Abstract:Given an arithmetic lattice of the unitary group U(3,1) arising from a hermitian form over a CM-field, we show that all unitary representations of U(3,1) with nonzero cohomology contribute to the cohomology of the attached arithmetic complex 3-manifold, at least when we pass to a finite-index subgroup of the given arithmetic lattice.

Abstract:Suppose that X is an orbifold. In general, KX is an orbifold vector bundle or a Q-divisor only. When the X is so called Gorenstein, KX is a bundle or a divisor. For Gorenstein orbifold, a resolution π : Y → X is called a crepant resolution if πKX = KY . Here, ”crepant” can be viewed as a minimality condition with respect to canonical bundle. Crepant resolution always exists when dimension is two or three. A nice way to construct it is to use Hilbert scheme of points. However, the crepant resolution in dimension three is not unique. Different crepant resolutions are connected by flops. When the dimension is bigger than four, the crepant resolution does not always exist. It is an extremely interesting problem in algebraic geometry to find out when it does exist. One of famous example is Hilbert scheme of points of algebraic surfaces, which is a crepant resolution of the symmetry product of an algebraic surface. It has long been an interesting problem to compute cohomology of Hilbert scheme of points of algebraic surfaces. A great deal of works has been done by algebraic geometors. As far as the author’s knowledge, everything has been computed except its ring structure. Among all the progress, a less known but crucial ingredient is the link to the orbifold cohomology of the symmetry product. Suppose that M is an algebraic surface. We use M [n] to denote the Hilbert scheme of points of length n of M . In 1994, in order to explain the modularity of the generating function ∑∞ n=1 χ(M [n])qn computed by Göttsche [G], Vafa-Witten [VW] computed ⊕nH (M/Sn,C). Motivated by orbifold conformal field theory, they directly wrote ⊕nH (M/Sn,C) as a ”Fock space” or a representation of Heisenberg algebra. Then, the generating function of Euler characteristic is interpreted as the correlation function of an elliptic curve. Therefore, it should be invariant under modular transformations of the elliptic curve. Orbifold string theory conjecture predicates that ⊕nH ∗(M [n],C) should also admit a representation of Heisenberg algebra. This conjecture was verified by a beautiful work of Nakajima [N] and others. One of theme of this short note is that the orbifold M/Sn will continue to play a crucial role to compute ring structure of H∗(M [n],C). During last two years, there was a surge of activities to study mathematics of the orbifold string theory, which author called the stringy orbifolds. A few curious physical concepts such as the orbifold Euler-Hodge numbers of global quotients found their places in a much broader and deeper theory. For example, a new cohomology (orbifold cohomology) was constructed [CR1]. The growth was so explosive that the author believes that there is an emerging new subject of mathematics. He learned in graduate school that the test of the relevance of a new theory has been the progress it made from old problems. Therefore, it is particularly significant to revisit the problem of computing the ring structure of M [n] and a crepant resolution in general. In [R2], the author proposed a conjecture in the case of a hyperkahler resolution.

Abstract:We observe a general structure theorem for quantum cohomology rings, a non-homogeneous version of the usual cohomology ring encoding information about (almost holomorphic) rational curves. An application is the rigorous computation of the quantum cohomology of Grassmannians. As purely algebraic consequence we prove a beautiful formula of Vafa and Intriligator for intersection numbers of certain compactifications of moduli spaces of maps from a Riemann surface (any genus) to G(k,n) which recently has excited many mathematicians. The formula generalizes to any Fano manifold whose cohomology ring can be presented as complete intersection.

Abstract:We initiate a systematic study on the cohomology rings of the moduli stack $\mathfrak{M}_{d,\chi}$ of semistable one-dimensional sheaves on the projective plane. We introduce a set of tautological relations of geometric origin, including Mumford-type relations, and prove that their ideal is generated by certain primitive relations via the Virasoro operators. Using BPS integrality and the computational efficiency of Virasoro operators, we show that our geometric relations completely determine the cohomology rings of the moduli stacks up to degree 5. As an application, we verify the refined Gopakumar--Vafa/Pandharipande--Thomas correspondence for local $\mathbb{P}^2$ in degree 5. Furthermore, we propose a substantially strengthened version of the $P=C$ conjecture, originally introduced by Shen and two of the authors. This can be viewed as an analogue of the $P=W$ conjecture in a compact and Fano setting.

Abstract:In this paper we consider a class of connected closed G-manifolds with anon-empty finite fixed point set, each M of which is totally non-homologousto zero in M_G (or G-equivariantly formal), where G= Z_2. With thehelp of the equivariant index, we give an explicit description of theequivariant cohomology of such a G-manifold in terms of algebra, so that wecan obtain analytic descriptions of ring isomorphisms among equivariantcohomology rings of such G-manifolds, and a necessary and sufficientcondition that the equivariant cohomology rings of such two G-manifolds areisomorphic. This also leads us to analyze how many there are equivariantcohomology rings up to isomorphism for such G-manifolds in 2- and3-dimensional cases.

Abstract:The (small) quantum cohomology ring of a flag manifold F encodes enumerative geometry of rational curves on F. We give a proof of the presentation of the ring and of a quantum Giambelli formula, which is more direct and geometric than the previously known proof. Furthermore, this proof gives a relationship between quantum Schubert polynomials and universal Schubert polynomials, which arise in a degeneracy locus formula of Fulton.

Abstract:It is known that every closed oriented 3-manifold is homology cobordant to a hyperbolic 3-manifold. By contrast we show that many homology cobordism classes contain no Seifert fibered 3-manifold. This is accomplished by determining the isomorphism type of the rational cohomology ring of all Seifert fibered 3-manifolds with no 2-torsion in their first homology. Then we exhibit families of examples of 3-manifolds (obtained by surgery on links), with fixed linking form and cohomology ring, that are not homology cobordant to any Seifert fibered space (as shown by their rational cohomology ring). These examples are shown to represent distinct homology cobordism classes using higher Massey products and Milnor's u-invariants for links.

Abstract:For certain manifolds with an involution the mod 2 cohomology ring of the set of fixed points is isomorphic to the cohomology ring of the manifold, up to dividing the degrees by two. Examples include complex projective spaces and Grassmannians with the standard antiholomorphic involution (with real projective spaces and Grassmannians as fixed point sets). Hausmann, Holm and Puppe have put this observation in the framework of equivariant cohomology, and come up with the concept of "conjugation spaces", where the ring homomorphisms arise naturally from the existence of what they call "cohomology frames". Much earlier, Borel and Haefliger had studied the degree-halving isomorphism between the cohomology rings of complex and real projective spaces and Grassmannians using the theory of complex and real analytic cycles and cycle maps into cohomology. The main result in the present note gives a (purely topological) connection between these two results and provides a geometric intuition between the concept of a cohomology frame. In particular, we see that if every cohomology class on a manifold X with involution is the Thom class of an equivariant topological cycle of codimension twice the codimension of its fixed points (inside the fixed point set of X), these topological cycles will give rise to a cohomology frame.

Abstract:We give a description of the mod 2 cohomology algebra of the oriented Grassmann manifold $\widetilde G_{2^t,4}$ as the quotient of a polynomial algebra by a certain ideal. In the process we find a Gröbner basis for that ideal, which we then use to exhibit an additive basis for $H^*(\widetilde G_{2^t,4};\mathbb Z_2)$.

On cohomological invariants of complex and almost complex manifolds

Abstract:Given a compact complex manifold, we develop Hodge theory for the elliptic complex of differential forms defined by Bigolin in 1969 and recently referred as the Schweitzer complex. We exhibits several $L^2$ orthogonal decompositions of spaces of forms and prove a Hodge decomposition for harmonic forms on compact Kähler manifolds. Then we compute the cohomology of this complex on the small deformations of the complex structure of the Iwasawa manifold, showing that this cohomology is as powerful as Aeppli and Bott-Chern cohomology, in order to distinguish classes of complex structures. Finally, we partially extend the definition of this complex on almost complex manifolds, providing a new cohomological invariant on 1-forms which is finite dimensional when the manifold is compact.

Denote by $P(m,\nu)=P(\mathbb S^m,\mathbb CG(\nu))$ the generalized Dold manifold $\mathbb S^m\times \mathbb CG(\nu)/\langle \theta\rangle $ where $\theta=\alpha\times \sigma$ with $\alpha:\mathbb S^m\to \mathbb S^m$ being the antipodal map and $\sigma:\mathbb CG(\nu)\to \mathbb CG(\nu)$, the complex conjugation. The manifold $P(m,\nu)$ has the structure of a smooth $\mathbb CG(\nu)$-bundle over the real projective space $\mathbb RP^m.$ We determine the additive structure of $H^*(P(m,\nu);R)$ when $R=\mathbb Z$ and its ring structure when $R$ is a commutative ring in which $2$ is invertible. As an application, we determine the additive structure of $K(P(m,\nu))$ almost completely and also obtain partial results on its ring structure. The results for the singular homology are obtained for generalized Dold spaces $P(S,X)=S\times X/\langle \theta\rangle$, where $\theta=\alpha\times \sigma$, $\alpha:S\to S$ is a fixed point free involution and $\sigma:X\to X$ is an involution with $\mathrm{Fix}(\sigma)\ne \emptyset,$ for a much wider class of spaces $S$ and $X$.

Abstract:A hypercomplex structure $(I,J,K)$ on a manifold $M$ is said to be $C^\infty$-pure-and-full if the Dolbeault cohomology $H^{2,0}_{\partial}(M,I)$ is the direct sum of two natural subgroups called the $\bar{J}$-invariant and the $\bar{J}$-anti-invariant subgroups. We prove that a compact hypercomplex manifold that satisfies the quaternionic version of the $dd^c$-Lemma is $C^\infty$-pure-and-full. Moreover, we study the dimensions of the $\bar{J}$-invariant and the $\bar{J}$-anti-invariant subgroups, together with their analogue in the Bott-Chern cohomology. For instance, in real dimension 8, we characterize the existence of hyperkähler with torsion metrics in terms of the dimension of the $\bar{J}$-invariant subgroup. We also study the existence of special hypercomplex structures on almost abelian solvmanifolds.

Abstract:In the present paper, dedicated to Yuri Manin, we investigate the general notion of rings of $\mathbb S[\mu_{n,+}]$-polynomials and relate this concept to the known notion of number systems. The Riemann-Roch theorem for the ring $\mathbb Z$ of the integers that we obtained recently uses the understanding of $\mathbb Z$ as a ring of polynomials $\mathbb S[X]$ in one variable over the absolute base $\mathbb S$, where $1+1=X+X^2$. The absolute base $\mathbb S$ (the categorical version of the sphere spectrum) thus turns out to be a strong candidate for the incarnation of the mysterious $\mathbb F_1$.

Abstract:For a smooth, closed $n$-manifold $M$, we define an upper semi-continuous integer-valued complexity function on $H^1(M;{\mathbb R})$ using Morse theory. This measures how far an integral class is from being a fiber of a fibration. The fact complexity minimisers are open generalises Tischler's result on the openness of classes dual to fibrations. We then use this to define a complexity function on 1-dimensional cohomology of a finitely presented group, which is constant on open rays from the origin and vanishes precisely on the geometric invariant due to Bieri, Neumann and Strebel.

Abstract:We introduce new finite-dimensional cohomologies on symplectic manifolds. Each exhibits Lefschetz decomposition and contains a unique harmonic representative within each class. Associated with each cohomology is a primitive cohomology defined purely on the space of primitive forms. We identify the dual currents of lagrangians and more generally coisotropic submanifolds with elements of a primitive cohomology, which dualizes to a homology on coisotropic chains.
