Abstract:The Cramer-Castillon problem (CCP) consists in finding one or more polygons inscribed in a circle such that their sides pass cyclically through a list of $N$ points. We study this problem where the points are the vertices of a triangle and the circle is either the incircle or excircles.

Abstract:We study some properties of a triad of circles associated with a triangle. Each circle is inside the triangle, tangent to two sides of the triangle, and externally tangent to the circle on the third side as diameter. In particular, we find a nice relation involving the radii of the inner and outer Apollonius circles of the three circles in the triad.

Abstract:Dupin cyclides are classical algebraic surfaces of low degree. Recently, they have gained popularity in computer-aided geometric design (CAGD) and architecture owing to the fact that they contain many circles. We derive algebraic conditions that fully characterize the Dupin cyclides passing through a fixed circle. The results are applied to the basic problem in CAGD of the blending of Dupin cyclides along circles.

Abstract:Let $J$ be a simple closed curve in $\mathbb R^{k}$ $(k\geq2)$ that is differentiable with non-zero derivative at a point $A_0\in J$. For a tuple of positive reals $a_1,\cdots,a_n$ $(n\geq3)$, each of which is less than the sum of the others, we show that there exists a polygon $Q_n$ inscribed in $J$ with sides of lengths proportional to $(a_1,\cdots,a_n)$. As a consequence, we prove the existence of triangle inscribed in $J$ similar to any given triangle.

Abstract:An n-simplex is called circumscriptible (or edge-incentric) if there is a sphere which is tangent to all its n(n + 1)/2 edges. We obtain a closed formula for the radius of the circumscribed sphere of a circumscriptible n-simplex, and we prove a double inequality involving the circumradius and the edge-inradius of such simplices. With these results a part of a problem posed by the authors is solved.

Abstract:Cycloids, hypocycloids and epicycloids have an often forgotten common property: they are homothetic to their evolutes. But what if we use convex symmetric polygons as unit balls, can we define evolutes and cycloids which are genuinely discrete? Indeed, we can! We define discrete cycloids as eigenvectors of a discrete double evolute transform which can be seen as a linear operator on a vector space we call curvature radius space. We are also able to classify such cycloids according to the eigenvalues of that transform, and show that the number of cusps of each cycloid is well determined by the ordering of those eigenvalues. As an elegant application, we easily establish a version of the four-vertex theorem for closed convex polygons. The whole theory is developed using only linear algebra, and concrete examples are given.

Abstract:Integer geometry on a plane deals with objects whose vertices are points in $\mathbb Z^2$. The congruence relation is provided by all affine transformations preserving the lattice $\mathbb Z^2$. In this paper we study circumscribed circles in integer geometry. We introduce the notions of integer and rational circumscribed circles of integer sets. We determine the conditions for a finite integer set to admit an integer circumscribed circle and describe the spectra of radii for integer and rational circumscribed circles.

Abstract:We study convex cyclic polygons, that is, inscribed n-gons. Starting from P. Schreiber’s idea, published in 1993, we prove that these polygons are not constructible from their side lengths with straightedge and compass, provided n is at least five. They are non-constructible even in the particular case where they only have two different integer side lengths, provided that n ≠ 6. To achieve this goal, we develop two tools of separate interest. First, we prove a limit theorem stating that, under reasonable conditions, geometric constructibility is preserved under taking limits. To do so, we tailor a particular case of Puiseux’s classical theorem on some generalized power series, called Puiseux series, over algebraically closed fields to an analogous theorem on these series over real square root closed fields. Second, based on Hilbert’s irreducibility theorem, we give a rational parameter theorem that, under reasonable conditions again, turns a non-constructibility result with a transcendental parameter into a non-constructibility result with a rational parameter. For n even and at least six, we give an elementary proof for the non-constructibility of the cyclic n-gon from its side lengths and, also, from the distances of its sides from the center of the circumscribed circle. The fact that the cyclic n-gon is constructible from these distances for n = 4 but non-constructible for n = 3 exemplifies that some conditions of the limit theorem cannot be omitted.

Abstract:Heron's formula states that the area $K$ of a triangle with sides $a$, $b$, and $c$ is given by $$ K=\sqrt {s(s-a) (s-b) (s-c)} $$ where $s$ is the semiperimeter $(a+b+c)/2$. Brahmagupta, Robbins, Roskies, and Maley generalized this formula for polygons of up to eight sides inscribed in a circle. In this paper we derive formulas giving the areas of any $n$-gon, with odd $n$, in terms of the ordered list of side lengths, if the $n$-gon is circumscribed about a circle (instead of being inscribed in a circle). Unlike the cyclic polygon problem, where the order of the sides does not matter, for the inscribed circle problem (our case) it does matter. The solution is much easier than for the cyclic polygon problem, but it does generalize easily to all odd $n$. We also provide necessary and sufficient conditions for there to be solutions in the case of even $n$.

Abstract:The classical Grace–Walsh–Szegő Coincidence Theorem, see Rahman and Schmeisser (Analytic theory of polynomials, Oxford University Press, 2002, p. 108), relates the solutions of a symmetric multi-affine polynomial , with complex coefficients, to the zeros of the univariate polynomial . It says that every circular domain containing all points in a solution of P contains at least one zero of p . That result, together with its equivalent Grace's theorem, see Grace (Proc. Cambr. Philos. 11:352–357, 1902) or Rahman and Schmeisser (2002, p. 107), are among the most important fundamental results in the geometric theory of polynomials. The goal of this work is to search for structures in the algebraic variety given by the solutions of a multi-affine polynomial, symmetric or not. Since multi-affine polynomials are closely related to Möbius transformations, it is natural to look for patterns made up of circles. Given a solution of , we define the notion of weakly invariant circles given that solution . We give necessary and sufficient conditions for weakly invariant circles to exist, given the solution , and describe how to find them. In the second half of the paper we specialize our findings to symmetric multi-affine polynomials. Surprisingly, under very mild conditions, if has weakly invariant circles given the solution , then the points lie necessarily on a circle.

Dowker-type theorems for disk-polygons in normed planes

Abstract:A classical result of Dowker (Bull. Amer. Math. Soc. 50: 120-122, 1944) states that for any plane convex body $K$ in the Euclidean plane, the areas of the maximum (resp. minimum) area convex $n$-gons inscribed (resp. circumscribed) in $K$ is a concave (resp. convex) sequence. It is known that this theorem remains true if we replace area by perimeter, the Euclidean plane by an arbitrary normed plane, or convex $n$-gons by disk-$n$-gons, obtained as the intersection of $n$ closed Euclidean unit disks. The aim of our paper is to investigate these problems for $C$-$n$-gons, defined as intersections of $n$ translates of the unit disk $C$ of a normed plane. In particular, we show that Dowker's theorem remains true for the areas and the perimeters of circumscribed $C$-$n$-gons, and the perimeters of inscribed $C$-$n$-gons. We also show that in the family of origin-symmetric plane convex bodies, for a typical element $C$ with respect to Hausdorff distance, Dowker's theorem for the areas of inscribed $C$-$n$-gons fails.

Abstract:We investigate several geometric problems of finding tours and cycle covers with minimum turn cost, which have been studied in the past, with complexity, approximation results, and open problems dating back to work by Arkin et al. in 2001. Many new practical applications have spawned variants: For full coverage , all points have to be covered, for subset coverage , specific points have to be covered, and for penalty coverage , points may be left uncovered by incurring a penalty. We show that finding a minimum-turn (full) cycle cover is NP-hard even in 2-dimensional grid graphs, solving the long-standing open Problem 53 in The Open Problems Project edited by Demaine, Mitchell and O'Rourke. We also prove NP-hardness of finding a subset cycle cover of minimum turn cost in thin grid graphs, for which Arkin et al. gave a polynomial-time algorithm for full coverage; this shows that their boundary techniques cannot be applied to compute exact solutions for subset and penalty variants. We also provide a number of positive results. In particular, we establish the first constant-factor approximation algorithms for all considered subset and penalty problem variants for grid-based instances, based on LP/IP techniques. These geometric versions allow many possible edge directions (and thus, turn angles, such as in hexagonal grids or higher-dimensional variants); our approximation factors improve the combinatorial ones of Arkin et al.

Infinite circle packings on surfaces with conical singularities

Abstract:We show that given an infinite triangulation $K$ of a surface with punctures (i.e., with no vertices at the punctures) and a set of target cone angles $\Theta$ at the punctures that satisfy a Gauss-Bonnet inequality, there exists a hyperbolic metric that has the prescribed angles and supports a circle packing in the combinatorics of $K$. Moreover, if $K$ is very symmetric, then we can identify the underlying Riemann surface and show that it does not depend on the angles. In particular, this provides examples of a triangulation $K$ and a conformal class $X$ such that there are infinitely many conical hyperbolic structures in the conformal class $X$ with a circle packing in the combinatorics of $K$. This is in sharp contrast with a conjecture of Kojima-Mizushima-Tan in the closed case.

Abstract:Any triangle in an isotropic plane has a circumcircle u and incircle i. It turns out that there are infinitely many triangles with the same circumcircle u and incircle i. This one-parameter family of triangles is called a poristic system of triangles. We study the trace of the centroid, the Feuerbach point, the symmedian point, the Gergonne point, the Steiner point and the Brocard points for such a system of triangles. We also study the traces of some further points associated with the triangles of the poristic family, and we prove that the vertices of the contact triangle, tangential triangle and anticomplementary triangle move on circles while the initial triangle traverses the poristic family.

On the cyclicity of hyperbolic polycycles

Abstract:Let $X$ be a planar smooth vector field with a polycycle $\Gamma^n$ with $n$ sides and all its corners, that are at most $n$ singularities, being hyperbolic saddles. In this paper we study the cyclicity of $\Gamma^n$ in terms of the hyperbolicity ratios of these saddles, giving explicit conditions that ensure that it is at least $k,$ for any $k\leqslant n.$ Our result extends old results and also provides a more accurate proof of the known ones because we rely on some recent powerful works that study in more detail the regularity with respect to initial conditions and parameters of the Dulac map of hyperbolic saddles for families of vector fields. We also prove that when $X$ is polynomial there is a polynomial perturbation (in general with degree much higher that the one of $X$) that attains each of the obtained lower bounds for the cyclicities. Finally, we also study some related inverse problems and provide concrete examples of applications in the polynomial world.

Abstract:Abstract We discuss a notion of discrete conformal equivalence for decorated piecewise Euclidean surfaces (PE-surface), that is, PE-surfaces with a choice of circle about each vertex. It is closely related to inversive distance and hyperideal circle patterns. Under the assumption that the circles are non-intersecting, we prove the corresponding discrete uniformization theorem. The uniformization theorem for discrete conformal maps corresponds to the special case that all circles degenerate to points. Our proof relies on an intimate relationship between decorated PE-surfaces, canonical tessellations of hyperbolic surfaces and convex hyperbolic polyhedra. It is based on a concave variational principle, which also provides a method for the computation of decorated discrete conformal maps.
