Abstract:Resource allocation in adversarial environments is a fundamental challenge across various domains, from corporate competition to military strategy. This article examines the impact of compromising an opponent's strategic intent in the context of General Lotto games, a class of resource allocation problems. We consider a scenario where one player, termed the "Breaker", has access to partial information about their opponent's strategy through a binary sensor. This sensor reveals whether the opponent's allocated resources exceed a certain threshold. Our analysis provides a comprehensive characterization of equilibrium strategies and payoffs for both players under this information structure. Through numerical studies, we demonstrate that the information provided by the sensor can significantly improve the Breaker's performance.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to address the problem of how to optimize resource allocation in adversarial environments by partially obtaining the strategic intentions of the opponent. Specifically, the paper studies how such information asymmetry affects the equilibrium strategies and payoffs of both parties in the General Lotto game when one party (referred to as the "Breaker") can obtain information about whether the other party's (referred to as the "Attacker") resource allocation exceeds a certain threshold through a binary sensor. ### Background and Motivation - **Resource Allocation Challenge**: In adversarial environments, such as business competition or military strategy, effective resource allocation is a fundamental challenge. - **Importance of Information**: Many historical examples show that obtaining strategic information about the opponent can significantly enhance one party's competitive advantage, such as the Allies breaking the Enigma code during World War II. ### Research Questions - **Impact of Information Asymmetry**: The paper explores how information asymmetry changes the equilibrium outcomes in the General Lotto game when the Breaker can partially understand the Attacker's resource allocation strategy. - **Specific Scenario**: The Breaker obtains information about whether the Attacker's resource allocation exceeds a certain threshold through a binary sensor and adjusts its strategy based on this information. ### Main Contributions - **Theoretical Analysis**: The paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the equilibrium strategies and payoffs of the Breaker and Attacker under different parameter combinations (including resource budgets and thresholds). - **Numerical Experiments**: Through numerical simulations, it demonstrates the significant performance improvement of the Breaker using a binary sensor to obtain information compared to the classic setting (without a sensor). ### Conclusion - **Value of Information**: The study shows that by partially obtaining the opponent's strategic information, the Breaker can gain a significant advantage in resource allocation. - **Future Work**: Future research will focus on further refining the granularity of sensor signals and deriving the optimal sensor threshold. In summary, this paper delves into the value and impact of obtaining the opponent's strategic information in adversarial resource allocation problems by introducing a mechanism of information asymmetry.
