Abstract:We introduce General Lotto games with Scouts: a General Lotto game with asymmetric information. There are two players, Red and Blue, who both allocate resources to a field. However, scouting capabilities afford Blue to gain information, with some probability, on the number of Red's resources before allocating his own. We derive optimal strategies for this game in the case of a single field. In addition we provide upper and lower bounds of the value of the game in a multi-stage case with multiple battlefields. We devise several ways to characterise the influence of information versus strength. We conclude by drawing qualitative insights from these characterisations and the game values, and draw parallels with military practice.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how information asymmetry affects players' optimal strategies in resource - allocation games. Specifically, the paper introduces a new variant of the General Lotto game - the General Lotto game with scouting function (GL - S), in which one player (the blue player) can obtain the resource - allocation information of the other player (the red player) in advance with a certain probability. Through this setting, the research aims to explore the following two main questions:
1. **What are the players' optimal strategies under the given information and power configurations?**
- When the blue player obtains part or all of the red player's resource - allocation information, how can the blue player make efficient use of this information?
- How can the red player adjust its strategy to deal with the situation where the blue player may obtain information?
2. **How to choose the best combination of information and power configurations given a budget?**
- If the proportion of information (such as scouting drones) and power (such as weaponry) can be freely chosen, which combination can maximize the expected number of victories?
### Specific Problem Description
#### 1. General Lotto Game on a Single Battlefield
The paper first analyzes the General Lotto game with scouting function (GL - S) on a single battlefield. In this case, the red player first allocates resources, and then the blue player has a certain probability (denoted by \( u \)) of learning about the red player's resource allocation. According to the resource ratio \( \frac{B}{R} \) and the scouting probability \( u \), the paper divides the analysis into three cases:
- **Case 1**: \( 1\leq\frac{B}{R} \)
- **Case 2**: \( u\leq\frac{B}{R}\leq1 \)
- **Case 3**: \( \frac{B}{R}\leq u \)
For each case, the paper derives the optimal strategy and calculates the value \( V \) of the game.
#### 2. General Lotto Game in Multi - stage and Multi - battlefield
Next, the paper extends to the case of multi - stage and multi - battlefield (GL - MS). In this setting, the red and blue players first allocate their total resources to multiple battlefields, and then play the GL - S game on each battlefield. The paper provides upper and lower bounds to estimate the value of the multi - stage game and discusses when these bounds coincide, thus determining the optimal strategy.
### Main Contributions
- Provides the optimal strategy and its value for the single - battlefield GL - S game.
- For the multi - stage and multi - battlefield GL - MS game, gives upper and lower bound estimates and discusses when these bounds coincide.
- Through numerical experiments and theoretical analysis, reveals the trade - off relationship between information and power, providing valuable insights for military practice.
### Conclusion
By introducing the General Lotto game with scouting function, the paper explores the impact of information asymmetry on resource allocation. The research results show that under different conditions, the value of information and the importance of power will change, which is of great significance for understanding and optimizing strategic decisions in practice.
