Abstract:In Euclidean plane geometry, Apollonius’ problem is to construct a circle in a plane that is tangent to three given circles. We will use a solution to this ancient problem to solve several versions of the following geometric optimization problem. Given is a set of customers located in the plane, each having a demand for a product and a budget. A customer is satisfied if her total, travel and purchase, costs do not exceed the budget. The task is to determine location of production facilities in the plane and one price for the product such that the revenue generated from the satisfied customers is maximized.

Abstract:We construct families of circles in the plane such that their tangency graphs have arbitrarily large girth and chromatic number. This provides a strong negative answer to Ringel's circle problem (1959). The proof relies on a (multidimensional) version of Gallai's theorem with polynomial constraints, which we derive from the Hales-Jewett theorem and which may be of independent interest.

Apollonius Problem and Caustics of an Ellipsoid

Abstract:In the paper we discuss Apollonius Problem on the number of normals of an ellipse passing through a given point. It is known that the number is dependent on the position of the given point with respect to a certain astroida. The intersection points of the astroida and the ellipse are used to study the case when the given point is on the ellipse. The problem is then generalized for 3-dimensional space, namely for Ellipsoids. The number of concurrent normals in this case is known to be dependent on the position of the given point with respect to caustics of the ellipsoid. If the given point is on the ellipsoid then the number of normals is dependent on position of the point with respect to the intersections of the ellipsoid with its caustics. The main motivation of this paper is to find parametrizations and classify all possible cases of these intersections.

A Triad of Circles Associated with a Triangle

Abstract:We study some properties of a triad of circles associated with a triangle. Each circle is inside the triangle, tangent to two sides of the triangle, and externally tangent to the circle on the third side as diameter. In particular, we find a nice relation involving the radii of the inner and outer Apollonius circles of the three circles in the triad.

The generalization arises from considering the Miquel points of two inscribed triangles having a common circumcircle. We also present various properties of the Brocard triangles, which lead to a generalization of the Steiner and Tarry points.

Abstract:The classical Grace–Walsh–Szegő Coincidence Theorem, see Rahman and Schmeisser (Analytic theory of polynomials, Oxford University Press, 2002, p. 108), relates the solutions of a symmetric multi-affine polynomial , with complex coefficients, to the zeros of the univariate polynomial . It says that every circular domain containing all points in a solution of P contains at least one zero of p . That result, together with its equivalent Grace's theorem, see Grace (Proc. Cambr. Philos. 11:352–357, 1902) or Rahman and Schmeisser (2002, p. 107), are among the most important fundamental results in the geometric theory of polynomials. The goal of this work is to search for structures in the algebraic variety given by the solutions of a multi-affine polynomial, symmetric or not. Since multi-affine polynomials are closely related to Möbius transformations, it is natural to look for patterns made up of circles. Given a solution of , we define the notion of weakly invariant circles given that solution . We give necessary and sufficient conditions for weakly invariant circles to exist, given the solution , and describe how to find them. In the second half of the paper we specialize our findings to symmetric multi-affine polynomials. Surprisingly, under very mild conditions, if has weakly invariant circles given the solution , then the points lie necessarily on a circle.

Abstract:The Apollonius theorem gives the length of a median of a triangle in terms of the lengths of its sides. The straightforward generalization of this theorem obtained for m-simplices in the n-dimensional Euclidean space for n greater than or equal to m is given. Based on this, generalizations of properties related to the medians of a triangle are presented. In addition, applications of the generalized Apollonius' theorem and the related to the medians results, are given for obtaining: (a) the minimal spherical surface that encloses a given simplex or a given bounded set, (b) the thickness of a simplex that it provides a measure for the quality or how well shaped a simplex is, and (c) the convergence and error estimates of the root-finding bisection method applied on simplices.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel method to draw a circle tangent to three given circles lying on a plane. Using the analytic geometry and inversion (reflection) theorems, the center and radius of the inversion circle are obtained. Inside any one of the three given circles, a circle of the similar radius and concentric with its own corresponding original circle is <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://drawn.The" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> tangent circle to these three similar circles is obtained. Then the inverted circles of the three similar circles and the tangent circle regarding an obtainable point and a computable power of inversion (reflection) constant are obtained. These circles (three inverted circles and an inverted tangent circle)will be tangent <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://together.Just" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>,we obtain another reflection point and power of inversion so that those three reflected circles (inversions of three similar circles) can be reflections of three original circles, respectively. In such a case,the reflected circle tangent to three reflected circles regarding same new inversion system will be tangent to the three original ones. This circle is our desirable circle. A drawing algorithm is also given for drawing desirable circle by straightedge and compass. A survey of conformal mapping theory and inversion in higher dimensions is also accomplished. Although, Laguerre transformation might be used for solution of this problem, but we do not make use of this method. Our novelty is just for drawing a circle tangent to three given circles applying a tangent circle to three identical circles concentric with three given ones and then inverting them as original ones by compass and straightedge not any thing else.

Abstract:A long-standing open conjecture of Branko Grünbaum from 1972 states that any simple arrangement of $n$ pairwise intersecting pseudocircles in the plane can have at most $2n-2$ digons. Agarwal et al. proved this conjecture for arrangements of pairwise intersecting pseudocircles in which there is a common point surrounded by all pseudocircles. Recently, Felsner, Roch and Scheucher showed that Grünbaum's conjecture is true for arrangements of pairwise intersecting pseudocircles in which there are three pseudocircles every pair of which create a digon. In this paper we prove this over 50-year-old conjecture of Grünbaum for any simple arrangement of pairwise intersecting circles in the plane.

Initial three candidate points are selected with the one-point operator and two-point operator. The two-point operator is also used to select candidate points or determine redundant data points during iterations. Abstract:Inspired by a theorem by Skornjakov–Hughes–Pasini [8], [5], [6] and a problem which turned up in our recent paper [11], we start a study of epimorphisms with source a thick generalized m-gon and target a thin generalized m-gon. In this first part of the series, we classify the cases m=3,4 and 6 when the polygons are finite. Then we show that the infinite case is very different, and construct examples which strongly deviate from the finite case. A number of general structure theorems are also obtained. We introduce the theory of locally finitely generated generalized polygons and locally finitely chained generalized polygons along the way.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to introduce and investigate several new identities related to a unification and generalization of the three families of generalized Apostol type polynomials such as the Apostol–Bernoulli polynomials, the Apostol–Euler polynomials and the Apostol–Genocchi polynomials. The results presented here are based upon the theory of the Umbral Calculus and the Umbral Algebra. We also introduce some operators. By using a unified generating function for these Apostol type polynomials, which was constructed recently by Özden et al. (2010) [42], we derive many new properties of these polynomials. Moreover, we give relations between these polynomials and the Stirling numbers of the first and second kind.

Abstract:Two subsets A , B of the plane are betweenness isomorphic if there is a bijection f : A → B such that, for every x , y , z ∈ A , the point f ( z ) lies on the line segment connecting f ( x ) and f ( y ) if and only if z lies on the line segment connecting x and y . In general, it is quite difficult to tell whether two given subsets of the plane are betweenness isomorphic. We concentrate on the case when each of the sets A , B is of the form C ∪ D where C is a circle and D is a finite set. We fully characterize the betweenness isomorphism classes in the family of all circles with three collinear points inside. In particular, we show that there are only countably many isomorphism classes, for which we provide an algebraic description.

Abstract:Motivated by Akbulut-Larson's construction of Brieskorn spheres bounding rational homology 4-balls, we explore plumbed 3-manifolds that bound rational homology circles and use them to construct infinite families of rational homology 3-spheres that bound rational homology 4-balls. Some of these rational homology 3-spheres are new examples of integer homology 3-spheres that bound rational homology 4-balls, but do not bound integer homology 4-balls (i.e. nontrivial elements of <math>ker(ΘZ3→ΘQ3)</math>). In particular, we find infinite families of torus bundles over the circle that bound rational homology circles, provide a simple method for constructing more general plumbed 3-manifolds that bound rational homology circles, and show that, for example, −1-surgery along any unknotting number one knot K with a positive crossing that can be switched to unknot K bounds a rational homology 4-ball.
