Abstract:We answer a question of David Hilbert: given two circles it is not possible in general to construct their centers using only a straightedge. On the other hand, we give infinitely many families of pairs of circles for which such construction is possible.

Abstract:In order to state the theorem in the title formally and to review its rigorous proof, we extend and make more precise the Uspenskiy-Shen-Akopyan-Fedorov model of Euclidean constructions with arbitrary points; we also introduce formalizations for infinite configurations and for the projective plane. We exemplify the proof method by simpler and not so well known results that it is impossible to construct the unit length, or a given point, by compass and straightedge from nothing by means of classical arbitrary points. On the other hand we construct any given point by compass and straightedge from nothing by means of arbitrary points determined by horizontal segments. We quote a "proof" of Hilbert's theorem from the literature and explain why it is problematic. We rigorously prove Hilbert's theorem and present three variants of it, the last one for the projective plane.

Abstract:We construct families of circles in the plane such that their tangency graphs have arbitrarily large girth and chromatic number. This provides a strong negative answer to Ringel's circle problem (1959). The proof relies on a (multidimensional) version of Gallai's theorem with polynomial constraints, which we derive from the Hales-Jewett theorem and which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:Two subsets A , B of the plane are betweenness isomorphic if there is a bijection f : A → B such that, for every x , y , z ∈ A , the point f ( z ) lies on the line segment connecting f ( x ) and f ( y ) if and only if z lies on the line segment connecting x and y . In general, it is quite difficult to tell whether two given subsets of the plane are betweenness isomorphic. We concentrate on the case when each of the sets A , B is of the form C ∪ D where C is a circle and D is a finite set. We fully characterize the betweenness isomorphism classes in the family of all circles with three collinear points inside. In particular, we show that there are only countably many isomorphism classes, for which we provide an algebraic description.

Abstract:For an arbitrary convex quadrilateral $ABCD$ with area ${\cal A}$ and perimeter $p$, we define two points $I_1, I_2$ on its Newton line that serve as incenters. These points are the centers of two circles with radii $r_1, r_2$ that are tangent to opposite sides of $ABCD$. We then prove that ${\cal A}=pr/2$, where $r$ is the harmonic mean of $r_1$ and $r_2$. We also investigate the special cases with $I_1\equiv I_2$ and/or $r_1=r_2$.

Abstract:We study the relationship between the sizes of two sets $B, S\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ when $B$ contains either the whole boundary, or the four vertices, of a square with axes-parallel sides and center in every point of $S$, where size refers to one of cardinality, Hausdorff dimension, packing dimension, or upper or lower box dimension. Perhaps surprinsingly, the results vary depending on the notion of size under consideration. For example, we construct a compact set $B$ of Hausdorff dimension $1$ which contains the boundary of an axes-parallel square with center in every point $[0,1]^2$, but prove that such a $B$ must have packing and lower box dimension at least $\tfrac{7}{4}$, and show by example that this is sharp. For more general sets of centers, the answers for packing and box counting dimensions also differ. These problems are inspired by the analogous problems for circles that were investigated by Bourgain, Marstrand and Wolff, among others.

Abstract:A long-standing open conjecture of Branko Grünbaum from 1972 states that any simple arrangement of $n$ pairwise intersecting pseudocircles in the plane can have at most $2n-2$ digons. Agarwal et al. proved this conjecture for arrangements of pairwise intersecting pseudocircles in which there is a common point surrounded by all pseudocircles. Recently, Felsner, Roch and Scheucher showed that Grünbaum's conjecture is true for arrangements of pairwise intersecting pseudocircles in which there are three pseudocircles every pair of which create a digon. In this paper we prove this over 50-year-old conjecture of Grünbaum for any simple arrangement of pairwise intersecting circles in the plane.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a bisector field, which is a maximal collection of pairs of lines such that for each line in each pair, the midpoint of the points where the line crosses every pair is the same, regardless of choice of pair. We use this to study asymptotic properties of pencils of affine conics over fields and show that pairs of lines in the plane that occur as the asymptotes of hyperbolas from a pencil of affine conics belong to a bisector field. By including also pairs of parallel lines arising from degenerate parabolas in the pencil, we obtain a full characterization: Every bisector field arises from a pencil of affine conics, and vice versa, every nontrivial pencil of affine conics is asymptotically a bisector field. Our main results are valid over any field of characteristic other than $2$ and hence hold in the classical Euclidean setting as well as in Galois geometries.

Abstract:It is known that in $\mathbb{R}^n,n\geq 2$, a compact set which contains $n-1$ spheres with all radii in $[1/2,1]$ or with all possible centres in $[0,1]^n$ has full Hausdorff dimension. In fact the later set has positive Lebesgue measure. In this paper we consider a similar problem with sphere replacing by fractal cubes. The radii set and the centre set are also considered to be fractal sets. In addition we discuss the exceptional set in the setting of general largeness. In the end, an Furstenberg type example is discussed which can be somehow considered as the Furstenberg $\times 2$, $\times 3$ set conjecture (now theorem) in the setting of cubes/circles sets considered here.

Abstract:This article has been written for an educational magazine whose target audience consists of students and teachers of mathematics in universities, colleges and schools. It concerns a notion of duality between rectangles. A proof is given that only finitely many integral sided pairs of dual rectangles exist. Then a geometrical group law is shown to hold on the set of all rational self-dual rectangles. Finally, the arithmetic of a cubic surface is used to construct new pairs of rational dual rectangles from old, a technique inspired by the theory of elliptic curves.

Abstract:A popular curve shown in introductory maths textbooks, seems like a circle. But it is actually a different curve. This paper discusses some elementary approaches to identify the geometric object, including novel technological means by using GeoGebra. We demonstrate two ways to refute the false impression, two suggestions to find a correct conjecture, and four ways to confirm the result by proving it rigorously. All of the discussed approaches can be introduced in classrooms at various levels from middle school to high school.

Abstract:A Steiner chain of length k consists of k circles, tangent to two given non-intersecting circles (the parent circles) and tangent to each other in a cyclic pattern. The Steiner porism states that once a chain of k circles exists, there exists a 1-parameter family of such chains with the same parent circles that can be constructed starting with any initial circle, tangent to the parent circles. What do the circles in these 1-parameter family of Steiner chains of length k have in common? We prove that the first k-1 moments of their curvatures remain constant within a 1-parameter family. For k=3, this follows from the Descartes Circle Theorem. We extend our result to Steiner chains in the spherical and hyperbolic geometries and present a related more general theorem involving spherical designs.

Abstract:Ford circles are parameterized by the rational numbers but are also the result of an iterative geometric procedure. We review this and introduce an apparently new parameterization by solutions of a certain quadratic Diophantine equation. We then generalize to Eisenstein and Gaussian rationals where the resulting "Ford spheres" are also the result of iterative geometric procedures and are also parameterized by solutions of certain quadratic Diophantine equations. Abstract:Integer geometry on a plane deals with objects whose vertices are points in $\mathbb Z^2$. The congruence relation is provided by all affine transformations preserving the lattice $\mathbb Z^2$. In this paper we study circumscribed circles in integer geometry. We introduce the notions of integer and rational circumscribed circles of integer sets. We determine the conditions for a finite integer set to admit an integer circumscribed circle and describe the spectra of radii for integer and rational circumscribed circles.

Abstract:THE classical Euclidean constructions allow only the unmarked straightedge and a pair of compasses, now commonly called “a compass.” With these limited tools we can carry through the many beautiful constructions of elementary geometry.
