Abstract:Sylvester-polynomial-conjugate matrix equations unify many well-known versions and generalizations of the Sylvester matrix equation AX−XB=C which have a wide range of applications. In this paper, we present a general approach to Sylvester-polynomial-conjugate matrix equations via groupoids, vector spaces, and matrices over skew polynomial rings. The obtained results are applied to Sylvester-polynomial-conjugate matrix equations over complex numbers and quaternions. The main role in our approach is played by skew polynomial rings, which are well-known tools in algebra to provide examples of asymmetry between left-sided and right-sided versions of many ring objects.

Abstract:We design polynomial size, constant depth (namely, $\mathsf{AC}^0$) arithmetic formulae for the greatest common divisor (GCD) of two polynomials, as well as the related problems of the discriminant, resultant, Bézout coefficients, squarefree decomposition, and the inversion of structured matrices like Sylvester and Bézout matrices. Our GCD algorithm extends to any number of polynomials. Previously, the best known arithmetic formulae for these problems required super-polynomial size, regardless of depth.

Let p(x1,...,xm) be a polynomial with zero constant term in non-commutative variables over an algebraically closed field K . Suppose that 1≤r≤n−1 , where r is the order of p . Then p(Tn(K)) is a dense subset of Tn(K)(r−1) (with respect to the Zariski topology). This is a solution of a problem presented by Gargate and de Mello and a supplement to a result obtained by Panja and Prasad in 2023.

Abstract:The theorem proved in this paper gives a congruence for the traces of powers of an algebraic integer for the case in which the exponent of the power is a prime power. The theorem implies a congruence in Gauss’ form for the traces of the sums of powers of algebraic integers, generalizing many familiar versions of Fermat’s little theorem. Applied to the traces of integer matrices, this gives a proof of Arnold’s conjecture about the congruence of the traces of powers of such matrices for the case in which the exponent of the power is a prime power.

Abstract:A newdefinition for circulant tensors is given, which is a generalization of the one for circulant matrices. Furthermore, we define the generalized circulant tensors which can be diagonalized by the Fourier matrix F and/ or F*. We also consider solving the circulant tensor systems by a fast algorithm based on the fast Fourier transform (FFT). Such algorithm is similar to that for circulant linear systems and it can also be performed in O(n log n).

An estimate for a diagonally dominant circulant matrix is obtained. Based on this result and the idea of decomposing a matrix into a product of matrices associated with the decomposition of a characteristic polynomial, an estimate for the general circulant matrix is proposed.

Abstract:The Fagundes-Mello conjecture asserts that every multilinear polynomial on upper triangular matrix algebras is a vector space, which is an improtant variation of the old and famous Lvov-Kaplansky conjecture. The goal of the paper is to give a description of the images of linear polynomials with zero constant term on the upper triangular matrix algebra under a mild condition on the ground field. As a consequence we improve all results on the Fagundes-Mello conjecture. As another consequence we improve some results by Fagundes and Koshlukov on the images of multilinear graded polynomials on upper triangular matrix algebras.

Abstract:A framework for constructing circulant and block circulant preconditioners (C) for a symmetric linear system Ax=b arising from certain signal and image processing applications is presented in this paper. The proposed scheme does not make explicit use of matrix elements of A. It is ideal for applications in which A only exists in the form of a matrix vector multiplication routine, and in which the process of extracting matrix elements of A is costly. The proposed algorithm takes advantage of the fact that for many linear systems arising from signal or image processing applications, eigenvectors of A can be well represented by a small number of Fourier modes. Therefore, the construction of C can be carried out in the frequency domain by carefully choosing its eigenvalues so that the condition number of C{sup T} AC can be reduced significantly. We illustrate how to construct the spectrum of C in a way such that the smallest eigenvalues of C{sup T} AC overlaps with those of A extremely well while the largest eigenvalues of C{sup T} AC are smaller than those of A by several orders of magnitude. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the preconditioner on accelerating the solution of linear systems arising from image reconstruction application.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{F}$ be a field, and let $C$ be the $n\times n$ companion matrix of the monic polynomial $f(x)\in \mathbb{F}[x]$ such that $f(x) = \det(xI-C) = (x - \lambda_1)^{n_1} \cdots (x - \lambda_m)^{n_m}$ for $m$ distinct elements $\lambda_1, \dots, \lambda_m \in \mathbb{F}$. It is shown that there is a generalized Vandermonde matrix $V$ associated with $f(x)$ such that $VCV^{-1}$ is in Jordan form, and the columns of $V^{-1}$ are connected to the Hermite interpolating polynomials, whose higher derivatives will have specific values at $\lambda_1, \dots, \lambda_m$. If $m = n$ and $n_1 = \cdots = n_m = 1$, then the results reduce to the fact that the (classical) Vandermonde $V$ of $\lambda_1, \dots, \lambda_n$ satisfies $VCV^{-1}$ is a diagonal matrix and that the columns of $V^{-1}$ correspond to the Lagrange interpolating polynomials. This shows that the results for real polynomials and matrices also hold for polynomials and matrices over an arbitrary field $\mathbb{F}$. Moreover, interpretations and insights of the results are given in terms of linear transformation between $\mathbb{F}^n$ and the linear space of polynomials in $\mathbb{F}[x]$ with degree less than $n$.

Abstract:We study algebraic complexity classes and their complete polynomials under \emph{homogeneous linear} projections, not just under the usual affine linear projections that were originally introduced by Valiant in 1979. These reductions are weaker yet more natural from a geometric complexity theory (GCT) standpoint, because the corresponding orbit closure formulations do not require the padding of polynomials. We give the \emph{first} complete polynomials for VF, the class of sequences of polynomials that admit small algebraic formulas, under homogeneous linear projections: The sum of the entries of the non-commutative elementary symmetric polynomial in 3 by 3 matrices of homogeneous linear forms. Even simpler variants of the elementary symmetric polynomial are hard for the topological closure of a large subclass of VF: the sum of the entries of the non-commutative elementary symmetric polynomial in 2 by 2 matrices of homogeneous linear forms, and homogeneous variants of the continuant polynomial (Bringmann, Ikenmeyer, Zuiddam, JACM '18). This requires a careful study of circuits with arity-3 product gates.

Abstract:A vector-circulant matrix is a natural generalization of the classical circulant matrix and has applications in constructing additive codes. This article formulates the concept of a vector-circulant matrix over finite fields and gives an algebraic characterization for this kind of matrix. Finally, a construction of additive codes with vector-circulant based over $\mathbb{F}_4$ is given together with some examples of good half-rate additive codes.

Abstract:We define \emph{generalized standard triples} $\mathbf{X}$, $\mathbf{Y}$, and $L(z) = z\mathbf{C}_{1} - \mathbf{C}_{0}$, where $L(z)$ is a linearization of a regular matrix polynomial $\mathbf{P}(z) \in \mathbb{C}^{n \times n}[z]$, in order to use the representation $\mathbf{X}(z \mathbf{C}_{1}~-~\mathbf{C}_{0})^{-1}\mathbf{Y}~=~\mathbf{P}^{-1}(z)$ which holds except when $z$ is an eigenvalue of $\mathbf{P}$. This representation can be used in constructing so-called \emph{algebraic linearizations} for matrix polynomials of the form $\mathbf{H}(z) = z \mathbf{A}(z)\mathbf{B}(z) + \mathbf{C} \in \mathbb{C}^{n \times n}[z]$ from generalized standard triples of $\mathbf{A}(z)$ and $\mathbf{B}(z)$. This can be done even if $\mathbf{A}(z)$ and $\mathbf{B}(z)$ are expressed in differing polynomial bases. Our main theorem is that $\mathbf{X}$ can be expressed using the coefficients of the expression $1 = \sum_{k=0}^\ell e_k \phi_k(z)$ in terms of the relevant polynomial basis. For convenience, we tabulate generalized standard triples for orthogonal polynomial bases, the monomial basis, and Newton interpolational bases; for the Bernstein basis; for Lagrange interpolational bases; and for Hermite interpolational bases. We account for the possibility of common similarity transformations.

Computing Μ-Bases of Univariate Polynomial Matrices Using Polynomial Matrix Factorization.

Abstract:This paper extends the notion of μ -bases to arbitrary univariate polynomial matrices and present an efficient algorithm to compute a μ -basis for a univariate polynomial matrix based on polynomial matrix factorization. Particularly, when applied to polynomial vectors, the algorithm computes a μ -basis of a rational space curve in arbitrary dimension. The authors perform theoretical complexity analysis in this situation and show that the computational complexity of the algorithm is O( dn^4 + d^2n^3) , where n is the dimension of the polynomial vector and d is the maximum degree of the polynomials in the vector. In general, the algorithm is n times faster than Song and Goldman’s method, and is more efficient than Hoon Hong’s method when d is relatively large with respect to n . Especially, for computing μ -bases of planar rational curves, the algorithm is among the two fastest algorithms.

Abstract:Inverse Vandermonde matrix calculation is a long-standing problem to solve nonsingular linear system $Vc=b$ where the rows of a square matrix $V$ are constructed by progression of the power polynomials. It has many applications in scientific computing including interpolation, super-resolution, and construction of special matrices applied in cryptography. Despite its numerous applications, the matrix is highly ill-conditioned where specialized treatments are considered for approximation such as conversion to Cauchy matrix, spectral decomposition, and algorithmic tailoring of the numerical solutions. In this paper, we propose a generalized algorithm that takes arbitrary pairwise (non-repetitive) sample nodes for solving inverse Vandermonde matrix. This is done in two steps: first, a highly balanced recursive algorithm is introduced with $\mathcal{O}(N)$ complexity to solve the combinatorics summation of the elementary symmetric polynomials; and second, a closed-form solution is tailored for inverse Vandermonde where the matrix' elements utilize this recursive summation for the inverse calculations. The numerical stability and accuracy of the proposed inverse method is analyzed through the spectral decomposition of the Frobenius companion matrix that associates with the corresponding Vandermonde matrix. The results show significant improvement over the state-of-the-art solutions using specific nodes such as $N$th roots of unity defined on the complex plane. A basic application in one dimensional interpolation problem is considered to demonstrate the utility of the proposed method for super-resolved signals.

Abstract:A new approach for dealing with the structural properties of polynomial and rational matrices at infinity is presented. In this first part of the development, the attention is focused on polynomial matrices. Some fundamental notions and definitions such as the notion of homogeneous form for polynomial matrices are introduced. These enable us to define important concepts such as the cancellation at infinity, coprimeness at infinity, etc. for polynomial matrices in precisely the same way as for their finite counterparts. We demonstrate that our approach allows interesting generalizations of some important conventional concepts.

Abstract:The classical Grace–Walsh–Szegő Coincidence Theorem, see Rahman and Schmeisser (Analytic theory of polynomials, Oxford University Press, 2002, p. 108), relates the solutions of a symmetric multi-affine polynomial , with complex coefficients, to the zeros of the univariate polynomial . It says that every circular domain containing all points in a solution of P contains at least one zero of p . That result, together with its equivalent Grace's theorem, see Grace (Proc. Cambr. Philos. 11:352–357, 1902) or Rahman and Schmeisser (2002, p. 107), are among the most important fundamental results in the geometric theory of polynomials. The goal of this work is to search for structures in the algebraic variety given by the solutions of a multi-affine polynomial, symmetric or not. Since multi-affine polynomials are closely related to Möbius transformations, it is natural to look for patterns made up of circles. Given a solution of , we define the notion of weakly invariant circles given that solution . We give necessary and sufficient conditions for weakly invariant circles to exist, given the solution , and describe how to find them. In the second half of the paper we specialize our findings to symmetric multi-affine polynomials. Surprisingly, under very mild conditions, if has weakly invariant circles given the solution , then the points lie necessarily on a circle.

Also, for k = 1, the inverses of such (invertible) matrices are obtained (in a way different from the way presented in [1]), and the Moore-Penrose inverses of such (singular) matrices are derived.
