Abstract:In 2021, Dan Reznik made a YouTube video demonstrating that power circles of Poncelet triangles have an invariant total area. He made a simulation based on this observation and put forward a few conjectures. One of these conjectures suggests that the sum of the areas of three circles, each centered at the midpoint of a side of the Poncelet triangle and passing through the opposite vertex, remains constant. In this paper, we provide a proof of Reznik's conjecture and present a formula for calculating the total sum. Additionally, we demonstrate the algebraic structures formed by various sets of products and the geometric properties of polygons and ellipses created by these products.

Abstract:Given a triangle, a trio of circumellipses can be defined, each centered on an excenter. Over the family of Poncelet 3-periodics (triangles) in a concentric ellipse pair (axis-aligned or not), the trio resembles a rotating propeller, where each "blade" has variable area. Amazingly, their total area is invariant, even when the ellipse pair is not axis-aligned. We also prove a closely-related invariant involving the sum of blade-to-excircle area ratios.

Symmetry Reduction and Rotation Numbers for Poncelet maps

Abstract:Poncelet maps are circle maps constructed geometrically for a pair of nested ellipses; they are related to the classic billiard map on an elliptical domain when the orbit has an elliptical caustic. Here we show how the rotation number of the elliptical billiard map can be obtained from a symmetry generated from the flow of a pendulum Hamiltonian system. When such a symmetry flow has a global cross section, we previously showed that there are coordinates in which the map takes a reduced, skew-product form on a covering space. In particular, for elliptic billiard map this gives an explicit form for the rotation number of each orbit. We show that the family Poncelet maps on a pencil of ellipses is conjugate to a corresponding family of billiard maps, and thus the Poncelet maps inherit the one-parameter family of continuous symmetries. Such a pencil has a single parameter, the pencil eccentricity, which becomes the modulus of the Jacobi elliptic functions used to construct a covering space that simultaneously simplifies all of the Poncelet maps. The rotation number of the Poncelet map for any element of a pencil can then be written in terms of elliptic functions as well. An implication is that the rotation number of the pencil has a monotonicity property: it is monotone increasing as the caustic ellipse shrinks. The resulting expression for the rotation number gives an explicit condition for Poncelet porisms, the parameters for which the rotation number is rational. For such parameters, an orbit of the corresponding Poncelet map is periodic: it forms a polygon for any initial point. These universal parameters also solve the inverse problem: given a rotation number, which member of a pencil has a Poncelet map with that rotation number? Explicit conditions are given for a general rotation numbers and we see how they are related to Cayley's classic porism theorem.

Isoperiodic families of Poncelet polygons inscribed in a circle and circumscribed about conics from a confocal pencil

Abstract:Poncelet polygons inscribed in a circle and circumscribed about conics from a confocal family naturally arise in the analysis of the numerical range and Blaschke products. We examine the behaviour of such polygons when the inscribed conic varies through a confocal pencil and discover cases when each conic from the confocal family is inscribed in an $n$-polygon, which is inscribed in the circle, with the same $n$. Complete geometric characterization of such cases for $n\in\{4,6\}$ is given and proved that this cannot happen for other values of $n$. We establish a relationship of such families of Poncelet quadrangles and hexagons to solutions of a Painlevé VI equation.

Abstract:The dynamic geometry of the family of 3-periodics in the Elliptic Billiard is mystifying. Besides conserving perimeter and the ratio of inradius-to-circumradius, it has a stationary point. Furthermore, its triangle centers sweep out mesmerizing loci including ellipses, quartics, circles, and a slew of other more complex curves. Here we explore a bevy of new phenomena relating to (i) the shape of 3-periodics and (ii) the kinematics of certain Triangle Centers constrained to the Billiard boundary, specifically the non-monotonic motion some can display with respect to 3-periodics. Hypnotizing is the joint motion of two such non-monotonic Centers, whose many stops-and-gos are akin to a Ballet.

Abstract:Any triangle in an isotropic plane has a circumcircle u and incircle i. It turns out that there are infinitely many triangles with the same circumcircle u and incircle i. This one-parameter family of triangles is called a poristic system of triangles. We study the trace of the centroid, the Feuerbach point, the symmedian point, the Gergonne point, the Steiner point and the Brocard points for such a system of triangles. We also study the traces of some further points associated with the triangles of the poristic family, and we prove that the vertices of the contact triangle, tangential triangle and anticomplementary triangle move on circles while the initial triangle traverses the poristic family.

Toric Elliptic Pairs with Picard Number Three

Abstract:An elliptic pair $(X, C)$ is a generalization of a rational elliptic fibration $X \to \mathbb{P}^1$ with fiber $C,$ introduced in \cite{jenia_blowup}. Here, $X$ is a projective rational surface with log terminal singularities, and $C$ is an irreducible curve contained in the smooth locus of $X,$ with $p_a(C)=1$ and $C^2=0.$ These naturally arise as blowups $X:=\text{Bl}_e(\mathbb{P}_\Delta)$ of projective toric surfaces, whose Newton polygon is elliptic. The order of $\mathcal{O}(C)|_C$ in $\text{Pic}^0(C)$ gives a quantitative way to check if $X$ is an elliptic fibration, which is equivalent to finiteness of the order. We call $\Delta$ a Lang-Trotter polygon when this order is infinite, in which case $\overline{\text{Eff}(\text{Bl}_e(\mathbb{P}_\Delta))}$ is non-polyhedral. The paper \cite{lizzie} shows there are exactly $3$ elliptic triangles up to $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z}),$ none of which is Lang-Trotter. The paper \cite{jenia_blowup} gives an infinite family of Lang-Trotter pentagons and heptagons, and various examples of other polygons when $\rho(\mathbb{P}_\Delta)>2.$ Remark 4.7 in the paper asks if any Lang-Trotter quadrilaterals exist, and we answer this in the negative by studying the curves in the Zariski Decomposition of $K_X+C.$

Abstract:We study some properties of a triad of circles associated with a triangle. Each circle is inside the triangle, tangent to two sides of the triangle, and externally tangent to the circle on the third side as diameter. In particular, we find a nice relation involving the radii of the inner and outer Apollonius circles of the three circles in the triad.

Abstract:In this paper I will establish a special case of a conjecture that intertwines the deep diagonal pentagram maps and Poncelet polygons. The special case is that of the 3-diagonal map acting on affine equivalence classes of centrally symmetric octagons. This is the simplest case that goes beyond an analysis of elliptic curves. The proof involves establishing that the map is Arnold-Liouville integrable in this case, and then exploring the Lagrangian surface foliation in detail.

Abstract:We study the geometric structure of Poncelet $n$-gons from a projective point of view. In particular we present explicit constructions of Poncelet $n$-gons for certain $n$ and derive algebraic characterisations in terms of bracket polynomials. Via the connections of Poncelet polygons and $(N_4)$-configurations, the results of this article can be used to construct a large class of specific movable $(N_4)$-configurations, the trivial celestial 4-configurations, which up to this point were all thought to be rigid and to require regular polygons for their construction.

Is every triangle a trajectory of an elliptical billiard?

Abstract:Using Marden's Theorem from geometric theory of polynomials, we show that for every triangle there is a unique ellipse such that the triangle is a billiard trajectory within that ellipse. Since $3$-periodic trajectories of billiards within ellipses are examples of the Poncelet polygons, our considerations provide a new insight into the relationship between Marden's Theorem and the Poncelet Porism, two gems of exceptional classical beauty. We also show that every parallelogram is a billiard trajectory within a unique ellipse. We prove a similar result for the self-intersecting polygonal lines consisting of two pairs of congruent sides, named "Darboux butterflies". In each of three considered cases, we effectively calculate the foci of the boundary ellipses.

Abstract:A 2006 conjecture of Antunes and Freitas is addressed connecting the scaling-invariant polygonal isoperimetric and principal frequency deficits for triangles. This yields a quantitative polygonal Faber–Krahn inequality for triangles with an explicit constant. Furthermore, a problem mentioned in the 1951 book “Isoperimetric Inequalities In Mathematical Physics” by Pólya and Szegö is addressed: a formula is given for the principal frequency of a triangle. Moreover, a space of polygons is constructed for the classical Pólya and Szegö problem: in 1947, Pólya proved that if n = 3, 4 the regular polygon Pn minimizes the principal frequency of an n-gon with given area α > 0 and suggested that the same holds when n ≥ 5. In 1951, Pólya and Szegö discussed the possibility of counterexamples. This paper constructs explicit (2n − 4)–dimensional polygonal manifolds M(n,α) and proves the existence of a computable N ≥ 5 such that for all n ≥ N, the admissible n-gons are given via M(n,α)and there exists an explicit set An(α)⊂M(n,α) such that Pn has the smallest principal frequency among n-gons in An(α). Inter-alia when n ≥ 3, a formula is proved for the principal frequency of a convex P∈M(n,α)in terms of an equilateral n-gon with the same area; and, the set of equilateral polygons is proved to be an (n − 3)–dimensional submanifold of the (2n − 4)–dimensional manifold M(n,α)near Pn. The techniques involve a partial symmetrization, tensor calculus, the spectral theory of circulant matrices, and W2,p/BMO estimates. Last, an application is given in the context of electron bubbles.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we study the hyperbolic and parabolic strip deformations of ideal (possibly once‐punctured) hyperbolic polygons whose vertices are decorated with horoballs. We prove that the interiors of their arc complexes parametrise the open convex set of all uniformly lengthening infinitesimal deformations of the decorated hyperbolic metrics on these surfaces, motivated by the work of Danciger–Guéritaud–Kassel. We also give a version of this result for the undecorated ideal polygons and once‐punctured ideal polygons.

Abstract:Abstract We construct a sequence of explicit blow-ups and blow-downs on an irreducible compact Hermitian symmetric spaces $X$ which transforms it into a projective space of the same dimension. Moreover, this resolves a birational map given by Landsberg and Manivel. Centers of the blow-ups for $X$ are constructed by loci of chains of minimal rational curves and centers of the blow-ups for the projective space are constructed from the variety of minimal rational tangents of $X$ and its higher secant varieties. The result was known in the special case where $X$ is of rank 2 and could be found in Zak’s monograph “Tangents and secants of algebraic varieties.”

Abstract:Suppose a relatively elliptic representation $\rho$ of the fundamental group of the thrice-punctured sphere $S$ is given. We prove that all projective structures on $S$ with holonomy $\rho$ and satisfying a tameness condition at the punctures can be obtained by grafting certain circular triangles. The specific collection of triangles is determined by a natural framing of $\rho$. In the process, we show that (on a general surface $\Sigma$ of negative Euler characteristics) structures satisfying these conditions can be characterized in terms of their Möbius completion, and in terms of certain meromorphic quadratic differentials.

Abstract:We prove that, among the polygons in a punctured disc with fixed angles, the perimeter is minimized by the polygon with an inscribed horocycle centered at the puncture. We generalize this to a disc with a cone point and to an annulus with a geodesic boundary component and a complete end. Then we apply this result to describe the minimum of the spine systole on the moduli space of punctured surfaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate some polynomial conditions that arise from Euclidean geometry. First we study polynomials related to quadrilaterals with supplementary angles, this includes convex cyclic quadrilaterals, as well as certain concave quadrilaterals. Then we consider polynomials associated with quadrilaterals with some equal angles, which include convex and concave tilted kites. Some of the results are proved using Groebner bases computations.
