Abstract:We describe all triangles that shares the same circumcircle and Euler circle. Although this two circles do not form a poristic pair of circles, we find a poristic circle "in-between" that enable to solve this problem using Poncelet porism.

Abstract:Any triangle in an isotropic plane has a circumcircle u and incircle i. It turns out that there are infinitely many triangles with the same circumcircle u and incircle i. This one-parameter family of triangles is called a poristic system of triangles. We study the trace of the centroid, the Feuerbach point, the symmedian point, the Gergonne point, the Steiner point and the Brocard points for such a system of triangles. We also study the traces of some further points associated with the triangles of the poristic family, and we prove that the vertices of the contact triangle, tangential triangle and anticomplementary triangle move on circles while the initial triangle traverses the poristic family.

Isoperiodic families of Poncelet polygons inscribed in a circle and circumscribed about conics from a confocal pencil

Abstract:Poncelet polygons inscribed in a circle and circumscribed about conics from a confocal family naturally arise in the analysis of the numerical range and Blaschke products. We examine the behaviour of such polygons when the inscribed conic varies through a confocal pencil and discover cases when each conic from the confocal family is inscribed in an $n$-polygon, which is inscribed in the circle, with the same $n$. Complete geometric characterization of such cases for $n\in\{4,6\}$ is given and proved that this cannot happen for other values of $n$. We establish a relationship of such families of Poncelet quadrangles and hexagons to solutions of a Painlevé VI equation.

Abstract:We tour several harmonious Euclidean properties of Poncelet triangles inscribed in an ellipse and circumscribing the incircle. We also show that a number of degenerate behaviors are triggered by the presence of an equilateral triangle in the family.

Abstract:Poncelet maps are circle maps constructed geometrically for a pair of nested ellipses; they are related to the classic billiard map on an elliptical domain when the orbit has an elliptical caustic. Here we show how the rotation number of the elliptical billiard map can be obtained from a symmetry generated from the flow of a pendulum Hamiltonian system. When such a symmetry flow has a global cross section, we previously showed that there are coordinates in which the map takes a reduced, skew-product form on a covering space. In particular, for elliptic billiard map this gives an explicit form for the rotation number of each orbit. We show that the family Poncelet maps on a pencil of ellipses is conjugate to a corresponding family of billiard maps, and thus the Poncelet maps inherit the one-parameter family of continuous symmetries. Such a pencil has a single parameter, the pencil eccentricity, which becomes the modulus of the Jacobi elliptic functions used to construct a covering space that simultaneously simplifies all of the Poncelet maps. The rotation number of the Poncelet map for any element of a pencil can then be written in terms of elliptic functions as well. An implication is that the rotation number of the pencil has a monotonicity property: it is monotone increasing as the caustic ellipse shrinks. The resulting expression for the rotation number gives an explicit condition for Poncelet porisms, the parameters for which the rotation number is rational. For such parameters, an orbit of the corresponding Poncelet map is periodic: it forms a polygon for any initial point. These universal parameters also solve the inverse problem: given a rotation number, which member of a pencil has a Poncelet map with that rotation number? Explicit conditions are given for a general rotation numbers and we see how they are related to Cayley's classic porism theorem.

A Triad of Circles Associated with a Triangle

Abstract:We study some properties of a triad of circles associated with a triangle. Each circle is inside the triangle, tangent to two sides of the triangle, and externally tangent to the circle on the third side as diameter. In particular, we find a nice relation involving the radii of the inner and outer Apollonius circles of the three circles in the triad.

Abstract:In 2021, Dan Reznik made a YouTube video demonstrating that power circles of Poncelet triangles have an invariant total area. He made a simulation based on this observation and put forward a few conjectures. One of these conjectures suggests that the sum of the areas of three circles, each centered at the midpoint of a side of the Poncelet triangle and passing through the opposite vertex, remains constant. In this paper, we provide a proof of Reznik's conjecture and present a formula for calculating the total sum. Additionally, we demonstrate the algebraic structures formed by various sets of products and the geometric properties of polygons and ellipses created by these products.

Abstract:Given a triangle, a trio of circumellipses can be defined, each centered on an excenter. Over the family of Poncelet 3-periodics (triangles) in a concentric ellipse pair (axis-aligned or not), the trio resembles a rotating propeller, where each "blade" has variable area. Amazingly, their total area is invariant, even when the ellipse pair is not axis-aligned. We also prove a closely-related invariant involving the sum of blade-to-excircle area ratios.

Abstract:A Steiner chain of length k consists of k circles, tangent to two given non-intersecting circles (the parent circles) and tangent to each other in a cyclic pattern. The Steiner porism states that once a chain of k circles exists, there exists a 1-parameter family of such chains with the same parent circles that can be constructed starting with any initial circle, tangent to the parent circles. What do the circles in these 1-parameter family of Steiner chains of length k have in common? We prove that the first k-1 moments of their curvatures remain constant within a 1-parameter family. For k=3, this follows from the Descartes Circle Theorem. We extend our result to Steiner chains in the spherical and hyperbolic geometries and present a related more general theorem involving spherical designs.

Abstract:A cyclic antipodal pair of a circle is a pair of points that are the intersection of the circle with the diameter of the circle. In this article, a recent proof of Ptolemy's Theorem—simultaneously in both (i) Euclidean geometry and (ii) the relativistic model of hyperbolic geometry (also known as the Klein model)—motivates the study of four cyclic antipodal pairs of a circle, ordered arbitrarily counterclockwise. The translation of results from Euclidean geometry into hyperbolic geometry is obtained by means of hyperbolic trigonometry, called gyrotrigonometry, to which Einstein addition gives rise. Identities that extend the Pythagorean identity in both Euclidean and hyperbolic geometry are obtained.

Abstract:On the identity component of the universal Teichmüller space endowed with the Takhtajan–Teo topology, the geodesics of the Weil–Petersson metric are shown to exist for all time. This component is naturally a subgroup of the quasisymmetric homeomorphisms of the circle. Viewed this way, the regularity of its elements is shown to be H32−ε for all ε>0. The evolutionary PDE associated to the spatial representation of the geodesics of the Weil–Petersson metric is derived using multiplication and composition below the critical Sobolev index 3/2. Geodesic completeness is used to introduce special classes of solutions of this PDE analogous to peakons. Our setting is used to prove that there exists a unique geodesic between each two shapes in the plane in the context of the application of the Weil–Petersson metric in imaging.

Abstract:It is shown that Euler's theorem for graphs can be generalized for 2-complexes. Two notions that generalize cycle and Eulerian tour are introduced (``circlet'' and ``Eulerian cover''), and we show that for a strongly-connected, pure 2-complex, the following are equivalent: (i) each edge meets a positive even number of 2-cells (faces), (ii) the complex can be decomposed as the face-disjoint union of circlets, and (iii) the complex has an Eulerian cover. A number of examples are provided.

Abstract:Let $ E \xrightarrow[\text{}]{\pi} B$ be an oriented circle bundle over an oriented closed surface $B$. A \textit{quasisection} is a closed smooth manifold ${Q}$ mapped by a generic smooth mapping $q$ to $E$ such that $\pi\circ q({Q})=B$. In the paper we show that Euler number (Euler class) of the bundle equals the sum of weights of (some of) singularities of a quasisection. We also prove the uniqueness of such a formula. The formula is a close relative of M. Kazarian's formula which relates the Euler number and Morse bifurcations of a generic function defined on the total space $E$.

Toric Elliptic Pairs with Picard Number Three

Abstract:An elliptic pair $(X, C)$ is a generalization of a rational elliptic fibration $X \to \mathbb{P}^1$ with fiber $C,$ introduced in \cite{jenia_blowup}. Here, $X$ is a projective rational surface with log terminal singularities, and $C$ is an irreducible curve contained in the smooth locus of $X,$ with $p_a(C)=1$ and $C^2=0.$ These naturally arise as blowups $X:=\text{Bl}_e(\mathbb{P}_\Delta)$ of projective toric surfaces, whose Newton polygon is elliptic. The order of $\mathcal{O}(C)|_C$ in $\text{Pic}^0(C)$ gives a quantitative way to check if $X$ is an elliptic fibration, which is equivalent to finiteness of the order. We call $\Delta$ a Lang-Trotter polygon when this order is infinite, in which case $\overline{\text{Eff}(\text{Bl}_e(\mathbb{P}_\Delta))}$ is non-polyhedral. The paper \cite{lizzie} shows there are exactly $3$ elliptic triangles up to $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z}),$ none of which is Lang-Trotter. The paper \cite{jenia_blowup} gives an infinite family of Lang-Trotter pentagons and heptagons, and various examples of other polygons when $\rho(\mathbb{P}_\Delta)>2.$ Remark 4.7 in the paper asks if any Lang-Trotter quadrilaterals exist, and we answer this in the negative by studying the curves in the Zariski Decomposition of $K_X+C.$

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the definitions of Eulerian pair and Hermite-Biehler pair. We also characterize a duality relation between Eulerian recurrences and Eulerian recurrence systems. This generalizes and unifies Hermite-Biehler decompositions of several enumerative polynomials, including up-down run polynomials for symmetric groups, alternating run polynomials for hyperoctahedral groups, flag descent polynomials for hyperoctahedral groups and flag ascent-plateau polynomials for Stirling permutations. We derive some properties of associated polynomials. In particular, we prove the alternatingly increasing property and the interlacing property of the ascent-plateau and left ascent-plateau polynomials for Stirling permutations.
Euler systems for conjugate-symplectic motives

Abstract:Let $\rho$ be a conjugate-symplectic, geometric representation of the Galois group of a CM field. Under the assumption that $\rho$ is automorphic, even-dimensional, and of minimal regular Hodge--Tate type, we construct an Euler system for $\rho$ in the sense of forthcoming work of Jetchev--Nekovar--Skinner. The construction is based on Theta cycles as introduced in a previous paper, following works of Kudla and Liu on arithmetic theta series on unitary Shimura varieties; it relies on a certain modularity hypothesis for those theta series. Under some ordinariness assumptions, one can attach to $\rho$ a p-adic L-function. By recent results of Liu and the author, and the theory of Jetchev--Nekovar--Skinner, we deduce the following (unconditional) result under mild assumptions: if the p-adic L-function of $\rho$ vanishes to order 1 at the centre, then the Selmer group of $\rho$ has rank 1, generated by the class of an algebraic cycle. This confirms a case of the p-adic Beilinson--Bloch--Kato conjecture.

Abstract:We give a combinatorial proof of an identity that involves Eulerian numbers and was obtained algebraically by Brenti and Welker (2009). To do so, we study alcoved triangulations of dilated hypersimplices. As a byproduct, we describe the dual graph of the triangulation in the case of the standard simplex, conjecture its structure for general hypersimplices, and prove combinatorially that the Eulerian numbers coincide with the normalized volumes of the hypersimplices.

Abstract:This paper investigates circle patterns with obtuse exterior intersection angles on surfaces of finite topological type. We characterise the images of the curvature maps and establish several equivalent conditions regarding long time behaviors of Chow-Luo's combinatorial Ricci flows for these patterns. As consequences, several generalizations of circle pattern theorem are obtained. Moreover, our approach suggests a computational method to find the desired circle patterns.

Abstract:Euler-symmetric projective varieties, introduced by Baohua Fu and Jun-Muk Hwang in 2020, are nondegenerate projective varieties admitting many $\mathbb{C}^{\times}$-actions of Euler type. They are quasi-homogeneous and uniquely determined by their fundamental forms at a general point. In this paper, we study complete intersections in projective spaces which are Euler-symmetric. It is proven that such varieties are complete intersections of hyperquadrics and the base locus of the second fundamental form at a general point is again a complete intersection.
