3 surfaces with finite automorphism group

Abstract:We study complex algebraic K3 surfaces of Picard ranks 11, 12, and 13 of finite automorphism group that admit a Jacobian elliptic fibration with a section of order two. We prove that the K3 surfaces admit a birational model isomorphic to a projective quartic hypersurface and construct geometrically the frames of all supported Jacobian elliptic fibrations. We determine the dual graphs of all smooth rational curves for these K3 surfaces, the polarizing divisors, and the embedding of the reducible fibers in each frame into the corresponding dual graph.

Abstract:We describe the invariants of plane quartic curves -- nonhyperelliptic genus 3 curves in their canonical model -- as determined by Dixmier and Ohno, with application to the classification of curves with given structure. In particular, we determine modular equations for the strata in the moduli space $\Me_3$ of plane quartics which have at least seven hyperflexes, and obtain an computational characterization of curves in these strata.

Abstract:In this work we compute the Dixmier invariants and bitangents of the plane quartics with 3,6 or 9-cyclic automorphisms, we find that a quartic curve with 6-cyclic automorphism will have 3 horizontal bitangents which form an asysgetic triple. We also discuss the linear matrix representation problem of such curves, and find a degree 6 equation of 1 variable which solves the symbolic solution of the linear matrix representation problem for the curve with 6-cyclic automorphism.

Abstract:In this paper, we continue the study of boundedness questions for (simply connected) smooth Calabi-Yau threefolds commenced in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1706.01268" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1706.01268">arXiv:1706.01268</a>. The diffeomorphism class of such a threefold is known to be determined up to finitely many possibilities by the integral middle cohomology and two integral forms on the integral second cohomology, namely the cubic cup-product form and the linear form given by cup-product with the second chern class. The question addressed in both papers is whether knowledge of these cubic and linear forms determines the threefold up to finitely many families, that is the moduli of such threefolds is bounded. If this is true, then in particular the middle integral cohomology would be bounded by knowing these two forms. Crucial to this question is the study of rigid non-movable surfaces on the threefold, which are the irreducible surfaces that deform with any small deformation of the complex structure of the threefold but for which no multiple moves on the threefold. We showed in the previous paper that if there are no such surfaces, then the answer to the above question is yes. Moreover if the Picard number is 2, the answer was shown to be yes without any further assumptions on the Calabi-Yau threefold. The main results of this paper are for Picard number 3, where we prove boundedness in the case where there is at most one rigid non-movable surface, assuming the cubic form is smooth (thereby defining a real elliptic curve); in the two cases where the Hessian curve is singular, we also assume that the line defined by the second chern class does not intersect this curve at an inflexion point. In addition to the methods described in the previous paper, a further crucial tool in the proofs will be the classical Steinian involution on the Hessian of an elliptic curve.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{X}$ be a smooth Fano threefold over the complex numbers of Picard rank $1$ with finite automorphism group. We give numerical restrictions on the order of the automorphism group $\mathrm{Aut}(\mathcal{X})$ provided the genus $g(\mathcal{X})\leq 10$ and $\mathcal{X}$ is not an ordinary smooth Gushel-Mukai threefold. More precisely, we show that the order $|\mathrm{Aut}(\mathcal{X})|$ divides a certain explicit number depending on the genus of $\mathcal{X}$. We use a classification of Fano threefolds in terms of complete intersections in homogeneous varieties and the previous paper of A. Gorinov and the author regarding the topology of spaces of regular sections.
